    Dirt Bike Magazine did individual tests on these bikes at Cahuilla MX a while back. We know that this isn't a typical versus video but we said what the heck, let's make a fun video for our viewers to check out. Our editorial staff compares each bike and the technological changes that Honda has made over the past 20+ years. You might be surprised on our final thoughts at the end of the video!

      Oh boo hoo . The simple answer is that the 450 is already too much for a grand majority of riders , the 500 is just ridiculous because of the way the power comes on . End of the day just get a 450 and you’ll have more power than you’ll know what to do with , and you won’t pay the ridiculous prices that people are selling them for .

    • @gpaull2
      @gpaull2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nostalgia has a way of making things better than they were. There is a reason that 500s stopped production even before 4 strokes took over. They are hard to start, have a horrible power deliver, and vibrate too much (which is made worse by an aluminum frame). Unless you’re ice racing buy any other modern bike, 2 or 4 stroke.

    • @Corteum
      @Corteum ปีที่แล้ว +9

      In the right hands, and tuned properly, the 500 2t would own the 450. But few riders have the skill or the ballz to ride it at the limit. The powerband is just way too scary for most riders to handle.

    • @abelvelazco5450
      @abelvelazco5450 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Corteum 250 2 stroke is the most you’d even use in a track environment, even then you don’t use that to max capacity on a track 100% of the time .

    • @Corteum
      @Corteum ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abelvelazco5450 It depends on how much energy, focus, and ballz you got. The more you have of that, the harder you can ride it at the limit. But no 250 2-stroke is going to compete against a properly tuned 450 4stroke. Probably a well tuned, sooped up 350 2stroke would do it though.

    4 strokes suck! I like how he says we did this video for our viewers. What did you exactly do besides say check our print magazine. Most of these articles say, "If I was racing i would go for the CR450. If I was out for fun I would go for the CR500". Too bad Honda is not listening. They would sell as many two strokes as they could make.

    • @Davido50
      @Davido50 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Honda doesn't listen. They cut a deal w/Feds to sell more of there junky compact cars. So 2-strokes are out for them . Period. I don't like any of there bikes anymore. I buy Yamaha or KTM. I'd never drive a Honda either.

  • @mouthofpower8492
    @mouthofpower8492 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The reason anyone clicks on this is for the cr500. I know magazines and “media” have to cover the new 4 strokes because otherwise they’d not have jobs but they’re just boring bikes and boring to ride and boring to pay a ton of money for a shop to fix because they’re not simple enough for a normal guy with a normal job to enjoy fixing or rebuilding in his own time. Same with the air forks garbage. “New technology” that was expensive and boring, 45 year old men showing up with soccer ball pumps and a $12,000 KTM at the track just to get pissed losing 10 PSI taking it off lmao just embarrassing. Now the brand new Hondas come with forks and shocks from 2006, which is a good thing but holy shit A LOT of people were screwed over buying during the air suspension era. And all of the 4stroke crap was supposedly for emissions, specifically California…

  • @rossjohnson2151
    @rossjohnson2151 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This comparison illustrates that the only thing the Japanese factories have accomplished in the last twenty years is making the bikes more expensive and heavier. Make that 40 years. My 1978 CR250R was lighter and so much simpler and it was fast and fun to race. And zero maintenance. Clean the filter, change the oil. But it had no valves so Honda sold no parts for them. And it only cost around $1500.
    That new 450 is what happens when you let Honda make the rules. And even at these prices people still hate stock suspension!!
    It just shows what con artists they are.

    What alot of people seem to forget about the 500s is theyre an open desert bike. I had a 97 500 and rode it for years. The front fork rake is more forward for higher speeds in the desert. I was smoking 450s left and right in the desert and rarely would have one even keep up. now on a track the 450s will keep up with a 500 no problem theyre more managable in that enviornment. But from my experience overall a 500 is the ultimate desert king.

    • @GlorifyGodInEverything
      @GlorifyGodInEverything 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Technically the xr600R is the ultimate desert king which was the predecessor to the big bad xr650R (both 4 strokes). The CR500 is just the raining chief that can do any style of racing because of the big boy power it makes.

      @@rippenxwhiskey4358 haha yea man, a lot of people say they wish the 650R was still around. Those bikes, even the 600R was i think 300+ pounds. They shined in those long stretches of 90+mph desert runs though. But yea man good luck getting your hands on a 500, such awesome bikes. I have a 650L as of now which to be honest I absolutely love. It's essentially a 600R that comes street legal and has a magic switch on it. Maybe one day i'll get a 500 but I remember as a kid my dad crashed over a table top and broke his back, his nose, multiple fingers and some ribs from one fall so i've always had some fear getting onto one of those.

