    Strange how Constantine a Christian emperor would have a pagan god on the reverse of the coin. That doesn’t make sense

    • @historyathome
      @historyathome 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I highly suggest you research it more as it’s pretty fascinating. The empire did not convert overnight, the pagan religion was still deep-rooted in the Roman state at that time. Even though Constantine was the first emperor to personally convert, it wasn’t until much later that the empire officially changed the state religion to Christianity.

    Informative video. Now I have to go back and look at a few that I bought 10 plus years ago on ebay. I still have a container of dirty coins sitting in olive oil for about 8 years now. Lol. Since then i heard someone say that olive soaking is out of favor. My interest in ancient coins was lost for a long while. Recently I decided to attempt some cleaning.

    A little late to the game, but enjoy your videos and attention to detail. The holes in the designs that you refer to are really no mystery to those who have been involved in ancient numismatics for many years. Obviously the "holes" are created by protrusions on the dies themselves. Since they do not always line up perfectly obverse to reverse, that would tend to eliminate the "lathe" theory. With these larger and thicker bronze pieces, too much heating before striking would also have caused major planchet splitting which I'm sure would have been avoided as much as possible, and you rarely see any major splitting issues on these. Taking this into consideration, the "holes" were very likely just a function of a multiple-strike minting process due to the natural hardness of the bronze alloys and the higher relief design of the dies. The "reference holes" would have allowed for making multiple strikes of the dies with very little die re-alignment problems. Notice too that you will seldom see such die alignment reference "holes" on low relief coin designs of softer metals such as gold or silver.

    Question. Do you think that an ultrasonic cleaner, one of those industrial ones, not the tiny commercial ones, would be able to clean all the dirt off without any damage? Because I think it would be able to get a lot of the dirt off, especially if it were looser dirt

    So we have a ton of found coinage, do we have any of the original stamps and dies as well? I'm assuming they're more rare, but would be cool to see one of those.

    • @historyathome
      @historyathome 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good question! Yes! Bur very few coin dies survived because the old/broken dies would be systematically meted down and recast to prevent counterfeiters using old dies. So it's VERY rare but you can google some examples. If i ever am lucky enough to get access to one i'd love to make a vid about it.

    Thankyou for the video! I recently bought a coin from someone on eBay! It was a Septimius Severus coin so very nice! When I got I looked it up on wildwinds to get all the information on this coin and write it out to go with my coin.The bust of the Emperor was great but I turn it around I could find the reverse anywhere in the Septimius Severus area, I had bought a copy of ERIC years ago so I looked it up in that I found nothing! I was so disappointed so I took a picture of both sides and got in touch with one of the guy on Helvetica’s identification help page and 24 hours later he said it was a fake probably for the tourist trade! So I text the dealer ,he apologized and gave me my money back! I have got coins from him before and they were real! He said he is very careful when he buys coins but this one slip through!but the sad part now he won’t let me buy coins from him anymore! I usually by coins at coin show or the couple of coin shows in my city! But if I shop on eBay I look them up on wildwinds or my books before bidding! Love your video I will subscribe!

    Nice video, you are probably saving a few new collectors some money. Here in Germany, the scams are mostly the same, except for the fact that even low value third to fourth century coins are being sold and shipped from the Balkans on mass. People really gotta be careful out there
