I think the grandmother was chosen before Moana, the grandma had a son, Moana’s father. Moana’s father did NOT pass the “test”, leaving him unchosen. The same thing happened to everyone else. So, her grandma decided to give the heart to Moana, after the others failed before her. Not to mention, the heart protected the grandmother( as I’ve heard) the grandma dies very, very soon after she gave the heart to Moana. IF you read this all the way to this point, good job ty lysm

Remember what Moana's mother told her "He begged to be on that boat" While I believe Moana's father was certainly drawn to the ocean and to go beyond the Reef, I believe, for him, it was more of a "Rebel against the norm" draw then a "You are chosen" draw. Notice Moana's reaction. She not only turns to leaving the island as a DEFAULT solution or idea to a problem, she has an entire song dedicated to her pure, and almost involuntarily OBSESSION with leaving the island.
This also explains her father's reaction a bit better. He sees in her, like Grandma and her mom, himself. But only at first. Notice in the song, "Where you are." his reactions intensify, and his explanations are for the "You don't understand/don't rebel" stance on the issue. It seems pretty clear that initially he thinks that her draw to the Ocean is just like his, artificial, fleeting, and changeable. He clearly has never been drawn with the same obsession Moana has, and he shows it in his frustration of "Why can't you stop" mentality. I think as time goes on, he starts to realize that her reaction is different from his. Instead of himself, he starts to see his friend in her. His friend who begged to be out on the ocean and go beyond the reef with him. His friend who died. This makes him more scared and intensifies his reactions to her further. Now he revisits his mistake and another chance to fight against the current he feels will certainly kill his daughter.
This also explains the difference in trial by the ocean. It was the same trial, if you consider the roles of Moana's dad and his friend flipped. The Pig survived. So did Moana's dad. Yeah sure they were tossed to sea and put in moderate danger, but look at what happened to Moana. The Ocean pulled her down... like it pulled down her dad's friend. She had to rescue herself. His friend couldn't. Her father couldn't save him, and he couldn't save himself. It is a very grim concept I know, but like you said, this trial is to show the reality that you CAN DIE doing this. In the end, he died in the trial because like you pointed out Maui said "The ocean doesn't help you, you help yourself." The trial wasn't for Moana's dad to save his friend. It was for his friend to overcome the danger of the ocean. Which he failed.

I think that the ocean didn't return the heart because Ta-Ka (Tafiti) is a lava monster without her heart. We can obviously see in the movie that Ta-Ka cannot touch the water, therefore the Ocean cannot return the heart, a living person or thing has to return it.

Here's my theory:
Warning spoilers.
The reason the ocean couldn't have taken the heart back was because Te Ka was Te Fiti. Remember the scene where Te Ka slips and her hand falls in the water? If the ocean brought the heart to her, it would just kill her. I'm pretty sure that killing Te Fiti wasn't the goal of the whole voyage. Please don't hate on me for my theory.
Rachel Ward But remember how the ocean basically threw the heart at Maui from so far away? It could just throw the heart to Te Ka
But there is no guarantee that it would land in the right spot. Plus it is unkown what Te Ka would do with the heart. Would she place it were it belonged? Or would she use for evil. Moana was able to calm Te Ka down so she could place the Heart in the correct place.
Since Te Ka is just a pissed/fiery version of Te Fiti, I'm sure she knew where to put her own heart... -_-
And the ocean totally could have just threw the heart on the rock, but doesn't because... story

Rosestar, te ka isn't really just a pissed off version of te fiti. Moana's song "who you are" demonstrates this perfectly. Te fiti seems to have something comparable to multiple personality disorder, and moana managed to help trigger her change back. However, te ka may still have known where to put the heart. On the other hand, the heart is TINY (which i write in big letters). It's possible te ka wouldn't even be able to see it. It didn't seem to see it on moana until she managed to catch the light in the exact right way. Te ka probably would've thought that it was just being splashed at.

