    Reminds me of an old coworker. He got a TDI and the water pump went bad. They quoted him at $1,200 because it had two pumps. He returned it to the dealership. Then proceeded to say, "I don't get why it's plastic." I responded, "planned obsolescence."

    • @TonyRule
      @TonyRule 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lighter. Cheaper (not for the buyer, but the manufacturer).
      You make it sound like you think a waterpump never failed before they were plastic. There's only a seal, gasket, impeller, and bearing to fail in a plastic one - the same as a cast metal one, and none of them are fundamentally different to that which would be part of a metal pump.

    • @86LukeM
      @86LukeM 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TonyRule most cars have metal. Which in the grand scheme of things. Plastic doesn't hold up to heat cycling like metal. I would say the old "German engineering." But my current car and last one have plastic components that connect the engine cooling hoses. One actually broke on me. Even typing it out reminds me I probably should replace it on my current car. But the part in question was so badly deteriorated from heat cycles it crumbled in my hand. It didn't take much pressure. I actually was trying to replace the coolant overflow tank, because the old one was opaque. Broke a piece off the T and had to replace it. On another note I had two water pumps fail that were metal. First one I think was actually the gasket, not the pump. Second one was cheap aftermarket and not OEM. Both metal and a pain to work on. Placed in the back of the engine required a special tool.
      After writing this makes me wanna swap out those plastic cooling parts. Cheap insurance. Someone else already changed one to what looks like metal... but not OEM.

      @@M4sterT3ch Garbage engine? Now don't get me wrong, it's maybe a little over engineered and not as easy to work on as other engines, but my 2012 2.0T engine is bullet proof and my 2015 1.8T has been very reliable to this day.

    • @M4sterT3ch
      @M4sterT3ch หลายเดือนก่อน

      @speakdino10 Absolutely, it's garbage. Water pumps leak due to premature cam girdle leaks. Turbo waste gate wears out prematurely, causing under boost. PCV valve ruptures causing a loud screeching sound due to air being sucked in the front crank seal. These are all pattern failures, and the list goes on and on. A buddy of mine had 2012 tiguan with the 2.0Turd platform and experienced all of these issues before 100k, plus more. The oil was changed every 5k and the car was not romped on. The final straw was the low oil pressure light coming on due to balance shaft bearing failure at 120k. Repaired several other customer vehicles with same issues. It's a very over-engineered platform that's good for about 60k before all the problems start to occur. Steer clear of VW.

    Done one of these myself recently on a golf, what a pain in the ass having to remove high pressure fuel lines just to get the manifold out, I left the water pump tho and just replaced the gasket and the plastic jointer between the pump and the oil cooler
