Great video Mazzy . I was obsessed with early 70s Fleetwood Mac albums. I loved Mystery to me when it came out. I ‘ve heard that it was Mick’s personal favorite. Then Play On kicks butt also. I have an old jukebox single with Oh Well / Green Manelishi . That’s an interesting 45!

When Then Play On was initially released, it did not have "Oh Well" but had 4 songs penned by Danny Kirwan. It did not sell well. Suddenly, Fleetwood Mac had a hit with "Oh Well". So almost immediately, I mean within a month, Reprise deleted the original release, deleted the 4 Danny Kirwan songs: ("When You Say", "One Sunny Day", "Without You" and "My Dream") and added "Oh Well". You can seek out the British Release (I got lucky and found a copy in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1979) or buy the new reissued CD which contains everything; the Danny Kirwan tunes and "Oh Well". Also, "Station Man" from Kiln House was Pete Townsend's favorite Fleetwood Mac tune. He told that to Mick Fleetwood who conveyed it to Danny who expressed disbelief: "I would have thought he hated it." Liked it so much in fact that when Mick Fleetwood put on a tribute to Peter Green (Greenie was still alive but did not show), and Pete Townsend was invited as one of the contributors, he picked that song to play. And for those that think Townsend has his head up his ass and "it's all about him", he introduced it by saying to the audience: "listen to this" and he played the last chords from "Won't Get Fooled Again". He says something like: "enough of that" and launches into "Station Man". Suddenly at a certain part of the song, the audience realizes he lifted that riff from Danny and he was "subtly" acknowledging that fact. "Station Man" came first. You can view this on TH-cam.

Super enjoyed this! Your rankings certainly upended expectations (Tango in the Night last? Whoa. Though I do agree about the problematic '80s sound), and I appreciate the perspective of someone who got so saturated with Rumours in the late '70s that you couldn't revisit it for decades. I'm too young to remember any of that. In any case, your timing is excellent as I am wrapping up a deep, deep Fleetwood Mac and all things related dive. My top tier of Mac albums include (alphabetical order) Bare Trees (fucking LOVE that one), Rumours, self-titled '75, Then Play On, Tusk. I should also mention that I really got into Buckingham's solo work, especially enjoying Go Insane and his most recent, self-titled work. Thanks again for the video. (Btw, did you forget Mirage? Or did I just miss it?)

I live in Australia so I was introduced to Fleetwood Mac through the song Albatross. Been a fan ever since - and I like all the "versions" of Fleetwood Mac. I was glad you put Tusk so high. This is a great album. There were a couple of albums I wasn't aware of. Fleetwood Mac were great because they moved through several music genres so I found it difficult to "rate" the albums. Anyway I love your videos because you put that personal touch in and you use context. Whether I (we) agree is totally irrelevant.

l loved Fleetwood Mac as a blues /rock band with the great P , Green . Kirwin and Spencer three guitar lineup and rate " Then Plays On " as a classic but the Buckingham /Nicks later lineup left me cold . Never got into the bland A.O.R sanitised rock they played though l admit l am in a minority . Good vid as always Mazzy . Greetings from the U.K.

Being a very young lad ( not even in kindergarten) in 1968 , I didn’t get a chance to hear the early Fleetwood Mac records. It wasn’t until the mid 70’s that I was exposed to their record s and songs via my AM transistor radio.
I subscribed to your channel not only because of your wit and charm, but mainly to hear your stories and more importantly your knowledge. Those early releases with Peter Green are fantastic and I see why you ranked them high on your list.

Big fan of the bluesy period of Fleetwood Mac and I would buy all of their Peter Green’s albums, starting with the album that got me converted, Then Play On, with the long version of Oh Well, my all time favorite song. It’s impressive how many albums you have, and the knowledge you shared, love it. I do like both bands, the one with Peter Green’s influence and the one after, which I got to know more till I moved to Spain in the 80’s and got to hear Oh Well on the radio in the middle of one night. I really loved Tusk a lot when I first heard it, and I played it the most on cassette. I’m surprised you didn’t mention Then Play On! Hahaha, I saw you put it as number 1, spot on, we agree on it. I’m assuming you have Green’s In the Sky, I love his guitar playing. With your rating, I’ll have to go back and play them all. Great video, I enjoyed it very much!

