Talking about mental health is definitely not a distraction. Our hobbies, our work, our mental health...they're all integrated. Keep doing what you're doing, you've been so helpful with me and my Bronco. Just make sure you always take time for yourself. Even TH-cam and social media is work. Your drone and trail side videos take time and effort to set up, shoot, and then edit for publication. Most importantly, stay open and keep talking with your friends and family; your support network will help bring you back to center when life starts pulling you off stable ground.

You’re absolutely right, they are definitely all connected and it’s important to find the right balance between all of them which is going to be different for everyone. But I don’t want to talk about it a ton, because if my videos are to be an escape, then I also don’t want to remind people of their struggles. So that’s a balance I need to figure out as well. I’m so glad you’ve found value in my content though and that it’s been able to help with your bronco build! Thank you so much for the comment, I’ll definitely keep that in mind

Funny or not today I stumbled across your post on mental health . While I have been successful in my career it’s come at cost . Thanks man , your story met me where I needed it . Unless you have been to the abyss it’s hard to understand the darkness

This is not a distraction, and should not be in an apology. You should hold your head high and be proud of what you’re doing. More people, like you, need to share their stories, and need to be proud of what they’re doing for themselves, their lives, and their mental health. Don’t apologize for who you are, where you are, and what you’ve been through. I, personally, watch some of these stories, and I seek help through your shared experiences and inspiration. Keep posting.

My wife just received her custom built four door bronco. She pulled the trigger on this new financial endeavor in part because of your videos with your wife, kids and pets. She wants to do the same. So thank you for being here, doing the best you can, and hanging out with other TH-cam creators who share that struggle and drive.

I think most of us get how the business works, and those who don't are well... I dunno. I don't know what to think of them. But do what you gotta do to do what you are enjoying doing =) I'm more than happy to see product stuff, because honestly, I use you all to test products for me to see if I might want to use it or not!
Anyway, I definitely get how the business works. I'm sure others do too. It helps let you make these videos and see where you go. I'm ok with watching product stuff, especially if it's product stuff you enjoy using, if it means you get to make more videos and I get to see them =)

Wow, we have a pretty parallel story. I was fully prepared for a full military career, but after a few years in I got really injured multiple times, and after another 1.5 years of many surgeries, failed physical therapy, and everything else, they finally told me I was too broken to fix, gave me a check, and said "beat it kid." I didn't want to be around people, or in cities. So I went back to NM and got into a small mountain town college, and back into nature. I was only 50% disabled for physical, but the VA tried so hard to get me to go the 100% for ptsd. I wouldn't do it though. Over the years, being in nature is what ultimately fixed me (mentally, the physical stuff is still broken, lol). I'm not an overlander. I'm just a photographer with a Subaru who can't afford a real rig, lol, so I use what I have, but it's mine and it gets me most of where I need to go. I love your channel and have watched for a while now. It's very calming and inspiring to watch your adventures. I will also say that I did the same thing as you. After I finished school and got my degrees like everyone told me to I went got real jobs, one was for DoD doing what I did in the navy but with way better pay; however it was even more stressful, no advancement, and very bad for my mental health, so I quit and went back to being a scientist in the private sector. Did that for a while until photography started paying more than the science. So I quit and went full time photography and TH-cam. It took a few years before TH-cam was big enough to pay the bills, but that's where I'm at now, so if you ever want someone to talk to about the whole thing, I'm always down. You can email, text, or call me anytime if you want to chat about the military stuff, life, art, TH-cam, or whatever. brent@hallofthewildstudios.com is my email.

