Let me fill in a few of the details on this song: Bono wrote "Sweetest Thing" as a belated birthday present to his wife, Ali, after she turned 25. On her birthday (March 23) in 1986, he was working on recording The Joshua Tree album and noticed she wasn't speaking to him. He later realized why: he forgot her birthday. To make up for it, he wrote her this song, which isn't all lovey dovey but paints a realistic portrait of their love, which can be stormy at times but is ultimately the sweetest thing. When Bono gave this song to Ali, she asked if that included the proceeds from it as well. It did, so she directed all earnings from the song to one of her favorite charities: Chernobyl Children International.
I knew the reason for the song. Now I know how generous Ali has been with it. I also just learned that she is two days older than me. Fun video. I had never seen it before.
This U2 video was filmed in Dublin City where all of the band are from. The dancers are traditional Irish dancers and I know you would love ‘Riverdance’ from the 1994 Eurovision [ the event where ABBA broke onto the world stage with their winning song‘Waterloo” 20 years before . ‘Riverdance’ was the intermission entertainment in 1994 and against all expectations it blew everybody away that night especially as the intermission act at Eurovision’ up to that point was a bit of a necessary filler-in yawn fest after the performances and before the nail biting vote tallies came in from all over Europe. This was in a class of it’s own with music especially composed for the event by Bill Whelan with beautiful ‘ Enya’ like vocals and phenomenal Irish traditional dancing that was both authentic to the tradition but mingled in with touches of Flamenco and theatrical flare .It and the company led by the dancers Michael Flattley and Jean Butler became a worldwide phenomenon performing to sellout audiences all over the world and its still going strong. I know how you guys love the ethereal voices of Enya, Kate Bush [Irish Mom] Sineàd O Connor and Dolores O Riordan so you’ll adore this mystical spell binding masterpiece .Enjoy whenever you get to see it xxx
Softer side of u2. There's a lot to dive into this versatile band's history. "Even Better Than The Real Thing" , "Until The End Of The World" & " Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me Kill Me" from a Batman Movie are my faves. React to those soon. Thanks. 😎
You guys HAVE to do “bad” from Live Aid. Considered one of the most iconic live rock performances, and their set helped catapult them to superstar status.
I love lots and lots of U2 songs, and Bad is Top 5 for me….maybe No. 1, but yes….”BAD” AT LIVE AID is one of the truly most iconic music performances you will ever see. I suggested it some time ago, but I’m not sure they saw my rec.
I don't know. It seems like there's so much backstory with that one that won't be understood or appreciated. Yes, it nearly ruined the band but instead got them noticed, but that's not apparent in the video. I think "Bad" from Rattle and Hum might be a better choice (I once heard it played on a Salt Lake City alternative music station and the DJ called it "the best 8 minutes in radio"). But I totally agree they should check out some live versions of U2's songs. You only get half the band from their videos (most of which aren't very good - "Sweetest Thing" is one of the best). U2 really shines when they're live.
@@jgreen6772 I don't know - I think the energy of the moment really comes through in that performance. I had "Unforgettable Fire" constantly playing on my Walkman (knock-off, not Sony) and thought they stole the show when I saw Live Aid. Then Queen came on and stole it back, but still, it was great.
Queen were the winners on the day of Live Aid but U2 took second place. The funny thing was the Queen performance was meticulously rehearsed and executed while Bono totally messed up U2s plans for the show.
Love this one...great pick. However, I'm going to continue asking for "Angel of Harlem". This is a really fun and upbeat song. The first U2 song to go on any of my playlists.
Yeah, and a few other Rattle & Hum tunes they should liosten to: Desire; When love comes to Town; All I Want is You. And from the same period, the song they did with Robbie Robertson on his first solo album - Sweet Fire of Love.
