  • Everything you wanted to know about our winch system (maybe... if you actually wanted to know at all...).
We run a pretty old school Warn 9.5XP... Kind of. It's a bit of a supercharged Frankenstein at this point- I mean, it's still got the Warn planetary gear system and drum, but we've replaced the old solenoids with a big f*** off sized Albright DC182 Contactor Pack, and replaced the old motor with a Goodwinch Bowmotor, which like all good things in the Ox, comes from the UK*
You'll also notice we're still running that old school steel cable, maybe you're wondering why? Well, maybe we are too... But that's for another video.
*This is a hilarious joke based on the fact Kate's from the UK and Jade isn't, especially since we all know that aside from their winch motor making skills, the UK is a bit shit. Don't even get me started on Brexit. No seriously, I get really grumpy.

Hi Chris, thanks for letting me know, it's the same for me, I have no idea why that might be, I haven't had any alerts or anything. It might just be a glitch, I'll have a look again in the next few hours, in the meantime maybe check out this playlist for lots of winch related stuff, if any of that's of use, all the other videos seem to be working fine th-cam.com/play/PL7VujqRb9-udCr4AN-gYSk_XQ5b4vfzXt.html

Between the tow trucks I've had with Ramsey winches, 40 series with both elec and PTO and F-truck with 2 hydraulic winches and a warn high mount I've done a lot of winching, and in my opinion steel cable is the way to go, rope is stronger in lab conditions but its not very durable in real world conditions.
If you only use your winch to get unstuck rope is fine and much safer for bystanders, but if your doing serious stuff where the line [or lines if you using multiple winches] is all that's holding you on a climb or if your using your winch to drag objects like fallen trees, wrecks ect around the durability of steel cant be beaten, which is why tow trucks, recovery trucks, canes, recovery barges ect ect all use steel.
It is very dangerous when it snaps though so for the inexperienced/occasional winch user rope is prob better, you just have to be mindful of it running over sharp stuff.

Interesting to hear that from someone with so much experience, Chris. We've put off going to rope for a long time, but recently made the decision based on weight and safety, but it'll be interesting to see how it stacks up on the tracks. I imagine it also depends on the weight of the vehicle it's attached to. Hopefully we won't regret our decision!

What? You’re talking about how you’ve been running a WARN for years…then go into every component you’ve replaced with non-WARN parts!? Doesn’t really support the claim that WARN are great winches, does it? I guess I just don’t understand what you’re trying to say.
