I think the biggest thing we NEVER talk about when purchasing new clubs is shafts. I used to be a pretty tidy golfer but after almost 20 years out of the game there is a lot of work to do. I have recently had my first brand agnostic paid fitting. What a mind blowing experience. The amount of data you can get these days is phenomenal. I tried to be as deliberately brand agnostic as possible, but shafts played a massive part in which clubs I felt most comfortable with and have subsequently purchased...But shafts never get talked about!

Shafts are almost everything. More important than the club by far.

On that last point, I would say your point about getting fitted for your new driver & making sure that you're gaming a driver that fits your swing & is setup properly for you can make a big difference in your game if you're coming from a secondhand set or beginner full bag type set. I just got my first proper driver recently--a PXG Gen4 0811XF (on closeout since I'm too cheap to spend $300+ on one club) w/ a ProjectX Cypher shaft in Stiff flex & oversized grips--and it has certainly made a big difference in my game off the tee.

I always buy second hand. Currently playing a TM SIM 10.5, with a mint Tour AD shaft. Cost me £250...This was a £700+ club 3 years ago. I love it and have no plans to change. Particularly when I hear all the horror stories about the new Stealth face issues.

Years ago I went into a major golf store and wanted to get fitted for new irons. At the time I was an 18 hcp and the salesman lead to the high end brands and said this is what all the tour pros were playing. I said thanks and walked out and went to the competition where I got fitted for the Ping G20's.

I bought a £170 wilson, NEW, couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo, draw biased to help my slice but no good.
Sold it to my mate, he cut an inch off the length, I borrowed it for 3 holes, hit the fairway each time.....
Ended up buying it back for £40 more than I sold it to him.....
I can't justify paying £450-£500+ but back to the launchpad and going great....😅😅

Since you mentioned a used club being out of the warranty period, it's worth noting that some manufacturers guarantee their products for life.
I own a set of Ping i20 irons that I bought used (from the Callaway pre-owned site). Three of the irons have lost the weights in the last two years. Despite my not being the original owner, and despite them being 10 years old, Ping repaired them for free, even paying for shipping.

agree with all you said, I've started playing golf again after around a 20 year gap, I got myself a cheap and cheerful Dunlop driver for £26.99 and compared it to my original driver from 20 years ago, the age difference 14 to 34 I know will make a difference in available strength but when I went to the driving range for the first time the difference in the two clubs was only around 20 yards or so getting in the region of 220-230 yards, on that note I did try a friends brand new driver he got on sale for £200 (cant remember the brand) and my first 3 hits was 241, 256 and 271 yards, after the third hit he told me to give it him back lol

I had the old titleist 905T in your picture, it's maybe a 15 year old driver. Recently moved to a Taylormade Sim2 Max, decided to get new (300) and not the new stealth 1 or 2 (due to the breakage issjes you mentioned) . I can't believe the difference in forgiveness, absolutely amazing! As you say, no point in upgrading every few years, the technology doesn't change. So I'd recommend getting a new driver that's an older model

  • @tylercady3985
    @tylercady3985 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I always try to buy clubs 2-3 years old. I bought by irons and driver brand new, but cheaper because they were older. My irons are Mizuno JPX 921 that I bought for $700, and my driver is a Titleist Tsi2 that was only $350
And while I didnt do a full fitting for my driver, the shop I got it at has a simulator and they were very helpful in allowing me to try it and recommending a different stock shaft that worked better for me.

I bought a new TM M6 because it was on sale as the Stealth 1 had just been released, also the amount of adjustment on my M1 was driving me crazy and wanted a simpler driver that I didnt keep adjusting every 5 minutes... The M6 doesnt seem to go quite as far as the M1 when hit out of the centre but its more forgiving on off centre hits and feel I hit more fairways which you find is way more important than that extra 15 yards off the tee 1 in every 10 drives especially in competition.

