  • Welcome to my personal review of rose “ Penelope, lively” -(Ausb18a15) launched in 2023 by David Austin, roses
    It’s now been in the ground for just under a year and produced a whopping four flushes of flowers last season Each larger and more showy than the flush before,
    It has dark, Emerald green foliage, that is tinged with the most beautiful burnt burgundy edges make up the backdrop for the strong, true pink flowers,
    They are born, both singly and in small sprays on graceful arching stems and open from rounded cerise pink buds, they open completely flat and are saucer shaped.and they have the most beautiful crinkled tissue paper, like texture, adding a sense of true romance and fuss to the flower which is incredibly pretty.
    As the bloom ages, it takes on a beautiful silvery grey hue very similar to that of Princess Anne or Gabriel oak as the flower fades
    Comparisons have been made by others of this roses similarities to the princess Alexandra of Kent,Harlow Car, and Princess Anne so in a review first I bring all four roses together in comparison
    Expect to see this rose climb high into my top 20 most recommended David Austin roses in 2024
    it’s exceedingly healthy and when fully established expect it to create a shrub around 3 1/2 feet tall and around 4 feet wide perfect for planting alone as a statement shrub or as an informal hedge
    During Home trials this variety stands up well to being cut and lasts and astonishing 5 to 6 days in a
    The fragrance is Rich warm and fruity with upper notes of citrus and sweet summer fruits the real epitome of summer
    8⭐️ Fragrance

    Ben firstly thank you for your review, always enjoy them, and they have been the result of my garden having a feast for my eyes and nose:) , although i did buy her on release, i did not wait for your review and went and bought a bare root as well :(
    In my defence i would say it was down to how impressed i was of the rose in all aspects of beauty, growth, repeat, health not to mention scent.
    Also your first impressions helped heaps:)

      @the_gardenerben  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ryansealy6755 it’s not gonna be possible this season I’m afraid but I assure you they could not be more different in shape and style. The Princess Alexandra of Kent produces some of the largest balloons in the david Austin collections sometimes over 5 inches in diameter with ripples of salmon and apricot running through the balloons, Penelope lively is very very raspberry and opens completely flat

      Both varieties specifically bring me sunshine are going to get fairly large might bring me sunshine although pruned to a permanent framework of only 18 inches over the winter are now coming up for flowering and standing at least 7 feet tall. You’re going to need a pot at least 70 cm in diameter and 75 cm deep.

    It's very pretty. I watch other TH-cam rose channels, and the other growers have all experienced slow, weak or spindly growth with this rose. I think they all have them potted. Any thoughts on why yours might be doing so much better?

    • @the_gardenerben
      @the_gardenerben  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’m not sure I haven’t heard any bad reports on this particular variety although I don’t understand how people can be already moaning that it’s weak and spindly bearing in mind it’s only been launched for 12 months many people tend to offer their personal opinions and reviews long before I will ever speak my mind regarding variety realistically no rose should ever be judged after being planted for less than three years. It often takes them that long to fully establish and show all of their characteristics, including colour fragrance and bloom size.
      Admittedly my plant is still relatively small only standing around 2 feet tall and around 2 feet wide however during his first flush of flowers it’s already producing five or six Scarlett Ruby red canes from the base will be what takes takes it through into next season

  • @sarahj3876
    @sarahj3876 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Its a beautiful rose, however once established will be much bigger than 4ft. Mine is in a pot and already its over 3.5ft and still growing like mad. I cut it right back over winter to just a few inches and it's growing faster than any of my ground roses (besides lark ascending) Pretty sure it would easily reach 6/7ft in the ground. I'm not mad though 😅