Probably my favorite U2 song is "So Cruel", but they have so any amazing ones to choose from. You've just scratched the surface! On "I Will Follow", they were SO YOUNG. "Bullet the Blue Sky" is so so good, "Trying To Throw Your Arms Around the World", "All I Want Is You"...seriously, the list goes on and on. "Numb" is one I always liked a lot. The Edge sings lead with Bono singing backup, and the video is really great. It's pretty different than a lot of their other songs, but I think you'd enjoy it as well.
I love that you included Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World, and All I Want Is You. They are two of the most underrated U2 songs if you ask me.
That's his wife, Ali, that gets on the carriage at the start of the video. This was his apology song to her for forgetting her birthday so he was pulling all the stops in the video to make it up to her. I think he succeeded! LOL! U2 is one of my top 3 favorite bands. Y'all should also check out "Electrical Storm." So many great songs in their catalog.
I’m surprised the reactors haven’t discovered “A Sort of Homecoming” off the Wide Awake in America EP. That track is a testament to Bono’s amazing emotional vocals and U2’s earnest musical positivity.
Omg, I didn't realize how big a U2 fan I was til I was liking songs on Spotify and I realized half of my list were U2 songs! Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses may be my favorite, but I love all the songs you've reacted to so far, plus City of Blinding Light, Bullet the Blue Sky (must be the live version!) I will Follow, Stay (Far Away, So Close,) Tryin to Throw Your Arms Around the World, Two Hearts Beat As One, Until the End of the World, Lemon, Numb, Elevation, Walk On, Sometimes You Can't Make it on Your Own, Get On Your Boots, Mysterious Ways... so many more!!!
That’s a pretty great U2 playlist. “BAD” and “I WILL FOLLOW” are two of my favorite songs ever. Everything you mentioned is really good. I genuinely love every song on their albums, “WAR”, “THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE”, and “THE JOSHUA TREE”.
In my opinion, U2 is one of the Top 5 bands in music history. I honestly feel sorry for younger people today that are not very familiar with U2’s music. When I think of comparing a contemporary “artist” like Olivia Rodrigo or Selena Gomez to U2, I can only role my eyes. In fact most top 80s (and 90s too) artists are on a much higher level of creativity and sound compared with most artists of today, many of whom can’t even play a musical instrument.
@@gdoggatl True. Near the beginning of the video, the Irish boy band Boyzone appears behind Bono. One of the lead singers, Ronan Keating, said U2 originally offered the song to them but they turned it down. I think you'd like some of Ronan's solo songs, especially When You Say Nothing At All and Little Thing Called Love.
I play this song to my wife all the time along with all i want is you. Gave her these songs on a CD while we were dating. Bono and his wife have been together for 40 years, pretty amazing for even a normal marriage these days. I wish you review all i want is you, live version from slane Castle is the best. Also bb King with u2 on when love comes to town is great R&B, angel of Harlem (l know how Amber loves horn sections). All of their music has underlying meaning.
As others have commented this was an apology to Bono's wife for forgetting her birthday. I could be completely wrong, but I think all the different people in the background the Irish dancers, firefighters, the band Boyzone and others was his wife's favourite things. My favourite U2 songs I would recommend are All I want is you, Desire and When Love Comes To Town, which was with B.B. king, wishing you both well and sending peace.
U2 are from Ireland and almost all the people that appear behind him are Famous Irish people like Boyzone, the boxer Steve Collins, the Riverdance irish dancers and the Fire engine had the Chippendales flexing their muscles. The three people at the end are the rest of the band.
The 5 guys joining in right at the start doing backup on "the sweetest thing" are the guys from "Boyzone" try them in "No matter what" or "Love me for a reason" "The sweetest thing" was from 1998 and "Beautiful day" is from 2000, "Vertigo" is 2004, "Sunday bloody sunday" is from 1983
The dark-haired lady giving Bono the annoyed look is actually Bono's wife Ali. This song was originally written as an apology for missing her birthday because the band were so locked into recording The Joshua Tree, and he missed the party. I'm glad you picked the video version. This is actually a re-record of the song that the band cut in 1998 for their first greatest hits compilation. The original version from 1987 is actually available to hear: it's on disc 2 of the Anniversary Edition of The Joshua Tree, which has all the B-sides and outtakes, and it is FREAKING TERRIBLE: Bono's voice is not in tune (no Auto-Tune back then...) and completely shredded. Good rule of thumb: do not record with a sore throat. It's just bad. This one, on the other hand? I love. My girlfriend in college and I? This was our song: I was the blue-eyed boy, and she was the brown-eyed girl. Relationship didn't last, but this still makes me smile.
