    Traded my manual M2 Comp last week for this new M2 manual. This one feels more like an American muscle car. Much less zippy than the Comp of you enjoy city driving. This new one has a higher gear ratio more suited for the track. Less responsive in sudden acceleration from cruising speed, needs downshifting which it handles readily. Burbles are non existent at engine startup. Much improved and upgraded interior. Extra weight is mainly due to added reinforcement for power plant and diff. The grip is beyond amazing which makes it harder to drift :(. Miss those special moments. I’ll need time to bond to this one I suppose/I hope.

      First off, congrats on the new car dude thats awesome!
      Like I said in my video, hopefully one day I can get either the M2 comp OR the new M2, I figured the new M2 would handle like a monster because if you look at the design its made solely for being a track monster and nothing else, hence why the looks are so unconventional, which I LOVE. Finally a car maker makes a vehicle where it prioritizes performance above all else.

    I think the G87 is going to age better than the prior gen. Less busy and fewer conflicting angles in the front end.

    I once made a controversial hot take on the G87 M2, in which I said it is closer in spirit to a Supra than a M2, and I'm not talking about the Mk5 Toyota/BMW joint project. Controversial design aside, I think the new M2 is a modern, German take on the iconic Mk4 Supra. Think about it:
    - Twin-turbo inline-six with enormous tuning potential
    - 2+2 GT coupe arrangement, just like the Mk4
    - a high claimed weight of 3800lbs (some independent scales reported a lower weight). For context, a stock Mk4 Supra weighed around 3500-3600lbs, modest by today's standards, but a porker for its time.
    - Some people even predict the new M2 won't sell as well as it's predecessor. The Mk4 Supra was also considered a sales failure during its production run, and only gained its "legendary JDM" status once tuners realized the 2JZ's potential, and of course the F&F movies. By that time, the Mk4 had been out of production for several years.
    Most of these points are ones you've already mentioned in the video, but I'm just re-contextualizing them to compare the new M2 to what was arguably a Japanese interpretation of the American muscle car.

    • @Jerseygarage
      @Jerseygarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Its something very true, and it seems like no one wants to talk about it, both the fact that the MK 4 Supra was never hyped until after tuning shops found out about the 2JZ-GTE potential, and that the last M2 is close in ideology to the Supra.
      And as much as as JDM nerds want to kick and scream about it, it is true, both the mk4 supra and both generations of the M2 are closer to pony cars in ideology rather than a traditional sports car, but god forbid you say that you will be verbally murdered.

    • @drjk7565
      @drjk7565 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jerseygarage I'm not worried about "verbal murder". If one really thinks about it, out of the three most famous JDMs - NSX, Supra, Skyline - only the NSX can lay claim to being a true sports car. The R34 Skyline GT-R is a glorified 4WD 2-door sports sedan, and we already know what the Mk4 Supra is.

  • @felixl.l.2060
    @felixl.l.2060 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've been dailying my M2 comp for almost 4 years now. I definitely think of it as more of a "pony car" in spirit than a true sports car. When a company creates a car, they determine a bunch of things as a first step: Where will the driver sit? how long will the wheelbase be? Where is the engine? We're talking the most basic of basic things.
    The thing is, the answers to these questions will be different if you're building a sports car vs if you're building something practical. And the M2 is a practical car. So you don't get a super low center of gravity, you don't get a wheelbase designed for something with no back seats and you don't sit low in the chassis with the rotation point right around your hips. And that means you lose something relative to a Porsche Cayman or a Toyota Supra/Z4. And honestly? You feel it from behind the wheel. It doesn't go around corners with a sense of effortlessness that a traditional sports car does. It's still got all of the sharpness, but not quite as much balance and you feel that it has a little bit of extra weight. But playing with that lack of balance and that extra weight soon becomes a game in and of it's self. Marginally less good at the twisties than a true sports car, but not necessarily less fun in those situations.
    That doesn't mean the M2 handles poorly, but it does mean it doesn't perfectly replicate the feel of a true sports car. It also means it feels more like a...you guessed....a muscle car or a pony car!
    In fact, it feels like the best version of a pony car! It's smaller than a Mustang or a Camaro on the outside, while somehow being bigger on the inside with better outward visibility. It turns in crazy fast and there isn't a car in the world that's more fun to slide the rear end in. It's just a crazy little machine that wants to be bad at all times. But that will also haul you and all your crap around, because my god, is this thing practical for a 2-door....

