  • 1997 GOLF DRIVER Vs 2019 GOLF DRIVER: (22 YEAR TEST)
In this video Ali tests the Callaway Biggest Big Bertha from 1997 against the Callaway Epic Flash driver from 1997. With driver innovations being enough for a new driver every year just how well does an old 1997 driver perform against the new 2019 driver.

I had the callaway biggest big Bertha in 8 degrees as a kid and loved it.

It's interesting, but when Biggest Big Bertha was released not only was it massive looking it was also incredibly more forgiving that the steel headed drivers of the time. The flight of the ball with BBB was much higher than steel headed clubs too. That meant more carry and less roll. That was a game changer too. An interesting comparison would be the BBB with something like a vintage Taylormade Burner from a similar time.

Very interesting. I picked up golf 13 months ago and started with an old Great Big Bertha 2 (10deg) driver. After 9 months was averaging 210 yards on drives. Two months ago, upgraded to a new Mavrik Max driver and now averaging 235 yards. Did it help lower my scores? Nope. Working on my short game did that. But, I sure feel a lot better when I'm walking off the tee. :)

I've just gone from my old Ping G15 driver from 2009 to the Callaway Rogue driver which was released last year. Initial impression is that it goes a little further; but that could be down to it being custom fitted. The biggest difference I'm finding is that it goes much better off heel and toe strikes; it seems much more forgiving.

That is where the new equipment has really improved.

When you look a bit closer to Ali's results the differences are less than he suggested - club head speed was about 2 mph faster with the new driver which would equal to an extra 4-5 yards carry if everything stayed the same. Then there is the issue of the extra c.700 rpm that the old driver got - is that down to the head design or the shaft? I would guess that if you put both clubs with the same shaft on a robot the average carry distance difference might be no more than 10 yards. For me the biggest difference between old and new is forgiveness.
I have tried a similar test with my old Yonex Biam Titanium driver which is c.20 years old against my Epic (shortened shaft to 44.5"). The Yonex looks ridiculously small compared to the Epic and the shaft in the Yonex is hopelessly soft for me but at most there is 15 yards difference in total distance between the two

I left the game in 2000 with injury playing a driver and ball that no matter how well I hit it, my max carry was 245-250 (we have very similar swing speeds). I returned last year as a 50 year old, rebuilt my game and golf bag, and again we have exactly the same swing speeds and carry distances (258-270 carry on average). As you can see from this video, the only real difference in the Driver is Spin - old good drivers were 2900rpms - the new long but playable drivers are 2100'ish - so the ball no longer hits an aerodynamic wall and falls out of the air (and the ball is also at least 50% of the difference as well). Because of these aerodynamic discoveries, the Pros now have to play Par 70 courses that are 7500 yards long versus Par 72 courses that at 6950 yards long. For the rest of the world's global golf hackers, these benefits have accrued to them in the long part of their bag, but since their short game is still the same, most have seen no benefit at all in their scores. There is a small group of better handicappers that have benefited some - and it is that group who chase the new better club dream each year hoping to become a scratch player through technological improvements instead of chipping the ball 2 hours a day.

I think you're pretty spot-on. From my comment further up the thread - I picked up golf 13 months ago and started with an old Great Big Bertha 2 (10deg) driver. After 9 months was averaging 210 yards on drives. Two months ago, upgraded to a new Mavrik Max driver and now averaging 235 yards. Did it help lower my scores? Nope. If you ever come across a Time Machine - Make sure you take a sports almanac with you and lay some big sports bets and don't bother bringing a Biggest Big Bertha back to the future with you. 🤔

Nothing about shafts though which is the biggest improvement over the last 20 years. You need the heads in the same shaft for the same comparison

Same shaft doesn’t perform the same in different heads.

You should have hit a few with the long shaft. That is the real benefit for the user. Maybe 30 yards?

wow. I bought mine from your shop, although it was known as Nevada Bobs back then. Maybe it was your old one! remember paying 60 quid for it, I got the matching 3 wood at the same time, curiously priced at 90 quid. I use the 3 wood to this day.

Ali, what would the results be like with the same clubs but with golf balls from 20-22 years ago? In theory the same results or would that be the case? Can you get your hands on some old Balata golf balls out of curiosity? #interesting

The Biggest Big Bertha kept going straight though, with more consistent distance numbers, compared to the modern club. It was right there on the screen. That's the definition of more forgiving.
I'll take the greater control of the Biggest Big Bertha fairway finder and sacrifice 15 to 20 yards while you distance demons search for your golf balls in the trees and shrubs.