U2 was the No. 1 band of an entire decade…the 80s….and well into the 90s as well. Any band that dominates an entire decade is unarguably one of the most significant and important bands of all-time.
The first time I saw Bono, the hair reminded me of one of our family friend. I love Bono and the whole of U2, they have great songs from great albums. When I used to work those long hours, Sunday to Sunday, which I enjoyed this was a frequent song on the radio. Couldn't work without some music on the radio keeping me company, especially when most times I was alone in my section. I miss those days they were simpler times even though some days were stressful, there was a purpose to getting all that work done.
Bono wrote this for his wife who was his high school sweetheart who he married in 1982. They are from Ireland. One of my favourite songs is Walk On. You should check it out and With or Without You.
Not a U2 suggestion per se, but in the late 1990s/early 2000s, there was a band out of Ireland called The Corrs. Bono performed a song with them called "When the Stars Go Blue." The harmonies are gorgeous; you should definitely check it out when you get a chance.
How can you not know that U2 are from Ireland, specifically Dublin, Ireland?!!! Ok, I'll let you off on this one because you listening or to know them when they were huge, and I mean huge, biggest band in the world huge. It's incredible to think they were relatively unknown, in the UK at least, when they played Live Aid (you know the one with that amazing Queen set with Freddie being Freddie) with many of the other top artists of the time thinking who are these guys. Well a decade later, maybe less, they had to eat their words. Amazing band, so many great songs. More U2 please!!! Two of my favourites are Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses and Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of. Don't think you've reacted to either of these.
Yes now on their Greatest hits , a really smooth and mellow song from U2. I think U2 and Simple Minds were two of the most powerful bands of the 80's and 90's. Check out 'Angel of Harlem' by U2 and 'See the Lights ' by Simple Minds-Colin Ward
I will keep requesting that y’all need to check out The Unforgettable Fire (original video version) and Bullet The Blue Sky (live Rattle and Hum version) both have Bono with long hair lol.
Great reaction to a great band, Jay and Amber. Other tracks by them to react to, "New Year's Day", "Pride (In The Name of Love), "With or Without You", "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For".

Anything from their Zoo TV Ive in Sydney 1993. U2 is my favorite band. 90s U2 is my favorite U2. Bono's singing is at it's best in the 90s. His wicked falsetto and in Achtung Baby each has a different character singing it. And Zooropa is an amazing album too.
Hi guys, this was a beautiful song from U2, maybe one of the softest for me. I really liked the U2 songs which had a lot of power in their music like three songs that you haven't yet reacted: "Even better than the real thing" and "Mysterious ways" from Actung Baby album and the great "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" from The Joshua Tree album. Best regards from Chile!
There are quite a few Irish references in the video. The guys who jump on the carriage early on are Boyzone, a popular Irish boyband from the 90s (one of the members, Stephen Gateley is sadly no longer with us). Then we see Steve Collins, who was a world champion boxer during the 90s. The marching band is the Artane Boys Band from Dublin, then at the end we see the cast of Riverdance. The video itself was shot on the streets of Dublin.
