Some friends and I are watching all of the disney channel Original films then next we are going to try and tackle disney animated films. I say this because out of all the films ive watched and re watched Mirabels Dad is easily my favorite for taking her side no questions asked and thats kinda sad how low the bar is.
The movie was crap
Mirabel's dad is super clumsy and accident-prone, so him being married to a magical healer is PERFECT!

Similar how Mirabel's aunt is moody and emotional, but her husband is very laid back.
@@PatManDX Yes! They feel like missing puzzle pieces to one another like yin and yang. Pepa is anxious and a worrier while her husband, Felix, is laidback and optimistic. It’s adorable watching their dynamic!

I also sorta figured that the reason Casita didn’t give Mirabel a gift was because it was choosing her to be the next Matriarch of the family, and that at some point in the film, Abuela would die…
it was my theory before watching the movie, I brought tissues because last time a grandma died… it was in Moana. I came prepared this time lol! but Abuella didnt die.
I think that should've happened. It would've explained Mirabel's purpose more.
I think she is also what is keeping magic alive bc I don't think there is another candle

My guess was she did have a gift. Not one given by the house to make her special, but because she didn’t get a special gift she given something greater. Her gift was seeing her family as more than their gifts.
Her having no gift made it easier to understand what it was like to not feel special. And come to terms with the idea of venerability and not meeting expectations. Being the best family member to go to and relate with when the others felt like there gift has always been defining them and they had no choice to be anything other than there gift.
For Luisa she felt she could not show weakness. Luisa having to do all the heavy lifting and doing anything asked to her because her strength has no limit. But it truth Luisa always felt she was pushing her breaking point but pushed forward because as the strongest she cannot break. Not because she lack the ability to break, but because that’s her role in the family. And she can’t let her family down.
But the moment she felt even a bit weak, she couldn’t even let herself be sad about. Or show concern. Or tell anyone. Because she can’t let go of the facade she has put up for so long. It was until Mirabel came and hug her and told her what she felt that she could let go.
Because Maribel understood that her gift made her strong and unbreakable. But Maribel reminded Luisa that she is allowed to feel weak and it’s okay to ask for help. She is more than just her gift.
Which was Maribel gift. She gift was to remember and remind everyone that the family is not the gift, but who they are given for. La abuela was so focus on the miracle that she forgot who the miracles were for. And trying to keep it going made her lose sight of what was important. That the moment on family member was not given a gift, she was more concerned about the future of the miracle. And less concern about the little girl and how she felt.
And when the prophecy was given, she all but neglected Maribel. Which you could say she was being tested. And she failed. She never saw Maribel other the the end. But she was in fact the beginning of something new. That when the magic was gone, she should not focus on what was lost but what she still had. And it was at that moment that abuela realized that she still had her family. And Maribel was there to remind her that her they are still family gift or no gift. That it was her own fault for the end of the magic not Maribel.
You could say Maribel was to blame indirectly. It was up to Abuela to accept her a Madrigal. But she didn’t. Her fear of her and unwillingness to accept her led to Bruno running away and the cracks to appear.
TL;DR : Maribel gift is see past the gift and help remind everyone the Madrigal family is not the gift but who the gifts are given to. That they are more that just their gifts. And also a test for abuela that she failed.

What bruno and the other characters are wearing are not ponchos in Colombia we call them “ruanas” both are different
I just really liked the "Don't Talk About Bruno" song. The dancing and the cinematography-- the way the camera spins around and tilts back and forth as they paint this really creepy image of Bruno. And yet, like none of them are lying. It's all a matter of perspective. Just everything about that song and the visuals was really awesome to me. I also really loved Bruno.
As my family's own black sheep, I really felt for the poor guy. Mirabel too.

I know! The trailers were nice and all Disney, but this song and wanting to know more about Bruno were what made me see the movie. And I wasn't dissapointed, Bruno is great.

