Finally, Finally FINALLY!!! I knew y'all would love this! And Amber's face when she realized who Bono was singing about says it all. Another song with a similar theme that I think y'all would like is "Biko" by Peter Gabriel - about Steve Biko, a leader in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa in the 1970's who also gave his life "in the name of love".

OMG yes. I love U2! The Unforgettable Fire is awesome as well. I love all of Peter Gabriel's songs (more than U2) especially Biko. Johnny Clegg (The White Zulu, RIP) and Savuka sing about Nelson Mandela and honour Steve Biko in Asimbonanga (Mandela) (th-cam.com/video/UJujyzA2Q1E/w-d-xo.html ).

$10/day while they filmed footage for Rattle and Hum. One of the highlights of my life.
Alright in the 80s shat now
Meanwhile, while researching a bit of family history recently I discovered U2 recorded some of their early demos in my house! My Dad was a live-in manager of a nightclub, and we had the apartment on the top floor, but in between was a small recording studio that was usually used for recording radio ad jingles and stuff but which it turns out U2 used to use too because they couldn't afford a top of the line one yet. I have vague memories I used to sit on the stairs and listen to the music of the different acts, but I had no idea what I was listening to or who they'd become!

@@yaimavolI assume that they are talking about Jonah. In the Bible, Jonah didn't want to do what God asked of him, so he fled. He was lost overboard in a storm and was swallowed by a large fish. While in the belly of the fish he repented and the fish spit him out onto a beach and from there Jonah went preaching the gospel.

This girl knows her history. She picked up on the MLK reference immediately. The video was shot around the bands home town of Dublin, as we're many of their early videos. For your next one I suggest Unforgettable Fire or Gloria. Both from the early days of their catalogue

I absolutely love the 80s U2 era - great music arrangements and sounds. Bono‘s voice at its best.
The live version I'm hoping for is "Bad". As a DJ put it once, it's eight of the best minutes on the radio. Would also LOVE to see them react to the Numb video. First time I heard that on the radio, I didn't know who it was and had to resist the urge to change the channel. Song ended and they said it was U2, and my brain exploded. It has since become one of my favorite songs of theirs, just because I enjoy things that are different.

I’m always amazed at how well Amber picks up on the lyrics and meanings of songs. Most of the songs they listen to I know the lyrics and what they’re about but I sure didn’t my FIRST TIME listening to them!

OMG! I hadn't heard "When Love Comes To Town" so I checked it out. That rapidly shot to the top of my łist of favorites! I'm nearly 60 years old, and not much makes me get up and dance, but that one did. Well done, BB and U2!!!!!

We were listening to this my Senior year of HS in ‘85. It sounds as good now to me as it did then!
One of my favorite songs is one that U2 performed with the late, great BB King, "When Love Comes to Town". Man that guy could play the blues.
I met Mr. King once back in the 80s when I interned at a radio station and my boss took me to the show. We hung out with him and his band afterwards and he was so sweet and kind. And, as you said, he sure could play the blues.
This is one of my favourite U2 songs - full of heart and passion, and with a powerful message.
As Amber realised, this is a tribute to Dr Martin Luther King ( assassinated on April 4 1968, hence the reference to "Early morning, April 4" although he got the time of day wrong) -and this song is very much informed by Bono's own faith.
The various men referred to have never been identified for certain by Bono to my knowledge (although the last one is obvious), but given his personal faith:
"One man he resists" could be Gandhi whose non-violent resistance was famous;
"One man washed on an empty beach" is probably a reference to St Paul washed up on the shore in Malta after a shipwreck (but could be Jonah);
"One man betrayed with a kiss" is Jesus Christ, of course.
It's been speculated that some of the men referred to were perhaps Irish rebels/freedom fighters or soldiers from WWI or the Cold War, and so on, but to me that seems unlikely as they are not necessarily supporters of love, and the song has more of a religious foundation, so they are more likely to be people counted as non-confrontational advocates of peace and love like saints or martyrs.
Having said that, "One man caught on a barbed wire fence" is very specific, and there is an infamous case of 18 year old German bricklayer Peter Fechter who died at the Berlin Wall when he tried to cross from East to West Germany in 1962 to be with some of his family who he had been separated from. He was shot, got trapped on barbed wire and was left to bleed to death by guards who would not approach to help him. His last act could be said to be "in the name of love" because he was trying to get to be with his sister and her side of the family.

It’s a great look into what it means to be Irish. The poetry and music is just them trying to explain a feeling we can’t get. U2 is a high school band from dublin that just worked. Despite the atrocities many of us papists still root for the church to find a better path. Bono’s catholicism is inspiration for a huge part of songbook.

