I know you love the smell of WD40. Try soaking your aluminum parts that are corroded in Liquid wrench, it eats the corrosion away. Then clean and paint as needed with some mercruiser marine spray paint.
I can't believe the motor stuck runs, mine didn't look half as bad as that corrosion wise, but it didn't run, also a tip on stuck screws, a little bit of heat helps a lot.
Thanks. In retrospect I should have tried to just clean it up (the motor) and replace the bearings. Instead I did something to the motor that I ended up buying another (slightly upgraded).
That sucks. I have another winch in a similar condition. With new winches so cheap, I'm struggling to justify putting in a lot of effort in fixing the old ones.
I think you’ve stripped further than anyone else I’ve seen. I’m also trying to remove the Magnets and could do I can powder coat the motor body. I am really struggling on the four recessed screws, even my impact driver isn’t doing it. I’m nervous about heat melting the insulation in the coils. I see that in the end you had to ditch the motor, did you figure out where u went wrong? I wondered if you had painted the wrong bit and messed up conductivity. I’m nervous that I’ll damage insulation without realising. The paper gasket under the coils for example, I guess it has a purpose...
I did figure it out, thanks to a comment from a viewer. 2 of the brushes are supposed to be grounded. The way I assembled and painted made them all 4 grounded... lesson learned. I should have just changed the bearing and cleaned it up some... oh well. Be careful if you're re-building the brake. Warn does not sell the individual components as they only want you to buy the pre-loaded brake assembly. They did send me a drawing that shows the spring in the brake needs to be pre- loaded about 1/2 turn. Good luck! Thanks for watching.

I can see how small things can lead to big costs and already blew my budget on the upgrade control pack. Fingers crossed it works.

Toilet bowl cleaner cleans up aluminum very well. I never did large items but used small amounts on motorcycle carbs.

My winch was so corroded the cap screws broke when the previous owner tried to take it apart. Now ive got to drill them out to get everything apart.

Yeah. I tried. I screwed up the motor altogether and ended up with an aftermarket motor... an HP upgrade, but I don't know what I did to screw it up.