As an audience member that only speaks English, I actually appreciated that they didn’t do any subtitles for Spanish lines bc it made it feel more natural/organic, like I was actually watching a family interact naturally and I probably would have been too distracted to fully appreciate it
for me to get hit hard like this. you mean more normal? their making the movie a cheap thrill with what they got. Their losing their own different ideas for a movie. So, you like fake unreal stuff?
@@javierkiman8302 lol you sound like you’re getting mad and I don’t even know what you’re talking about 😂 it’s a cartoon movie by Disney about a family with magical powers. I didn’t expect anything “real”. The only thing real about it was the fact that it was actually about a family and their family dynamics and roles. I was just making a comment about my opinion about not having subtitle translations bc the creator of the video said he was surprised there weren’t any and I was just saying that I was fine without them.
Subtitles should have been added to the song. It is okay with putting in foreign words when talking since you can get the gist of what they are saying but in song I just feel like I'm missing out on something important being told.

I only speak a bit of Spanish but am bilingual and didn't watch the movie in English but afterwards I watched some English clips (especially of the songs) and I realised that a lot of jokes or references in the lines of the characters completely disappeared or were changed during translation so I'd agree with you. If they had added any subtitles to the Dos oruguitas it probably would've changed the way you understand the song as it's really deep and I love it for that
One thing to note: Bruno wasn't kicked out, his family actually missed him a lot in the 10 years he was gone! Bruno actually left and hid in the walls because he not only feared his visions would ruin everyone's lives, but because he felt shame for 'bringing bad things' upon his family and the townspeople, when he never caused any of those things in the first place. Alma did assume he left for selfish reasons and abandoned the family, but no one held his mistakes or choices against him in the end.
I'll have to watch it again, since during the film I kept thinking, "they're so selfish and shallow, not even caring that he disappeared, and insisting that nobody ever talk about him." It seemed like only Mirabel's mother felt sad that he was no longer around. But again, I only saw it for the first time last night.
I feel like while they didn't outright kick him out, they did make him feel extremely unwelcome, not only in the village but in his own household. They all saw him as a bringer of bad fortune, they have a whole song about not talking about him, so their behavior definitely pushed him to want to leave, even if it was unintentional on their part
@@Wawagirl17 They absolutely cared that he went missing! Pepa and Abuela were upset about him disappearing and very happy when he came home. The reason why they didn't want to talk about him was specifically because Abuela felt like Bruno abandoned the family. Pepa probably felt guilty and bad about him leaving and probably still a lil salty about her wedding- so, because her emotions are tied to her powers, she was very insistent about not talking about him to not bring up her guilt.
The whole 'we don't talk about Bruno' think was probably just a way to not bring up a contentious topic in the family. 'Keeping the peace' and not talking about something doesn't mean you don't care, it just means that you don't feel safe talking about it.

I think "what breaks the camel's back" for Abuela's Casita is that her expectations nearly drove one of her grandchildren to marry for responsibility, rather than love. Love was supposed to be the house's foundation, and the seismic shift away literally broke the house. The engagement was also at the expense of potential love for Dolores, so it was doubly hurtful to the family. I think that's why ultimately there was such focus on Mirabel connecting with Isabela (and not just because she was the only family member Mirabel wasn't empathizing well with).

English Teacher: Here's how you can incorporate a metaphor into your story.
The Writers: What's a metaphor? How will the audience know the family is falling apart if the house doesn't snap in half?
I love that Mirabel’s parents and sisters wear cool colors and Pepe and Felix and their kids wear warm colors. The warm side of the family is my favorite tbh, absolutely loved Pepe and Felix’s relationship, how quiet and quirky Dolores is despite her ability, Antonio is the sweetest little cinnamon roll, and Camillo is a very fun character with a cool ability that I see becoming a new heartthrob for tween girls. This movie was great and I wouldn’t mind a sequel or spin-off series.
I think we can see pieces of our own families when watching this movie. The one who is quiet and listens more than anyone else is typically blessed with a certain wisdom … they don’t have to talk a lot to prove anything.

