Two improvements that could have been made: 1. Use the Randomizer to turn Chikorita into Cyndaquil so you both have a Typhlosion at the end. 2. Mark the setting to make impossible evo’s possible by level up so Alakazam and Gengar could have been used
I feel like if you ever did another one of these in the future, you should use the pokemon randomizer to turn on "Change impossible evos". I usually just play with it on because its kinda annoying not being able to get some of the coolest pokemon in the game.
yeah, I hate trade evolutions especially when they carry over into fangames (like pokemon tower defence), mainly because I don't have friends to trade with.
Just to bring more attention to it, I agree with most everyone else that using the Universal Randomizer to gain the trade evolutions and other impossible ones is totally fine by us. I don’t see it as a huge deal, since the point of the challenge is to have certain Pokémon. Not having the final form is would be sad.
Hey, unsure if this was mentioned already but, even though you don’t need the randomizer for runs like this, you can still put your rom into it and enable the setting that allows you to evolve trade evo pokémon by levelling - it’d make you able to get pokemon like alakazam and gengar for this run. i’ve not tried with crystal though so i’m not certain, or if it really matters that you get the team exactly copied. anyways, really enjoyable video as always!
and i realy dont think the rival tradet his kadabra and let the guy evolve it and then got it traded back... so the rival must be using the randomizer too
Hey, Crystal's back! That means animated sprites! Speaking if which, has anyone noticed that they're synched to Pokemon's cries? It's a really cool detail that the 3D model animations are sadly lacking.
For this type of challenge you could set the Universal Pokémon randomiser to make evolution normally obtained by trading possible by level up, so you can have the exact same team by the end. It's both more correct with the definition and more usable to win the run.
Some tipps to keep your recording room at a decent temperature: 1. Close the shutters. If you dont have those, buy them or get thick curtains. Let as little light in during the day as possible. Sunlight seriously heats up the room. 2. Only ventilate during the night or right before dawn, because thats when the air is coolest outside 3. Fill a big bucket or other tub like movable object with cool water and bathe yout feet in there. It helps. 4. Avoid using closed headphones if you dont need them. Your body also ventilates via the ears. Use ear plugs or speakers instead. Aside from that thanks for the Video again. Have a nice day.
If I may add in a cute little comment for the next time you do this type of challenge, I would actually suggest *using* the Universal Pokemon Randomizer to replace the starter weak to your rival into your rival's starter. Why? Well, wouldn't it be more fun if you could literally go head-to-head to prove who uses the exact same team the best? =P
And now all the rivals are friendly and supportive and barf. I wonder if parents complained to Nintendo about Silver's insults and bad attitude hurting their kids' feelings or something. He's toned down a lot in HGSS too.

In my opinion, mean rivals give the lesson that not everyone is happy go lucky, and some people just aren't good. Keeping your cool and defeating them gives a moral boost to those children and teach that rudeness doesn't lead anywhere. Jerk rivals only become powerful trainers when their characters become more friendly. See Silver, who embraces Lance's philosophy and Bede, becoming a Gym Leader through talent alone.

Just cheat. I spent a week trying to get a Munchlax in Platinum before giving up. There's ways to tell which honey trees even have a chance of spawning Munchlax but it requires knowing the invisible PID that your save file gets assigned on creation that you can't see without using like Pokegen or PKHex and at that point you could just use it generate a Munchlax in one of your PC boxes without all the waiting bullcrap.

Here's a slightly silly idea. Level-up moves only, but no STAB moves (including status moves). Gen 2, 3 or 4? I'm still trying to come up with more ideas for runs where you could use legendaries.
Seen a few other suggestions, so here's mine. I play a rom hack version called Perfect Crystal, makes all 251 pokemon available in the game, with trade pokemon evolving with stones instead. Makes the post game a lot harder too (red has all lvl 100s). might be worth a look at, could make for an interesting run one day
Hey MDB, since you already use the Universal Pokemonrandomizer here is a tip for the next time. If u wanna use a Pokemon that would normally require a trade or a trade with an item to evolve you can activate the CHANGE IMPOSSIBLE EVOS on the randomizer. It makes most of the Tradeevos evolve at lvl.45 to my knowledge.

