    Netflix's Death Note can only be described as wet bread. bland and practically impossible to get an emotional connection to. Additionally, Poor poor Willem Dafoe, showing up in the oddest things

      I honestly think Willem Dafoe was the best part of that movie. I really enjoyed him as Ryuk. Shame about the rest of the movie though.

    • @ScorpioTheScorpion1503
      @ScorpioTheScorpion1503 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm guessing it's because out of any anime Liam could have chosen, he went with a relatively niche one instead of a more mainstream anime.

    • @NeutralGuyDoubleZero
      @NeutralGuyDoubleZero 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@ScorpioTheScorpion1503 death note is absolutely NOT niche anime. Literally look up any top ten best anime or manga list on even the most basic non weeb websites and death note will be up there with stuff like cowboy bebop and dragonball z. It's because Liam picked such an obvious example of anime that people recommend that made them crack up.

    • @ScorpioTheScorpion1503
      @ScorpioTheScorpion1503 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      NeutralGuyDoubleZero
      Well, I’d say it’s a bit more niche compared to ones like Attack on Titan or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

    • @NeutralGuyDoubleZero

      +Scorio The Scorpion Not really. Not at all actually. Its easily one of the most popular anime of all time. Sites like MyAnimeList have it ranked as the most popular anime of all time above/or at least up there with series like AOT and SAO. Hate to burst your bubble but its anything but "niche".

    "This character pulls out this genius plan at the last second in the most elaborate way with no time on the clock."
    That's like, 80% of the entire Death Note franchise.

    • @GrugGangGrugGang
      @GrugGangGrugGang 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      The problem with that is, the whole arc leading to that is set up that is disguised as nothing.

    • @NeutralGuyDoubleZero
      @NeutralGuyDoubleZero 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      At the characters in the death note series are set up so you can kind of buy that they're that smart. And while their plans are often revealed at the last minute, its established they still had plenty of off screen time to think of them.

    • @razkable
      @razkable 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah..they claim light is smart and they hate how it ends cause he got beat but he wasn't smart in episode 2 caught his ass and he got lucky with bs like the t,.v. in the chips bag?..still don't know how that worked...or another 2 notebooks appearing out of thin air and someone with shinigami eyes who is looking for him he can meet cause time passes as hes getting closer to being caught and a follower who was perfect in mikami and oh yeah his ego did get in the way cause he felt safe with L gone...the show likes to make the underdog in the scenario win..which is how L and Light both die..except L knew he would die as he states early on by showing his face he had lost and light thought he would succeed due to others then blames them for his mistakes arrogance...its so funny to me how people defend him and hate the ending..i think its fitting and makes sense and is hilarious..people really just want to see the bad guy win

  • @SkuIIKn1ght
    @SkuIIKn1ght 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    It's actually hilarious, I'll see 1 out of every 60 comments on death note movie videos say
    "I enjoyed the film and I've never seen the show". Then when you ask them what they liked specifically they can barely remember or when they say it back to themselves they realize how dumb it is.

    i tried to read death note. i think i got about 3/4ths through it.
    then i reached a page where there was a paragraph of mello and a paragraph of near and a paragraph of light and a paragraph from the cops each explaining their shifting, convoluted plan and i went "i can't." and stopped.

    • @DylanAnantha
      @DylanAnantha 7 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I don't think anyone actually likes the Near/ Mello storyline. Everyone adores the L part of Death Note, but no one ever talks about Near/ Mello. I myself had to force myself to finish it.

    • @tinitunz

      "shifting, convoluted plan" is like half of Death Note.

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol 7 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      tinitunz yeah, but it was fine when it was light vs L and the cops stand off to the side, mouths agape. when it became a 5-way game of 4D chess and i couldn't even pretend to follow it anymore, i gave up.

    • @ScorpioTheScorpion1503
      @ScorpioTheScorpion1503 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm trying to watch it right now, but it's difficult. At this point (which is two episodes in), I'm concerned about whether or not I'm supposed to be rooting for Light. More specifically, I'm not sure if there is a reason why I should be rooting for him. He falls into his God complex way too quickly, with very little to establish him as a relatable or understandable protagonist.

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Scorpio The Scorpion light isn't the hero. the closest thing to a hero is L, and he's a neurotic megalomaniac. you shouldn't be rooting for light, you should be watching events unfold.
      you'll probably have a much easier time with the anime than the manga. you'll get to avoid pages where the text is most of the page and the images are smaller than the text boxes.