Also turtles in Polynesian culture symbolize navigation. The ocean chose a turtle as a test subject for Moana as a symbol.
and a turtle was carved on the bow of Moana's boat. I thought it was a reference to the turtle she saved, but if it is a symbol of navigation, it makes sense for them to be carved on boats for their own sake

Great theory but here is mine. I think Maui is either Moana's grandfather or great grandfather. Hear me out, all the tests that you have suggested I think Maui's generation was in charge of fixing the wrongs he made. In the beginning of Moana the grandmother knows an awful lot about the sea and which creature she is going to be reincarnated as. She also has that special necklace which holds the heart of Ta Fiti perfectly and hides its magic. (more on that later) She knows Moana to be chosen since her father refused to go back out to the sea and waited for the sea to introduce them self to Moana. There are five points that I have noticed with this: 1. The necklace that Gramma has. I think the sea personally gave it to Gramma or Gramma's mother so that Maui's generation could fix the wrong that he brought upon the world. I think the sea personally made the necklace so that the heart of Ta Fiti could be returned without being recognized. 2. The Gramma knows an awful lot about the story of Ta Fiti and she knew that Ta Ka was Ta Fiti (listen again as she tells the story in the beginning :) The sea also knew that Ta Ka was Ta Fiti how could it not. If Ta Ka could be destroyed by just the sea due to water why hasn't the sea done it before. Because the sea did not want to hurt Ta Fiti the sea wanted to help her. 3. The Gramma only hangs to this world until Moana decides to put the heart back. Case in point after Moana learns about they were descended from voyagers the Gramma shows so much pain and hurt. Why not before? Because she was holding on so that she could travel with her and help Moana on this journey as the Mantee spirit creature that comes to life as soon as the life goes out in Gramma's room (ie Gramma dies). 3. I think the reason why Moana gets shipwrecked the first time is because she did not have the Heart of Ta Fiti. Case in point her father also tried to leave but did not have the heart with him so the sea would not allow him to go beyond the reef. Since his friend died though he refused to ever try again and threw the Heart of Ta Fiti into the sea which is why it is so close to the shore of Montuni. 4. Moana's father's build is more like Maui than any of the other gentlemen on the island even the chief when they were voyagers were not built like Moana's father. 5. After Gramma tells Moana about the fish hook end being where the elders thought Maui was she sits down and sighs as if reminiscing of maybe being there.... Anyway I think Moana is a descendant of Maui and that would make sure a Demi Demi Demi god which is why she did not die in the realm of monsters. What do you think?

the central pendant is the same, but it looks like the necklace has been remade over time due to wear and tear or the wearer's personal style. The central pendant is the important part and serves as both the holder of Te Fiti's heart and the symbol of the Master Wayfarer passed down through the generations.
When Moana's people stopped voyaging, the necklace also had to take on a new significance in order to be passed down to Grandmother now (and not lost througout the generations). Perhaps Storytellers are the land dwellers version of a Master Wayfarer as they sing "We are explorers reading every sign, We tell the stories of our elders in a never-ending chain, we know the way." Both Storytellers and Wayfarers remember where they come from and plot a course for the future.

So this is an older video so nobodys gonna read it anyway but:
Looking at the princess movies of the last decade , I think Disney is trying to establish the more modern and less passive disney princess. (Yes we kind of knew that dumbdumb-Me) The latest "girl protagonists" were all breaking out or escaping from something . Leaving things behind be it family made restrictions or society and it's bindings. Following this idea I think they wanted to make moana go one step further . She has the adorable sidekick which is Pua. Classical princess material. But when they leave together not only she doesnt make it but Pua is keeping her back by nearly drowning and Moana has to save him (?) Her? Nevermind :) When she tries again she willingly leaves behind Pua and so aswell this trait of a disney princess of having a helpful cute sidekick. She did not take Heihei with her on purpose. Also Moana has a bad conscience fo eating pork infront of Pua because: nobody would eat a disney sidekick. Heihei however gets threatend to be eaten multiple times. He /she (?) is clearly a regular animal. ( not just that he (i'm going with he) is also super stupid ) He's not helpful or even cute at all. Nope! Except for this one scene where he catches the heart he is rather causing Problems. Pua is the old disney princess part of Moanas charactere that would have stayed on the island and did what tradition asked her to do. Heihei is the unpredictable new side of her self or rather what she suppressed for making her father happy. Or maybe even just her childish side. Remember how she an Pua tried to leave the island sometimes in the "where you are" scene and later also gives her her rudder to make her try again? Later when Pua almost drowned he is afraid and runs away as he only looks at the boat!
So long story short: I think the Pau vs HeiHei conflict and the pretty useless existence of Pua (in terms of "why introducing him when hes just cute but not relevant?") is to show not only Moanas charactere development but the development of disney princesses itself!

