Talking about mental health is definitely not a distraction. Our hobbies, our work, our mental health...they're all integrated. Keep doing what you're doing, you've been so helpful with me and my Bronco. Just make sure you always take time for yourself. Even TH-cam and social media is work. Your drone and trail side videos take time and effort to set up, shoot, and then edit for publication. Most importantly, stay open and keep talking with your friends and family; your support network will help bring you back to center when life starts pulling you off stable ground.

You’re absolutely right, they are definitely all connected and it’s important to find the right balance between all of them which is going to be different for everyone. But I don’t want to talk about it a ton, because if my videos are to be an escape, then I also don’t want to remind people of their struggles. So that’s a balance I need to figure out as well. I’m so glad you’ve found value in my content though and that it’s been able to help with your bronco build! Thank you so much for the comment, I’ll definitely keep that in mind

If you haven't already, turn your channel into an LLC. That way you can write off nearly everything related to your channel. The Bronco itself, tires, accessories, fuel, trip food, office supplies, ect. It all adds up to a lot at the end of the year.
    Hope this helps!

My wife just received her custom built four door bronco. She pulled the trigger on this new financial endeavor in part because of your videos with your wife, kids and pets. She wants to do the same. So thank you for being here, doing the best you can, and hanging out with other TH-cam creators who share that struggle and drive.
    God bless brother❤

This is not a distraction, and should not be in an apology. You should hold your head high and be proud of what you’re doing. More people, like you, need to share their stories, and need to be proud of what they’re doing for themselves, their lives, and their mental health. Don’t apologize for who you are, where you are, and what you’ve been through. I, personally, watch some of these stories, and I seek help through your shared experiences and inspiration. Keep posting.

This is powerful. My son is currently overseas, and is having massive difficulty. I am going to refer him to your channel. It takes a lot of courage to open up like this. I hope you continue down this road and keep chasing your dreams. That's one thing I have always told my son... No matter what. No matter who. Always, ALWAYS - Chase your dreams. Similar story here, only 30 years ago. Fresh out of the military, and not a clue where my life should go next! I absolutely did the wrong thing by just trying to "power through". I have sense made some good choices and ended up getting married to an absolute angel of a woman who helped me in so many ways. I admire the choices you have made, and I am looking forward to following you on your journey! And thank you for your service!

David I recently found out about your channel, I live in the pnw as well and I feel very inspired by your trips and loveeee the content, I hope to be able to get out more this summer even on 1 night trips, I honestly really hope you blow up and make a living out of something you love to do, because that’s something that I would wanna do in my life, I’m hoping one day that I can get out of my job and just be out there exploring the beautiful states of Washington and Oregon and eventually America, keep pushing, keep being consistent, and people like us will stick around, and next thing you know you’ll be making a video titled “thank you for 1 million subscribers”💪💪

I'm active Navy for 9 years now and just found your channel. Saw this video mentioned through another comment and had to check it out. I'm glad I did because mentally I'm struggling pretty bad. From hard pushing chain of commands that just don't care to the excessive workload that doesn't end. Was an avid speed guy so been through a ton of sport cars but decided that hobby honestly isn't in the best of my interest after years. So, I traded in my type R for a Ranger and decided to start getting back into going into the outdoors again. Some of the best times I've ever had were going on roads trips with my best friend and stopping to see the random places along the way. I'm rambling but your videos that I've gone through so far have helped quite a bit and I just want to say thank you for sharing your experience openly man. Makes me feel less alone. Hope to see you out there one day. I appreciate what you're doing and look forward to more videos.

I’m sorry to hear you’re struggle man. Someone command has such an impact on their military career and I don’t think a lot of people understand that. My first command was so bad I actively tried to get kicked out. Not proud of that but it’s true. My second command was INCREDIBLE though and I’m so glad I stuck around for that. But I hope you’re able to find some clarity and relief in getting back out in nature. And don’t be afraid to seek out counseling. It helped me a lot