    Haaa... This is one of those moments that only Woolie can create, for some unfathomable reason, where I look at my life, and I think, "I wish X didn't exist, so Y could be judged for what it is, and not what X is."
    I could launch into a counter-rant, but, opinions are opinions. So, I'll suffer in silence with the one thought this left me: "I wish 'Death Note', one of my favorite anime, didn't exist, so I would have never sat through this review."
    I'd rather have *nothing* at this point.

    • @TheDapperDragon
      @TheDapperDragon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Ok, wish granted. I'm only a casual fan of Death Note, and this movie was, on it's own, one of the worst god damn things I've ever seen. The fact that it exists means the human race, collectively, is one step closer to whatever hell your religion threatens you with.
      It is a poorly acted, poorly shot, poorly written mess, with plot holes and contrivances out the ass, that would've been laughed out of the room had it not had the name Death Note attached to it.
      It is, in every sense of the word, The Last Airbender, Death Note edition.
      Here's an example: With the Death Note, in the movie, it's established you need a first name, a last name, and a face.
      How, then, did Light control Watari, with just the name 'Watari' and his face?

    • @WonderGamer101
      @WonderGamer101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Oh my God, I didn't even notice that, what the fuck.

    • @NataliaNeeSama
      @NataliaNeeSama 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      People often mistake what is good about Death Note (the original). People think that what is good about it is the Death Note itself, how it kills people just with a face and name, and how much power the owner has.
      That's not what makes Death Note good. It is the battle of wits between Light and L that makes the series good. The Death Note is just a narrative tool to tell a cat and mouse story, and that is what makes the series so entertaining.
      So the movie, if existed by itself, already loses the point of a detective story and how it should be. it focus too much on the Death Note and it's Final Destination deaths, and not on the game played by the killer (Kira) and the Dectetive (L). I doubt the Movie would catch as much attention of people if was just a movie about a notebook that can kill people if the original didn't existed.

    *THE GOOD*
    -The guy who plays L was good.
    -The guy who plays Watari was good.
    -That scene where L confronts Light about Watari as Light maintains his composure was good, it was something I would've expected to happen in the anime.
    -Light's father was okay.
    -Although kind of distracting, the excessive death scenes were pretty entertaining.
    *THE BAD*
    -Mia pissed me off the entire movie.
    -Light was a pussy.
    -The writing is cringey edgelord bullshit.
    -The reason for Light and Mia hooking up was stupid.
    -The Aizen twist at the end was stupid.
    -The movie doesn't really demonstrate how Light was a genius. They only show him doing other people's homework and that was it.
    4/10 not good but not straight up dogshit either.

    I wonder what the sequel would have been. Where could it have gone? Everyone knows Light is Kira, L is deranged and has a page from the Death Note and could just kill Light. They wouldn't be able to keep any of the cat and mouse stuff anymore.

    • @WonderGamer101
      @WonderGamer101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      They'd probably make L the new guy with the Death Note, and he'd resist the temptations of the Note, until he starts to solve crimes by killing people, soon realizing that he's just like Light and he needs to be stopped, but then there's like some demon magic that'll just make L keep on killing, until he delivers a final message to the world saying that if they find the Death Note, they should never, under any circumstances use it. And then L just writes his real name in the Note and the movie ends with a nice big bow wrapped around it.
      That took me like a minute to think up. I don't what that says about me.

    • @UnkoMunko

      Collin Smoot according to a friend of mine (who apparently likes the taste of shit), light is this clueless nerd, and most importantly, is pretty well adjusted all things considered. you know, light? the well-adjusted guy? who stands on rooftops screaming "i am the god of this new world"? that guy's apparently a clueless nerd and got roped into it by misa.
      apparently the director actively avoided giving light a god complex. because all that christian imagery of him being a fallen angel who thought he was higher than god clearly means light is a normal dude, right?

