  • The sequel episode to Boss Analysis 50! (WARNING: Contains flashing scenes)
From bosses I love, bosses I hate, tiny bosses, huge bosses, weird bosses, boss shortcuts and many, many more, we've seen that gaming's biggest bad guys come in countless different shapes, sizes and flavours.
Final bosses naturally want to be impressive and imposing, which pushes them towards towering over the main characters in the game. All too often, this pushes them towards a design and battle style that I refer to as the typical final boss.
I'm pretty sure you've fought one yourself at some point: big body in the background, uses two hands to attack. Sometimes the hands can be destroyed, other times you'll need to jump on them to reach the boss' weakpoint... they're dime a dozen in the world of gaming.
One of the ideas I had when I first thought of Boss Analysis was a video where I showed as many of these as I could think of. To mark the occasion in episode 50, I attempt to count as many of these from as many games as I could think of, and now in this episode, we continue the counter...

Mega Satan is the first final boss of *Rebirth* iteration of Isaac. There was an original Adobe Flash version of the game which ended on Sheol and Chest floors (the latter didn't have a golden door).
Isaac always had a lot of bosses that you could consider final.

I heard that the Wii/Wii U port fixed a large amount of the eye poison in that game. If you play Pulseman, try to track down that version to play instead of the SG version. However, since both online stores are now perminatly offline, you'll have to hack your Wii/Wii U to play them or somehow track down a ROM of the VC version rather than the SG version.

RPGs love this kind of boss too- I remember Wild Arms 2 made it a mechanic where a boss' attacks changed depending on which limbs had been lost. Persona 5's original final boss gets 4 hands, each one with different weapons, resistances and abilities, and the most dangerous part of the fight is when he summons all 4 together with the head.

Gud ol' Moon Lord, from Terraria. The canonically upper half of the sibling of Cthulhu, who, due to its lack of lower body, attacks using his hands lasers and head lasers.
Golem also technically counts, as it was the final boss of terraria before Moon Lord was added. Who first attacks you with its rocket hands, and then the head pops out and you gotta destroy the body quickly before the head destroys you.
Honorable mention to Skeletron and its Prime Version, since they are literally a head and two arms (or 4 in the prime version). But alas, they are not a final boss.

King Olly from Paper Mario Origami King should count as another one for Mario RPG final bosses.
In the final phase, he becomes giant and looms over the arena with his body and hands and remains stationary. He first uses his hands to scramble the magic circle. As you're unscrambling the circle, he will occasionally try to attack with his hands. Sometimes it's a straight slap, but he also turns his hands into hammers or swords. You have to dodge at the right time to avoid instant death.
Once the circle is unscrambled, you can finally use your 1000-Fold Arms and Olivia as a hammer to defeat Olly.
Sounds like another one on the counter

The Giant Robosa from Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter is one of those kinds of bosses (though not its final boss). It's more similar to Wham Bam Rock from Kirby, though, since you can only attack its hands. Its main twist is that it inhales you several times throughout the battle and forces you to fight its mechanical innards (both of its eyes and its heart; once you destroy its heart, you've beaten it). I think it could've been executed better, though. Each time you beat one of its eyes, it spits you back out and forces you to fight its main body again with no change to how it fights (not even its attack pattern) except its movements getting a little faster.

Although, given that the Shadow Queen we see is just her spirit, and she closely resembles the Sirens, it’s very possible that they served her in life and she was their actual birth mother. Then again, she’s a demon, and there doesn’t appear to be anything resembling a male Shadow Queen, so it’s just as possible she just created them out of nothing. Very ambiguous situation. God, I love the Paper Mario trilogy.

Why is it so common? I guess because having only three elements to focus on makes them simple to develop, animate, and fight. But you'd think they'd get wary of it being overdone...

