I have a 2000 Cougar, alternator went out, searched the web for any information I could and came across your video. Couldn't of done it without your help. 10/10 0/10 to the engineers who thought it would be best to place it on the bottom of the car.Not to bad of a job, but very cramped under there.
Hi there! Was just browsing Mercury (Ford in the UK) Cougar vids and came across this. Nice tutorial, and props for the camera work in a really restricted space! For what it's worth, this exactly how our club does these except for one thing; at around 12:25 you pulled the metal clip off the harness connector. That's not how those work - press the middle of the metal clip *down*, hold it, and pull the connector off. In other words, the clip stays with the connector. To reinstall, press the metal clip down, push on the connector, then let go. If you want to see what I mean without getting under the car again, the air-con pressure sensor (next to the wash/wipe bottle filler) is the same and very accessible.
Orion40000 thank you for the comment sir. I am always looking for ways to improve so I will definitely keep that in mind for next time....thank you again for your comment and good luck!!
Had mine replaced about 5 few years ago . Charged me 450.00 . Thought he charged to much until he explained the process to me. Now I see the why. So glad I didnt try it myself. Thx for the video.
I came here after telling someone how much of a pain it was to replace one of these alternators and the video did not disappoint!! Years ago a shop I towed cars for sold me one of these pieces of garbage for $500. Said nothing was wrong with it, besides it just needed an alternator. Aw it’s not too hard. Hook. Line. Sinker. 🗑️
Probably one of the best descriptive diy videos I've seen. You broke it down and very informative. Thank you so much for sharing. I definitely hit the subscribe and look forward to more videos in the future.
Larry Taylor thank you sir. I try to make videos that are plain and simple becuase that's the only way I can understand it myself..lol.. I appreciate the comment and thanks for subscribing.
@@sonoilchamp most are 14 volt systems. My best estimation would be 14 volts. You should be able to take the old alternator into an autozone or O'Reilly to verify
I have a question. You mentioned a 3 wire conversion kit. What is it and why is it necessary? Trying to diagnose an intermittent charging problem. Wandering if this is meant to solve it.
it's not necessary but it does solve a problem with flickering lights and intermittent charging....see this link...www.newcougar.org/forums/problems/173250-alternator-sensing-wire-help.html
Did this 17yrs ago.... Now imagine doing all of this and the alternator was not the problem but the ANL fuse behind the engine near the firewall was blown and was the problem. Not a basic fuse and nothing about it in the basic manual on there being a second alternator fuse.
That experience would be absolutely horrible. This alternator is not for the weak of heart and to find out it wasn't the problem after changing it would be devastating..lol
Larry Taylor lol..I actually have one , it was late and I didn't want to wake the neighbors...you are absolutely right though, it will definitely make life easier

Currently half way through this job on a 99 cougar. I strive to have your level of patience with this crap show of an alternator job. Awesome video!

There is no need to worry about a spark because the battery is disconnect always first thing. Or, did I miss something?

It was a V6 but I believe it was a 3.5

I agree...i really think these manufacturers make these cars so you have to bring them to the dealership to get worked on...Money, money, money
3 days deep and have yet to break those bolts..
Thats horrible. Maybe try and soak them in break free overnight...that may help..
I just changed the alternator on this the same car now I'm getting a no start
Did you figure out the problem