Wow, we have a pretty parallel story. I was fully prepared for a full military career, but after a few years in I got really injured multiple times, and after another 1.5 years of many surgeries, failed physical therapy, and everything else, they finally told me I was too broken to fix, gave me a check, and said "beat it kid." I didn't want to be around people, or in cities. So I went back to NM and got into a small mountain town college, and back into nature. I was only 50% disabled for physical, but the VA tried so hard to get me to go the 100% for ptsd. I wouldn't do it though. Over the years, being in nature is what ultimately fixed me (mentally, the physical stuff is still broken, lol). I'm not an overlander. I'm just a photographer with a Subaru who can't afford a real rig, lol, so I use what I have, but it's mine and it gets me most of where I need to go. I love your channel and have watched for a while now. It's very calming and inspiring to watch your adventures. I will also say that I did the same thing as you. After I finished school and got my degrees like everyone told me to I went got real jobs, one was for DoD doing what I did in the navy but with way better pay; however it was even more stressful, no advancement, and very bad for my mental health, so I quit and went back to being a scientist in the private sector. Did that for a while until photography started paying more than the science. So I quit and went full time photography and TH-cam. It took a few years before TH-cam was big enough to pay the bills, but that's where I'm at now, so if you ever want someone to talk to about the whole thing, I'm always down. You can email, text, or call me anytime if you want to chat about the military stuff, life, art, TH-cam, or whatever. brent@hallofthewildstudios.com is my email.

    • @OFFTHEGRIND
      @OFFTHEGRIND  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Dude I am so sorry to hear that they broke you. Not fun at all. I have some physical limitations from my time in as well and it is not fun at all. But the mental side of things is real shitty. I get the thing about not wanting to be rated for PTSD. I was honestly really concerned about that as well, that is may interfere with my ability to do things that I want to do in life, in my career, stuff like that. I have not found that to be the case personally, and I am glad that the VA knows about it because there is such a focus on vets mental health, they do everything they can. They have been awesome. But dude, all that matters is that you get out. The vehicle doesn't matter. I LOVE my bronco and am fortunate enough to have it, but it is not necessary. I really want to find a way to make this channel less about the Bronco, and more about the adventure because at the end of the day, that is all that matters. Thanks for the comment man, I will definitely reach out and chat. Thanks

I get what you mean about the video being a "distraction" from the channels typical content, but it was worth making.
First off, thank you for your service.
Secondly, youre the MAN! Currently My and I am sure many others favorite outdoor/overlanding channel. Videos like this is why! Raw and unfiltered, tell it as it is. I haven't missed an upload in a very long time and when you do collaborations with other brands you do very well at staying on course with your brand. As someone who left a job that was toxic to those I loved and caused depression in myself, I identify with what you’re dealing with. However, making a living on TH-cam, may mean having to take less ethical sponsorships and it makes you more prone to having depression again. I’ve revamped TH-cam for myself and absolutely love life right now. I think you should consider this. I don’t and will not rely on TH-cam for income anymore… it’s freeing. My main job will now provide 100% of the financial support to make off-road adventure videos. Most jobs have time off (mine didn’t till this year). The benefit of a job allows me to be more connected to my audience (who also works real jobs) while making awesome videos simply for fun. I’m so excited about filming with this mindset. Oh that last video didn’t perform despite editing it for weeks, now it’s no big deal. I’m not saying you can’t be a TH-camr like Trail Recon or the Story till Now, but as someone who has had depression, full time YouTubing will likely bring it back. Find a job that you love, then make videos on the side… it’s realistic and makes TH-cam so much fun again. Whatever you do, good luck!

It was great meeting you in Florida and hope we can go camping sometime. This video will help others. Many of us struggle with mental health to some degree. Me included. The last 4 years haven't been easy on any of us. So many people turn to youtube and videos like yours for a needed mental break, and to find inspiration. I agree there is no better therapy than being outside. Keep doing what you do. You are a genuine person. You make great films.

Jesus, I can 100% relate to you. After the long, awkward, and painfully slow adjustment to civilian life (I've been out for three years), I recently started my second career. I ordered my Everglades Bronco last month and have been watching your channel since then. Losing your identity is hard, losing it and being surrounded by people who have no idea and don't even operate the same way is way harder. Keep on trucking, homie, and thank you.

Just got into Overland out here in the PNW and a friend referred me to your channel. Being a retired combat vet myself, I can relate. 2002 was a rough year for me being deployed to Afghanistan, still lingers in my mind from time to time. Civilians can never relate and your military friends have heard the stories a million times, so chatting with someone who is a professional was helpful. I also, just had a friend of a friend (Marine) commit suicide last week, I seriously just ran into him two weeks ago at our local watering hole and I just found out this week. Just remember you are never alone in this struggle. Keep doing what you are doing!! Hang in there brother.

