You know MDB, 9:55 is a great idea for an April fools run. A gen 3 "TACKLE" only run, where you use tackle, recoil tackle, the harder recoil tackle, tackle from above, and any other you want.

Oh by the way, you probably already started it, but there is an option in the Universal Pokemon Randomizer to have trade evolutions evolve by level up! You might want to ask the audience if you should turn that on or what level would be good, but I think it makes sense given the spirit of the run that you could allow the trade evolutions to evolve some different way!

The closest you can get to a Gen 1 Rage only run is to use a Kangaskhan with Scrappy in Gen 4. You'd either have to grind early game so you can use only Rage the rest of the run or give it Rage at the beginning.

Here is an idea for a pokémon playthrough of pokémon red or yellow.
What if you only used continuously attacking moves?
This would mean any move where after using it your pokémon will only use that move until it misses or faints.
    These moves are like rollout.
They prevent you from using items on your pokémon while it is using a move in battle.
These moves are Wrap, Rage, Thrash, Clamp, and Petal Dance.
I think that's all of them.
Everyone knows you most likely won't use rage. But, Mankey learns rage and thrash. In red and yellow Mankey learns Thrash at level 39.

Blaine has a 1/4 chance of using a Super Potion, no matter what is going on. Compare that to Lance, who has a 1/2 chance of using a Hyper Potion *if* his Pokemon is below 20% health.
on each turn, X is a random number between 0 and 255
Lance: If under 1/5 health, use a Hyper Potion if X < 128
Blaine: Use Super Potion if X < 64

Tried it months ago and it's brutal. Lance's Gyarados is *that* much of a brick wall that, using similar strats to Jrose, I had to get to lv 78 because you HAVE to two-shot it with Body Slam or he will either two-shot you back or leave you too weak to beat the other 4 pokemon.
It was bad enough to make me forfeit my attempt at doing the same with Vulpix and Ninetales, because they're so much weaker physically than the fire dogs that Vulpix's more interesting movepool (Confuse Ray + Fire Spin specifically) sometimes isn't enough to make up for the lack of Agility, and Ninetales doesn't get ANY of those moves so it ends up being even worse than its pre-evolution.

I don't know how you feel about changing out parts of the game, but some of the randomizers can tweak to allow level up evolution of trade-only pokemon. I think it still requires you to level them to 45 or so to get them to evolve. Just something that might make your runs a bit easier, maybe make a community poll to see if your viewers would be in favor of it? Regardless, I've not been a longtime viewer, but i enjoy watching your runs. You, Jrose, and Scott started me doing my own runs on emulators.

About that idea for a Rage only run, it is theoretically possible, depending on the Gen you try to do it in. That's because Kangaskhan learns it and also gets Scrappy as an ability, allowing you to use the move against Ghost types.

Great work as always MDB! I know you mentioned that a Psywave run is one of the few you wouldn't be up to doing, and I can only speak for myself, but I think most of us would be totally okay with you using other moves for leveling up, or even using a rare candy instead to save some time. You've always been very conscious of making sure not to level past a reasonable point to progress when you grind, and I believe most everyone would be fine with you using them because of that. But, if you don't feel like it's a run you'd enjoy, don't do it! I'd rather see the MD F'in B whose excited for a run he wants to do rather than an MDB whose doing a run just for the fan requests. Thanks for all you do, your Let's Plays make my commute to giraffe school a relaxing time, and I can't wait for a new gen, 4K Nancy Drew remaster so we can experience that masterpiece all over again! Cheers man!

For the rival's team run, you can trade by opening a multiplayer window in mGBA. It's a godsend, but make sure you make a save state for both games you're using beforehand. It can be kind of screwy sometimes.

This may have already been said, and MDB is already doing the next challenge, but in the future, if necessary, you can use the Universal Pokemon Randomizer to check "Impossible evolutions". This makes trade evolutions simply evolve at a certain level, around the late 30s to early-mid 40s. Good for next Saturday's challenge for example

Fun fact: if you're just yeeting balls at a mon in gen 1, as soon as the ball pattern changes (E.g Moltres wasn't even shaking, but eventually did) you'll catch it. Because as the chance doesn't change, the animation played is always the default for how likely you are to catch it. As a way of the game to say "look, this one has so low of a chance they don't even shake. Do something else."

An idea for a challenge that would have a bit more variety than this and might be more fun yet might be slightly difficult
Pokemon Emerald with only cutting/slashing moves
    Rules:
    - You can only use cutting/slashing moves in battles
    - You can catch Pokemon for all mandatory HMs except Cut
    - No glitches or exploits
    - No items in battle except held items
What would count as cutting moves could be your decision but in my opinion, the moves ( at least for Gen 3 ) would be; Cut, Slash, Drill Peck, Razor Leaf, False Swipe, Fury Cutter, Metal Claw, Crush Claw, Dragon Claw, Poison Tail, Leaf Blade, Air Cutter, and Razor Wind.

You should do a run with only positive priority moves (whatever generation you get a mon with priority move with before the first gym)
Other than extreme speed and technician they aren’t very powerful so it could be interesting also speed not mattering is cool I I think gen six could be interesting because of water shurikan being special which I think is the only one besides vacuum wave prankster for status moves is cool to, so many intricacies it would be very interesting to see
A harder alternative is negative priority moves like revenge and avalanche

Metronome only run: every single Pokémon only knows the move Metronome, which makes for a hilarious run (mine was a Nuzlocke btw); No attacking run: you have to rely on things like Toxic, Confusion and weather; and a SL1 run, try to beat the game with only lv1 Pokémon

The anime actually explains why moves like Horn Attack/Peck/Megahorn work on some types and not others. When the attack is used X-Type Energy is being channeled into the body part. Similar situation with Close Combat/Beat Up/Outrage/Comet Punch and similar Moves.

  • @maromania7

Fun fact- Seaking can learn peck, but Seel and Dewgong can't learn horn attack or horn drill! Despite this, many of thier pokedex entries talk about them using thier horns to break ice and such. They CAN get it as an egg move, but that just means if it's half Seaking of Lapras they can learn it from the non-seal half.

Hey Mah-Dry Bread, not sure if you’ll see this, but I have an idea for rare candies in full party runs. I think using rare candies to catch up newly caught Pokémon up to your highest level Pokémon -10. For example, if you caught a new Pokémon and your ace was level 50, you could level it to 40. I think this would make the run feel more like a team.

For the Rival's Team in Crystal Run, to make trade evolutions work without trading, there is a checkbox function on the universal Pokemon Randomizer which lets you remove trade evolutions and make them work by Level up or something else.
For Kadabra and Haunter, you just need to level them up to 37 or above.

  • @ikepetro6263

I mean, if you really wanted to torture yourself with a rage only run, then you could say only use rage on non ghost type pokemon. After that you can either use struggle (I forget if that counts as normal in gen 1 or not) or just use whatever moves for ghost types.
Great video as always though, I appreciate you making consistent videos for us to watch.
