    Thank you very much, Ben. I completely agree with the reviews you've made. I have the first six along with The Country Parson and other more traditional ones like Lady Emma Hamilton or Jude The Obscure, and I’ve noticed that David Austin is paying attention to warmer climates. I live in inland Spain and we're having an awfully hot summer. The varieties from recent years withstand the sun and heat very well. The only one that suffers a bit more is Penelope Lively, whose flowers get scorched if it's too hot. They are all very healthy, and that's despite being in pots because I only have a patio.
    Best regards.

    • @JoseRodriguez-lu4ce
      @JoseRodriguez-lu4ce 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@iulianverbina6817 Hello. Most of the recent rose bushes perform quite well. However, even though the majority don't get sunburned and produce wonderful roses, some do show deterioration in their blooming, with either very shorter flower life or smaller blooms. The ones that have held up perfectly under the sun without these issues have been: Eustacia Vye, Gabriel Oak, Emily Brontë, and Bring me Sunshine. In fact, these have been the roses that best withstood the heat and scorching sun among the various types I have (not just English roses). The Country Parson handles the heat and sun well, but it fades to white within a couple of days. Silas Marner does well if it doesn't have too many flowers (which rarely happens). Dannahue and Penelope Lively produced sunburned roses. However, this is their first summer with me, so it's possible they will resist better once they're more established.

      @@kellyluk73 what’s the combination of observations made over 12 months and more as the climate changes some roses are performing much better in extreme temperatures dry periods and unexpected wet this is exactly why I don’t ever review a rose I haven’t had in the ground for less than 12 months the roses that move down the ranking are often due to new entries or varieties displaying better long-term characteristics. This is also exactly what they’re trying to do with the david Austin breeding program.

    Since you mentioned Roald Dahl for shade - what would you say is the minimal amount of direct sunlight is necessary for this rose?

    • @howard2031
      @howard2031 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have had my Roald Dahl for 2 months in a place where he gets maybe 3 hours of sun from 10am to 1pm in poor draining clay-ish soil... and he still blooms fairly regularly. I won't say it's spectacular, but it's something at least. He would probably prefer a little bit more sun, but it's still early.

    Hi Ben, I appreciate your recommendations very much even though I grow my roses (DAs, OGRs, hybrid musks and some rare Canadian-bred) in the colder, coastal climate of Nova Scotia, Canada. Could you please give me a little insight into why Emily Bronte doesn't make any of your best-of lists, not even as a sister plant to Eustacia Vye? I know yours are personal reviews so the reason can be that you just prefer different colours. I could do with a smaller, reliable and crucially less "pinky" rose and I am eyeing EB but worry something is not right with her if she doesn't make a cut for you. TIA!

      @the_gardenerben  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@joannastrzelec-stewart8550 hi there and thank you for your question just because the two roses are named after sisters doesn’t mean they necessarily were brought through the breeding program at the same time views on Emily Brontë especially in the UK very greatly in the United States Canada and other parts of the world I believe it’s grown on a different route which means it is incredibly vigourous and almost can be grown as a climber here in the UK. It’s much smaller and less vigourous variety only reaching around 3 to 3 1/2 feet.
      My subscription service on Instagram Emily Brontë does actually rank within my top 50 which may not seem like a great place to most people, but you must remember that I grow over 300 varieties of roses so for one to make the top 20 little on the top 50 it has to be incredibly good it’s incredibly pretty well formed and fragrant, however Eustacia vye is a much better all round option in my opinion

    I'd appreciate some advice. I have a couple of DA roses which I love and have space for 2 more. But they are awkward sites. Both sites face NW. one is against a fence with about 2 hours of sun a day the other is for an archway.. zero direct sun surrounding soil is very dry as there are a lot of conifers... (but I can manually water). Any climbing/rambling roses that would suit please ? (I like strongly scented, insect attractive ones). Your guidance would be much appreciated. I love your videos ! But I always want them all ! I have 5 DA so far and its all your fault (thank you!) 😀 #itsBensfault!
