The rabbit manure could contain viable grass and clover seeds. That could account for the extra grass and clover in your garden beds. It better to make a rabbit manure tea.

The reason your lettuce & spinach didn’t grow is bc it’s way too hot. You’d make out better planting those in a shady area. Mine are in a Greenstalk on my porch under the roof. I turn it every day to where the sun hits it. It lasted a lot longer without bolting. I also top my beds with cardboard(make sure all the tape is off)then leaves in the Fall. The cardboard kills the weeds, but breaks down & really helps the bed. My hubby & I have been gardening & canning for 28 years. Will share all my “live & learned” lessons with you so you don’t have to!

Hey Rox, you may want to purchase a really decent silage tarp (because its uv protected so will last much longer than normal plastic tarps) or a heavy duty plastic instead of the weed mat. That will kill off weeds and weed seeds, and whilst its no good left down long term, you can leave it for a few months. It doesnt let water or air get to the soil which is why its not good long term but lots of folk use it for a few months to kill off the weeds and weed seeds before planting in them again. The weed mat is more typically if you are planning to leave it down and just cut holes into it to plant through it.
If you want a natural solution, you can use plain cardboard or newspaper - just try and stay away from colour print or cardboard with a plastic kinda skin to it. Then the newspaper/cardboard will break down in time with the growing seasons and add to your soil integrity :) its also cheaper 😂.
The weed mat will allow your soil to breathe and let water through, which is great for keeping your soil alive but in my experience and i believe why silage tarp/heavy duty black plastic is suggested, it doesnt do the best of jobs and the weeds grow back as soon as the weed mat is removed. ❤ hopefully the info can help for you to have an even better less maintenance needed garden next year x

Also take a look at next level gardening on youtube, he does and sells tomato hooks (imo the best out there) and teaches how to build a "frame" to use them. They'd be great for you so you don't need to worry about your tomatoes growing too tall for cages etc, and they're a much easier system to harvest from too. And as it grows taller, you just let the hook rope down to lower the bottom of the tomato down. If you watch his videos you'll see what I mean. Look at his more recent tomato videos from the last year or 2 because they moved to the property they're at now, but it's fab and actually you could use it for other food crops too, I guess for crop rotation. He's an amazing resource for learning so much though. ❤ x

Very jealous of your beautiful greenhouse, looks classy and expensive.very Homes and Garden..😊
One thing I'd suggest, is the practice of good garden hygiene in there, for instance, don't bring old soil inside, those pots and hanging baskets are likely to be harbouring pest eggs and disease from the previous season, they need emptying and a good washing out with hot soapy water before replanting.
I know others don't like the grass pathways but if you don't mind the hard work of maintenance they can look lovely. In my garden we laid down a thick layer of cardboard and some thick old carpet, upside down, and covered it with broken pieces of grey slate. it has lasted over seven years with very little maintaining. Better than gravel which weeds like to seed into. Just yet another suggestion from a fellow gardener.. 😊👍🇬🇧 I really love the trellis!

Save your egg shells and crush them to add calcium and keep out snails, food grade diatametious earth is good applied at the beginning of the garden season and marigolds help keep bugs out as well. Bugs don't like the smell of marigolds. I use brown paper bags and straw for my weed barrier, paper bags breaks down during the growing season, straw takes a bit longer but is good to cover the beds for winter and will continue to break down adding to your soil. Looking good guys.

I just found out you can freeze cherry tomatoes whole! What a game changer for me. We have a few bushes that grew up from dropped fruit and they are so prolific i get cherry tomatoes all year round. Hard to eat so many..but yet not enough to make a decent amount of sauce. Freezing them gave me that option.. 12 jars of spaghetti sauce this week 😃😃

I see you have the tower in your green house....my lettuce and spinach and herbs do really really good in the stackable towers...just buy some really good potting soil and give it some food once a month and yours will do good ....And sense you had so many bugs on your zucchini make sure you plant zucchini in a different bed in Spring because the bugs will stay in dirt you had them in , so you have to trick them and plant somewhere else ...Just plant something in the old bed that the squash bugs don't like...I was happy I saw you could use the plant tags I got them at the dollar store they sure come in handy ..I hope the pot didn't break that I sent ..... I use the giant grow bags for potatoes and they did really well this summer. the garden is looking great and hope you can finish your supply room before the rain....

Roxanne, how about offering Mel a little space to grow some winter herbs. Fresh herbs are always better than spice rack, and if she knows what you have going on it makes it easier to house sit when you are away.
There are a lot of videos about "balcony gardening" and greenhouse gardening! Basically getting the most production from a small plot! Could serve you well. If you keep it heated, you could even do hydroponics, that is very productive! ❤❤

Greenhouse looks fabulous but throw out the soil from your pots and hanging baskets and wash the pots out so ther hygienic for the next time your planting with fresh soil or compost … that way ther isn’t any contamination from previous growth… I never use the same soil or compost…I wldnt have grass growing in your garden I wld have stones not grass for convenience but if you like grass your right you do have to keep on top of the grass maintenance… I still have tomato’s growing in my greenhouse but the darned snails got to my cabbages…I had egg shells all round and I had copper all round to pots but they still came…I think you did really well with your garden last season… you might as well grow what you can in the greenhouse…

Love your greenhouse…you may still need grow lights in your greenhouse for winter. I have a small greenhouse and I use grow lights in winter and also in spring when starting my transplants. I also use the clear covers until they germinate. I was always taught to mix your seed starting soil with water in a container ( not dripping wet ) then add that to your seed trays before adding your seeds. I know you love grass but grasshoppers and other pests like to hid in the grass during the day and come out at night to munch on your plants….I learned the hard way when I had raised beds.