U2 is absolute fire. I was eleven when MTV first came out and saw their videos Gloria, and I will Follow. Been a fan since. I'm atotal metal guy but they transcend categories. Being irish myself also brings loyalty lol. 🤟🍻
And the group behind in white are Boyzone, another huge group with loads of hits. Check out Their “No Matter What” written by Jim Steinman, also Ronan Keating the lead singer has many solo hits too Apparently this is a note to his wife saying sorry for something he did😉😉
The lady in the beginning of the video is Bono’s wife Ali and they are high school sweethearts. Bono wrote this song because he forgot their anniversary. Isn’t she one lucky lady? 😊🤪 I just found your channel and just checked out all of your U2 reactions 😇 They got so many amazing songs as you already noticed and the lyrics are simply fantastic! One very unique song you should try is “Please” it has such a deep meaning behind it. There is also of course “ ONE “, “Kite” “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own “, “ Every Braking Wave “ But probably, you really can’t go wrong with any U2 song
Boyzone in the background in the white shirts were a 90's Irish boy band. Another Irish band worth checking are The Script, try The Man Who Can't Be Moved by them.
This was originally the B-side of "Where the Streets Have No Nane" in 1987, but was recorded for a best of in 1998 and released as this single. The video was directed by Kevin Godley who you know from 10cc and was also in Godley and Creme, a music duo who side gigged as video directors for other artists. The guys in the white suits were boy and Boyzone, the firefighters were Chippendales dancers, the dancers at the end were the cast of Riverdance. Yes, U2 are from Dublin, Ireland.
Jay and Amber been following your channel about a year. Love your honest and true feelings on all your reviews. I can really feel your message. Can I recommend October ( intro) with Bullet The Blue Sky. (Live Concert 2015 Paris). It was an epic performance by U2 which makes going to one of there shows a moving event. Looking forward to hearing your comments. Thank you.
U2 is an Irish band I can't recall if you have reacted to their very first hit in America. The song is called I Will Follow and is from their first album called Boy.
there are some cameos in the video like Bono's wife but also a famous irish boyband of the time (the 5 guys dressed in white) called BoyZone you might also want to check out ("Picture of You", "No Matter What", "I love the way you love me")
Let me fill in a few of the details on this song: Bono wrote "Sweetest Thing" as a belated birthday present to his wife, Ali, after she turned 25. On her birthday (March 23) in 1986, he was working on recording The Joshua Tree album and noticed she wasn't speaking to him. He later realized why: he forgot her birthday. Great reply!! I logged in to write the SAME THING!! Did you mention that that was HER in the video?
I didn’t know she donated the money, that just makes it even more wholesome.

U2 a genuine all-time rock band that is not afraid to experiment with different sounds.
U2 are not a band that only did one musical style. All over the map and great. 'One' is another beautiful song.
Everything in the film clip is something his wife loves.
U2 was the No. 1 band of an entire decade…the 80s….and well into the 90s as well. Any band that dominates an entire decade is unarguably one of the most significant and important bands of all-time.
I am so happy for this! I was a U2head in between being a Rushhead and Deadhead.
U2 "THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE" (original video). 🔥🔥🔥
SHE MOVES IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS--GOOD ONE ABOUT THE MOON👍👍👍👍👍👍
Song written by Bono as an apology to his wife for forgetting their wedding anniversary. He pokes fun at himself in the video because of it😂
It was her birthday he forgot not their anniversary. He got caught up recording their Joshua Tree album and was so focused he forgot.
The Unforgettable Fire by U2 is epic. 👨🏻🚒🚒 🧯
Globally, easily the Biggest Band in the last 30 years --- and it's not even close.
Time to start at U2’s beginning: “I Will Follow” off their first album Boy (1980)
Not a U2 suggestion per se, but in the late 1990s/early 2000s, there was a band out of Ireland called The Corrs. Bono performed a song with them called "When the Stars Go Blue." The harmonies are gorgeous; you should definitely check it out when you get a chance.
I would tell my browned eyed daughter when she was a little girl this was about her and her blue eyed father .She is still his ❤ ar 25 years old.
You guys should do their song "All I Want Is You" next.
This was originally released only as a B side. You can now find it on their Greatest hits compilation.
Streets b side...I prefer it to this "finished" polished version....