I wonder if Moon Lord from Terraria would count as a "Typical Final boss."
He does have a head and hands, but the hands don't really make physical attacks (grabbing, slamming, and in fact, he's the only boss that doesn't deal contact damage (until you take out the eyes and they reveal mouths with teeth, but he doesn't actually try to hit you with that)) like you'd expect. Instead, they open to reveal eyes that fire projectiles or summon more eyes. The head itself also has an eye on the forehead that fires an infamous laser that can be quite difficult to avoid and deals massive damage (especially in Expert mode or higher).
I know Skeletron would definitely count in version 1.0, where he's the strongest of the three bosses, and most players would fight him last in that version (He's got the head and hands thing down to a tee, and the hands swipe at you and deal damage on contact. He also has an attack where he raises his hands above his head, which aggressively spins towards you)

Mega Satan also doubles as another "standard final boss" I think is used frequently: The "constantly sics his minions on you". And a third one, that being the "obligatory boss rematch" only in Binding of Isaac's case, you don't need to have fought most of the thirteen bosses and minibosses that are said minions. Not even the two which yield the key pieces that grant you access to Mega Stan "need" to be fought, there's an item that opens any door, and it works on Mega Stan's big, bountiful boss door.
As for Git's comment about "final boss until updates added way more", uh... going by "unlocks an ending"... the game has twelve. *TWELVE* final bosses. In fact, the way it works, you can end up fighting as many as six of them in a single chain.

Since you mentioned the final boss of M&L Superstar Saga, I guess I should mention the one from M&L Dream Team, which is kind of like a typical boss fight : Dreamy Bowser.
This boss has two hands : the left one blocks his weak point and the right one can grab one of the bros and throw it at mach 5. You can actually defeat the boss without destroying both of his hands, but it's best if you take out the left one.
He also summons Dreamy Minions and goes to the background to restore his health, so you better get rid of them fast. You can use your Temper Balls to enrage him and let him destroy his own minions as you run from him.

Then came _Rebirth,_ and with it, some more final bosses, those being The Lamb and Mega Satan (as well as the Greed Mode-exclusive Ultra Greed in _Afterbirth_ ), then _Afterbirth+_ added in Delirium (and the Greedier Mode-exclusive Ultra Greedier), and finally _Repentance_ added in Mother and The Beast.

I kind of find this funny since I just finished playing a game recently that featured this exact trope.
The final boss in "Relayer", a mecha-based SRPG, is separated into being a main body, a left arm, and a right arm. The right arm specializes in buffs, the left arm specializes in debuffs/status ailments, and the main body specializes in straight up damage. Including a massive laser that goes straight down the map and can hit multiple of your units. You only need to take down the main body to end the battle, the arms can be completely ignored. But since the main body obviously has a lot of health to burn through, it is risky to ignore the arms since their buffs/debuffs will really hurt in the long run.
Even worse, there is a steady flow of enemy reinforcements on top of the ones already there. They spawn in at the far right and left edges of the stage, while the boss is at the top-center. Starts with two, one on each end, but will increase by one for each arm destroyed, making a total of four at two in each end. The grunts aren't as strong as the arms but they can still be annoying if they end up swarming you.
So here's the dilemma, the entire fight is about trade-offs. Are you going to focus on the body and hope you can destroy it fast enough or will you aim for the arms to prevent getting locked down by buffs/debuffs? Will you condense in the center to avoid the reinforcements coming in or spread out to avoid the massive laser the boss's body can use?
The final boss here was quite a significant step up in difficulty compared to anything you've faced prior to say the least. And that's not even touching on how there's an even harder, powered-up variant in the post game. And then the post-post game introduced via DLC where you face two of them at the same time.

Hi-Fi Rush has QA-1MIL, a fun first boss thats elevated by the gameplay mechanics being heavily based on rhythm games. Every attack is timed to the beat, with the QTE sections also emphasizing that with the boss's melody blaring out. The name is also a reference to its own boss theme, 1 million by Nine Inch Nails. Iconic first boss for an overall memorable game and it does well at testing the player's knowledge of the mechanics learned at that point. CrossCode also has 2 big head + hands bosses I can think of, the X01 Driller H.F.S. in the temple mine, and the final boss. Spoilers for the final boss because CrossCode is a really good action rpg that everyone should look into. It's one of my favorite games of all time.
The Designer/Creator is one of my favorite bosses in any RPG series. It tests your knowledge of the elements when dealing with the shield phases, along with having to balance said elemental usage so that you avoid elemental overload. The Creator also builds small puzzles during battle that you have to solve and most moves also have elemental variations that changes its properties. The monologue before the duel is by far the most iconic part of the boss though.
    "We seek the ultimate experience.
And everything changed... when we met you.
Once an empty vessel, a caged bird.
Now back again, whole and free!
Filled with boundless resourcefulness... born out of hope!
    You are the one!
    The player we desired!
    And thus...
    The ultimate experience... shall begin!!"
The only issue is that he could be cheesed with armor that grants regeneration, so overall he was pretty easy. Still a really cool boss.

