Surprise proposals at someone else's wedding is quite often a Nightmare to the person being proposed to.

It's likely the proposer wants to do in front of family and friends in hopes that the proposee will feel too embarrassed to say no. From what brother said to OP, it's obvious that was brother's motivation. Unfortunately for him, GF was not going to play that game to his satisfaction.

This was nauseating. A 30 year old man having so much clout in the family and that from his early years. He went bawling to grandma about being asked to pay a reasonable rent and that stupid biddy took him in. Tough on her cause he’ll use her for her money and drop her like a sack of sht when she’s too old to care for herself and has signed the house over to him. His attempt at an apology was pathetic but to be expected cause he was never made to take responsibility for anything because the blame was always put on op. What a crappy brother. I don’t care how you’re raised, if you don’t have empathy for your siblings and take evil pleasure in seeing them hurt and punished due to your misdeeds, you’re garbage.

I have heard this story so many times now, but it never seems to get old. It has everything, drama, an OP with a shiny spine who gets the happy ending he deserves, the crappy people getting what they deserve, and OP's parents who he loves actually seeing the error of their ways and becoming better parents to both adult kids. Enabling your adult kid is actually harmful and definitely not doing him any favors. This is a great story. I wish people got what they deserved more often.

My guess Grandma the one who has been Golden Childing/Scape Goating the grand children and Mom and Dad went along with it because she'd cut off financial support (The parents clearly terrible with finances I'm sure they've need help before) and they've just realized that now she retired OP is the new cash cow. The attitude swap is just too sudden for me to think otherwise. Most Golden Child Scape Goat parents call the "bluff" at least till it's clear its not a bluff. Add to that doormat Mom suddenly exploding in the update.

My grandmother (mother's mom) despised my brother and I. She thought my parents should have only had two children, and we were #3 and #4. She was mean and flat out vicious to us. Luckily, neither of us cared. The oldest two were the only ones who got any "love" from her, but it wasn't much and didn't save them from her wrath completely.

Story 1: Let's flip it. This girlfriend is unhappy for some reason. She's thinking about leaving. Then her boyfriend proposes to her at a wedding. Not only is she unlikely to say yes, she's likely to say no a way where I can't decide if it's good or bad that there are plenty of witnesses. If his relationship is in trouble, fix it in private, and don't depend on someone else's event for the assist.
And really if the brother put as much effort into making his girlfriend happy as he does to hounding OP, maybe he wouldn't be in this mess.

Okay this is the best story I’ve heard. I know that my statement will be controversial, but I’m glad that it happened for both OP and his parents. Because otherwise, the parents nor OP would have ever been happy with the brother and grandmother in their lives.
Now the parents are renting to tenants that will enable them to pay off the second mortgage and the brother is having to live on his own instead of leaching or mooching off his family. Also OP and his parents have learned not to cave into the emotional blackmail from the brother and grandmother. One a side note they’ve also learned that grandmother needs someone to scapegoat or bully. Discovering that piece of her personality will keep them from slowly sliding back into familiarity of letting her get away with stuff.

I don't think anyone has to worry about golden child brother once grandma is gone. Grammy will no doubt leave everything to "her favorite grandson". Of course, once he wastes whatever money he gets and then has to sell grandma's house, spends THAT money, he'll be in deep doodoo

@@rolandhansen812 That'd be bro's best-case scenario. Bro has few expenses, certainly never paid back any of the money borrowed on his behalf. He just absolutely won't help anyone else. Who knows what grandma will do with a will. My bet would be her either leaving no paperwork and everyone struggling thru probate for years or, being spiteful, donate her house to some charity so no one in the family could have it.

I've heard the story before and to be honest he should have cut them off years ago. He wants his parents love and accepting so badly that he's basically telling them you need to do the same thing that you did to me as a child to my brother now as an adult. You want him to suffer the same way you suffered under the hands of your parents and they're obvious favoritism. If I were you I was just let them sink and figure it out for themselves. I get it you want your brother to figure out on his own but you really are the type of person that should have went no contact the moment it was obvious. Using your money as a way to get your parents to respect you it's not the way to go about it especially if they created this mess and don't want to clean it up for themselves but want to use your money as a way of getting themselves out of it

The dude should have cut contact with his parents the moment he turned 18 but he is so desperate for mommy and daddy's love he's using his money just to get it. And I guarantee it these parents are desperate and they're willing to cut off their Golden child that they enabled for years instead of just saying you know what we messed up let's get ourselves out of the situation and then deal with our sons later. OMG(I know it is over used but in this situation OMFG) The story where OP's brother wanted to propose to his GF at OP's wedding & OP put the kibosh on it was great! OP's grandmother & the brother are awful toxic people & the best part is OP's parents apologizing to him for being crap parents. The craziest part is when the grandmother gaslights OP to his fiance luckily the fiance knew better & didn't question OP about that insane GM's crap!!! I just don't understand how OP's gm could be such an awful person & gm! My grandma was the best & even after almost 20 yrs since she passed not a day goes by that I don't think about her & all the amazing things times & moments we shared!! I'm so sorry OP that your gm is nothing but a self centered c**t

So parents supported golden child proposing at his brother's wedding until he threatened to cut them off financially, brother left when he was going to be charged rent.
Grandma tells OP's fiance things to leave him so brother can get married first, shows up as wedding she was uninvited and turned back around.
Brother sends a letter blaming OP because he didn't get his way and his girlfriend left him anyway. The proposal was going to be all for naught anyway
Am I the only one getting supervillain origin story here?
To say this story was a rollercoaster is an understatement!

You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your relatives, blood or marrage related. You can, however, simply go n/c and move 1000 miles away from them as I did. And just like that the burden is lifted.

Toxic Family, NTA. Sounds like brother knows his girl is getting Ready to walk on him. and his Failing attempt to keep a good woman while being a USELESS MAN would ruin your wedding. I think its WONDERFUL your parents told him to STAY SILENT. and good on you for INFORMING SECURITY and the grooms men. He sounds like the kind of guy who would DESTROY HIS FAMILY if there was a slim chance of a good thing to come out of it for HIMSELF.

Nta. It is entitled and tacky to propose at anothers wedding. If he proposes have him thrown out and charged for the event. Stop paying for their mortgage. They took it out and it wasn't for you

That brother wanted to propose at OP's wedding had nothing to do with romance and everything to do with trying to pressure his (ex)GF into accepting the proposal.
He likely thought that proposing in such a public setting would make the GF say yes because if she said no, it would cause a scene at a wedding and "You have to say yes GF! You don't want to ruin my brother's wedding do you? Then forget whatever bs I've done before this to put this relationship on the rocks and say yes.".