It reflects the demography of Colombia in a way as well. Felix looks like a ‘costen~o’, From the warm sun splashed Caribbean coast, where people express themselves with color and rhythmic movement. Those from the inland mountains while not always the complete opposite, tend to be more practical, with Mirabels dad likely a Rolo from Bogotá being the far end of the spectrum.
I really loved that even tho Maribel was going on a quest to 'fix the magic' she didn't actually go anywhere. Even in Coco they went on a massive trip across the land of the dead, but in this film the whole film was set in the encanto, and was more about Mirabel learning more about her family and herself.
Yep it's magic realism is nice change instead of the typical fantasy Disney does.
Tbh I was shocked but AMAZED at how sophisticated this movie is, especially for a Disney children's film. For starters, I loved how they humanize immigration, more specifically, forced displacement by showing Abuela espacing with the others fleeing for their lives. But then they took it one step further by having her husband sacrifice himself so that his family could have a better future. Something that does saldy happen in real life and that this movie highlights it is amazing. That's one of the reasons Abuela has such expectations, bc she lost her husband and endured trauma so of course she wants the very best. In fact bc of all the sacrifice and loss immigrant parents have endured, that's one reason why they're so hard and expect so much from their children or grandchildren.

I enjoyed the movie immensely, and especially loved Luisa’s song. Her song talking about her feelings under the surface also alluded to more than just her feelings to me. She has the only song that references stories and events that take place outside of Colombia, example being Hercules and Cerberus, and the titanic. There was also even more references to Greek mythology in the visuals where the word was on her shoulders, referencing Atlas. She’s obviously more than just brawn but that’s all anyone acknowledged her for. That song really impacted me the most

this movie doesn't make any sense, it is in Columbia about a community from Spain, also about mystical gifts, yet a lady is the opposite ends that way. Never saw the movie, because I really cannot keep watching their badly done gestures and voices for those characters.

The mystical gifts arent explained because the "unexplained magic" is part of magical realism , a literature movement whose main reference is Gabriel Garcia Marquez, a Colombian author.

Disney isn't drifting away from the princess brand anytime soon. What they're doing is showing princesses as royals who actually do things. They're expanding the definition of "princess" so that girls can see themselves as such in a figurative sense, inspiring them to be leaders. Mirabel fits this new mold to a T. She's the granddaughter of the de facto mayor of her town, making her a "princess" in pretty much the same sense that Pocahontas is. Furthermore, she earns her place as the heiress through literal blood, sweat and tears. She's destined to become the next matriarch of the Madrigal family. She will easily become a leader within her community, and will probably be the actual mayor one day.

@@SersiSays Latinamerican culture is incredibly matriarchal. Moms and abuelitas are super important in families, specially abuelitas, even more than abuelos most of the time. It's kinda ironic considering we also have a very misogynistic culture, but the movie got the matriarchal aspect right. Mom's are very very respected in general.

@@mikehurt3290 Being a second generation Colombian-American, and never feeling truly connected to my culture, watching Encanto was so heart-felt and endearing. Seeing colombian representation that wasn’t drug-related or plastic surgery was truly heart warming.

Being Colombian it's crazy all the details they put that would go over the head of most people who never been to Colombia like the clothes, food in the background, the dancing, colors of the flag everywhere and especially the music
I loved Luisa's character, didn't feel the older sister was very well fleshed out though.
And the yellow butterflies ofc
I assumed Luisa was the oldest, since the pressure to support the family is very often felt among older siblings and especially daughters.
Also Mirabel is so similar to her grandma that throughout the film I thought her gift was to run the house and take after her grandma, which is why her door didn't appear as just a room. The Encanto knew abuela needed to be replaced at some point and so decided to make Mirabel the next gift-holder, which created conflict because abuela was worried for her own vision
That’s the interesting thing with Luisa is middle children tend to be people pleasers and tend to try to live up to the glory of the eldest and being strong enough to support the youngest (at least it was like that for me) and it creates a lot of pressure.
Yes! and also looking at the movie I realized that whenever Mirabel felt upset the casita started cracking so it made sense that Mirabel was the next Abuela of the House. Also the fact that the main door had her at the very center in the picture of the whole family, she wasn't given a room she was given a whole house.

