The 7mag is my pick. I don’t know exactly why (I think it had something to do with drop of comb, wooden stock, balance of weight, etc.), but I sold the only 300 Win Mag I ever owned because it kicked like a mule and was just way overkill for whitetail hunting here in AL. The recoil on that rifle - a Browning A-bolt “Hunter” with a wooden stock and blued finish - was so brutal that I couldn’t keep the scope rings tight on it. I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t get a decent group, then figured out my scope was wiggling! I’d torque it back down and it would happen again after a few shots. I have a 7mm Rem Mag in a Remington 700 (stainless/composite) and its recoil is very manageable. I don’t notice any difference between it and my old wooden stock Rem700 in .270. I’m 6’2, 230, but I had my shooting shoulder basically rebuilt about 23 years ago. I can still shoot anything (at least that I know of up to a 12 ga. 3 1/2” mag turkey load), but I have to make sure it’s positioned just right! Enjoy the videos. God bless.

7mm magnum is great with a 175 grain Nosler Partition for moose and timber elk hunts. Sectional density makes the 7mm easier to shoot. 160 grain 7mm bullet has the sectional density of the 180 grain 308 caliber bullet.

I personally have always leaned towards the .30 cals, I am even planning on having a custom 300 WM built. However the more older or mature I get, I am seeing more clearly now that not one single deer, elk, moose or anything for that matter has ever known the difference when shot by either of those fine rounds. Keep them coming WhoTeeWho!

I have both and love both of them. Been hunting with them for years. General observation, 7mm mag is easier on the shoulder. Both are tack drivers. 300 WM has more loading possibilities due the abundance of different bullet types and weights in .308 cal. I will definitely take a close look at the new Core Lokt tipped rounds. Looks like a major improvement. Great video. Keep up the great work.

    Bear country
    Either one
    7mm mag - sniper rifle
300win mag - Anti material rifle
    Shtf scenario
    300win mag = a nato rd
    Law enforcement rd
Usually readily available in gun stores
7mm mag - low recoil , shooter fatigue doesn’t kick in as fast
300win mag - has more recoil , Recoil may affect the accuracy depending upon your scenario

    Great video once again!
I have been using the 7mag for over 40+ years.
Deer Elk Moose .( One moose out to 510 yards ). I really don’t recommend anyone shooting past 400 even though the cartridge is capable most of us humans are not. I have been using the 160 Swift Aframe for the past couple years they are great.I am very impressed with the accuracy and terminal performance and little meat loss.
I’m not a bear hunter but if I was I would probably go with the 300 WM. With a 180 or 200 RN or partition bullet. Even though the 7mag with the 175 partition and RN would do a great job out to 200 .

Used both great cartridges, believe it or not I'm a fan of the OLD .300 H&H Magnum in a .30 Magnum, classic. The 7mm Magnum either Remington or the Weatherby version are excellent. If after game like the large bears (myself would go with a larger caliber) and all I had was either a 7mm or .300 Magnum, I would go with the .300 and 200 to 220 premium bullets. You absolutely right at 100 yards I would rather use my 7x57. The magnums are better at distances, and you could do well with either the 7MM Magnum or the .300 Winchester Magnum. Myself and I'm a pretty good game shot, yet would likely not take a shot at over 300 yards, favoring closing on the animal which is the most important part of hunting for me. Great analogy video between the two cartridges.

There was a time, back in the early 1990s, when folks in our part of South Carolina felt that the 7mm was over kill for deer at what were considered "normal" ranges of 100 to 200 yards. then came a preponderance of clear cuts brought on by companies that provided lumber to the housing market. Suddenly ranges jumped up to 300 to 400 yards and rifles chambered in 7mm replaced older rifles chambered in .30-30, 35 Remington, .243, .270, .308, and .30-06. And then along came the .300 Win Mag to basically make the older calibers obsolete in the minds of many. Having said all that, when the .300 Winchester SHORT Magnum started showing up around here mayhem ensued and many basically friendly arguments about which caliber was superior broke out. Oddly enough, those afore mentioned "obsolete" calibers just kept on taking deer and hogs like they always had. Since I hunt in areas that could best be described a medium to heavy cover, I stick with lever guns with the largest caliber being .444 Marlin though I do own a Savage 99E in .250-3000 (she is an old one, but I love her) and another in .308 Winchester for what, for me at least, are stands providing "long range" shot probability. One of my best friends owns a small collection of bolt action hunting rifles ranging from .243 up to .300 WSM and has harvested many a deer and hog with each of them.....But he is in the market for a Marlin .35 Remington for those under 200-yard shots where thumping and brush busting are called for....By the way mine is not for sale but I will probably leave it to him in my will.

