Boss Analysis # 50

  • It's the fiftieth episode of Boss Analysis!
From bosses I love, bosses I hate, tiny bosses, huge bosses, weird bosses, boss shortcuts and many, many more, we've seen that gaming's biggest bad guys come in countless different shapes, sizes and flavours.
In this special milestone episode, I mark the occasion with one of the prototype ideas for this series...
Final bosses naturally want to be impressive and imposing, which pushes them towards towering over the main characters in the game. All too often, this pushes them towards a design and battle style that I refer to as the typical final boss.
I'm pretty sure you've fought one yourself at some point: big body in the background, uses two hands to attack. Sometimes the hands can be destroyed, other times you'll need to jump on them to reach the boss' weakpoint... they're dime a dozen in the world of gaming.
One of the ideas I had when I first thought of Boss Analysis was a video where I showed as many of these as I could think of. As this is a special episode, why not callback what might have been and make that the theme this time?
Keep in mind, like usual, there are probably a lot of these I'm forgetting about. The typical final bosses featured were the ones that came to my mind without too much thinking. Perhaps I'll include others in a future sequel...
Update: A sequel video now exists: • Boss Analysis # 66

Actually, these bosses originated from the limited coding for bosses, as they could sprite and code a one full sized boss, or they could code 3 smaller parts of the boss (hands and head) and the rest in the background layer. And suddenly because of its simplicity and intimidation, it became a trend.

-Big boi in the background? Check
-Attacks with his hands? Somewhat check? It's the same case as Castlevania III Dracula: He can't directly hurt you with his hands, but his attacks come from there (or better said, the eyes in his hands)
    -Final boss? Check
And I just forgot this game exists: Pokepark 2, Darkai:
-Big boi in the background? Well... it's a 3d Game, but he is at the background edge of the arena, and floating away from it instead of on the platform, so check?
    -Attacks with his hands? Check
-Final Boss? Well, he is the main final boss, but there are 2 more extra boss battles as postgame (Reshiram and Zekrom), but check anyways.

There's Anankos, the true final boss of Fire Emblem Fates, and also Kamoshidaman from Persona Q, but he is the first boss, so he's an honorable mention. There's also Mega Satan in the Binding of Isaac, as he's one of the many bosses you could consider "final" (defeating him may lead you to a victory screen or push you further into the next "final boss").

    • @mintymechanic8420
      @mintymechanic8420 2 ปีที่แล้ว

1: Kamoshidaman is from Persona Q2, and I'm pretty sure he was just one enemy.
2: As long as defeat of the boss leads to an ending of the game, then it's a final boss. Just because it's a coin flip to decide if you can enter The Void from Mega Satan doesn't stop it from being a final boss. This means Isaac (cathedral) and Satan (sheol) are both final bosses of TBOI because you can enter them without Polaroid/Negative and receive an ending cutscene.

    • @martindouge1947
      @martindouge1947 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@mintymechanic8420 Kamoshidaman's second form (and the real boss fight) is comprised of his main body flanked by two weapons, one in each of his hands. Each weapon has a separate life bar. In a weird way, I think it fits the trope of 1 body - 2 hands. The hands will dish out most of the damage so it's necessary to take them down before you can safely fight the main body.
Also on Mega Satan, I said this because it varies from person to person. Some people will tell you The Beast is the true final boss because it leads to the most recent and "canon" ending. I agree with your definition but not everyone will see it that way, which is why I turned my sentence like that.

Terraria loves this kind of boss. There's Skeletron, a floating head with two hands, Skeletron prime, a floating head with *four* hands, each with their own attacks, and the final boss, the Moon Lord, also qualifies. You fight two eyes in its hands, as well as one in its head. Once all three are downed, you can attack its heart for the kill.
And at some point in the game's history, they've all been the "final" boss. Skeletron before 1.1, Skeletron Prime in 1.1, and Moon Lord in 1.3 and later.

Would Zomboss from the first Plants vs. Zombies game count? He uses his zombot's giant hands to deploy zombies to eat your defenses & if you're unlucky, your brains. He also throws vans at you & makes rolling balls of fire & ice to flatten your plants which i don't know if you know, but you don't want.

I wouldn't count him, personally. An important part of the concept is that the boss's body is in the background while Zomboss spends the entire fight parked firmly on the right side of the screen. He's no more "in the background" than your plants are.

There are still definitely more Mega Man examples, though:
Elpizo's 2nd form from Zero 2 counts for the same reasons Castlevania 3's Dracula would--boss is entirely within the background, head is the weak point, and the attacks come from his hands.
Serpent's final form from ZX *definitely* would count by pretty much any stretch of the "head with hands" concept.

The final boss of Dragon Quest 6 definitely counts. It's also my main pick for most annoying final boss in the series.
The first phase is an old man with two orbs that cannot be targeted surrounding him that he uses for breath attacks.
Once you beat him, he absorbs the orbs and reveals his true form, which can move twice per turn. Special mention to his own version of defend champion that massively increases his defence in one turn when adopting a defensive stance, but if he attacks right after, despite dropping the stance, his guard is still up! Not to mention that this form also has Buff, so you need someone ready to debuff him just in case. Then you find out that it may be its true form, but it isn't the last.
His final form consists solely of a dragon head and two claws. And all three have different movesets. The most notable moves are the ultimate war cry from the head, a breath attack that doesn't get its damage reduced because it's neither fire nor ice; and Zing, a revive spell that one of the claws has. And since the fight only ends if you destroy all three, it's entirely possible that it'll drag on due to poor luck as it can either revive the other claw or their head with half their max HP.

There's also Ice King from "Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd you Steal our Garbage?" Although I don't know if he counts since he's the second to last boss and the game just pretends he's the final. He's the last boss you fight on foot, at least.
And there are so many more examples we could allow if we count non-final bosses as well. The Sand Kingdom boss from Odyssey, Wham Bam Rock/Jewel, the King Kong boss from Little Big Planet PSP... Obviously, that list could go forever.

My favourite “two hands and a face” boss has got to be The Darkest Lord from Miitopia. It’s not exactly that format, as you fight each hand separately and you fight the head as well! However it uses it’s design creatively by having you split up your ten-man squadron into two teams of three and one team of four, so you end up using all of your teammates you’ve accumulated throughout your journey.
Each hand uses attacks based on certain moves from certain Miitopia classes and the main head fight is so cinematic and dramatic! I think it’s a wonderful fight with a boss design that has been utilised many times before.

the first boss is a weird dragon that lies on the floor, it attacks with it's tail, and spikes from it's chest, and spits out smaller enemies for you to fight.
-surprisingly, shooting it's head doesn't hurt it, you have to hit it's HIDDEN heart, between the spikes and the head!
the SECOND boss sort of fits (but it's not the FINAL boss), it's head sits still at the top, and it tries to hurt you with it's hands, that come in from the sides of the screen.
-it ALSO has a HIDDEN weak point, you have to shoot it in the SHOULDERS to disable it's hands, shooting the hands doesn't hurt it at all!
that game had a unique control set: joystick to move, turn a knob to aim, push the knob down to shoot.
you could also buy "drones" to help out by blocking attacks, you could move them to different spots by turning the knob while NOT shooting!