      @GlorifyGodInEverything just respect it man, 1997 was Hondas fastest year then they toned em back a little bit, the 500s did keep up with the 650s for the most part on the flats, however when it came to those tight parts during the race the 500 outperformed the 650s naturally, you can get a 500AF for like 4-13k right now just an FYI, I want one pretty bad lol, they're so beautiful

    How well would the CR 500 perform today if Honda had continued to do research development on the two stroke motor.
    I have often wonderd if it were posable to design a flywheel that could self adjust the weight to the rpms of the motor.
    When I have put a large flywheel wieght on my 500 it would pull a lot smoother on the low end but you loose top end. How great it woould be to harness all that power.

    • @christianyaney
      @christianyaney ปีที่แล้ว

      They’re too much power and if they had all of today’s tech they would be above and beyond what your average rider could handle.
      I remember back in the 90’s you couldn’t give away the big 500’s. Everyone was opting for 250’s.
      The perfect open 2 stroke displacement was the KTM 380 they made 20 years ago. You had that open bike punch up top, good torque, but handled like a 250. If KTM would make one of those again with electric start and EFI that would be a 4 stroke destroyer. Back in the day I easily would smoke guys with YZ426F on that 380.

    • @GMCBigBlock420
      @GMCBigBlock420 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@christianyaney honestly, they really never saw it being developed. All of the European brands brought the technology forward and continue to sell them. The fourth stroke engine is technically superior… At least on paper. Frankly, all pro writers seem to agree that 450 4 strokes are too fast for the tracks they race on. Simply put, two strokes aren’t going to dominate racing because of the technology has a plateau, and the fourth stroke is more capable of producing a linear power. I bet you 350 cc four strokes will have a place going forward… You can bank on that

      Some of you people are crazy. This comparison in the video isn't even right! Take a brand new Built500 on a brand new chassis against the new 450f and it would be over for the 450f. They talk up that 500 motor in this video but it ain't nothing compared to a new full built all aluminum billet motor built with the works of Eric Gore, Adam Millar an AJ Waggoner! Of coarse it takes a specific rider for a 2 stroke. Today's younger pro caliber riders often dont know how to properly race a serious built 2 stroke.

    I enjoyed the video, but I'd like to see some top pro riders on both and see them actually race. imho I don't think it'd be much of a race if the CR500 rider was a top pro rider. I know it's not a MX race but my son had 2 CRF450 a 04 and 07 and in a drag race, almost a 1/4 mile, in my pasture my 87 CR500 could beat both of them and I weighed 40lbs more than he did. When I say I won it wasn't by a lot but still the old bike got it done every time.

    Couldn't help but notice the guy that favored the 450 4puke let off on the throttle when he was on the CR500. To allow the other on the 450 4puke to get by. But, in the Slowmo footage when both riders were on the gas the CR500 was out front. We all know why you magazine editors do not truly do a lap time comparison between the two. We all know the more anyone rides the CR500 the Faster they get. Which will be faster than thier fastest lap time on the 450 4puke. I will also mention that the CR500af you used in this video is not the Cream of the crop Conversion. Built500 "Aj Waggoner " builds the CR500AF with the newest of chassis. If your going to compare these two bikes. Do it correctly. Let riders set the bike up for them and let him or her ride it to get used to it for a week ...

    The 500 engine is well over 20yrs old, the first was in 85 (84 was air cooled), with only minor changes until the early 90's when development stopped on the 500s until they were discontinued in 2001. This bloke didn't really seem to know what he was talking about.

    • @harrypeterson9287
      @harrypeterson9287 ปีที่แล้ว

      You say that almost as if you think they didn't know how to build a two stroke motor even in 2001... They were making about the same HP per CC way back in the day. Even KTMs latest SX250s are making power in the same ballpark as 250s of the 80s.
      4 strokes haven't seen massive leaps in technological advancement in a long time either, nobody was even trying to make a true 4 stroke motocross bike until the 2000s.
      Hopped up naturally aspirated cars in the 70s were making more HP per displacement on pump gas than the 450s of today, that was with a carb and points instead of modern variable mapped EFI and variable ignition timing/duration.