    • @OFFTHEGRIND
      @OFFTHEGRIND  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Dude I am so sorry to hear that they broke you. Not fun at all. I have some physical limitations from my time in as well and it is not fun at all. But the mental side of things is real shitty. I get the thing about not wanting to be rated for PTSD. I was honestly really concerned about that as well, that is may interfere with my ability to do things that I want to do in life, in my career, stuff like that. I have not found that to be the case personally, and I am glad that the VA knows about it because there is such a focus on vets mental health, they do everything they can. They have been awesome. But dude, all that matters is that you get out. The vehicle doesn't matter. I LOVE my bronco and am fortunate enough to have it, but it is not necessary. I really want to find a way to make this channel less about the Bronco, and more about the adventure because at the end of the day, that is all that matters. Thanks for the comment man, I will definitely reach out and chat. Thanks

I just want to let you know that you inspired me to find something new in my life which is camping, I just ordered a Bronco Outerbanks 4 door because I so much love yours so thank you for your inspiration. I'm newly retired in my late sixties divorced and talking about mental health is not easy so I thank you on that as well, looking forward to the Ikamper 3.0 which I also thank you for suggesting it in your video. I'm new to camping adventures like this and your videos gives me the strength and inspiration to do this new hobby because it's good for the soul body and mind. Please find the time for yourself and stay healthy, lots of people support you and I'm proud to be one of them. Cheers.

If you haven't already, turn your channel into an LLC. That way you can write off nearly everything related to your channel. The Bronco itself, tires, accessories, fuel, trip food, office supplies, ect. It all adds up to a lot at the end of the year.
    Hope this helps!

As someone new to your channel I really appreciated this post. I have personally dealt with the mental health issues similar to what you have, as have all of my kids, two of them suffering from PTSD from trauma they dealt with in high school. Growing up I was told that real men don't cry and to power through the trials, don't rely on other people, how wrong that is. I grew up in the PNW but am stuck for the time being in the Midwest, your videos, and others from the PNW, are what keeps me grounded and relaxed. I miss the PNW and realize how much I took it for granted when I lived there. Thank you for opening up, thank you for sharing your explorations, thank you for showing that it is ok for a man to expose his struggles and that it is ok to get help.

I'm active Navy for 9 years now and just found your channel. Saw this video mentioned through another comment and had to check it out. I'm glad I did because mentally I'm struggling pretty bad. From hard pushing chain of commands that just don't care to the excessive workload that doesn't end. Was an avid speed guy so been through a ton of sport cars but decided that hobby honestly isn't in the best of my interest after years. So, I traded in my type R for a Ranger and decided to start getting back into going into the outdoors again. Some of the best times I've ever had were going on roads trips with my best friend and stopping to see the random places along the way. I'm rambling but your videos that I've gone through so far have helped quite a bit and I just want to say thank you for sharing your experience openly man. Makes me feel less alone. Hope to see you out there one day. I appreciate what you're doing and look forward to more videos.

I’m sorry to hear you’re struggle man. Someone command has such an impact on their military career and I don’t think a lot of people understand that. My first command was so bad I actively tried to get kicked out. Not proud of that but it’s true. My second command was INCREDIBLE though and I’m so glad I stuck around for that. But I hope you’re able to find some clarity and relief in getting back out in nature. And don’t be afraid to seek out counseling. It helped me a lot

Don't avoid talking about this to those who find your TH-cam channel. You talking about mental health helps yourself and others that have the same struggles. It takes a strong person to admit they need help and to be open and share with others. Talking above it is not a distraction. Your talkkng about this is may save others. Often so many haven't been able to take that 1st step to help themselves yet. You may help them take that 1st step. Keep being you! Love the videos i have seen with you and Venture2Roam and RevereOverland. Keep rolling together. I'm a Jeeper so doing the Jeep wave but also praying you find that peace and continue following your dreams. When I am post Kidney/Pancreas transplant, I hope I cross your paths out there. I wil be hitting the road for a Very Longterm Overland trip across the beautiful country. I went thru a long mental health battle. I made it to the other side. Nothing gives me more peace since my purchasing my JLUR and getting off the concrete and out into nature. Currently awaiting a transplant call so I'm in downtime mode now but myself and my rig are ready for both our mods and then some day soon hope to see you guys out there. Keep following your dreams. You made the choice many should and won't take the risk of walking away from that check. Your life is more valuable! Your peace and happiness is more important. We only get one Life! Praying for you! ❤🙏✌️

