That was ... heart-rending. Can someone please explain 7:13 to me? Did he, somehow, calculate that allowing his own demise would create an empathetic surge within creatures of all kinds?

I think the reason he chose to die is that he hoped he would see E again, just like when he told E to be hopeful that she would one day see the elder woman again.

In my understanding, he did that because he just couldn't live without her and since he knew that he, as an EI, was doomed to love, he won't be able to live among the rats, loving someone else again in the future. So he quit.

I'm thinking that with so short a time left, the AI did what only an AI is able to do, live a lifetime in his "thoughts" and done that with the E he remembered. imo 8 )
