This is a war vet who has PTSD. PTSD can cause severe insomnia due to neurophysiological changes in the brain stem and hippocampus. He doesn't get "zero" sleep, he likely microsleeps or has absence seizures to compensate for the amount of time perceived awake. I have a similar condition and often go 4-5 days without sleep, only to catch 3 hours and start the cycle all over again. You wake up run-down, exhausted, miserable - combined with the alcohol, he's probably got nutritional deficiencies as well. It's heartbreaking, and being treated like a creature or an anomaly isn't helping.

I didn't sleep for almost 12 years and most of it was from a traumatizing past. it was normal for me to get 2 hours of sleep every two weeks. was horrible. I drank like a fish and they gave me tranquilizers and I still was awake. they wanted to do a case study on me as I had extreme insomnia. which later brought on early MS they say my insomnia years brought it out super early. I now sleep and don't miss not sleep. it was a horrible experience. half the time you are run down and even when you function your mind isn't all the way aware. although i did get a lot accomplished it really jacked me up. PSTD is a real thing.

It is an amazing story but it can not be true. 0:20 There have been others who have claimed that they do not sleep. When those people have been observed in a dream lab it has turned out that they all sleep in shorts intervals. Also all animals sleep. I once attended a lecture on the importance of sleep. The lecturer was an expert on the subject. He told us that people who say that they never sleep are wrong. Some of those people are attention seekers and others wake up time and time again having slept only a few minutes. The people who sleep only a few minutes at a time do not have a sensation of having been sleeping. They can be utterly convinced that they have not slept at all.

This is definitely severe insomnia caused by PTSD, unfortunately it's not that uncommon actually. He likely experiences 'micro-sleep' quite often (this lasts only several seconds to minutes typically), he said he is able to sleep for about 2 hours if he drinks enough alcohol to stop thinking, that confirms that it's directly PTSD related. He likely developed a fear of sleeping/being unconscious during the war.
I personally have experienced a full week of no sleep several times because of my own PTSD, the only reason I was unable to sleep was fear, any time I'd get close to sleeping even the smallest sound, movement or thought would have my heart jumping out of my chest, for that reason I started preferring to keep myself busy at night.
The fear that's keeping you awake with this kind of PTSD is either the night terrors experienced when sleeping or the fear of a repeat of your traumatic experience. In my case it was mostly fear of someone coming into my home to commit violence on me as that is what happened to me.
I still am an insomniac, though I've had some improvement, I feel really bad for this man because I know how exhausting and uncomfortable it is to sleep this little for extended periods of time.
In reality this man probably knows exactly why he can't sleep but it's too painful to confront head on himself, so he copes through addictions and distractions, it is typical severe PTSD.

I don't think the war plays any part in his sleep problem, it was a long time ago, assuming he is 80 years old and even fought in the war, he offered no proof he served in the army and no evidence was presented to establish his age. His sons look remarkably young for a guy 80. How old are they, no older then 22-27? Look at the age of his wife. It doesn't add up for a couple that old to have such young children.
It's much more likely his sleep problem is caused by the constant amount of sugar he's consuming in the rice wine (reinforced by the fact he barely eats) that is over-stimulating his brain. Add to that he's clearly a chronic alcoholic, drinking 50-70% proof rice wine like its water all day long. Alcohol is extremely toxic to the organs, and has almost certainly damaged his brain and liver at this level of consumption over an extended period.
He clearly has a very very high tolerance to alcohol if he can drink 1 litre of this stuff and be fine. That would be enough to put the average person out of action for several days, and in some cases might even be a lethal blood level of alcohol, depending on the amount of alcohol in his home-made rice wine, which could be higher than 70% proof. German alcohol made from potatoes is typically 70-90% proof, much stronger than vodka or whisky. Even drinking a bottle of whisky or vodka a day for years would severely damage your liver, brain and other organs.
He's been slowly poisoning himself over a long period. It's more a miracle that he's even alive, and in such good shape, ad not severely ill or even dead,. Remarkable he's able to get by with the occasional nap and just laying down to rest, and still able to function and do work every day, even despite this level of alcohol poisoning on his body.
I'd love to see some MRI scans of his liver and brain to see how extensive the alcoholism damage is by doing blood works on him to measure his blood sugar level and assess his liver function. It does raise some interesting scientific inquiry into what's different about Asian cultures, and factors like healthier diets, low-stress lifestyles, compared to the West, which reduces the risk of diseases and promotes healthier old ages in their countries compared to ours.