Any Pokemon caught in a Friend Ball can achieve Friendship Evolution within just 10 levels. The universal Randomizer has a feature that makes Trade evolutions evolve by level up and its around the 30s so you can use that for playthroughs that require trade evolutions.
00:40 The Universal Pokemon Randomizer (which you use all the time) has a setting that changes Trade Evolutions into Level-up Evolutions (level 30 or 37, depending on the Pokemon). I'm shocked you're not familiar with that.
I loved this episode! I can tell you really enjoyed making this challenge, and getting to see the level 30-ish haunter destroy the Snorlax was hilarious
20:12 Correct. In Gens 1 and 2, no enemy Pokémon have Stat Experience. (Also, fun fact, their DV's are set in the case of Trainers' Pokémon. It's a single set of values for Gen 1, whereas for Gen 2, each different Trainer class has a specific set of DV's that all of its Pokémon will have.)
I love this type of challenge where it is not about the difficulty, it is about using the restriction creatively. Multi-pokemon, but sorta balanced and a decent moveset breeds creativity. The curse manoeuvre was great. And yeah… Kadabra is just a beast! Alakazam is better, but Kadabra on its own can very much hold the fort. It is a frail, but very fast (105) and with impressive spatk (120)
You should do a run with only priority moves it seems very interesting as speed doesn’t matter as much and the low base power is a cool challenge technician could be very helpful, As for the generation probably go with the newest one you want to, gen six could be interesting since you get access to water shuriken(one of only two special priority moves alongside vacuum wave)
A few requests: Gen 3 with Maxie and Archie’s teams and moves (either one run with six or two runs with three) Gens 3-5 with the Rival’s teams and moves (with 2 separate runs for Cheren and Bianca)
Just a tip on the gameshark code: It "deleted" your items because you probably only used the "Change Slot 1 item into rare candy", so it "used up" the number on slot 1 and proceeded to turn whatever was on 2 into Rare candy. Next time, you should "combo" it with a code to set the item ammount on slot 1 (say, to 99). Hope this helps and great video as always!
You can actually change the time in Gold, Silver, and Crystal pretty easy. It requires some button inputs on the title screen, and Gold/Silver input is different from Crystal, but that could save some time in the future

This was a cool challenge. Silver is my favourite Pokémon character and the first person I faced in a video game since Pokémon Silver was my first video game I ever played at the age of 2 in 2004.
I just checked it’s movesets and don’t you think that would be a little to easy. Magmar is a good strong Pokémon and with moves like flamethrower and confuse ray, I don’t see why it would be challenging.

Brock has low special defense so it won’t be until misty that you run into a problem, and if you have TMs then you get mega punch by then so that will help a lot. And after you get access to psychic then you really aren’t going to run into that many problems, at least as far as a challenge run in concerned. Without TMs you’d need to grind till level about 35 till you could beat Starmie reliably. After that point I don’t see where it would be too big of a challenge.
I know the point of it is to show off another huge problem with gen one being the learn sets Also I mostly just comment this to try and support the channel this challenge is very easy in the late game.
Something you could have also tried with Haunter, not that it mattered for this run lol, was Hypnosis + Nightmare. Not as consistent as using Curse, but it either would have essentially been two Curses attacking your sleeping target, or it’s something you can use a lot more than Curse without knocking out your own Pokémon.
For trade evolutions, I believe in the randomiser you can tick a box to allow impossible evolutions. I believe this changes trade evolutions into evolving at a certain level. I thought this might be useful so you can be even more accurate with full team challenges in future :)
Saying this before I watch: Almost certainly yes. You have a full team of decent Pokemon; People can beat these with 1 Pokemon, so any more than 2 should be a cakewalk by comparison. But using NPC's Pokemon does it spice up a lot. Anyway, excited for this run video! Thanks for uploading! Will probably comment more later!
Not surprised at all you beat Red that early, honestly. The rival's team is very good in Gen 2 except for Sneasel. When the challenge started I immediately thought Crobat would wall out Red's Venusaur, and Haunter would wall the Snorlax.
I feel this just goes to show how important team versatility is. Even with garbage moves the ability to swap out to someone who will deal/take less damage from the opponent pokemone is a godsend, not to mention being able to swap out of stat drops and confusion.
I always wondered why it's not called lightning bolt PS, I think for Blaine's team you must also use a randomizer with a 50% chance to force you to use a super potion
Awesome challenge. By the way, you don't have to wait several real-life hours to change the time of day in Gen 2. All you need to do is go to your mom's house and change the time. That should automatically allow you to switch between day and night, change the spawning Pokemon, and even reset daily events if you change the day. Really good strategy for farming the Tm for Return and potentially Bug Catching Contest items. It wasn't until later generations until they tried to prevent clock manipulation and reduce day/night events, which made the games slightly less interesting and slightly more grindy, benefitting no one.
Feraligatr probably would have been a bit easier, it has Surf and while its special isn't as beefy, it also has rain dance for it AND Magnetons Thunder.
Wow, pretty awesome beating Red at such a low level. For your next Blaine's team run, remember to attempt to use Super Potions on your full-health Pokémon occasionally.
I don't know how others feel about it, but I personally wouldn't mind if you used the randomizer settings that allow for trade evos to be level up evos.