The South Carolina Department of Wildlife (or whatever the Game Commission is called there) did a study about 20 years ago, the purpose of which was to determine if any of the common deer hunting calibers showed differences in killing power. They found no noticeable differences between .243, .257, .277, .284, and .308 caliber rounds.

I have both and by far the 7mm Rem mag is more comfortable to shoot. But, I enjoy shooting my 300 Win mag as well. Of the deer I have shot with my 7mm they have been under 100 yards and fell right where I shot them, no tracking necessary. I did kill a nice 5x5 elk with a 7mm mag and at 200 yards it preformed lights out with 160 grain Sierra game kings, again no tracking. In the end it's what you are going to hunt and the range you are going to be shooting, either of these up to elk will excel. Pick your favorite that you shoot best and match the bullet to the game. In the past, I haven't like the Core-Lokt bullets. They haven't grouped the best for me. In fact, it seemed to me that I had the same problem with any soft tip bullet. Here was my theory, if I dropped the bullet or it hit something on an angle, the soft tip deformed. When I went to shoot, with the tip going off to Jones, i the bullet didn't fly straight, and I could never get the bullets to group well.
I have a Christensen Mesa in Rem 7mm and it loves the Core-Lokt Tipped bullets. I have found other bullets that shot well, but not as good as these tipped bullets. I have never been able to shoot 1/2" MOA, but this gun and the Core-Lokt tipped bullets do it consistently.

Great discussion. I think what is beginning to become the most important consideration in this discussion of high BC bullets is the resulting higher maintained velocity. I prefer to use copper bullets (TTSX. CX, LRX, rtc), which need all the velocity they can get to expand. High BC bullets allow for less initial pain inflicted in terms of recoil, in lighter chamberings like 6mm CM, but still allow for great maintained velocity out to 4-500 yards. I’m a 300 yard guy personally, but like having the option.

I run the 28 Nosler. Since I've gotten into reloading and learning more about ballistics, I pretty much stick to 6.5mm-7mm loadings. Those seem to be the most efficient bullets. I opted for the 28 Nosler to avoid the belted case. Sectional Density and wind deflection are the major considerations in hunting.

@russellkeeling4387 Because I reload. When sizing your brass, the shoulder gets resized properly. There is no way to reform the belt, which severely limits the number of times the case can be reloaded. Being able to re-use the brass case is the major savings in reloading.

Hell, I've shot the same rifle for over 40 years and so far, it's done everything I've ever asked it to do. I bought a Remington Model 700 in 30.06 back in the 70's and it far exceeded anything that I expected. I don't load my own ammo because factory loads will do anything that I need to do. Although, I am going to buy a few boxes of those Core Lokt Tipped cartridges, if they're in stock. There seems to be a shortage of the most popular rounds on most people's shelves. My sister called me from New Mexico just yesterday, asking if I could pick up some ammo for them since the stores stay sold out all the time. So I'll look for her too while I'm there. But I'm not going to look at other rifles while I'm in the store.

    • @russellkeeling4387
      @russellkeeling4387 ปีที่แล้ว

That's the problem with this video. He uses bullets that are light for both rifles. The 300 win. mag. will shoot heavier bullets than the 7mm mag. at higher velocity. The heavier bullet of the 300 gives it a higher BC and more mass for higher energy at distance. The 300 will shoot a 220 grain bullet as fast as a 7mm will shoot a 160 grain bullet. I don't see any reason to have a magnum caliber rifle if you're going to shoot light bullets that can be launched from almost any caliber cartridge. To me magnum means long range energy.