I was not a ground troop, AWACS "Chair Force" guy, but that few weeks in March were crazy, aircraft stacked in thousand foot increments waiting to employ ordinance while the calls for CAS went on and on. Those calls are still embedded in my memory, 17 hour sorties every other day, Rip Its in the morning and Ambien for dinner. Got to meet some of the AC-130s guys years later, what stories they had. But, anyhow, yeah never really in a bad spot, but always ticked off for a while, way better now.

    David,
This video is not a distraction, it is your voice affirming its purpose.
Your struggle forced you diving for cover from confusion and frustration. The cognitive dissonance that brought you to your knees culminated into the very grind your productions attempt to escape.
Happiness is obvious when you are behind the wheel trekking through amazing places, environments conjuring a sense of peace and belonging. You can love your truck, you can love camping, yet their combination conveys a wonder you strive to amplify.
Nearly 35,000 individuals subscribe to this channel for various reasons, but they all have a singular component in common: You. Thanks for sharing all the good stuff, and more importantly thank you for sharing your crisis.
Our influence on others cannot be properly measured. Beyond the Ford fans or overlanding enthusiasts, true connection to your audience comes from the bravery it takes to confess humanity. Videos like this are powerful and I hope it is not the last of its kind you release.
Overlanding may have saved you, but do not neglect to acknowledge your own daring could be another’s rescue.

I love that I can do that for people.

Don't avoid talking about this to those who find your TH-cam channel. You talking about mental health helps yourself and others that have the same struggles. It takes a strong person to admit they need help and to be open and share with others. Talking above it is not a distraction. Your talkkng about this is may save others. Often so many haven't been able to take that 1st step to help themselves yet. You may help them take that 1st step. Keep being you! Love the videos i have seen with you and Venture2Roam and RevereOverland. Keep rolling together. I'm a Jeeper so doing the Jeep wave but also praying you find that peace and continue following your dreams. When I am post Kidney/Pancreas transplant, I hope I cross your paths out there. I wil be hitting the road for a Very Longterm Overland trip across the beautiful country. I went thru a long mental health battle. I made it to the other side. Nothing gives me more peace since my purchasing my JLUR and getting off the concrete and out into nature. Currently awaiting a transplant call so I'm in downtime mode now but myself and my rig are ready for both our mods and then some day soon hope to see you guys out there. Keep following your dreams. You made the choice many should and won't take the risk of walking away from that check. Your life is more valuable! Your peace and happiness is more important. We only get one Life! I just wanted to write you a note real quick. I hope you read this. Being able to openly talk about our emotional and mental issues is a clear sign of major progress on coming back. It is hard work at becoming a better son, brother, husband, and most importantly, father. Everything you have done has influenced you to become the person you are. Both good and not so good experiences. Be grateful for all of it. You are a remarkable young man. You recognized what was important (your family), and you struggled through for them and became a better husband and father. Be proud of that. All of this I know is true because I've been through similar experiences. I have 1 daughter, 6 sons, and an awesome partner and wife of 33 years. If you have a great partner, you can conquer and overcome anything. Thank you for your channel. I came for the Bronco content. This video was not a distraction. I have not yet had the opportunity to go overlanding, but I hope to go someday (work, dogs with separation anxiety, old age, etc..) In the meantime, I spend lots of evenings watching overlanding channels instead of television. In a sense, when you share interests with people, even through social media, it is like we are all friends in a sense. That is one of the amazing things technology has brought us. It is never a distraction to talk about challenges you have faced or to be honest with friends. Thank your or your service and thank you for all of your videos. I first found your channel back when my wife was considering getting a Bronco. We did not know a lot about off-roading. That first video I watched on what your bought a Badlands helped us decide we needed a Badlands instead of a Wildtrack. We both ended up getting Rubicon's; however, I still regularly watch your content. It is well done and very helpful. I have watched your trip to Idaho with @Venture2Roam and @RevereOverland several times. Just something about the cool winter scenery. I found myself playing it a lot in the background on mute while doing research or playing Starfield this winter. Good luck with the channel. Always do what is best for you and your family. I am sure all of us fans of the channel would agree.

I agree with you. We all have a common interest and it just feels like we’re all buddies. If you’ve ever been to an overland expo it feels the same. You’re there with thousands of instant friends. I get the position you’re in though as far as not being able to get out. It’s rough when that’s the case. When that was my situation, I would go out early for coffee in the woods, drive somewhere to catch the sunset or just explore for a couple hours. Literally just half day trips but that was enough to get a little recharged. So work with what you got available and I bet you will likely figure out ways to stretch that time out

Amen brother. I have a feeling overlanding can be the answer for a lot people, especially prior military. With your experience in both, maybe you should start offering to lead low cost overlanding adventures for ex-military? I came across your videos when I was looking to buy a Bronco last year and have since been inspired by your trips. I hope to get OTG and out on my first OL trip soon, going out with someone experienced (even at a cost) would probably help get more people started. Good luck and God Bless.