I liked the fact that families still talk about others even when the say, "We don't talk about (insert name)". Like I laughed when in the song "We Don't Talk About Bruno" the aunt says, "BUT, it was my wedding day". That just got me. And then the whole family just kept adding. That's so "family" right there. Any culture. Across all generations. They talk. That's just how families function. We need to talk to grow and that's also how love comes out and develops in a family... but in an ironic kind of loving way. hah! (*Great job explaining Encanto, btw! And many other films at that! You have a gift ;)

My dad's the one we don't talk about. Like to the extent my paternal gran introduced me to a distant cousin as my grandads youngest so she could acknowledge me taking his place in the family. (Yeah I know weird, I don't think most people would understand what she was doing symbolically but I appreciate it, especially since it made her look like she was loosing her mind lol) but if he comes up it's and this and then that and that piece of @$#@ can you believe he did that? The way she says "BUT" really make me lol. It was on point to how these conversations happen in families. I am latina so I have witnessed far too many conversations like this (specially late at night when my paternal grandma and my mom would start telling us things xd). I love this movid
Only 3 complaints were the Camilo, Delores and Bruno didn’t get more song time because each of their parts in their songs were absolute fire I wish they got more to sing.
Oh, Camilo, when he signs the "RATS along his back" part--damn. Like you can feel the way his body contorts when he makes that sound. And Delores' "I associate him with the sound of falling sand: sh-sh-sh!" FANTASTIC imagery there.
Camilo and Dolores definitely need more screentime as it’s pretty obvious they’re the two favorites among fans
I agree, I felt like the runtime was kind of short so I really wish the movie was longer, I want to see more of everyone lol!
They definitely needed to expand on Dolores and her feelings for Mariano, perhaps giving her a song where Mirabel confronts her about telling about the vision and Dolores could bring up the pressure of hearing everything around her, whether she likes it or not and with all the secrets she is keeping, like her love for Mariano who she has to give up for the family, this was one secret too much. Afterwards, Mirabel could ask her why she never speaks up and Dolores could answer that it brings her a little peace from the noise outside.
I have seen many people comment that Camilo most likely has an identity issue given that he is almost always someone else, which I agree with. A song about how he finds his gift fun but often wonders if people would want to get to know the real him without it. In the end, he gets reassured that no matter who he looks like, everyone loves that goofy kid with a great sense of humour.
I’m glad they remembered that there are many Black Latinos. First time I’ve seen any in animation

@samantha ssmith Hey racist, there are over 4 million Black Latinos in Colombia, and that’s just the ones who aren’t mixed. There was no “blackwashing” as these were all original characters. If you’re gonna be a bigoted POS at least get your bigotry “right”.

There was no "black-washing" because as the other person stated, these are original characters. Acknowledging that there are different skin tones isn't a problem. You getting your feelings hurt because people acknowledge there are different skin tones is a problem.
@samantha ssmith Again, what are you talking about? Asian Latinos tend to live in the Philippines. While almost 7% of Columbians are black, more are mestizo, less than 1% are Asian. Being Colombian and understanding the huge diversity of rhythms that my country has, makes me say that the sound track is just a marvelous masterpiece hands down. Making a fusion of bambuco and joropo in 'El Camino de Mirabel' is as difficult as it is brilliant, two rhythms that are in the same beat metric, but with totally opposed syncopations, making accents difficult to manage, yet they nailed it in a really masterful way! And all the other music, the orchestration using autochtone instruments like the tiple (yeah, it is not an ukelele sounding there) with its emotive and romantic sound, fills those emotional moments of the movie with musical magic... A masterpiece, just a brilliant masterpiece.
They didn't do well with the characters or music, it is a cheap thrill for bunch of cash for that business.
I did kinda wish there was more Cumbia but otherwise amazing sound track that represents Colombia perfectly

I'm not Colombian or anything close to it, but Encanto is now my favorite Disney movie ever. It's so good and it speaks to me so much!

