    With bad diodes, an alternator can drain a battery with the engine shut off, too. Even if it charges with the right voltage while it’s running.

      My alternator was charging while engine was running, but when shut off it draining about 1.5 amps, I tried to take it apart and only change the electronic parts but could not take it apart, so I brought ine from Junkyard, and it work fine, only drawing .005 of amps when engine shut off which is normal.

    • @dev-debug
      @dev-debug 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@LoganJohnson-s1n An alternator creates AC voltage so diodes are used in a bridge rectifier configuration to convert the AC to DC output. A diode when working properly only passes current in one direction. If even just one shorts in the alternator your battery will drain because the battery will be energizing a coil in the alternator causing. There are a minium of 4 diodes in an alternator, some may have 6.
      They are easy to test using an ohm meter.

      Get a decent dmm. Greenlee dm820 is a nice meter for under $200. You’ll get a lot of capability out of a good meter like… min/max record, diode testing, capacitor testing, much better stability and resolution/accuracy, frequency testing, auto ranging, way better response time, faster continuity indicators, relative/ 0 function, amperage readings (up to 10 amps on most),etc….. it’s a good investment. The cheap meters I toss in an emergency tool kit and use for side of the road emergency troubleshooting to do simple voltage and continuity checks only.
