  • The fortieth episode of Boss Analysis.
Retaining your place at the top of the pile isn't easy, everyone and their boss-slaying dog wants to push you off and dethrone you. Many final bosses understand this pain all too well.
Not only have they got countless others craving the position, but they've also got the many, many players of the game who want to cut them down to size to triumph over the game. And the sad thing is, not all of them can reclaim their former glory.
Perhaps to prove how powerful the main heroes have become, some final bosses will show up later in a sequel in a diminished role. Maybe a new villain has come along that makes the old final boss look pale in comparison - in the age of progress, not everyone is able to keep up, and whatever the reason is, that's the main topic of today's Boss Analysis, as I go over my favourite "demoted final bosses".

I've always thought that Link's Shadow basically requiring exploiting the AI was on purpose. Like...you need the triforce of courage, and it's certainly courageous to fight yourself...but it's like a rock-paper-scissors situation. If you fight completely honorably, it demonstrates your courage...but if you take advantage of your shadow's eagerness to assault you and play very defensively, you are demonstrating wisdom...also, if you use your spells (which he can't do) to buff yourself up, you are demonstrating your power. Maybe I'm reading too deeply into a 32-year-old game...or maybe it was purposefully clever. Also...technically "Dark Link" and "Link's Shadow" aren't the same canonically.

An interesting buff for the Death Egg Robot that wasn’t mentioned, regardless of how small it is: There’s a hard time limit now. You can eventually run out of land to stand on, but the time is incredibly generous if you’ve got a good grip on the game. You can technically survive that land lacking with Tails, but you need some tricky flying to do so.

28:59 I think that might be when you deal that last hit on Robotnik in this fight; When he's done for, the pistons will descend at half the speed, which in an oversight, allows players to hit him once more, which will end up making Ivo need to take 256 more hits until he can be defeated again.

He's massive in Pikmin 1, comes in two different sizes in Pikmin 2, when you find him as a boss and when he's found in a group, and then he's gigantic in Hey Pikmin! Also, not as related, their corpses grow significantly smaller when they die at any size in Pikmin 2.

    The worst final boss demotion?
Bowser during the end-credits of Bowser's Inside Story. (Spoilers)
Right after you beat the final boss, there's a little cutscene where Bowser coughs up everyone he inhaled during the events of the game, including Mario and Luigi. The Brothers were secretly helping Bowser during the entire game, with reviving him, giving him extra strength, and other things. Bowser attacks them out of frustration now learning that fact. The credits roll with a slideshow of this battle.
It takes One Koopa Shell, Hammer, and Jump attack to defeat him In that scene.
You know, the BASIC ATTACKS AND AN EARLY GAME ATTACK which, compared to his fight in Toad Town, DO BASICALLY ZERO DAMAGE. You could argue he was wounded from the Dark Bowser fight beforehand, but so should the Bros! They fought The Dark Star too! Luigi should have gotten knocked out when Bowser punched him!
    So after everything...
+ Got the First Strike on Luigi
    - It didn't K'O him for some reason
    - Deals less damage ^
    - Takes more Damage, or Has Less health
    - Can't / Doesn't Dodge or Counter Attack
    15/10
At least Bowser gets a nice cake at the end.

There's Masked Dedede from Super Star Ultra to Triple Deluxe,
Marx from Super Star to SSBU,
Dark Matter Swordsman from Dreamland 2 to Planet Robobot,
and Queen Sectonia from Triple Deluxe to Planet Robobot (which is really the only easier one)
Nightmare would've been complicated with Adventure to Super Kirby Clash,

Honestly, when I replayed Pokémon Red, I found the thing that dated it the most (not counting glitches) was the movepools. They are TERRIBLE. Most Pokémon hardly learn anything by natural level up. Most TMs are weak (Water Gun, Psywave) or outright useless (Teleport, Whirlwind AND Roar in a game where they were useless in Trainer battles, and most wild battles too). And the types were severely unbalanced: about half of the moves are normal type, types like Ghost and Bug had NO strong moves to work with, and Dragon only has ONE move, and it has set damage of 40 so it’s isn’t true Stab or even that strong.
Gen 2 did a lot to fix the move pool so that all types had at least some decent attacking moves.