That poor Charizard at the end xD. Took 6 Smokescreens, Curse and palarylisis. Just needed a little bit of confusion on top of that to be the most status afflicted pokemon I have seen.
one trick I picked up, from *rimworld* of all places, is that if you're in a room that's stupid hot and can't fix it you can leave a bowl of ice water in the room and the temperature exchange will make a 1-2 foot pocket of air that's just barely less awful humidity can become a thing after a while but if you're still too hot there's now a large supply of ice-cold water that's within arm's reach
Couple of options for the Rare Candy cheat. You can either buy a ton of cheap items like Antidotes and put them at the top, or you can also use a cheat that locks in how many you have at 99, since there's item quantity modifying cheats too. It doesn't have to eat your inventory.
Why not just gen in a Gengar and Alakazam? I don't think anyone would be mad about that! Just do it when your team reaches around level 40 since the rest of your team would be fully evolved by then

Great video, that Red fight was very impressive, but for Red’s Snorlax, you used Mean Look and then swapped out. However, Mean Look only works if the Pokémon that used it stays in battle. This didn’t end up mattering, but just a tip for future reference.
If you are worried about game shark codes ruining your save file, you could always make a copy of your "Battery" for that cartridge. That way you have a backup if you do break something.
quick question, why don't you use pkhex to manually change kadabra and haunter into their evolutions once they reach a ceirtain level, like 36 for example?
One suggestion since gold is my favorite game and I've played it a billion times. For Crobat train the zubat in Goldenrod on drowzee. Leach life is super effective on them and you rarely faint. Add in some haircuts, as well as steps (which increases friendships) and you'll have Crobat before Morty.
Helpful Suggestion/Video Idea: you can change a setting in the randomizer to make impossible trade evos possible. Because of this you can do a trade evo video (Alakazam, Golem, Gengar, etc.) in the game of your choice. It could be a great way for you to get to use some strong Pokémon you haven’t had access to before.
Fun fact, using a Pokemon in battle only impacts friendship when it's a gym/elite 4 battle which gives +10, and when it faints, which gives -1 to -5 I think. Level ups also increase friendship by a tiny bit, as do using vitamins on them, but the easiest (and boringest) way is to just run around in a straight line where you met them for ages, since every 255 steps I believe all the Pokemon in your party get +1, with an extra +1 for being where you met them. This means that if you hatch some eggs after getting the gift Eevee in this gen, you can evolve it into Espeon or Umbreon pretty early.
If you ever want even more of a challenge, why not try a run with set style instead of shift. That makes it so you don't get to switch for free after knocking out a pokemon. It can make fights more difficult, in case you want to do a run that might be a bit easier. Love the content!
1. I believe you should use the randomizer to remove trade evolution requirements, and just evolve at 37. It would make challenge runs like this one more fun to watch. It really hurts my heart to see things like Haunter and Kadabra unable to be evolved. 2. Could you try a Slugma run? Slugma is a Gen 2 pokemon, so it can be done there, but I believe trying to beat Pokemon Emerald would be much harder due to the large number of water types.
I think it would be really fun if you used the Universal Pokemon Randomizer to actually randomize ALL the pokemon, especially in gen 3 or 4 where you'll have a lot more options floating around. Randomizing pokemon abilities would add extra fun as well. Imagine scoring a Slaking who no longer has Truant.