The artistic direction and setting is obviously old timey valle del cauca or something similar, but the whole special gifts for a family? Yeah nothing like that

I can't put into words how watching this with my best friend, who is Colombian and an asylum recipient, felt. She mentioned finally feeling seen and connected to her home again after almost 14 years. So Disney did great with this one.
This movie just came into my house and throat punched me with how accurate it depicts the struggles of an immigrant family.
I mean if you ever wanna know how it sounds when people ask me if I speak my parents native language and I’m embarrassed to tell them, just look at how mirabel avoids the kids’ question in the beginning. And i empathize even more with her because in both cases it’s something that’s not your fault but it just makes you different from your siblings or other “ immigrant children” and you tell yourself it doesn’t change from the fact that your part of the family but your scared other people see it.
Or just the gifts and their effects on the family members being like the pressure to use the better education and job opportunities. And knowing how your parents worked two or three jobs each to keep you on using your “gift”, of course I do my best without thinking about myself to make sure that I earn that “gift”. And abuela reminded me of my parents, cause she is scared of seeing her family suffer through what she suffered so she always animates them to do better. So you know she dropped some lines that I DEFINITELY heard one of my parents say.
Luisa reminded me so much of my older sister who always tries to make peace in the family and organizes or even pays a lot more for gifts and literally overworked herself to physically breaking down one time.
But what hit me the hardest was mirabel trying to help the family but simultaneously threatening the current “peace” by actually addressing the problems head on.
Because right now I’m faced with talking to my family about what we went through and I’m just scared to making my parents cry and my siblings angry.
This movie really showed me how scared I am of “breaking my house”

the way i relate to this so much, i'm nigerian-american but everything you said just hits the nail on the head, especially when it comes to the language part. i too have an older sister who feels she needs to carry everything on her shoulders lol
@@chaaaargh Hi, fellow Nigerian-American here. The movie really got me for the same reasons.
When Mirabel didn’t get a door I didn’t think of it as a negative thing, but the house saying ‘you embody me’.
You can see the house still clearly loves her and helps her out.
And it sucks when all you do is do everything to help your family, and you are seen as lesser because you aren’t seen as successful. If anything Mirabel is a trooper for putting up with it for so long, and when she does stand up for herself she stands up for everyone in her family.
I was ugly crying throughout most of the movie, and I almost started ugly crying during this video because of just how emotionally raw this story makes me.
Dos orugitas is hands down the best song ever. It hits hard during the movie and the flashback scene but on its own as well.

@@pouleart8197 I don't speak Spanish but it gutted me just the same. Sometimes a song can so perfectly capture an emotion that you don't need the words to know what's being said.

Did anyone notice that only mirabel can talk to casita? Like they would have conversations. And then even without the candle they still got their powers back and brought back to life casita like mirabel has the power of the candle. And the miracle is that the family is together. So technically she did have powers
Personally, I think the older sister is one of the best side characters Disney has ever come up with. Her song, man you can FEEL the pressure too. Voice actress did stellar work there.
i loved the dad cursing by saying "miercoles" which is the nice way of saying mierda/s#it in colombia, and the fact that mirabel had the bi flag embroidered on her top perhaps as a nod to stephanie beatriz's bisexuality

I really enjoyed this movie. The songs from Luisa and Isabela and Mirabel's "I'm not okay" songs where some of the greatest songs Disney has done even touching on mental health. My only criticism would be that it was too short, and that we didn't get the same kind of time with some of the other Madrigal family members.
Julieta (healer) being able to fix any physical ailment in the time it takes to make a snack, but emotional cures are as far out of her abilities as they are for anyone else.
Pepa (weather controller) under the constant pressure to literally be happy or content, because any negative emotions lead to horrible weather.
Antonio (animal talker) Always able to make connections with animals easier than the other people around him (could be used to explore a version of autism)
Camilo (shapeshifter) He's useful to everyone around him, but only as anybody but himself.
Dolores (super hearing) No secrets around her, people walking on eggshells around her (she doesn't get to see the authentic version of people)
If disney decides to make a sequel to this, I would like to dive more into these characters and get a feeling for their internal self.
I was really divided before the movie, thinking whether I wanted to see the violence of my country's history and present addressed. So, at the very beginning, when they showed that the Madrigals and their paisanos are "desplazados" (displaced by violence) but without actually showing which side displaced them but just the human trauma of that... I couldn't help but cry like a little baby.
I loved this movie! Dos Oruguitas had me bawling in the theater. I also have my own theory that the casita contains Pedro's spirit or personality, which makes it "alive" and helps/protects the Madrigal family. Like he's still looking after them even after all these years... And that just gives me more feels lol
I liked it a lot and thought it was a lot more funny than I was expecting. We don't talk about Bruno is my favorite song but I thought all the songs had great animation and were really creative with their transitions. There was so much detail in general though. The scene with Mirabel at the lake with her head in her arms looks like a picture. Super realistic. They even bothered to animate the light reflecting on the peach fuzz on her arms.
Also, in All of You, Bruno says to Pepa "That wasn't a prophecy, I could just see you were sweating" and in We Dont Talk about Bruno, Pepa says "Bruno walked in with a mischievous grin", which probably means that Bruno saw she was sweating and decided to make a joke that it'd rain, but because she thought it was a prophecy, she started freaking out and caused the "prophesized" rain to happen
i'm colombian and this movie was just delightful. they did such a good job i was actually making parallels between the characters and my own family. i especially loved how it hinted at forced displacement and armed conflict as it has affected the country for such a long time. also, the theater was full of ppl and everyone just seemed to have so much fun watching it. its beautiful to see the work that they put on making this and the levels of appreciation they have for colombian culture
A detail I just noticed: if you look closely during Dolores' verse in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" you can see Bruno in the shadows on the 2nd floor balconies
He even dances to the song! My man really just takes it in his stride.