"Then Play On" has pieces of jamming scattered throughout the album with stop-and-go interludes that make it totally fascinating and engaging. Couple that with the moodier songs and the fantastic "Show-Biz Blues" and "Oh Well" and you have a "perfect" record. "Albatross" is great, but even though it isn't a Fleetwood Mac song, Peter Green's "Supernatural" on his John Mayall album, still makes the hair on my arms stand up. I believe that Carlos Santana's sustained notes were already in his bag, but he did emulate/copy Greenie. Nothing wrong with that. "Man of the World" can bring a tear to my eye.

"Then Play On" is not only their greatest album, but is in my top 10 all-time rock albums in general; would put the red 'Greatest Hits' album at #2 as it gathers those fine Peter Green era singles. Fleetwood Mac was one of my automatic buy bands in the 70's too. I'm surprised and happy that our rating of the albums line up really closely (except for Tusk, which I would put below 75's self-titled album). Maybe not surprising because we're both class of '72.
There is a great 5 CD "Original Album Series" budget box of the best Reprise albums. Very basic but it includes Then Play On, Kiln House, Future Games, Bare Trees, and then they skip Penguin to include Mystery To Me (yay). It's about $17 on Amazon US right now. Hard to pass up.
I enjoy the CD version of Then Play On because it includes the tracks that were deleted to make room for "Oh Well" on the LP version.

Difficult ranking, that’s for sure. I think Tango in the Night should of been a little higher. Lindsey’s guitar work on that was beyond brilliant. His solos on “Isn’t It Midnight” and his own tune “Tango in the Night” leave me speechless. I must say though, I totally agree with your #1 pick “Then Play On”. Great review and the perfect order in my opinion. Thanks for the reviews of the Fleetwood Mac Bob Welch era albums as well. They tend to be overlooked.Mystery to Me being a personal favorite. Thanks as well for mentioning the late great Danny Kirwan. A hard to find Fleetwood Mac song featuring Danny's singing, song writing and guitar work is called Dragonfly .Greenie called it the best thing Danny ever recorded.

Really enjoyed your ranking Mazzy. Such a unique band in all of its iterations. I must give Tusk a relisten, of all their albums I own I rarely pull it out. I agree with your comments about Rumours, couldn’t listen to that for years because of the overplay. Cheers.

Thank you for your video! I love Fleetwood Mac (Nicks/Buckingham era) but I bought “The Pious” for black magic woman and to start discovering their other eras. I am really aligned with your ranking but Tango In the night although it has that 80s synth sound has some gems and it’s a little higher on my list. mirage is also on my top three but Tusk is the #1 way above Rumors!
And thanks for ranking “Say You will” , maybe the last Fleetwood Mac album should’ve been the one that Christine (RIP) did with Lindsay . As good or a bit better than “Say you will”.
    It would’ve been fair.
Anyway a fantastic band with the weirdest story and change of sounds and continents for so many decades! ❤

I also agree with your top pick as "Then Play On" however following closely behind are "Future Games" and "Bare Tress". Losing Spencer and gaining Welch which added another strong writer along with Kirwan and Perfect really coming into their own, created some of their strongest LP's to date. You described those LP's very well and was wondering why they weren't ranked higher. I respect that you DID rank the earlier blues period (At least some of it) higher then the Buckingham/Nicks era. I appreciate all your background stories and info, don't change!

I first got into Fleetwood Mac in 1972. My top 5 favorite albums: 1) Future Games, 2) Tusk, 3) Tango in the Night, 4) Rumours, 5) Fleetwood Mac - The Collection, of A side and B side singles including "Man of the World" and "Albatross". Although not recorded as an album, many of the songs were not on other albums, only on compilations. Therefore I will put it here because I love these songs.

