As much as its been overhyped, (and expensive) the Gandalf lp is a beautiful record and very much worth it. I really love Academy in Peril, how weird to follow up his more rock based ssw lps with that record of modern classical. Cool to see you getting into Ween! I thought I didn't dig them until about 5 years ago when I got into them and picked up 3 of their records, including Chocolate & Cheese. Enjoy all the end of the year fun Mazzy!

Love that Gandalf LP! Somehow I was able to lay hands on a reissue way before it was released on RSD this past year. I can’t remember who issue it but it has a Capitol Label.
Love that Monkees record. That Kodachrome slide cover of that John Cale LP is really cool.
I’ve never heard of that Ballad of the Broken Seas with Mark Lanegan In curious so I’ll check it out.
Ween are awesome! Love seeing them get their due finally.
I was lucky enough to find a Japanese original Vertigo pressing of the Black Sabbath debut. That album never gets old!
Some great reissues Mazzy! Happy Holidays to you and yours my friend!
Enjoy your New Years and then it’s back to work resisting the oligarchy we’re faced with for the next few years. I believe we will see the American people dissent like never before Gonna be taking it to the streets just like the 60-70’s! ✌️🎅🏻🎄🎁

I think Seal made his best music when he was married to Heidi Klum. Of course, I've never heard any of it. I always thought "Still Life in Mobile Homes" was a clever song title. I liked Japan's Tin Drum. Thanks for the reissue rundown, Mazzy.

Great list Mazzy. Good you mentioned JOHN CALE'S masterpiece PARIS 1919. BALLAD OF THE BROKEN SEAS is modern day Nancy and Lee and BOOKENDS is probably Simon and Garfunkel's very best album. The reissue of the year , however, is in my humble opinion H.M.S. FABLE by Shack. In a year where Michael Head has been re-evaluated as one of Britain's lost geniuses (acc; to NOEL GALLAGHER) this masterpiece ought to be in everyone's album collection.

best under-the-radar reissue for me was Detroit’s Outrageous Cherry - Out There In The Dark. Should have been on vinyl in 1999 but we finally got it in 2024 thanks to Feeding Tube Records/Cardinal Fuzz. A modern garage pop masterpiece.

My favorite reissue of 2024 would have to be Stoneground words 1972 Melanie Safka. The extra album of recordings were to be on the original release but only show up on this Easy Action record. Melanie put this together before she died. I wish she could have seen what a beautiful album this is.

Nice selections all around. There were two notable country reissues from the Omnivore group this year that I wanted to mention.
They recently released a 25th anniversary reissue of Kelly Willis' excellent album, "What I Deserve" that is worth checking out. In addition to the album itself, they added 5 live recordings from a 1999 Mountain Stage appearance to pad things out. But the real attraction here is the album itself. It is a great collection of songs, and Kelly's voice is just one of the best pure country voices ever.
The other release was a Flatlanders comp called "All American Music" released under the name Jimmie Dale and the Flatlanders. This is some serious country music. These are recordings from the early 70s, but they sound like a group that could have appeared on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. We're talking heavy West Texas drawl and an abundance of musical saw. One of my first music purchases after moving to Austin was the "More a Legend Than a Band" comp from The Flatlanders released by Rounder records in 1990. This new comp contains all of those songs plus a few other tracks from that era that appeared on other releases over the years. The Flatlanders were made up of 3 Texas legends: Jimmie Dale Gilmore; Joe Ely; and Butch Hancock. It's just really great to have these songs fully back in print again, and to finally have them all on streaming as well. Be warned though, that musical saw can sound a bit like a siren if you're listening to this collection in your car.