I read 100 years of Solitude earlier this year. Encanto references that gritty book time and time again. Bruno even makes a joke that references the incest in the book. So great and so funny.
I read it over a decade ago, so while I don't remember it perfectly, the references were so clear that the book came to mind several times while watching this! I honestly loved this!

I love how Disney movies on Latino culture is showing how amazing Abuela’s are… Also show how intense they are. There’s 2 categories that you fall with Abuela, she gives you total attention or completely tunes you out. If she gives you attention is either to tell you how you have to work hard to bring “orgullo a la familia” or blames you for everything.
One thing you didn't mention in the song Dos Oruguitas that the two caterpillars are in love but have to let go so they can continue on into their futures its a real tear jerker
I thought Luisa’s song was a metaphor for the entire family as a whole. The pretty visuals were a facade to the town. But if you really look, really listen, it’s cracking and crumbling apart.
I just saw this film on an impulse and it was beautiful. the story the art the music it was beautiful but that hearing girl Knew this guy was in the walls the whole time and didn't say anything This poor dude made a fake plate for himself to pretend like he was still part of the family

I'm colombian and at first, we were very sceptical about how our culture was going to be represented or if they'd portray the country in the right way, the fact that the movie didn't shy from including such a hard topic as forced internal displacement and conflict really touched me and it was handled (according to me) with care and compassion. I loved this movie, I only wished it was longer cause I just wanted to know more! I wanted to see how Mirabel's room was in the end! and more of Camilo!

I wondered how it would've played out if Antonio didn't get a gift.. then I realized, Mirabel is the reason Antonio received his. Everyone put so much pressure on getting a gift that when it was Mirabels turn, they had forgotten the true value. Where as Mirabel clearly states that she'll love and support Antonio regardless whether he got a gift or not.
I loved the representation in this so much! I’m black so I’m always rooting for representation for everyone and seeing Antonio warmed my heart so much! The hair and different skin tones that everyone had was so nice to see especially in a Disney film! I’m honestly obsessed and impressed with this one!

Honestly, as a colombian, I was blown away by Lin's arrangements for the different rythms we have here. Obviously he's a genius but I just kept being more and more impressed as the songs kept coming. Beautiful movie overall, I held back tears a few times lol, only other movie to do that to me recently was Coco
All I see is Caribbean music, nothing for the Andes, pacific or llanos.

Most of the population of Colombia lives in the mountains, in the Andes, and people of the Andes don´t see themselves as Caribbean, in fact, there is some strong regionalism going. All this music was developed in the Caribbean, even Salsa. So this music represents only 25% of the Colombian culture, even if we all hear and dance to this. Is like me making a movie of the USA and only showing country, or rap. Salsa is very popular in Cali, but not in Bogotá, Tunja, Manizales or even Medellin. And even this salsa is like NewYork style salsa is not even Cali style salsa. I know it is a representation of the Colombian culture all in one, but the music is underwhelming, it really is.
I also noticed how the family relied on their powers. It's what made Mirabel strong in her own way.
Think back to the house dying and the candle fizzing out. Everyone was trying to use powers to save it, but the one who didn't have powers managed to retrieve it.
In my mind it was showing how powerful and resourceful someone without powers thinks and adapts.
I just love that the main character never gets a power, she just ends up to be happy to be the way she is. To show that powers was not what makes you special.
This movie surprised me in so many ways and I’m so glad they decided to go they way they did with it. Frozen 2 and Raya just felt like they were missing SOMETHING and this movie actually felt whole