Kind of miss those old CD Singles, had this one back when new and agree with you, better than the re-release @@wrldchamps04
They are driving down the street in Dublin and all the 'guests' are Irish. Like Boyzone and the Artane boys marching band etc
When Love Came to Town.U2 with BB King, from Rattle and Hum
Yes now on their Greatest hits , a really smooth and mellow song from U2. I think U2 and Simple Minds were two of the most powerful bands of the 80's and 90's. Check out 'Angel of Harlem' by U2 and 'See the Lights ' by Simple Minds-Colin Ward
So so many more U2 greats to check out xx
I will keep requesting that y’all need to check out The Unforgettable Fire (original video version) and Bullet The Blue Sky (live Rattle and Hum version) both have Bono with long hair lol.
The music video for "Even Better Than The Real Thing" by U2 is awesome! Hope you two react to it.
Camped outside all night for tickets to see U2. They were worth it. Miss those days.
Sweet vibes . One of my favorites by them
Great reaction to a great band, Jay and Amber. Other tracks by them to react to, "New Year's Day", "Pride (In The Name of Love), "With or Without You", "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me", "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For".
They've done most of those already
@@filifoliaThank you for letting me know, I didn't realise that, I omitted the ones that I remembered they'd done, but I didn't know that most of these had been done too.
@@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis. Actually they did 2 of those for sure, Pride and With Or Without You, I thought they did Where the Streets... as well, but no. They should!😄
@@filifoliaHopefully they'll see the list and do some of the ones which they haven't yet, of course 'New Years Day' would be great to start off next year with. 🙂
You guys have to dive into the Achtung Baby album, some serious psychedelic guitars and mad beats!
Anything from their Zoo TV Ive in Sydney 1993. U2 is my favorite band. 90s U2 is my favorite U2. Bono's singing is at it's best in the 90s. His wicked falsetto and in Achtung Baby each has a different character singing it. And Zooropa is an amazing album too.
one of my favorite songs!
This video brings back fond memories of my visit to Dublin.
Bono wrote this song to Apologize to his Wife for forgetting her Birthday one year 🥰💕
i first heard this in 2000 when i was 15 , kept hearing it on the radio while i was on holiday aka vacation
Check out Their “No Matter What” written by Jim Steinman, also Ronan Keating the lead singer has many solo hits too
Apparently this is a note to his wife saying sorry for something he did😉😉
Forgetting her birthday.
The Boyzone performance of No Matter What for Andrew Lloyd Weber's birthday was amazing.
@@ezerlab1 ahh, much better than the affair rumour I’d heard
Great song from a special band. I love Bono's voice. I have seen Bad in your reaction videos. Bad live from Under a Blood Red Sky.
There is also of course “ ONE “, “Kite” “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own “, “ Every Braking Wave “
But probably, you really can’t go wrong with any U2 song
Yes U2 are Irish and this was filmed in Dublin , in this video was his wife Ali , Boyzone , Riverdance and many more .
"Still Haven't Found What Im Looking For" by U2 is somewhat an "Anthem" of theirs. And a "Banger"
Not a huge U2 fan but this one has always been my favorite of theirs.
Great one ❤🎉 If you haven't done Mysterious Ways, you've GOT to 😊
My favourite part is when Larry puts the halo on Bono’s head (ie. he is an angel)at the end of the video. Soooo Bono.
Check out U2 - New Years Day! .....Another older Awesome song!
Yay! My favorite U2 song!
Check out I still haven't found what I'm looking for.
Boyzone in the background in the white shirts were a 90's Irish boy band.
Another Irish band worth checking are The Script, try The Man Who Can't Be Moved by them.
❤U2❤❤❤
U2 is a whole journey and you have barely begun :)
Beautiful day and sometimes you can't make it on your own are very cool as well
Personal favourite ( as if you could pick just one) is from Joshua Tree - Running to Stand Still
From Rattle And Hum you have to listen to U2 doing Desire
there are some cameos in the video like Bono's wife but also a famous irish boyband of the time (the 5 guys dressed in white) called BoyZone you might also want to check out ("Picture of You", "No Matter What", "I love the way you love me")
Man! takes me back to the sweet 90s ❤😢