An idea to try for later using the universal Pokémon Randomizer: There is a choice to make impossible evolutions (Trade) possible for games, at least in the ones I have used. It would instead be tied to a level evolution which, at least in the future, would allow you to have trade evolutions for rival teams. Ah, early gen psychic types. Those were the days. Not really surprised this turned into the Kadabra show. I'm kinda disappointed that Haunter ended up being such deadweight - though not catching it in Sprout Tower right away and waiting until the 8th gym to get it will do that to anything, really. I get the feeling that if you had caught it early, it would've been the star of the team, or at least on par with Kadabra. Also pretty disappointing that Sneasel is just so very bad in this gen, it's such a cool pokemon. Oh, and since others have mentioned it
I knew Red's Snorlax was going to be a cake-walk. You can easily beat it with a lv 16 Ghastly because all you need are Mean Look and Curse and it's guaranteed to die because it doesn't have Rollout or anything like that to hit Ghost-Types (at least not in Gold/Silver.)
I'm very happy about the influx of team challenges. As neat as the solo challenges are, it can get stale when the solution is almost always "ten more levels." Super stoked for Blain's team, but question: If you're being Blain, are you allowed to use potions?
If it hasn't been said yet, for the rare candy cheat: Go buy something like antidotes, which you can easily afford 99 of, and then turn the cheat on. It will only replace the top item of your inventory, so as long as you keep a stack of antidotes at the top, and another just below the newly converted candies, you'll keep your other items safe!
why did you not turn on "Change impossible Evos" in the randomizer to make it possible to evolve trade pokemon by getting to lvl 37? that way you could get the correct team :D

It's also easy to set up project64 to read the save and trade with yourself on stadium 2 to evolve them
Just remember to use retroactive super potions at full HP when you're playing with Blaine's team, otherwise you won't be a real Blaine
And also don't forget to spam Agility against fighting and poison types because it's "super effective"

That's a bit high for some of them. Alakazam and Gengar I understand but Poliwrath and Scizor? 40 and 30 (respectively) makes more sense.

20:12 Correct. In Gens 1 and 2, no enemy Pokémon have Stat Experience. (Also, fun fact, their DV's are set in the case of Trainers' Pokémon. It's a single set of values for Gen 1, whereas for Gen 2, each different Trainer class has a specific set of DV's that all of its Pokémon will have.)
I love this type of challenge where it is not about the difficulty, it is about using the restriction creatively.
Multi-pokemon, but sorta balanced and a decent moveset breeds creativity.

And yeah… Kadabra is just a beast! Alakazam is better, but Kadabra on its own can very much hold the fort. It is a frail, but very fast (105) and with impressive spatk (120)
You should do a run with only priority moves it seems very interesting as speed doesn’t matter as much and the low base power is a cool challenge technician could be very helpful, As for the generation probably go with the newest one you want to, gen six could be interesting since you get access to water shuriken(one of only two special priority moves alongside vacuum wave)

When you use a “item cheat” aka rare candy use a “number of items” cheat so you don’t burn through your items
A few requests:
Gen 3 with Maxie and Archie’s teams and moves (either one run with six or two runs with three)
Gens 3-5 with the Rival’s teams and moves (with 2 separate runs for Cheren and Bianca)
I believe one run with 4(Mighyena and Crobat are same for both of them so to prevent dupes).