Thanks, Mazzy! Lots of good info on Fleetwood Mac albums to check out. I bought the Rumors and Tusk albums in the 1970s and a few others from the Buckingham-Nicks era. But I need to check out the earlier versions of the band.

If I had to pick the most transcendent live concert experience of my life, it would be this: mid/ late 90s, Long Beach Blues Festival, a whole day tribute to the British Blues players. Everyone was there, John Mayall, Mick Taylor -- and Peter Green. This was his return to music after his many years wrestling with his terrible mental health issues that had him institutionalized off-and-on over the years. I didn't know his music at all. Anyway, out he came with his new band (Splinter Group) around 5pm. We were outside in the late afternoon light - and then this music began that just seemed to come straight from another realm.Time stood still and people were completely aghast and utterly caught up in what I can best describe as a magic spell. Unreal. Bluesy, almost psychedelic, (and yes that Hawaiian thing you mentioned) -- utterly transfiguring. To this day it is the one hour of live music that surpasses all else, and I've been to some amazing concerts. So from there I dived right into early Fleetwood Mac and Greene's solo repertoire.. I was so thrilled to hear you share my opinion of him as the greatest of those British blues players. You describe what he does perfectly. One record you didn't mention, and I didn't even really know about it until I saw it in the used bins and bought on a whim, is The Original Fleetwood Mac, an amazing collection of previously unreleased material. www.discogs.com/master/109228-Fleetwood-Mac-The-Original-Fleetwood-Mac If I had to pick one early Fleetwood Mac/Peter Greene album, this is it. And thanks for the heads up on the live in Boston record - I'm heading straight over to discogs to grab a copy. Thanks again for another wonderful video! Oh, and the Fleetwood Mac at the BBC collection is marvelous too!

Been a fan since I first heard Over My Head. I went and bought Fleetwood Mac 75 and loved it. Then Rumours hit. After that I discovered the back catalogue the magnificence of Peter Green- Albatross, Man of the World etc. I also like the Bob Welch era and Danny Kirwan is a terrific guitar player in his own right especially on Bare Trees. 1.Fleetwood Mac-75 2. Bare Trees 3. Tusk 4. Rumours 5. Then Play On.

  • @johnhpalmer6098

A very good ranking Mazzy. While I love Rumours, I tend to agree that it got over played and I can only gravitate to it on occasion even though I was a kid in Junior High when it came out and recall hearing especially Dreams and You Make Loving Fun on the radio, but other tracks from Rumours, and from Flreetwood Mac itself, especially Rhiannon, and Over My Head were fairly big hits. I have both the 45 single of these two, and the LP, and of course, later got the CD, though the vinyl is much better. The Speed of at least Rumours is faster on the CD than on the vinyl.
I recall when the song Tusk was on the radio and it seemed like it was THE hit song of that album, have that as well. I actually like Mystery to Me, didn't hear Hypnotized until the 1990's when KMTT was playing it every so often (when it was on the air, went off air in the early 2000's by changing format and call letters). It took me several years to find that album, and bought it for the song but ended up liking it as a whole.
For me, Rumours ranks high up for one being a much stronger album as a whole than Fleetwood Mac, but both are very good, and the times in which Rumours documents is what makes it what it is, but again, agree, it grows on me, then it wanes due to its super popularity and it got a bit overplayed in the 70's and early 80's so I take it in doses.

Hi Mazzy you had me at Fleetwood Mac and your personal experiences. For me it is hard to dispute your great list. I love the Peter Green period, the Kirwan/Spencer, the Bob Welch period and the massive Buckingham Bicks period. I love Tango in the night because Big Love had a massive impact on me... I was 21 in 1987.. the best time of my life. What I wouldn't do to go back to those footloose and fancy free days. God bless your channel, your experiences.. you are the essence of what a connoisseur is and an admirer of art for art's sake. No surprise your career is in photography.