I remember you had a compost pit. Ours is made from pallets. He do cold compost(meaning we pile all our clippings & produce scraps in then let it compost slowly) If you alternate your leaves, produce scraps etc it’ll breakdown over winter. Just pile it high 75% brown & 25^ “green” wet it down by Spring it’ll be garden gold. You have chickens & rabbits, free nitrogen! If you add that into your compost, it’ll breakdown faster!

  • @jenthrasher5056

Put Thompsons water seal on everything inside the greenhouse, and condensation will mold and rot the wood. Reseal in spring and fall every year. And leave tge ground cover on your garden until you plant next spring.
I personally cover my whole garden in ground cover, 2 years ago. I cut holes for where I want the plants, a d don't remove the ground cover until it needs replaced. Now I haven't seen a horn worm in 2 years, and my squash plants stay safer as well.
Roxie transplant 1 melon plant to the greenhouse.
Made sure you put your grow bags on plastic, because constant wetness will rot the wood.
Don't take off the raised beds covers, put rabbit poo right in the holes when you plant.
Rabbit poo don't have to sit like most stuff, you can add it fresh it won't burn your roots like chicken cow, or harsh chemicals

    Rox, Hey! Living in Maine comes with some real unconventional methods to growing a productive garden. Our first garden was in the ground, fenced and did a-ok. The grass was the forever element we could not control along with moose and deer. We love gardening and freezing veggies for the winter so we found another method that beats traditional in ground or raised bed. We use recycled kitty litter buckets and have been for the last five years. We have 36 buckets we can plant anything in and it works great...best part>>>>>NO GRASS OR WEEDS!! We recommend this method to everyone for many points: Frees up your time;
Movable plantings into sunny areas; Faster planting time; Easily managable for all ages; Gardens should reflect your needs.

You need some cow & some very good compost black dirt on & in your beds. That is just one of the reasons your carrots and squash and zucchini and pumpkins and stuff don’t grow. Put the mix of cow manure & black dirt compost put 40 cow to 50 black dirt then fill your beds too the top then put the cover on them but you need to add very good compost to your beds every year. You can add rabbit poop too your beds put you need to add water too it. Say you got a 1/2 a Bucket you would need too fill it almost too the top let it set for a week but Stir it every day to Break it down into a liquid form it works a lot better. Just remember if you don’t have deep bedding your Carrey & other root plant want grow. & you the deep bedding for root to grow down into you never had that for your try this. Plant your career with your white & red onions they work well together oh cover a spot for your pumpkins to kill the weeds out for over the winter.

Rox, if you bag the leaves into clear bags, they will break down over the winter, and the collected heat will help that process to kill the weed seeds. Just put the bags into the beds, because clear plastic is not UV Protected. When you're ready to plant, just grab the top of the bags, and the bottom will fall out. Makes some of the best black gold I've ever planted in. The Wisconsin Vegetable Gardeners put out a great video of how they planted carrots into 5 gallon pails without a bottom, and they were huge.

The seed hole maker with measuring marks is a Dibble. You can take suckers off your tomato plants, you can plant them to make new plants. No need to wait for seeds to grow. If you like cucumbers, you could have dug up the lone cucumber plant and put in pot in greenhouse to grow.

Rox if you mow through your garden every week the plant doesn't get a chance to grow to maturity and produce seed that get in your garden beds. God Bless from your Canadian Friend.

As your leaves fall pull back your weed narrier and add them to your bed too. They will compost over winter.

I would not give the chickens any of the tomato plant itself. Just the fruit. The leaves can be toxic to chickens. I plant 1 tomato, 1 pepper and lots of lettuce, radishes and green onions in my greenhouse in OKC, OK durning winter. I think we are in the same planting zone 7. Just be sure to plant determinate tomato or it will take over the greenhouse. My first year growing in winter I planted 2 and they took it over. When you opened the door, all you could see was vines. I really enjoy your videos and veiws. Thank you for sharing...Your garden looks great!!

If you put a thermometer in your copost pile, I note many homesteaders watch for 160 degrees. Does 160 degrees mean the weed seeds will be burned up? Im a city girl and just don't know all the ins and outs of composting. I know leaves are acid.

I used black 6 mil plastic under my beds. It prevented weed growth and grass creep. Also double the soil depth of your beds. This creates a greater biome bed for plant nutrition. Cover the beds every fall with 6 mil black plastic to prevent weed intrusion. Try a test bed and see if I am right. By the way, even miracle grow bags of soil have weeds! I love your garden!

This year for my garden, I saved my 30 pounds dog food bags. Turned inside out they make great grow bags. With as many dogs as you have. You should have a lot of bags you could recycle into grow bags. Fill them and set them around your fence. Even if you just use them for flowers, they are free. And can be trimmed to any height you prefer.

Hi Ant, you can use ply wood as those truss plates, it’s surprising how strong ply makes them, cheaper too. Rox, I am going to be watching with great expectation for successful greenhouse produce. I think that thing is a podger, that just seemed to pop in my memory when I saw it. Try a challenge for out of season strawberries in there, just for fun. You will get great pleasure from these last few builds. Stay safe, see you on your next. Oh, also try to get some of those styrofoam boxes to use for seed starting. I used them and made newspaper tubes for the seed starters inside. I simply transplanted the tubes into the garden without disturbing the roots. They worked well for me, but like you, there was great competition for those seedlings coming to edible veggies. Rats, bugs and birds did the damage which was dissapointing.