with regards to replay value, at least two songs, Surface Pressure and We Don't Talk About Bruno are easily listenable whether on screen or off imo, probably my favourite soundtrack Disney had released in a longggg time
For context (we are Colombians and we really loved it) Funny thing when I and my family watched this and I immediately say the main character Mirabel looks EXACTLY like my mom and I do mean Exactly Physically with the curls and glasses.
That was the best day for all of us and yes definitely go watch this movie
Awesome breakdown. Definitely what I was looking for after letting the movie simmer a couple of days.
My favorite aspect of the movie was the little “hidden (in plain sight)” moments. For example, during Toñito’s party when they light up the sparklers to give to the children. I couldn’t help but say “chispitas” out loud and quietly teared up at all the memories that flooded in from the christmases and New Years parties when we did that. Also the brand name for those sparklers is chispitas mariposas, so keeping up with the theme there also!
I like the overall concept. The art is great, song is catchy, the concept hits heart, but I need to say this is one of the few that the pacing feels off. Maybe it is because some plot point feels abrupt, like Isabel feeling locked in perfection.
THANK YOU! It's exactly the same thing I felt and said as soon as I left the theatre last night! To me it was predictable? I was telling my friend that the best way I could explain it was, it felt like the story was written, not that it was unfolding before me. As soon as the cracks started in the movie and the prediction was to hug her sister, it was just too obvious that she had to heal the relationships and the ties within the family to heal the house. But again, as you said, I loved ALL the references, the details, the accuracy, it really made me feel like home :')
I think one reason is because there's so many characters its hard keeping the plot feeling smoother but that almost made the movie more unpredictable to me atleast. Its less predictable than almost any other Disney movie I can think of
I'll be honest I had no clue I was watching the climax when it was happening. But it's not a traditional type of film or story. Much more in line with a Broadway musical where you learn about various characters through song.
Glad to find people who feel the same way. Watching it, I loved the insane animation and banger songs

However, I still prefer Coco and Luca's storyline.
Encanto still has a beautiful story though, with a great message about family that's still grounded in reality (despite all the magic)
This is because it's realismo magico. Stories in this genre talk about everyday life with magical elements that someone people just accept so it's not going to have a big climax like a hero's journey would.
I love Encanto, especially the fact that they didn't just give Marribel a "One for All" gift or a gift at all. In fact, you can agrue to say her gift is the connection to the casita, just like the grandmother. Yeah it's not very practical, but it's a visual rep. of their importance to the family.
Play Surface Pressue and We Don't Talk About Bruno are bangers of songs and could listen on repeat.

It was really nice to learn that Mirabel didn’t get a door because she had the most important role, taking care of the casita.
But I also think that them not getting their powers back would have been an even better lesson. Powers weren’t the thing that made them special, and they finally figured it out. But then getting their powers back anyway makes me think that a bit of it was in vain. Sure, they appreciate them a lot more, but I feel like it diluted part of the teaching of the movie
I can see your point but I think keeping their powers was the right move. Mirabel kinda pushed her family away too (understandably) and distanced herself to some degree because she didn't want them to see her insecurities brought on by her abuela and Isabela. I don't think it was her lack of gifts keeping her from interacting with her family it was just that they didn't include her because she was so hurt by her sister and abuela that she just didn't go out of her way to interact with most of her family or repair her relationships when she knew they should have been the ones to reach out. Later when she does push to reach out to them and repair those relationships through those 2 magical hugs, that's what fixes everything. Not her family forsaking their gifts because that wasn't the problem, it was her connection to those two. Overall I don't think it would have fit the theme for them to have lost their abilities forever, they never thought they were better than everyone else because they have gifts or that they didn't appreciate them
One thing that I loved about this movie, is the value of acceptance. With gift or not, we can open ourselves and express our vulnerabilities by the acceptance of our family. Kudos to the makers of this movie and sending warm hugs from the Philippines! 💕