    Regarding Death Note story, it should perhaps be graded on a parabola, as in the first few arcs are good, but then it goes waaay downhill just after the Radio Station... and I think that is when they introduced Mysa Mysa, who mostly represents a shift in Death Note from being a serious story to some type of 'Super-friends' get together. Then it picks up again after 'Super-friends' wraps up. Nearer the end it becomes sort of like 'Dark Knight Returns' the Frank Miller comic, but I did enjoy the ending episode, which does its best to wrap the story back to what the series started off being about, which is about as good a praise you can get for a plot and tone that changes wildly.
    I actually binge watched the entire anime in a single day, so the inconsistent tone definitely stood out, as I was worried it would go off the rails entirely, but the great, consistent tension in the first big chunk of episodes is absolutely why I stuck with it to the ending.

      I don't like Misa at all, but I do appreciate the way that L and Light's relationship progresses to the point where L seems to actually stop suspecting Light, or at least hopes he isn't Kira. Not a fan of the Near or Mello stuff at all, but I liked the ending.

    I, a casual fan, watched the Netflix Death Note, already not looking forward to it (after all, blackwashing L, and telling us it's a good thing, because 'new story! Even though it's TOTALLY NOT and the fact it's a minority cast is JUST a coincidence!' put a bad taste in my mouth instantly.), but, hey, Castlevania was great.
    I almost hollowed out.
    My wife, a big fan of the series, just shook her head and walked away.

      Dapper Changeling I mean, does it really matter that L was black? It's a new American story, it doesn't matter who plays who in the end

    • @TheDapperDragon
      @TheDapperDragon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      In a vacuum, no.
      But when it's done by the same people who bitched at GitS for 'white washing.'
      Also, it WASN'T a 'new American story.' It was the same story. Just dumber.

      Dapper Changeling well i feel like white washing comes from the place of having these well known actors who are white just getting roles bc they are popular and new actors cant make their way into the media of film which is an honest problem

      While I'll admit I'm also a small time fan, I could recognize a dumpster fire the film was gonna be when the first trailer came out.
      My brother, a bigger fan than I, did no such thing. He told me he had to stop watching it after TEN MINUTES!

      Dapper Changeling so you thought the Netflix death note would be shitty, not for any of the obvious problems, but bc L was black? Jfc dude hide your racism better.

    But Woolie, what about those of us who don't give a flying fuck about Deathnote and only want to see the Deathnote fans suffer because we feel it's overhyped to fuck?
    Also, .hack is superior to Log Horizon. Fact.

    Ya know, unrelated to Death Note, this kinda highlights my biggest problem with Matt.
    It's Woolie's segment. It's about Woolie and what Woolie has done, Matt either has had his, or will get his, and Matt can't shut his fucking mouth for ten seconds and let the man speak. He HAS to butt in every chance he gets and try to be noticed and get his attention, because, oh no! Someone's getting attention that's NOT ME! Oh no!

      its almost as if they all interupt each other constantly, yknow, like EVERY podcast

    • @TheDapperDragon
      @TheDapperDragon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? Cus, listen to any other podcast. It's not
      'Oh! I know your story, I'll tell it!" like Matt does. It's questions or comments. And not during the 'what did you do this week.' Listen to just last week, when Matt was gone, and it was one of the best Podcasts in ages.
      And ya know, even if it was, that'd be ok..
      If Matt didn't do the same fucking thing during gameplay, over any and all cutscenes, or anyone else talking.
      The guy is an attention hound, and an egomaniac. Everything has to be about him, all the time.
      It's why he made a second LP channel, so he could be in every video on TBFP, and be in Max's videos, but that's not enough, he needs MORE attention, so he has to be in MORE.
      "But Woolie made a second channel first" as all the fanboys like to say, to which, yeah, a second channel discussing purely fighting game shit, (not playing), and table-top. Not LPs.
      That's not saying he's a bad PERSON, just a manchild. A charming enough manchild, who's a pretty nice dude, but a manchild none the less.

      Im clearly not going to convince you, but all i can say is i think your reading was to deeply into this. They all talk over eachother constantly, if your this mad at Matt, you must despise Pat, cus he does everything your complaining about like X2. Also, does Naruto, animation, and guns to heads really constitute "just fighting games and table top"?? the first thing Woolie did on his new channel was a Naruto LP ffs, what you said in regards to second channels is objectivley false.
      feel how you will tho, i get Matt can be kinda irratating at times

      You don't seem to realize that what you're saying Matt does is what they all do. All the time. They're friends and they interrupt eachother. It's extremely common.

      hes not smart though. like at all. Like they SAY he's smart but he never actually does anything smart until the last ass pull (that shouldnt have even worked given the rules they made in the movie).