I agree. There’s definitely studies to support that as well. But yeah I think that would be cool to do for vets and active military as well. Good idea. I hope you’re able to get out soon my man!

Good video man. Happy you’re finding some peace in your adventures. My personal opinion is don’t worry too much about the product endorsement side of things. If you truly are giving your best opinion of a product that you either recommend or are giving pros and cons of you are helping people streamline the process of getting out on the trail.

Keep it up bro. Don't quit. Your channel is great and I don't think folks are gonna abandon your channel. Product placement and sponsors are a necessary part of what you are trying to do, so don't sweat it too much. I was Active Army for 15 years (19k30) and I miss it a lot for the most part. I have struggled to adapt to the "civilian" world. It is not the same as where we come from. Most people struggle to get people like us. I think that is why I do the offroad and fast car stuff with the Broncos and Mustangs. It is a release from the normalcy of civilian life.

@@OFFTHEGRIND I am as well currently working through things, and getting my Bronco and working on the build has helped a lot. You were the first Bronco overlander I came across who resides in the PNW, like me. You're an idol man. Thank you.

Man, what a powerful video. It took a seriously big set to put this out there, and I deeply and sincerely appreciate you being this open and upfront with things. And this story is not a distraction. My interest in your channel just went up 10x, and took me from "Oh look, another Overland Channel" to "wow, this just got interesting...". I'm hoping to launch a TH-cam channel this year that is dealing with very similar issues (thought I'm not a Vet..). And in my case I see the personal challenges being as much of the story as anything else. As far as that dang "money thing".... Yes, we all need to make some money. You don't need to apologize for that. I just checked on Patreon and it didn't seem like you had a channel there. I think that is working well for a lot of people. And if I were in your shoes I wouldn't be totally adverse to you having sponsored content. It's all about how you do it. On most of the channels I watch I end up with their sponsored link for another VPN or "Better Help" or "Athletic Greens". Those all seem inauthentic to me. If you only embrace products or companies that you truly believe in that means so much more. No matter what, I'm a big fan of your channel now. Keep the rubber bits on the ground and keep exploring!

Id like to say a couple things. First thank you for ur service and sacrifices. Secondly im glad you have found a way to actually live and love what you do and i hope that it can continue for you. I love the channel and how you present the adventures you go on and the guys you colab with while doing it. Dont get discouraged by lil things ppl complain about. Rob was going over some things ppl comment about on his live lastnite and its truly unbelieveable. If u have to have adds on ur channel right now then so what. I can sit through a few seconds of an add without getting completely sidetracked. I feel like we r in an age where its cool to just complain about any and everything and its crazy to me. Keep your head high, stay consistant, and you will reach your goals and make this into the salary you had before and then some and u will do it all while not knowing its being done bcuz u truly seem to love this. You, Revere Overland, and Venture 2 Roam each inspire me to get out and start overlanding. I have a life threatening disease that i live with everyday but if i didnt tell you that most ppl would never know. Just like i wouldnt have known your hardships without this video, we know how to push through walls and live a beautiful life in the face of adversity. Thanks again for sharing this bro and stay focused and it will pay off!

Would definitely like to know more about your military service. Im a veteran as well, and i know all about how things can take a turn. Also, it might be cool to organize a meet-up to do a trail and overnight or weekend camp trip. I'm finally getting my 4runner lifted next week, and I'm itching to get into the mtns. May have to wait for Snows to melt a bit, but spring is near.

I need to look harder at doing meetups. I have in the past, mostly for patrons, but it’d be fun to meet up with anyone who is available.

One more thing - for the YOU in YOU.
Your out focused on the trail, conditions, and the shots. Your working...
One of my favorite vids on TH-cam - Tacoma Beast.
He rolled up on the Beast
quickly set up shop. Night fell fast as he prepped his firewood. Sparked danced from the fire. He prepped his meal over the fire. Temps dropped. He turned in for the night.
My point here is. He NEVER spoke a word. He was blessed with a space in time. It was his.
Many of us that go out know the silence, the crackle of the fire in our heart and mind.
Thats where we are OFF THE GRIND.
Do not overlook your blessing of time and space - working in a creation none of us will ever completely see.
Enjoy our backyards to the fullest.