Just a tip on the gameshark code: It "deleted" your items because you probably only used the "Change Slot 1 item into rare candy", so it "used up" the number on slot 1 and proceeded to turn whatever was on 2 into Rare candy. Next time, you should "combo" it with a code to set the item ammount on slot 1 (say, to 99). Hope this helps and great video as always!
You can actually change the time in Gold, Silver, and Crystal pretty easy. It requires some button inputs on the title screen, and Gold/Silver input is different from Crystal, but that could save some time in the future
Hell if he's using an emulator, be can just mess with the system clock
@@Estarile I mean that is true, but he wants to do it as legit as possible and changing the time is a hidden feature built in to the game the developers forgot to take out while testing
This was a cool challenge. Silver is my favourite Pokémon character and the first person I faced in a video game since Pokémon Silver was my first video game I ever played at the age of 2 in 2004.
I suggest a Red/Blue run with only Magmar. If you look at its move list you’ll understand why.
If you want throw in no Tms for added challenge.
I just checked it’s movesets and don’t you think that would be a little to easy. Magmar is a good strong Pokémon and with moves like flamethrower and confuse ray, I don’t see why it would be challenging.
In gen 1 it’s only move until level 36 is ember.
@@jackmahoney3783 But thats not so bad even if he chooses to not use TMs. He will already have a better move by the time he is at the 4th or 5th gym.
@@jackmahoney3783 that’s not that bad. Brock has low special defense so it won’t be until misty that you run into a problem, and if you have TMs then you get mega punch by then so that will help a lot. And after you get access to psychic then you really aren’t going to run into that many problems, at least as far as a challenge run in concerned. Without TMs you’d need to grind till level about 35 till you could beat Starmie reliably. After that point I don’t see where it would be too big of a challenge.
I know the point of it is to show off another huge problem with gen one being the learn sets
Also I mostly just comment this to try and support the channel this challenge is very easy in the late game.
Something you could have also tried with Haunter, not that it mattered for this run lol, was Hypnosis + Nightmare. Not as consistent as using Curse, but it either would have essentially been two Curses attacking your sleeping target, or it’s something you can use a lot more than Curse without knocking out your own Pokémon.
For trade evolutions, I believe in the randomiser you can tick a box to allow impossible evolutions. I believe this changes trade evolutions into evolving at a certain level. I thought this might be useful so you can be even more accurate with full team challenges in future :)
Saying this before I watch: Almost certainly yes. You have a full team of decent Pokemon; People can beat these with 1 Pokemon, so any more than 2 should be a cakewalk by comparison. But using NPC's Pokemon does it spice up a lot. Anyway, excited for this run video! Thanks for uploading! Will probably comment more later!
Not surprised at all you beat Red that early, honestly. The rival's team is very good in Gen 2 except for Sneasel.
When the challenge started I immediately thought Crobat would wall out Red's Venusaur, and Haunter would wall the Snorlax.
Pokemon platinum rival run would be fun...if nigh impossible
I feel this just goes to show how important team versatility is. Even with garbage moves the ability to swap out to someone who will deal/take less damage from the opponent pokemone is a godsend, not to mention being able to swap out of stat drops and confusion.

PS, I think for Blaine's team you must also use a randomizer with a 50% chance to force you to use a super potion
Awesome challenge. By the way, you don't have to wait several real-life hours to change the time of day in Gen 2. All you need to do is go to your mom's house and change the time. That should automatically allow you to switch between day and night, change the spawning Pokemon, and even reset daily events if you change the day. Really good strategy for farming the Tm for Return and potentially Bug Catching Contest items. It wasn't until later generations until they tried to prevent clock manipulation and reduce day/night events, which made the games slightly less interesting and slightly more grindy, benefitting no one.
Feraligatr probably would have been a bit easier, it has Surf and while its special isn't as beefy, it also has rain dance for it AND Magnetons Thunder.
Wow, pretty awesome beating Red at such a low level. For your next Blaine's team run, remember to attempt to use Super Potions on your full-health Pokémon occasionally.
I don't know how others feel about it, but I personally wouldn't mind if you used the randomizer settings that allow for trade evos to be level up evos.
I like the choice to not nickname the Pokemon. What they are called is the name their creators give them, & what they are; I like liking Pokemon for their natural self, without a need to ascribe some external idea onto them.

That poor Charizard at the end xD. Took 6 Smokescreens, Curse and palarylisis. Just needed a little bit of confusion on top of that to be the most status afflicted pokemon I have seen.

one trick I picked up, from *rimworld* of all places, is that if you're in a room that's stupid hot and can't fix it you can leave a bowl of ice water in the room and the temperature exchange will make a 1-2 foot pocket of air that's just barely less awful
humidity can become a thing after a while but if you're still too hot there's now a large supply of ice-cold water that's within arm's reach

Couple of options for the Rare Candy cheat. You can either buy a ton of cheap items like Antidotes and put them at the top, or you can also use a cheat that locks in how many you have at 99, since there's item quantity modifying cheats too. It doesn't have to eat your inventory.
I'm impressed by how well this team did.