I saved a baby Sea Turtle whilst on holiday in Florida back when I was a kid, the next day I got knocked off my body board, dragged underwater by the current and was rescued by a dolphin! lol . ( True story)

None taken ... but yes that did indeed happen ... I didn't realize the identity of my rescuer (I was unconscious) until I was told by people who had seen the dolphin bring me part way into the shallows and they then thankfully got me out of the water onto the beach. I like to think it as a form of karma and also really good luck.... however I now have a fear of swimming in the ocean, unlike Moana. LOL. :)

Aliyah Medley I always thought it was foreshadowing the end of the movie when joy and sadness work together to create shared core memories that are half yellow and half blue. I also think it has something to do with when joy cries and feels sad in memory dump when bing bong disappears/dies , she discovers both her and Riley don't always have to be happy and that accepting the way you feel isn't always a bad thing. she discovers this when sadness comforts her and also when she see's Riley's memory of playing ice hockey and they lose and she is upset, she is comforted by her family and in turn is no longer sad because she showed her true feelings.

i read it as an insight into the main theme of the story: happiness is complicated. you can't fully experience joy if you haven't experienced sadness, the two are linked so closely together in the film for this reason.

but the whole movie is filled with symbolism, there's barely any elements to it that don't have meaning, it's a masterpiece honestly. they could make her stand out in many different ways, the fact that they chose to do it in this way does have meaning. i'm not saying i'm right because it's all subjective but it definitely has some meaning to it my dude

Do you think Harry Potter is the only chosen one in fiction? It was a common trope even when those books came out (some even complained about it). Disney even has done it before with Hercules. But it's still nice if done well and you don't really even get Moana is a chosen one film until a while into the film.

I have a theory: Remember that Moana's dad and his friend sailed into the ocean? His friend died that night and he died *in the ocean* . I felt like his friend became a part of the ocean and since she was his (the ocean's) friend's daughter, he must feel like he has to help her and that is why the ocean is friendly to her. I told my friend but she was like "That's not what it says though" and I told her "Its a theory, Diana. Its just a fricken theory!!"

For the second trial the ocean didn't want her to go since she didn't have the heart yet! It was trying to tell her to go back and get the heart! The second time she tries to cross the reef she has the heart and she gets through no problem!
I also think that Maui was at one point chosen. This might be a bit of a stretch, but wouldn't you think that the ocean would want the person who took it to take it back? Also I really think that the Grandmother was chosen, passed the second test, BUT when she got there she didn't know how to put the heart back so the ocean helped her go back so that it could choose a better person. I think that is why the grandmother has so much respect for the ocean and knows so much about the boat, and the heart, AND Maui (most important part here is that she knows a lot about Maui)

I think the Maui can float actually. At one point after Moana is put back on the boat by the ocean, Maui jumps off and starts to swim away. But I think that he just can't swim that far of a distance.

Moana can't entirely control the ocean(because its a friend and controls itself XD duh), but can ask for help. As in the song the lyrics say, "I like how the ocean misbehaves," meaning that the storm makes more sense, instead of taking Moana right to Maui.
I also think that how much grandma knows supports this theory. I mean, legitimately knows (the ankle could just be that Moana was clearly hiding something). First, she doesn't just know about the boats - she knows that drumming will activate them. Second, her necklace. It's easy to assume she made its herself when Moana dropped the heart, but I don't think so. The shell is carefully colored to water doesn't affect it (not easy) and carved with obvious ruins long enough ago that there fading. The necklace band is also decelerated with numerous pearls, which aren't that common in an area so small. I think the necklace was inherited, just like the knowledge about the boats and why sailing stopped. This makes since when you consider that the stones simple presence in air is enough to call demons to it. A tight casing is necessary. Maybe other generations passed both tests: maybe some just gave up or the ocean carried the necklace back with the stone. It would explain how a child is expected to hold onto the darn thing.
Personally, I think it was from whoever was chosen in her generation. And they died. This would explain her love for the ocean in a village that thinks the behavior is strange. Grandmother clearly wasn't called to sail, but does dance with it, particularly during the of the tribes yearly ceremony. What if the one called was a brother or cousin. What if he gave the necklace to her to hold onto when they were young and shared everything. But he dies. This would give her an understanding of the waters call, how she knew Moana wouldn't go up the mountain and why it matters that this happens (after all, while showing Moana the boat she is dying and her last words are to push Moana). Someone close to her, who also continued on, gave her an example. If it was a brother it would explain why her son is chief (the ghosts show and Maui certainly believed that men inherited, which was true of the actual culture) and why she does this during the ceremony for the 'royal' family and heir, since ignoring it otherwise doesn't make a lot of since. It certainly seems like the ocean prefers this family's "never ending chain". Her dad doesn't know it was always men (he was a baby or not conceived) and chooses Moana as heir.
Don't know if others would agree, since I thought of this after starting Moana again and typed it right away.
[Oh! And I think part of why the water needed a human is because (1) it couldn't touch the lava demon without hurting it, so lava lady was supper scared of the water and (2) Moana's acceptance and reminder of who the lava once was was necessary to calm her down at all and water can't talk. Plus, maybe it wanted to help redeem Maui. After all we know the ocean likes being sailed on which was possible because Maui kept pulling up islands (I can't remember if the movie mentioned that since I was skipping around this time).]