I was 15 when I first heard this song on American Top 40. From the beginning when the guitar sounds like a bell tolling, Bono's compelling vocals and the guitar solo that sounded like nothing I'd heard before. I was electrified!

This was on their 4th album "Unforgettable Fire" released in 1984. Impossible that it is 39 years old! This was the first song I heard by U2. I had heard of them, but in the days before the internet, TH-cam, and various music streaming the only way to hear someone was to go to the record store and see if they have a sample copy to play or wait for the radio to play something. I heard this song and knew right away it was U2 and was immediately a fan. Still am.

Martin Luther King Jr. is part of the songs subject “…April 4, shot rings out in the Memphis sky, free at last, they took your life, they could not take your pride”. and I was so impressed by that as a young black girl in the eighties! It always makes me tear up! I believe he was also referring to Jesus early on when he said “one man betrayed with a kiss” when Judas kissed Jesus on the cheek as a signal to the soldiers to arrest him!❤❤

For a while back in the 80s they were the biggest band in the world. I remember the hype going to the 'Love comees to town' tour concert with BB King opening. It was huge. A great concert too.

For 36 years, my favorite song of all time has been "I STILL HAVEN'T FOUND WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR". For whatever reason the lyrics & gospel influence speaks to me. Blessed to have heard this song at their concert. Bono & The Edge 🔥

Love that track as well! Was fortunate enough to have seen them a couple times too. The last time was at MSG about a month after 9/11 & they had a bunch of FDNY and EMS workers come on the stage during the song 'Walk On,' and they shone all the names of the perished on the walls via laser. The most emotional show I've ever been to by a long shot & pretty sure there was not a dry eye in the place. These guys are the real deal in my book!

Not only can these Irish lads deliver on the rock Every Single Time, but they are also true Irish poets. They just happen to set their poetry to music. They are truly gifted and iconic. My all time favorite band...and I have a lot of favorites.

I doubt that any others will recommend this song, but U2's Mothers of the Disappeared from the Joshua Tree album has startling and heartbreaking lyrics and music. It shows what the band could do when motivated to send an important message.
It's so hard to listen to, truly haunting and heartbreaking. Running to Stand Still is also a masterpiece (and also tragic). They were never quite a rock band the way we think of rock - they were too political to fit that mold
This video is possibly their biggest love letter to their home town too, with all the shots of the working class areas of Dublin. I also love the hunger you feel coming through the speakers - this is the U2 that were still on the relentless cycle of small gigs trying to make it work. In fact this was their first ever #1 (in New Zealand! It didn't even hit the top in their native Ireland and only got to #33 in America where they were almost completely unknown) and they were still 3 years away from their first US #1 at this point.

“Rattle and Hum” is a documentary about U2 released in 1988. In the film and the double album released after, the band sings “Still Haven’t Found…” with a gospel choir. Find it! Listen to it! Love it!
Amber you hit upon it perfectly: This song is about individuals who, yes, can be taken down, but their message of love goes on. They stood proud; they spoke truth to power and resisted.
A U2 song with a similar theme - sung not about the people who resist, but TO the people who resist - is a lesser known song called "Walk On." It will raise your spirits.

Modern U2 is a shadow of itself, but the young, fiery, angst riddled band was incredible and incredible to see live. I've seen them many times, starting in this era, but Bono is one of the few front men who REALLY, and I mean REALLY connects with his audience. It's amazing to watch him work the crowd in a live show. Pure genius. I've met MANY famous people in the world, including Beatles, sports figures, etc., and I always say if you could sit with one person and have a conversation, it would be Bono. He's an interesting figure.

What a concert!
Even before anything happened on stage there was a real party feeling in the crowd with seemingly everyone there singing along to the music being played over the pa...giant beachballs being thrown and bounced around the arena...more Mexican waves than the beach at Cancun...just a fun atmosphere!
B.B.King and his band opened which was incredible. B.B. later joined U2 during their show for Love Comes To Town.
U2 did a fantastic set, playing all their old (then current) classics.
They finished the concert with Pride (In The Name Of Love) and when they started it the roar from the crowd was just incredible. A physical thing.
To this day I've never had another live music experience like that concert. It's something I'll remember 'til my dying day.

Bad by U2 at Live Aid is amazing. Also, A Sort Of Homecoming (Wide Awake in America version) are my favorites since 1985
Larry Mullen, Jr., is one of the strongest drummers in rock, and this song is an example. Adam Clayton on bass rounds out the solid foundation underneath The Edge's brilliant guitar work. And what else is there to say bout the powerful, soulful voice of Bono. Such a great song. Hoping you'll get around to checking out "Bullet the Blue Sky" sometime in the future, but I'm happy to see you reacting to this too!