But I disagree with the time limit on a severe untreated mental health disorder. The evidence with the attack on his hand could produce enough trauma to effect someone for life, so if the war stories are true as well...I would add PTSD to the equation as well like mentioned in the vid.

Then an American comes and after everything he’s been thru he still extended his hand greeted you with open arms gave you a place to stay and fed you and never cared where you came from an laughed at the fact that American people had a hand in what altered his life. This dude has the biggest forgiving loving heart there is and this shows me I got a ton of work to do on my self. WOW. The internet has changed the western world in the worst way possible, and all it does is stoke the egos of all these desperate, annoying, lonely kids and young adults. Now everything is about how much flashy bling you have, going to nightclubs half naked, doing drugs, money money money, sex, shooting or hurting people you don't like, suing someone because they looked at you funny, destroying English with street slang, the list goes on. People that live in places like this man haven't been exposed to and brainwashed by the same things the rest of us are. It was a non-stop nightmare for me. I couldn't end the memory tape replaying. Finally a spiritual mentor/older friend told me I did everything I possibly could to remedy the situation. That could be zolpidem like you mention, but those never did anything for me, so he'd probably want diazepam or something on top to help with alcohol withdrawal (sleep is impossible when you're borderline delerium tremens). There is a disorder call Fatal Familial Insomnia, but it is only known to affect people from a small town in Italy and their descendants. I think he is on to something about PTSD from the war. Extreme insomnia is known to be a symptom. The thing is, there is a reason for the name of the Italian disorder. It is ALWAYS fatal from the lack of sleep. He may experience what is known as microsleep, which can occur with the eyes open. I'd be interested to know if this occurs. When he drinks a lot of rice wine and believes he is sleeping, he most likely is not. He has just passed out, which is not technically the same as sleep. He might get some of the benefits from a mild sleep, but it may actually do more harm than good. It would make this post WAY longer to explain why. I feel for the guy. The fact he is still in good spirits says a lot about this man's strength, as well as who his family is. They seem like good people.

@@mathewaitken938 I believe you are correct about that. I think heard of them as well. I know I heard about siblings suffering from it, which was of interest to those studying the disorder. Those that suffer from it live all over the world. Their genealogy all tracks back to the same town in Italy, but they do not all live there. It comes from a genetic issue. If I am remembering correctly, as it has been a LONG time since I have studied it, it is a protein mutation that it is attributed to; but don't hold me to that, as I could be thinking of another disorder. I studied these in college a little over 20 years ago.

The part where he sat on the side of the bed and looked like he was thinking hit me pretty hard. That's what I do sometimes. I was in the Iraq war 03, and 05, diagnosed with PTSD in 04, found out I have Bipolar II disorder about 3 years ago. I was an opiate addict, and a lot of times I couldn't close my eye's and sleep unless I was loaded. Even now I have been sleeping in my computer chair for almost a year now. My bed is full of my clothes. The reason is when I lay down I feel like i'm dying, and I jump back awake. The fear that hits me is so hard I just ended up staying awake. So now I just stay in my computer chair, and if sleep comes, then it comes. I don't try to have a schedule anymore though. This is the first time i've ever talked about it.

And also, He doesn't want you to go to Hell, but He wants you to go to Heaven with Him but you have to be Saved. How do I get Saved you might ask? Here are the steps below on how to get Saved!
      1. Believe that God sent His Son
(Jesus) to die on a cross for your sins and that He rose again from the dead 3 days later.
      2. Confess to Jesus that you are a sinner and ask forgiveness for your sins and Turn away from your sins. If you sin again after asking forgiveness of that sin, ask forgiveness again and try not to do it ever again. Jesus will forgive you!
      3. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and your life and for Him to be your Lord and Savior forever.
      4. Build a Personal Relationship with Jesus by Praying and Reading the Bible daily and Live for Him Forever.
