  • Maharlika is a restaurant in Manhattan's East Village that sells one of the strangest foods you can buy in New York City. It's called balut, and it's basically a hard boiled egg with a partially formed duck fetus inside.
    We learned how to properly eat a balut from Maharlika owner Nicole Ponseca, and then took some back with us to the Business Insider offices to see how our co-workers would react to eating the balut.

      There are way more Filipino food like sisig, banana cue, kaldereta, dried mangoes, chicharron, lumpia, etc. that we can offer to our visitors especially foreigners (not just balut, that most Filipinos don't eat). I get it, balut is part of our culture (especially in rural areas) but it doesn't help in promoting our cuisine. In result, ignorant people are stereotyping. This balut trend needs to stop. Most Filipinos don't even eat it.
      "When the only representations of your culture available are negative, it’s no surprise if some Filipinos internalize all that shaming."

Neufeld but it is just a novelty. its also patently disgusting. i know phillipinos that were raised there that have never even heard of this crap and will not eat it. you can eat disgusting shit anywhere, like pig intestines aka chitlins, or sheep testicles, aka prairie oysters, here in america. it doesnt make it anything more than an oddity that only a select few people eat. just because people once did something out of desperation doesnt make it desirable, traditional, or healthy.

    I used to keep a trio of ducks, and sold their eggs to a local Vietnamese market/restaurant. It was fairly rare, but every now and then the owner would request a batch of balut. I feel awful for what I did to those ducklings, even though the pay was good. But if anything makes up for it, know that the adults were very happy birds, who were treated more like family pets than livestock. They lived out their entire lifespan, and passed away gently from old age.

    Balut sa puti ( pronounced as bah-loot sah pooh-tee) is the best kind of balut because it has richer taste and more succulent juice. From here in the Philippines especially in Pateros. A typical sized balut is about three inches in length. A "balut sa puti" on the other hand was a bit smaller and the duckling wasn't that visible as it was still wrapped inside its yolk. It was 14 to 17 days old from the moment it was hatched until being steamed/boiled prior to selling it to the market. The typical balut was 18 to 21 days old and the duckling was more developed and visible when you cracked open its egg. The latter was a preferred choice by many balut afficionados here being sold warm by balut vendors in their rattan baskets walking down the streets at night time shouting
    "Baluuuuutttt...Pennnnoooyyyy...Baluuuutttttt!!!" These folks are friendly. Some of them also sell crunchy "chicharon"
    One of the best balut experience one can have is on the busy sidewalks of Manila where Filipino street foodies are located. Currently, one balut costs about fifteen pesos or roughly around thirty-five cents (US$) . For those who doesn't know, there's another egg thats an alternative to balut and it's called penoy (pronounced as pen-oi) which has no duckling in it yet and looked similar to a boiled chicken egg. Penoy tastes like the yolk found inside balut and paired nicely with salt and vinegar like the balut.

      In the Philippines, we have 2 ‘types’ of this balut - 16 days and 18 days. In a 16-day old balut, the duck embryo isn’t fully formed like that yet, at least in my experience and sometimes, you don’t even notice it that much so everytime I eat one, I prefer the 16-day balut.
      The 18-day balut, however, they’re sometimes hairy and you can already see its head. I personally avoid those ones.
      Although, all the baluts that I’ve eaten don’t look exactly like the one in the video if that makes sense. It’s so formed and bigger which would make me not wanting to eat it too.

    How I eat Balut: I crack out the egg, I place it into the bowl (TRY TO GET MOST OF THE DUCK LIQUID INTO THE BOWL) then simply enjoy the dish. Most Western people say it's "yuck" due to them not drinking the delicious duck juice that you eat with, and also you should eat everything else first before eating the yolk. Well, That's how I eat Balut.

    Some of the comments scare me. How can some people not know what is happening in their own country in regards to battery farms, mass slaughterhouses, animal testing and cruelty all happening in their own countries? It boggles me. They are either kids or do not see the world past their four walls. Also, most of those making ignorant comments seem to be Americans who do not know how to spell... Interesting. Just an observation.

    • @shaunhumphreys6714
      @shaunhumphreys6714 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      well, because people dont see those places. they are all behind closed doors. aless someone selectively chooses a documentary on slaughterhouses or battery farms ot animal testing, they won't know about it. usually after watching such a documentary there is an emotional reacion and the viewer will temporarily stop eating meat. But then the effect wears off. There's a massive distance between the meat industry-the breeding and butchering of animals and the consumer. i have a massive problem with industrial fishing and animal farming. It is the inhumane industrial level of it that effects me. if im an ancient farmer, and i kill and have my wife cook an animal for the family to eat, that's normal and fine, just as fishing with a small net for one's own family is. its the industral level that is immoral. we have for one hundred thousand years since being modern humans, and humanoids date back one million years, eaten meat. so there's nothing immoral about that. but the greed and the conditions animals are kept in with modern industrial methods is horrible.and anyone seeing them should not want to eat meat now. incidentally getting rid of cattle farming would have a big effect on easing global warming.

    You need salt, pepper, paprika and lime juice, then it's delicious (and eat it warm of course)

      Yep eat it while it's hot with the right condiments. It's kind of like eating raw oysters, but it's cooked. Of course it doesn't taste like oyster but that's not the point.