Great video, that Red fight was very impressive, but for Red’s Snorlax, you used Mean Look and then swapped out. However, Mean Look only works if the Pokémon that used it stays in battle. This didn’t end up mattering, but just a tip for future reference.
If you are worried about game shark codes ruining your save file, you could always make a copy of your "Battery" for that cartridge. That way you have a backup if you do break something.
quick question, why don't you use pkhex to manually change kadabra and haunter into their evolutions once they reach a ceirtain level, like 36 for example?

One suggestion since gold is my favorite game and I've played it a billion times. For Crobat train the zubat in Goldenrod on drowzee. Leach life is super effective on them and you rarely faint. Add in some haircuts, as well as steps (which increases friendships) and you'll have Crobat before Morty.
Helpful Suggestion/Video Idea: you can change a setting in the randomizer to make impossible trade evos possible. Because of this you can do a trade evo video (Alakazam, Golem, Gengar, etc.) in the game of your choice. It could be a great way for you to get to use some strong Pokémon you haven’t had access to before.
Fun fact, using a Pokemon in battle only impacts friendship when it's a gym/elite 4 battle which gives +10, and when it faints, which gives -1 to -5 I think. Level ups also increase friendship by a tiny bit, as do using vitamins on them, but the easiest (and boringest) way is to just run around in a straight line where you met them for ages, since every 255 steps I believe all the Pokemon in your party get +1, with an extra +1 for being where you met them. This means that if you hatch some eggs after getting the gift Eevee in this gen, you can evolve it into Espeon or Umbreon pretty early.

If you ever want even more of a challenge, why not try a run with set style instead of shift. That makes it so you don't get to switch for free after knocking out a pokemon. It can make fights more difficult, in case you want to do a run that might be a bit easier. Love the content!
1. I believe you should use the randomizer to remove trade evolution requirements, and just evolve at 37. It would make challenge runs like this one more fun to watch. It really hurts my heart to see things like Haunter and Kadabra unable to be evolved.
2. Could you try a Slugma run? Slugma is a Gen 2 pokemon, so it can be done there, but I believe trying to beat Pokemon Emerald would be much harder due to the large number of water types.
Would love to see a challenge run in a game from Gen 6-8 for some new variety
I know that you play with no items in battle, but I think you could allow a few Super Potions next run to be accurate to how Blaine operates.
I think it would be really fun if you used the Universal Pokemon Randomizer to actually randomize ALL the pokemon, especially in gen 3 or 4 where you'll have a lot more options floating around. Randomizing pokemon abilities would add extra fun as well. Imagine scoring a Slaking who no longer has Truant.

An idea to try for later using the universal Pokémon Randomizer: There is a choice to make impossible evolutions (Trade) possible for games, at least in the ones I have used. It would instead be tied to a level evolution which, at least in the future, would allow you to have trade evolutions for rival teams.

Ah, early gen psychic types. Those were the days. Not really surprised this turned into the Kadabra show. I'm kinda disappointed that Haunter ended up being such deadweight - though not catching it in Sprout Tower right away and waiting until the 8th gym to get it will do that to anything, really. I get the feeling that if you had caught it early, it would've been the star of the team, or at least on par with Kadabra. Also pretty disappointing that Sneasel is just so very bad in this gen, it's such a cool pokemon. Oh, and since others have mentioned it

I knew Red's Snorlax was going to be a cake-walk. You can easily beat it with a lv 16 Ghastly because all you need are Mean Look and Curse and it's guaranteed to die because it doesn't have Rollout or anything like that to hit Ghost-Types (at least not in Gold/Silver.)

I'm very happy about the influx of team challenges. As neat as the solo challenges are, it can get stale when the solution is almost always "ten more levels." Super stoked for Blain's team, but question: If you're being Blain, are you allowed to use potions?
If it hasn't been said yet, for the rare candy cheat:
Go buy something like antidotes, which you can easily afford 99 of, and then turn the cheat on. It will only replace the top item of your inventory, so as long as you keep a stack of antidotes at the top, and another just below the newly converted candies, you'll keep your other items safe!
why did you not turn on "Change impossible Evos" in the randomizer to make it possible to evolve trade pokemon by getting to lvl 37? that way you could get the correct team :D