If you even keep one person from going too far down that dark road before seeking help you have changed the world for the better. When I retired I had that same feeling of pointless wondering. As someone who left a job that was toxic to those I loved and caused depression in myself, I identify with what you’re dealing with. However, making a living on TH-cam, may mean having to take less ethical sponsorships and it makes you more prone to having depression again. I’ve revamped TH-cam for myself and absolutely love life right now. I think you should consider this. I don’t and will not rely on TH-cam for income anymore… it’s freeing. My main job will now provide 100% of the financial support to make off-road adventure videos. Most jobs have time off (mine didn’t till this year). The benefit of a job allows me to be more connected to my audience (who also works real jobs) while making awesome videos simply for fun. I’m so excited about filming with this mindset. Oh that last video didn’t perform despite editing it for weeks, now it’s no big deal. I’m not saying you can’t be a TH-camr like Trail Recon or the Story till Now, but as someone who has had depression, full time YouTubing will likely bring it back. Find a job that you love, then make videos on the side… it’s realistic and makes TH-cam so much fun again. Whatever you do, good luck!

Id like to say a couple things. First thank you for ur service and sacrifices. Secondly im glad you have found a way to actually live and love what you do and i hope that it can continue for you. I love the channel and how you present the adventures you go on and the guys you colab with while doing it. Dont get discouraged by lil things ppl complain about. Rob was going over some things ppl comment about on his live lastnite and its truly unbelieveable. If u have to have adds on ur channel right now then so what. I can sit through a few seconds of an add without getting completely sidetracked. I feel like we r in an age where its cool to just complain about any and everything and its crazy to me. Keep your head high, stay consistant, and you will reach your goals and make this into the salary you had before and then some and u will do it all while not knowing its being done bcuz u truly seem to love this. You, Revere Overland, and Venture 2 Roam each inspire me to get out and start overlanding. I have a life threatening disease that i live with everyday but if i didnt tell you that most ppl would never know. Just like i wouldnt have known your hardships without this video, we know how to push through walls and live a beautiful life in the face of adversity. Thanks again for sharing this bro and stay focused and it will pay off!

Jesus, I can 100% relate to you. After the long, awkward, and painfully slow adjustment to civilian life (I've been out for three years), I recently started my second career. I ordered my Everglades Bronco last month and have been watching your channel since then. Losing your identity is hard, losing it and being surrounded by people who have no idea and don't even operate the same way is way harder. Keep on trucking, homie, and thank you.

One more thing - for the YOU in YOU.
Your out focused on the trail, conditions, and the shots. Your working...
One of my favorite vids on TH-cam - Tacoma Beast.
He rolled up on the Beast
quickly set up shop. Night fell fast as he prepped his firewood. Sparked danced from the fire. He prepped his meal over the fire. Temps dropped. He turned in for the night.
My point here is. He NEVER spoke a word. He was blessed with a space in time. It was his.
Many of us that go out know the silence, the crackle of the fire in our heart and mind.
Thats where we are OFF THE GRIND.
Do not overlook your blessing of time and space - working in a creation none of us will ever completely see.
Enjoy our backyards to the fullest.

Also there is no shame in making money. I think product placement is fine. Many of our regular TH-camr’s that we watch have product placement and we say good for them for adding to their income.
Plus it has introduced us to many products we would not have known about.

Opening up like you have, not just in this video, but in all your vids, is what sets you and your channel apart. Keep the faith and stay the course. Also, your product placements and integrations also add to your channel's value for the viewer. This is because you are consistantly true to yourself and "own it" when it doesn't work out, and are modest when it does. Your honesty and commitment to transparency actually makes your product reviews more valuable to the viewer because we can be sure its an honest assessment. Finally, I am so happy and proud for you that you recognized that you were in crisis and took steps to get well and get right. My own story is remarkably similar to yours and it does feel good to get free of the golden handcuffs and do what brings you joy. There is healing in what you do and what you bring - for us (the viewer) as well as for yourself. Keep bringin' it, Brother.

Refreshing honesty. Great content also. I won’t lie, it’s hard as a TH-cam premium subscriber to watch this content because while the content itself is awesome, I can’t handle all of the video sponsorship and ad integration when the whole point of me paying for TH-cam is to not have to be forced to watch commercials. I love overlanding videos, but I’ve been noticing more and more sponsored videos and product placement recently to the point where it detracts from the experience.