While Gen II is a big improvement, it deeserves some slack, due to being the original series. It was never going to perfect, especially when the formula can be tweaked over time. Game Freak didn't originally see the series going past Gen II.

    • @wingedmirage4226
      @wingedmirage4226 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Anto RetroGamer Yeah, you can only hate the first game in a series so much because, well, the series wouldn’t exist without it. I like Gen 1, but I can’t really rank it with the others because all future generations were just better, so it’s in a special place because it’s the first. Also the glitches are the best thing ever. That’s the main reason I ever go back to Gen 1.
Now all the Gen 1 PANDERING is annoying. Like, it deserves some attention, but there are other gens people.

Git, in one video where you answered your subscribers questions (it was the 2nd one I believe) you said that one of your dreams is to make your own game. My questions are:
    1. What kind of genre would it be? Would it be a plattformer or a RPG or something not from the above?
    2. Which Engine would you use?
    3. How long would you make the game?
    4. Would you do it alone or would you make the game with friends or someone like that?
I would be happy to see your answers to my questions

    Regarding the Spider Mastermind:
its placements in Doom 2 are *FAR, FAR* worse than in Doom 1.
The first mastermind on UV is under a crusher, which just takes 1 button press to kill it.
The second one appears with 5 Arachnotrons, which it fights and loses 99% of the time.
The one in map 20 fights a Cyber-Demon and loses nearly every time.
The last 2 Spider Demons also appear in a swarm of Arachnotrons, along with *TWO INVULNERABILITY POWER-UPS IN PLAIN SIGHT*
I rest my case, it got nerfed a whole lot by bad placement alone.

Just the fact there's an exploit where you throw purple pikmin on his head while he's underground, comes up, shimmies a bit, then loses 85% of his health before even being able to attack is laughable. The secret to Water Temple Dark Link is to alternate slash directions. Vertical to horizontal and keep swapping each time you attack. That "confuses" him, and Dark Link will usually do the wrong slash on the 3rd hit before he gets aggressive, and then the 4th hit once he starts attacking on his own. The problem is you need good timing, as too many frames between your attacks will reset his attack counter, and he'll keep fighting correctly to block your attacks. Lock on to take advantage of vertical strikes being neutral, and tap as slightly as possible for horizontal slashes. This way you're less likely to stab and get interrupted, and you won't turn away from your target.

Deathless emperor bulblax strategy in pikmin 1: throw a bomb rock out there and call it back just as it's about to get eaten. Then, once the bulblax is stunned, throw your red pikmin onto him but not too many otherwise you may miss the timing for your whistle. Call them back immmediately when the bulblax gets up, flee to the grassy area outside of the arena, then simply repeat. With patience you should be done before the day ends, assuming you started the day with all the puzzles solved and went straight to him.
Deathless emperor bulblax strategy in pikmin 2: spam purples. Even 20 will be enough. Maybe even throw some reds in there, or hell just throw 'em all on his ass. Once he's stunned he's fucked, so have fun.

What I did was using the Hookshot, which made him roll near to me, and then I immediately attacked him with the sword while he's vulnerable

There's a reason the original Spider Mastermind is called "Miss Tier F" by doomtuber decino. You can brute force her with pointblank BFG blasts (with a bit of RNG, a single blast can drop her).
In almost every 3rd party map out there, the Mastermind usually gets horribly slaughtered by infighting. Even a few angry Pinkies can kill her. Mastermind's are one of the few enemies that can infight with others of it's kind too.

A much greater demotion of Dark Link would be his appearance in Spirit Tracks: He's now hidden away at the end of a 50-floor gauntlet of enemies and bosses, and despite that (and the use of sometimes janky motion controls), he's been diminished to the point where the repeat bosses you fought getting to him were harder. Possibly something to do with him being the evil shadow of 'Toon Link' this time?
Any recurring boss will inevitably have this happen to them at some point; Count Dracula, Death, Ridley, Bowser, Shredder/Krang, M. Bison, Gilgamesh, Dr. Wily... If they kept on getting stronger every time you'd never win. Sigma probably gets it the worst, but it's justified by the plot concept that he becomes less sane every time the Maverick virus revives him from the dead.