I remembered Digimon World 2 had a final boss: Overlord GAIA. At first you fight it as a whole boss, then he separates his hands. Size-wise, he is indeed bigger than most Digimon, but not extremely big that it cannot fit the map.

I'd say I am only average at best at fighting games, and I don't think I have ever lost to Apocalypse in X-Men vs Street Fighter. He comes back in Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, but he's not the final boss in that game (it's Cyber-Akuma, who actually can be hard) and Apocalypse is even easier in that game! It's almost like a work of art seeing how badly Apocalypse gets wrecked when you use Omega Destroyer on him!

Maybe final boss from Mischief Makers (or Go-Go, Troublemakers). Marina, Cybot G, faces three bosses fused in one. She cannot reach the main body or head. Nor she needs to -when boss tries to punch her with perfect timing she catches enemy fist and sends it back, so boss beats shit out of himself!

Mentioned it in a comment on the previous installment but DJ Octavio in Splatoon and Splatoon 2 likely counts as a TFB, there’s a body and some of his main attacks are with floating hands (which is actually the main attack you need to counter to progress in the battle)

  • @DaKing08

(Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope spoilers head!)
Cursa seems to follow this trope as well.
First, you fight the arms. (or hands) You have all heroes at once, but need to switch between groups of 3. By either dealing direct damage or getting them to slam onto spikes, you should be able to dispatch them. Watch out for the enemies though, they’re quite rough.
Next, you fight Cursa itself. (or the head)
And yet again, there’s a third phase. Unlike the previous two, it’s actually quite interesting.
Here, you channel damage into Rosalina’s wands in order to land hits.

Since JRPGs were mentioned, and some bosses with actual bodies, not just heads... There is one that comes to mind, from Trails in the Sky (specifically the first game, and as such there are spoilers for it, **so only click "read more" if you either don't care, or have already finished said first game, as I will be providing some plot context.** On a related note, if you can handle long-form storytelling that's not afraid to take it slow to ease people in, absolutely play the games, they're great.)
    .
    .
    .
    .
The boss in question is Reverie, the final boss of the game. Sealed in an ancient network of tunnels underneath Grancel Castle, it emerges after the Gospel (basically a mysterious device that at the time was only known to shut down technology around it) that game antagonist Alan Richard has with him activates, disabling a seal, which happens immediately after a fight with him, as he's past the final point of no return. It's a giant robot (the first of many the series would ultimately have, as anyone who's familiar with the third arc, Cold Steel, can absolutely confirm), that in its first phase is accompanied by two floating devices - one resists physical attacks, the other resists arts. It is actually a TFB as both devices are targets, as is Reverie itself, though this is not revealed as a TFB until phase two - when it transforms into a more aggressive, almost draconic form (which IIRC it refers to as Genocide Mode when engaging said form), *and the two devices attach themselves to the boss, revealing themselves to have been hands all along.* What Reverie is doing there is only revealed to attentive players in SC, and it ends up getting reverse engineered and the products of said reverse engineering serve as bosses late in SC, though those don't apply as they're based on Genocide Mode, as such bearing the name Reverie Dragion, no free-floating hands there.)

I can't help but think of NULL (a.k.a Filename2) from Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered when seeing these TFBs. He's like the polar opposite design wise. He doesn't have a head or hands, just the rest of the body! (Yes, he has eyes and hair, I don't thibk that counts as a head)

  • @maglev957
    @maglev957 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

(It's advised to not hear me out on this, because one factor is not met by these bosses: Being in the background)
A rather unorthodox example of a TFB just ocurred to me: Teacher Bun Bun from The Battle Cats.
New players may not see him as much of a final boss at all, however he was the absolute final boss of the game clear back at its initial launch and his defeat still yields an ending cutscene, so I still think he fulfills the final boss criteria. In terms of the other requirements, he's one of the largest enemies in the game and attacks by punching. Even a tower defense game has a TFB (though Zomboss in PVZ1 may also count, making that less impressive), though that doesnt stop this fight from being incredibly memorable.
Theres also Mecha-Bun (the final boss of Stories of Legend, who is a mech built in Teacher Bun Bun's likeness) and Zero Luza (final boss of Uncanny Legends, a massive gorilla who slams the ground to attack), meaning The Battle Cats has a whopping THREE TFBs!