My dads trying to decide between 7 mag which he has used for the past 30 years and what I use now but we shoot 140 grain Nosler partition and have dropped multiple deer 300 yards plus. But federal has stopped making 140 grain partitions but the 300 win mag can shoot a 180 grain with almost the exact same ballistic data as the 140. Think he’s gonna go with with the 300 strictly just because of ease of finding multiple factory loaded bullets. Glad my independent research was matching up with what you also found.

    Lol at the caliber snobs.
Growing up in Colorado when a kid, my dad and uncles took more elk than you can imagine with a 308. Not to mention mule deer.
As a grown up, a 308 has all I've ever hunted with and I have never not been able to bag everything that I've shot.
It's funny in Texas, where I live now, how many of these super hunters think they need an 06 or bigger to climb a tree stand to shoot a deer they've been feed all year.

We dressed it out and always keep the heart.... the bottom of the heart was split🤔 about a four inch Crack right along the bottom and could have only been the pressure rise through the blood vessels. No guff

Unless I was hunting in Grizzly bear country I choose the 7mm rem mag. The 300 win mag with a 210 to 225 grain bullet is a definite advantage in energy over the 7mm. Pushing close to 4000 ft lbs at the muzzle, according to some of the numbers I've seen. 7mm rem mag recoil is only a touch more than a 30 06 with comparable wt bullets. I have a Weatherby Vanguard2 in 7mm rem mag and love it.

As an avid reloader, not too much a fan of the big magnums. I rarely take a shot at more than three hundred yards. Besides prairie dogs, I shoot cans and paper. That said, I own the 7mm win mag in case I need to hit something large, or past 400 yards. I can shoot my 7mm08 almost twice as much with the same amount of powder. Twice as much fun at the same cost.

I've had both the 7mm rem mag and the .300 win mag. I've shot both a lot and the difference I noticed between my two rifles was my 7mm kicked less than my .300. Both were very accurate as long as did my part. I only hunted with my .300 win mag though I sold the 7mm shortly after I got it, I figured I didn't need two magnum rifles. I've got a .338 win mag now and I bought it because I wanted something that could reach out to 3 or 400 yards and still have a fair bit of punch to it. Where I live in Northeastern BC Canada we have an open season for Bison and I wanted something with a little more horsepower than my old .358 Winchester.

Nice job on your presentation! To you point it is all in the math and personal choice & use. If lower BC you have to have enough velocity to off set the higher BC bullet. Why 6.5 are so popular at 1000 yards. 300 Win Mag is more available. 7mm has less recoil. I own both as well as 7mm Wby Mag and 300 Wby Mag. I had an Outfitter in NM turn me own to Federal Terminal Ascent Bullets. 7mm 155 has a BC of .586. 30 cal 200 has a BC = .608 & 175 BC = .520. These bullets are tough to enough to kill elk etc. Back in the day the 7mm Remington Magnum eased it reputation on the range with a 168 GR Grain Match King Hollow Point. My favorite if you can take the recoil is the 300 Wby Mag. There is a very good reason why it is their “1 selling cartridge.

I got an experiment idea. I've been looking around and can't find much information.
The idea is hand loading 300wm and 30-06 same powder&bullet type and weight to 30-06 specs. Would they perform the same with same barrel length?
Then 300wm and 308 hand loaded same powder, bullets to 308 specs.
Then 300wm and 30-30 hand loaded to same 30-30 specs.
Then maybe 300wm and 30 carbine. To 30 carbine specs.
Would there be must different in velocity and energy with the experments?? I'm curious. Too much empty space in the case??

That's not true. The 300 mag. is higher velocity and shoots just as flat if not flatter. For many years the 300 Weatherby mag. was known as the flattest shooting rifle made. The 300 mag. will shoot a 200 grain bullet as fast as a 7mm will shoot a 160 grain bullet thus giving the 300 a better BC and much more mass.

One thing you might want to consider incorporating into your videos is the data from where the bullet falls below say 2003 per second. Each individual bullet has a working range of velocity where it will expand. Drop data for beyond that range it's just hitting the target and probably won't do much expanding. Glad to see the chronograph in your videos thank you