Bullet the Blue Sky is one of those rare songs where I don't care if they do the album version or the live version. I'm usually 100 percent behind studio when it's a first time listen to any song, but the live version is just as polished and has plenty of added live energy.
Edge's brilliant guitar work? Are you kidding me? The dude has 2 tons of effects to make his sound. Watch It Might Get Loud. That tool is completely useless without a semi loaded with electronic assistance. He looked like a toddler when he played with Jimmy Page and Jack White.
@@rustyshackleford1507Eh, he doesn’t want to sound like anyone else and he made a lot of money doing it. I don’t like to sound like everyone else either and I tend to use a lot of effects. Granted, I play in my living room, but finding simple things that go a long way on the guitar is pretty tough within a band. I used to cover GnR and Metallica and they’re great and all, but U2 probably wouldn’t have gotten the attention they did if they sounded like everyone else.
I love turning on this channel when I already know how they will react, I just knew if Amber would listen to the lyrics that she would melt, and she didn’t disappoint. Love these guys for bringing joy to us all ✌️

My most favourite version of this song was always from their Rattle & Hum (1988) album. Because of the emotion in Bono's voice. To this day it causes a lump in my throat, and tears threatening to fall.

I was lucky enough to see U2 several times in the late 80s and early 90s, including the shows at Tempe AZ that were filmed for Rattle and Hum. The shows would end so powerfully with U2 singing "40", leaving the stage one by one, and the crowd would continue to sing the refrain "How long to sing this song", often for several minutes with the stage completely empty.

Interesting short story from SongFacts:
U2 began their Joshua Tree Tour in Tempe, Arizona, where the governor was opposed to Martin Luther King Day being made a US federal holiday. By the time the band headed back to Tempe to close out the tour, they were receiving death threats for supporting the proposed holiday. Things took a serious turn before their gig at Sun Devil Stadium when someone claimed he would shoot Bono on stage if he sang the King-inspired song. Bono recalls in the band's book U2 by U2: "One night the FBI said: 'Look, it's quite serious. He says he has a ticket. He said he's armed. And he said if you sing 'Pride (In The Name Of Love),' he's going to shoot you.' So we played the show, the FBI were around, everyone was a little unnerved. holy crap. i have been a fan since the War album, and i have friends who were at both the Red Rocks show for that album's tour AND at Sun Devil Stadium for this concert, and i've *never* heard this story before. whoa. Adam was ready to take a bullet for Bono... now that's real love and friendship there. U2 continues to inspire...

Absolute classic
Takes me back to the days when my mother would drive me and my cousins from Manchester UK back to Mayo, Ireland every Easter and some summer's in the 80;s to visit our other Grandparents, cousins, Aunties and Uncles. We would land off the Ferry from the UK in the south of Dublin around 7am.
We drove the 3/4 hour journey from east to west Ireland listening to U2 and The Smiths as the sun was gradually rising and each town was getting busier.
The excitement of 4 kids who were 10 -14 in 1986, listening to tunes from U2 like Pride, The Streets Have No Name, With or Without You, I still Haven't Found What I'm Looking.
Also The Smiths songs like This Charming Man, Frankly Mr Shankly, The Boy with a Thorn in his Side, Cemetry Gates and There is a Light That Never Goes Out.
As we got a few towns from where we all called Home (despite never having lived their) it was incredibly exciting.
Those holidays our the most precious moments of my childhood and U2 and The Smiths en-route played a special part.

This is one of their best from one of my all time favorite albums. I saw them live for the first time on the tour to support this album and they weren’t just good, they were inspirational. React to the entire Unforgettable Fire album, it’s U2 at their finest.
Thank you so much Amber for catching that reference at the end that every American should understand. You've no idea how many reaction videos miss the point of the song and who it is dedicated to. "Free at last" and "they took your life" should be a dead giveaway.

Why I love U2 - the minute you figure out what the song is really about. Watching Amber’s face the minute the penny dropped (Early morning, April 4, a shot rings out in the Memphis sky, Free at last, they took your life, they could not take your pride) and it’s like “It’s about MLK!” U2 is so great about getting a message through without you even realizing it. Would refer to Hands That Built America as another song like that.
Amber's on it. And MLK's message was so strong because of the non-violent peaceful resistance. This was VERY IMPORTANT and it changed hearts and minds.
Another U2 masterpiece.....Amber always seems to get it...❤

I love seeing you young cats jamming to u2... I saw them the first time in 83 and i was hooked. They played a show in a coliseum that held 5000, to an audience of about 100 people. A few months later they blew up and played Red Rocks (where I saw them) to a sold out venue.
