  • Welcome to my personal review of old rambling Rose ‘ Pauls Himalayan musk’ an introduction from 1876 this is a really useful rambler if you have the space available
A particularly large and vigourous climber which is going to reach in excess of 40 feet so please do make sure that you have the space and adequate support for this fast growing and graceful rambler
Flowering just once in a season between June and the end of July it will produce a enormous show of highly fragrant disk like loosely formed flowers born in huge sprays each flower around an inch to an inch and a quarter in diameter
They open from dark pink apricot tinged buds to apple blossom pink slowly fading to white, once fully established the petals fall like snow at the end of its display
A great rose to plant at the foot of an unsightly tree, or to cover an ugly building ! adored by pollinators this particular rose will thrive in full sun or partial shade and on any aspect
Once established the flowers hang gracefully on easy to train but heavily barbed stems so a great plant for planting for security or safety reasons if you want to secure a boundary
Unfortunately,it’s a little acceptable to mould and mildew, especially if conditions are cold and damp
The fragrance is musk based it’s warm woody and almost powdery
    Fragrance rating 5⭐️s

Greetings from the Great Pacific Northwest, Lakewood, Washington! 8b. I loved hearing your take on PHM. We have had ours rambling up a huge Oak tree, and it has been a knock-out for about 20 years now. It is such a long blooming rose, never needing much care from us... just room to reach for the stars (which currently sits almost 50 feet.) It blooms it's head off for close to 2 months here, and what a powerful fragrance it has! It's heady.
We have another old fashioned white rambler on another Oak. They overlap in bloom time for about 3 weeks and when they do, it's pure heaven! Momma couldn't remember the name of the white one, but always called it the Vanilla Musk Rose. I'd love to know what it's called. It's only about 30 feet, but it's also well over 20 years old. Thank you for all of your wonderful videos... I just found you today. I'll be checking out many many more in sure. I'm subscribed😉. Blessings from Western Washington! 💛🖤💛 Stacy M.

Thank you so much for this informative discussion and hi from West Vancouver, B.C. Originally from New England, I am very partial to the old roses, but here on newly acquired property, I inherited a PHM (or so I suspected). As you say, dainty gorgeous, "who, little me?" (haha) blossoms, but in reality a Frankenstein's monster: engulfing, smothering, killing specimen Japanese maples and native hemlocks. It is strangling the treetops and has embedded itself and taken powerful root, many times over, in our rock ledges and has scrambled off in all directions. Falling leaves drift into the thickets and I'm looking at these high-up ugly tumbleweeds of dead stuff, snagged branches, et c. The canes are massive and tough as nails too. Well, off I go with my loppers and thanks again.

I was shopping for large ramblers but they aren’t propagated much in the US, except Paul’s musk and a few others

Hi Ben! Love your videos. Please can you do a video on your top ramblers and climbers? Also do you like Emily Brontë? Surprised she didn’t make your top 10 😊

Good evening I will be creating a best climbing and rambling selection at the end of June possibly the beginning of July may I make you aware if you’re watching a top 10 video it was filmed in 2021 and has been since replaced by two further reworkings that are now top 20 rankings
Obviously, it’s difficult for me to rank every rose as I grow so many over 200 varieties of david Austin in the garden and over 300 roses in total on my subscription based service on Instagram. I did actually do a top which Emily Brontë scraped in by the skin of her teeth.

@@the_gardenerben thank you Ben. Wow that is some collection. I appreciate your reviews. It helps me narrow down the ones I buy. I just got Emma Bridgewater and really considering Scepter’d Isle. I only have one climber as not yet used to climbing or rambling roses so thank you, I am looking forward to your review.

Most of us prefer the remontant roses though roses like this one and Lady Banks have a special charm.