Don't you agree with me that the ocean would have taken the heart and brought it back to the island for someone else? Trouble is, what's wrong with this theory is the fact that the heart falls down to the bottom of the sea when it takes it. Since it is possible for Moana's father was chosen before her, what if they had the same boat. If the sea is able to come to life it is obviously possible to bring back a sunken boat. Her father's sail did not have any markings on it. It had the same design as Moana's boat so why couldn't the boat reappear with the spiral marking when the ocean chose her?

What I love about this theory is the sea turtle that has to be saved is a metaphor for the tests Moana will have to overcome. Sea turtles lay their eggs on the beach and then leave and the babies have to hatch and make their way to the sea all on their own. If you see a baby sea turtle struggling to get to the ocean, you are not suppose to just pick it up and carry it there because chances are it will die shortly after. Sea turtles need that struggle because it builds up their strength so they can survive in the sea. The ocean testing Moana by flipping the boat gives Moana the opportunity to learn what she is capable of and build her strength and resiliency, just like the sea turtle. The ocean couldn't just let Moana leave the island because she wasn't ready, she had to find her strength first.

The simplest and most logical reason as to why is that he wanted to give the humans the power if creation, of literally creating life, since that is basically what Te Fiti did.

Moana was chosen by the Ocean,to save Tefiti, and as you can tell from the scene where Moana and Maui were saving Tefiti, both Moana and Tefiti look identical in the face. Remeber, Tefiti has a flower crown, and Moana had one when she was dancing on her island. I believe that Moana will become Tefiti in her after life, because, in the first part of the movie, Moana's Grandmother was telling a story about Maui,and how he took the heart of Tefiti, in that story, the beginning of it said that there was only water on the earth. Tefiti came from the WATER and started making islands around the world. In conclusion, I believe Moana will become Tefiti in her after life due to being chosen by the ocean, and in the movie, Tefiti came from the OCEAN.

That's what I thought, but then I realized that Pua wouldn't have wanted to tag along, not after nearly dying the first time. Plus Hei Hei came in handy every time he tried to eat the Heart. That, and I think that the producers put him there for extra comedy.

Also, if you look a the myths, Moana is the name of an ocean goddess, so the Ocean itself. In which case, there is some idea that it's not the ocean helping Moana, but Moana helping herself by using the ocean. I believe there is also a story I ran across about a woman that came from the ocean marrying a man from the land and having a child, a bit similar to the Irish tale about the Selkie, but I'd have to look it up again for more details. But some have suggested that tale regarding Moana's mother and father.

Theory: Moana's and Her Father's Boat both crashed because they had someone not chosen on them (Pua and Her Dad's BFF). You may ask "What about Hei Hei?" Simple: Hei Hei was also chosen by the sea.....or the Ocean didn't notice that Hei Hei was on the boat either and just let it go.

Ok, so I just realized maui was alive for a thousand years without his magic hook. I can't think of what made him live knowing, he's not a god and is not immortal. He even says " Do you see my hook?! No magic hook no magic powers." so why is he not super old and well, acually, super dead. Maui looks like the exact same age he was a thousand years ago when he stole the heart. Actually I don't think the ocean could return the heart because it's water and taka was lava, we've seen that taka can't touch the water so I'm sure the water also can't touch taka without repeatedly dropping the heart. Plus the trails were also necessary to make sure they didn't get another selfish person who'll take the heart for themselves.

hey @SuperCarlinBrothers I was just watching moana and I wanted to draw attention to something I noticed. during the turtle scene when she is a kid as you pointed out there is a chime noise heard when the ocean reacts to her act of selflessness. the same chime noise is heard when she tells her father "what if we fish beyond the reef?" this could be nothing but it seemed rather suspicious to me I thought you could take a look at it