I have recently seen the Story till now episode with Shawn and yourself in the Nevada desert. Shawn's recommendation to check out your channel sent me to " Off the Grind". I don't think that there could possibly be a better overlanding/ adventure channel name. I started looking through your videos for the first time and found this one.... I am a 40 year old man, father, husband, son, brother, uncle, grandson that was raised in the northern Candain oil patch. I deal with trauma indused PTSD. To be clear, not from military service like yourself but major trauma of its own. As men in a world where soo many members of our lives depend on our strength, protection, leadership, our ability to provide, and love and care at the same time.... mental health is something that needs to talked about more... When an individual is and the very bottom of there life... conversations like this one is what got me to seek out help. Help to develop the tools and the approach to life needed to climb back on top where we all should live and love. I Can't thank you enough for making this video, I also strongly suggest that there are many of your subscribers that are dealing with mental health in some way and are terrified to recognize it, or don't have the resources to help them. This video does not need to be the last on this topic, in fact what a success story to show your journey and how it is changing you life continually.
All the best with Off the Grind, and great job with this video and your bravery.

Just got into Overland out here in the PNW and a friend referred me to your channel. Being a retired combat vet myself, I can relate. 2002 was a rough year for me being deployed to Afghanistan, still lingers in my mind from time to time. Civilians can never relate and your military friends have heard the stories a million times, so chatting with someone who is a professional was helpful. I also, just had a friend of a friend (Marine) commit suicide last week, I seriously just ran into him two weeks ago at our local watering hole and I just found out this week. Just remember you are never alone in this struggle. Keep doing what you are doing!! Hang in there brother.

Man, what a powerful video. It took a seriously big set to put this out there, and I deeply and sincerely appreciate you being this open and upfront with things. And this story is not a distraction. My interest in your channel just went up 10x, and took me from "Oh look, another Overland Channel" to "wow, this just got interesting...". I'm hoping to launch a TH-cam channel this year that is dealing with very similar issues (thought I'm not a Vet..). And in my case I see the personal challenges being as much of the story as anything else. As far as that dang "money thing".... Yes, we all need to make some money. You don't need to apologize for that. I just checked on Patreon and it didn't seem like you had a channel there. I think that is working well for a lot of people. And if I were in your shoes I wouldn't be totally adverse to you having sponsored content. It's all about how you do it. On most of the channels I watch I end up with their sponsored link for another VPN or "Better Help" or "Athletic Greens". Those all seem inauthentic to me. If you only embrace products or companies that you truly believe in that means so much more. No matter what, I'm a big fan of your channel now. Keep the rubber bits on the ground and keep exploring!

Product placement and sponsors are a necessary part of what you are trying to do, so don't sweat it too much. I was Active Army for 15 years (19k30) and I miss it a lot for the most part. I have struggled to adapt to the "civilian" world. It is not the same as where we come from. Most people struggle to get people like us. I think that is why I do the offroad and fast car stuff with the Broncos and Mustangs. It is a release from the normalcy of civilian life.

Your struggle forced you diving for cover from confusion and frustration. The cognitive dissonance that brought you to your knees culminated into the very grind your productions attempt to escape.
Happiness is obvious when you are behind the wheel trekking through amazing places, environments conjuring a sense of peace and belonging. You can love your truck, you can love camping, yet their combination conveys a wonder you strive to amplify.
Nearly 35,000 individuals subscribe to this channel for various reasons, but they all have a singular component in common: You. Thanks for sharing all the good stuff, and more importantly thank you for sharing your crisis.
Our influence on others cannot be properly measured. Beyond the Ford fans or overlanding enthusiasts, true connection to your audience comes from the bravery it takes to confess humanity. Videos like this are powerful and I hope it is not the last of its kind you release.
Overlanding may have saved you, but do not neglect to acknowledge your own daring could be another’s rescue.

Steve, thank you so much for saying that. This was a tough video to release honestly, but feedback like this makes it easier, and definitely easier to make one similar if needed. I’ve heard from a lot of people saying that my videos help them escape from whatever their struggles are as well, and that has turned in to my driving force with life now. I love that I can do that for people.
What a beautifully worded comment though and I can’t tell you how much it means to me. This is one of those comments I’ll save.
      Thanks again my man.
      David
