I restored this small Roman coin several years ago, and was quite happy with the result despite this specimen being damaged and fairly low-quality.
This coin was allegedly found in modern-day Serbia.
Attribution (as far as I can tell): Constantius II Thessalonica Mint 337-340 AD (RIC 56)
CONSTANTI-VS P F AVG Bust of Constantius II, draped, cuirassed, right / GLORIA EXERCITVS, two Soldiers standing front,
heads turned inward at one standard standing between them, each holding spear and shield. Mintmark (SMTSB?): Thessalonica

I have about 30 of these coins. My grandparents lived in a village which is close to a Roman town called Iovia In Pannonia Province, now west Hungary. I remember when I was a child in the '90s, in spring and in summer after rain I went to the nearby corn fields somewhere around the ruins of Iovia and looked for Roman coins. I always found one or two. I didn't even need a metal detector. Good old days.
Great story. You have to go far afield to find such innocence these days.

@@rerun3283 They were covered with dirt but I removed it with a needle. Now they are clean but I didn't use any preservative wax.

I would have loved to hear more of your thoughts as you went about the cleaning process step by step, similar to your first video. These restoration videos are always more interesting when the audience are gaining an insight into the expert’s thought process as they go about their hobby/work. Have you ever tried using a ultrasonic scaler that dentist use to remove plaque and tartar?
A friend and I recently found the same coin, actually almost the same..
Constantine I The Great ,two soldiers standing either side but with two standards. The dirt on it is incredibly hard, it has been standing in distilled water for days, but it does not come off at all with a wooden stick

At the moment I am researching the coins you deem proper for cleaning and the tools you are using so that I can one day work on mine as well. Maybe an ideea for a vid down the line?
Love your work and how well you clean without damaging the patina and fine detail of these coins. One thing i find odd is how restored coins are devalued vs tarnished, rusty and dirty coins where alot of the details are obscured.
For the same reason other restored antiques have less value. By removing the original patina you are taking the long establish historic coatings that are now part of the object.

That cleaning tip is it mounted onto an ultra sonic vibration tool with inter changeable tips ? Good video I often use natural soft bees wax lip balm seems to work well :)
I was advised not to clean my found silver coins with a q-tip cause it can cause damage. I dipped it in water and ever so slightly removed most of the dirt with it. I would like to hear your opinion on that since i would think that a scraping tool and needles would cause more dmage on the surface than a q-tip! The coins are mid 1800's silver coins found on an active farm field so they are allready quite damaged. Thank you!

Ancient coins are most often covered with a hard layer called a patina. The dirt obscures everything anyway and must be removed. The patina, if carefully treated, will hold up well.
If you want to clean silvers, rolling a q-tip with a solvent can work well. It depends more on your personal circumstance. I have cleaned a few roman silvers that came out great.

Interested to know how much you pay for these encrusted coins. I’ve been looking on eBay at batches that are about £1 to £2 per coin in batches of 10 to 20 coins. Does that seem about right to you for the quality of coins you get. Or should I be paying a bit more for better quality. Many thanks. Love the videos so far.
someone named jeffscoins has a sale going on where you can get fairly clean Roman coins for about 15 USD, if you buy 3-50 coins you’ll get extra stuff
You get what you pay for. $2 coins will most often be so worn or damaged they are hardly worth cleaning except to practice on. $4-6 will get you nice LRBC to clean, $12 and up will almost always guarantee a keeper, going higher and you want to be buying coins on a very particular per coin basis. Start with a bamboo skewer, sewing needle, good light source, and lots of distilled water for soaks! Happy cleaning!

Very cool video, I think though in your editing process, you can perhaps omit the original sounds, which are obviously sped up, and just keep the overlay of the background music, or perhaps as others suggested, you can add narration. I only mention this because the original audio under the music sounds like a possum chewing on sticky cheese. Just a suggestion as I'm not a professional video editor. But you at least have yourself another subscriber. Looking forward to your next restoration

Why not use a product that dissolves surface dirt instead of removing it with a punch?
Wouldn't it be more effective?
Aren't there products that remove surface dirt without damaging the metal of the coin?
Let it be known that it is more attractive if you do it the way you do it, more intriguing, but I don't know if it is the only method or why it is.

Renaissance wax is the term, ebay or Noble Roman Coins has it. I'm sure its available in other places too.
renaissance wax can be bought on ebay / amazon as well as most Online antiquities dealer. I would get the 65 ml tin , as you don't need much of the stuff to put on the coin. And it has a shelf life.

I am a total ignoramus about these things, but is there a reason why an ultrasonic cleaner would not be used to clean the dirt off such coins? Might the coin fracture? Thank you for the video!

hi, how much that coin cost. i mean are ancient coins expensive ? sometimes i see people selling 2000 years old coins just for 50 euro. but i think the coins are not genuine, original coins must be expensive not cheap
In coins old doesn't mean expensive. Low denomination Roman coins can sometimes just be worth a few euro.

Have you tried using the thorn from the hawthorn or blackthorn bush ?It's what the British museum uses to clean coins and artefacts. If you want to look up something cool, look up ,"Roman licking dog " it's what we found in 2017

@@nathanielscreativecollecti6392 I use rose thorns from my garden, I find bamboo skewers only last for a few minutes before they must be discarded. Thorns stay rather sharp for much longer.
@@jasonallain6153 I get that, I use a scalpel to resharpen my skewer as needed. Takes a month or two to use one up entirely that way.

Wouldn't it make better sense to first dip the coin in distilled water so that as much as possible of the mud/soil gets wet and comes off, and only then start with the needle scraping in the areas that are still remaining? This would obviously result in a lot less scratches on the ooin.
The coins are soaked for weeks in water. This hard dirt will hardly ever come off with just water, you need to use tools.
@@historyathome Well, it wasn't made clear if/that the coins were pre-soaked for weeks. But if that is soil or "hard dirt" then soaking in water for weeks will most certainly loosen the soil. There is no soil that is completely imprevious to water.
@@budsurtees4224 Whatever you say dude. Every coin is different but I can tell you from experience that 95% of the time a long soak will not remove dirt. Sure, the loose stuff on top will come off, but you still need to manually remove the rest.
Wish there was some other tool you could use besides steel. Teflon maybe?

You should collect the dust and send it to a university to have it dna tested and check if it is possible to identify some of the previous owners.

Looks like a needle and a diamond tip bit mounted in a micro screwdriver handle.
If you want to try, get a bamboo skewer, sewing needle, scalpel, fiberglass brush, distilled water, and renaissance wax. A magnifying light stand also helps a lot.
Dirty was protecting coin
Are metal tools really appropriate? Modern steel is much harder than ancient steel, not to speak of bronze. I keep thinking tools from tropical hardwood or something like that should be much gentler.