    • @Jerseygarage

      I have been dying for either an M2 comp or a GT350R ever since they both hit the markets, and I'm trying to get either one of them ASAP because IK 10 years from now they will be way too expensive to justify buying.
      And I do concur, to me the M2 has always kinda been a hybrid of pony/muscle, but the best of both. The engine ideology from muscle cars, with engines from bigger, meaner performance vehicles, but the sort of lightness on the feet that comes from a pony car, hence why I think they are so praised by literally everyone. Anyone I talk to on here about cars almost always fiends for the M2, because BMW has come as close as ever to building the perfect M car

      BMW said in a response for comment to one of those media outlets (motortrend, car and driver, I can't remember which one) that the added weight comes from reinforcing the chassis so it can withstand the new engine, and from the new features like the weird drift thing.

      I had someone else say this to me before, and like I told them I could have read it wrong or be wrong about this in general. BUT, if my memory serves me correct, I’m like 99% sure in response to one of the big auto journalists outlets (motor trend, car and driver, etc), BMW said it was the engine, the chassis reinforcing, and additional electronics that makes this thing weigh a crap ton.

    • @hardchemist
      @hardchemist ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jerseygarage For sure, and normally the electronics are there functioning in the background, and BMW gave us some additional ways to interact with the sensors and wiring already there. Also did you hear about what the M2 is actually putting down to the wheels? 474HP!! That means the engine is probably closer to 500HP at the crank. I'm really in love with the vehicle, hope to be able to order one with the carbon package which also includes, besides the carbon fiber roof, seats, and trim the "M Driver's Package: In addition to raising the top speed of your BMW M vehicle, the package also includes a unique 1-day high-performance driving class at a BMW Performance Center. The course has been tailored to driving M vehicles through various high-speed exercises, letting you experience the limits of the vehicle in a controlled environment." That's right from the website.

      With that being said, if I do somehow manage to pull the trigger on one, I'm thinking I'm gonna wait for the comp to come out. I wanna see what they do with the body styling to make it look more aggressive, as I can imagine similar to the m3/4, it will look AMAZING

      @@hardchemist The looks of it are a solid 7/10, they would be a 8 or 9 but the rear end looks just don't do it for me.
      1 have 2 other major gripes with the car. 1. The Carbon Fiber wheels look exactly like the wheels off the mid 2000s Pontiac GTO.
      2. Ford said the ECU was gonna be locked up like fort knox, meaning tuning is going to be damn near impossible at least for a while, which is annoying.
      However, I do really like that drift stick/e brake thing, thats really cool. And you can tell Ford really wanted this to compete with the M2 and other euro/JDM sports cars, and stock, even the dark horse as much as I'd hate to admit it is probably going to be one of the best deals in the sports car world for a while.
      With ALL of that being said, I'd rather buy the GT350 or the 350R.

Its annoying that automotive journalists MOSTLY aren't journalists anymore and tend to just be mouth pieces for car brands.
      And that is true, I have loved the 1M and the M2 line from BMW, and while I love CERTAIN things about the new M2, I would still chose the last gen rather than the current gen, as the current gen just doesn't make sense and is too full of bs to be better than the last gen

    Anyone that says the new M2 is ugly obviously they have not seen one on the street or dealership. I say this because I felt the same way until I saw one in the dealership and ordered it right there and then. Yes it is heavy because you get more than the M2 comp. You have extra brassing in the engine compartment and C-pillar, adaptive dampers, limited slip diff etc etc, and yes more electronic crap that we enthusiasts don't need. And for a bonus, everyone of the dyno tested M2 basically have proved that BMW is lying about a slightly detuned M3 S58 engine. They consistently make 460hp plus AT THE WHEELS, which means is basically the same exact spec engine as in the M3 and M4.
