For millions of years different countries throughout Southeast Asia have eaten fertilzed duck egg, but not until now are we able to compare two duck lovers, each in their home turf. In the Philippines they call it Balut and in Vietnam, it's known as hột vịt lộn. Today I try both as they go head to head leaving you to decide which is best. Ready? Go!

I'm Vietnamese but was raised in the US and over here, whenever my family eats those duck eggs, we eat them in a similar fashion to Filipinos but instead of salt and vinegar, we dip it in a mix of salt, pepper, and lime and then chase it with the herb. I have honestly never even heard of the tamarind sauce thing.

rFsinTheta It is another way of cooking and serving baluts. They also cover them in batter, deep fry them, and serve them with a special fish sauce. These recipes are out there, aka in Vietnam, for at least 20 years. People come up with new ways to cook the same ingredients all the time.

I love how she kept reminding you to eat that herb (Vietnamese coriander) together with everything because herbs are really important in Vietnamese food. I'd like to believe our choice of herbs for each specific dish was a product of hundreds/thousands of years of experimentation. The right choice of herb enhances or brings out the taste of the main ingredients even better. And of course wrong choice of herbs also destroys the taste. Anyways, Vietnamese balut is eaten with salt pepper and Vietnamese coriander like that quail egg you ate in the video. I just love how simple it is, yet it made it so much better than eating it plain.

it's okay no herb for Pinoy dishes. but mostly Philippines dishes have no green leaf veggies too.
Honestly i can eat one meal, two meal or couple day without veggies
But for a whole week, whole month no veggies, no veggies soup in the dishes im about to die of tired & bored lolz 😂
i'm Vietnamese, i think Philippines should add more green veggies in their food. They eating too much rice and powder food (potatoes,etc..), meat but less green salad & green soup!! this is about true facts, nothing hateful or racist here
before Philippines at alots rice, meat without veggies but 20-40year ago the country is still poor so alots people is walking exercise so people still fit & good healthy.
but can't compare to today, while philippines growing economic, more motorcycle, public train,et.. no excercise, less walking, eat alots of rice & fries potatoes as veggies & meat in everyday dishes, it cause alots unhealthy people, heart problems & diabetes!

We tried the 14 day balut from a cart in Manila by Eco-Park and that was the by far the most disconcerting thing to look at but actually is amazingly tasty. @@alexarmanto2986 Same here in Vietnam my friend. Just because we use Vietnamese coriander for balut doesn’t mean we always eat it with it all of the time. Sometime a simple salt and pepper is enough to eat it. We only use Vietnamese coriander for it if it gets too bland and boring. The coriander add an extra kick to make it much more exciting to eat.

@james bailey, it's pretty old in the Philippines. If you've ever encountered a balut vendor, ever realize that he's shouting a second word? The traditional cry is "balut, penoy". The second word, "penoy" refers to that unfertilized custardy egg which is incubated then boiled. The duality is there, because some Filipinos do not eat balut, so penoy is a perfectly viable option, similar taste, without the duck embryo.

It only differs from the way they sort it out, I've found a video on how they distinguish a Balut from a Penoy. They do this during the 5th day of the duck egg to segregate to Balut from the Penoy. The Filipino Balut was meant as a quick energy pickup back in the old days. Pick your choice of plain salt and/or add vinegar. Then came the spiced up vinegar sauce. Recently it’s been introduced as a dish adobo style or a drunkard’s Sizzling Sisig plate. I’m all for eating a variety and will more than likely enjoy the Vietnamese version also. Yummy! 👍🏼😂🤣

And in Vietnam, balut is just a snack, usually eaten my yourself or share with family. Traditionally, we eat the egg with a side of lime juice mix with salt, grind peppercorn, and sometime minced pepper with Vietnamese coriander (the one you see use in the video)

Even in this simple streetfood comparing the two countries, I can see why other Asian countries beat the Philippines when it comes to food presentation and a wider and more varied use of herbs and spices. I would definitely like to go beyond eating Philippine balut by savoring the different Vietnamese version.

Balut is best eaten by different nationalities in their own ways. Only a foreigner not used to balut can say which tastes better (which is of course subjective based on his/her preference). I just want to add that Pinoys also cook balut in Adobo form. We also cook it kwek-kwek style.