My grandparents are white, my mom has tanned skin green eyes, my aunt is black, my dad is white, my sister has white skin blonde hare and black features... Colombian families ARE REALLY AS DIVERSE AS YOU SEE IN THE MOVIE, I PROMISE!
There are some colombian families that keep on their original races like, on the coasts there are mostly black families, full black, in some other places only white families or full indigenous, but the mayority of colombian families... We all are just mixed and having a baby is like a mistery box... You won't know how they're gonna look like until it's born xD

Hi! Colombian here. I wholeheartedly loved Encanto. It is very well written and makes me feel represented which is beautiful. I recommend people to watch it in Spanish since the dub was done by Colombians and the music is amazing! 🇨🇴
So if you rewatch “we don’t talk about Bruno” (the song) during the moment with mirabel and cousin dolores you can see Bruno in the background on the balcony and in the lyric “do you understand?” He’s kinda having the time of his life up there.

i just watched the movie and i just wish they could have done so much more with the aspect of magical realism, i mean, the genre started in colombia, it's embeded in latin america culture, and has such a great potencial for visual media but here is just plain magic

In the scene when Antonio was getting his gift the flashback shows that she touched the candle then wiped her hands . Showing that the magic simply did not work on the door because she wiped it off on her dress accidentally .
My husband’s guess is that Mirabel will take the grandmother’s matriarch position after she passes because someone has to keep the family’s best interests at heart & what’s best for them will naturally change over time. Really love that take. Great video to watch! We’ve seen Encanto twice already and I want to go for a third time to pick out some of the details you mentioned!
To add to his theory, the matriarchs don’t have powers because they will have a lot on their plate already. And a power would just be overwhelming. Their powers manifest in a different way.

Yes! and also looking at the movie I realized that whenever Mirabel felt upset the casita started cracking so it made sense that Mirabel was the next Abuela of the House. Also the fact that the main door had her at the very center in the picture of the whole family, she wasn't given a room she was given a whole house.
I love the animation in this movie, the improvements make some of the character movements as energetic as the 2D animated renaissance movies

Loved the movie. First time through I had your same takeaway about the songs not quite matching up to Moana. But after listening a few more times, Louisa's song, Isabella's song and "We don't talk about Bruno" have become some of my absolute favorites.

Every family has got a Bruno that no one talks about... the gay uncle, the sister that left the religion, the cousin that got into sketchy shit, the son that didn't want to follow in his father's footsteps...in my family I'm Bruno, I moved abroad and literally the only person that communicates with me is my dad and that's it.
Bruno is almost a modern interpretation of Cassandra, cursed with foresight into terrible futures, but no one will believe her... until it all comes crashing down and then everyone blames her.
It feels like a reflection of that family member who is more savvy of the issues with the family that no one else even acknowledges, and is always blamed when they don't treat the problematic family members with kid gloves. I'm that family member sadly.
I've seen it twice and it's awesome!!! The music is great, Bruno was a funny punch, it was tight on the pacing and tone. And the plot was so simple and great it made me cry. I like to think the grandfather of the Mirabelle is the house, as well as her grandmother and grandfather's love is the source of the magic and or miracle. And there's a pair of mountains that is behind the house and leads the way to the river which the miracle happened at I believe is the subtle representation of their love. I hope for a sequel that shows what Mirabelle's gift is in magic which i believe it's sewing because of all of her embroidery on her dress and how she brings the family together like to bring fabric to make an outfit. I'm sure her father is a tailor and he was a good father.
The replay value of the songs are heavy for me lol and i was also so impressed with the animation And camera movement during the songs. I’m was so impressed
I love how Dolores broke Bruno's vision for her and got the man of her dreams at the end 😂
Dolores didn't "break" Bruno's vision though. All Bruno said was the man of her dreams would be betrothed to another, and Mariano was betrothed to Isabel. Bruno never said she WOULDN'T get the man of her dreams eventually. It's an example of what everyone did to Bruno in the movie and assumed the worst.