Few years back I brought the cobra f8 new upgrading from a second hand ping g25. Cut to 3 weeks ago…. Shaft on my cobra had to be sealed back into the adapter. So had to dust of the ping for a few rounds. Genuinely, it’s still in the bag, and staying. Cobra is up for sale. I’m legit hitting it better, longer than I ever hit the cobra. Finding way more fairways, and having shorter irons in with me shooting 81 for the first time ever last weekend. I don’t know what this means for me and my swing or what to focus on when I do upgrade again but I ain’t letting this g25 go for a while!

Still playing a TM M3(8-9*), adjustability and range time get me where I want. Haven't played as much as I like; but there is a good reason Tiger says it's all feeling in the hands, I've gone from slice to fade to hook based on my grip and have learned a metric ton. I play two iron sets and both are Nike blades, VR pros and Vapor pros; warm weather vs cold. None of these clubs are easy to hit but will make me a better golfer😊

I have countless examples of myself and my friends getting second hand clubs replaced. I had ping Replace a used g400 with a small paint bubble with a G425 max. For the most part brands like taylormade and ping have a 2 year warranty so if you are warrantying a club that came out within the last 2 years... they will usually honor that as.... of course the club is under warranty.

I tried just what this video is talking about. Last year I bought a previous model cobra driver. Still new, and ordered custom from cobra website. I saved $200. However, with my swing I ended up not gaining any performance. I sold the club and got 90% of my money back. My current driver is a 10+ year old cobra fly z. I did better with that and even when new was not a top of the line driver compared to a new top of the line driver.

First of all still enjoying the videos. Prices of top end clubs is ridiculous. Back in January, I went and bought an ex-display Callaway Mavrik Max, which I had a fitting with beforehand. It came with a regular flex shaft but during the fitting it was fitted with a stiff flex with a weight that suited my hard transition swing style all done in store before purchase and it’s all good. Couple of scuffs which you expect that from ex-display but got a great driver that suits and has been fitted for under £170. I am guilty of trying to keep the clubs all one brand but after watching a video Pete done a while ago on Inesis, I thought I’d try one, very pleased with it and now have 3 Inesis 500s in the bag. 2 wedges and a hybrid.

buying the ping 430 lst this year was definitely worth it considering it outperformed every single earlier model, and as a 3 hdc with 115 mph clubhead speed but a high spinrate of over 3k with normal drivers, there is no way i would have bought a later version and felt like i missed out. This driver which i thankfully got over connections at a bargain, i will likely play for the next 10 years

I've just started playing within the last 4-5 months ( I did play as a kid up till about 15-16) but that was 40 odd years ago. I bought some second hand clubs from ebay as starter clubs with the view to buy better clubs when I'm good enough to benefit from them.
I bought a set of Calaway x12 irons for £60 a Taylormade RBZ 5 wood ( dinked and scratched for £25) a Jetspeed HL 3 wood (slightly less dinked and scratched for £25 ) a couple of hours with an airbrush fixed that. And a near mint Mizuno SP630 10.5 with the weight adjustment for £30.
The Taylomade Jetspeed HL 3 wood is brilliant and I hit it straighter and as far as my Driver.
I'm not about to spend 100s on a new driver and fitting but the lure of a Jetspeed 13deg HL driver is beginning to eat away at me.

@@cheemomugdoo799 thought that was obvious, but the shaft can get overlooked by newer golfers - at least that's how it was in my experience. I have never been fitted but have tried a number of drivers off the used market and have found a good fit that way.

@@micahbrown4431 there are several videos on TH-cam debunking the myth that the shaft is the main factor when choosing a driver. For most non-professionals a shaft choice can get you a little extra in certain areas but on the whole it’s not going to be dramatic.

I owned a Callaway Warbird set and had to work quite hard to stop the driver slicing. I bought the new AI smoke and have had to unlearn all of that anti-slice stuff. I've gained 25 yards and confidence off the tee - albeit at a price tag.

The difference in past few years models is theyre fast all the way across the face. If youre hitting it in the middle every time you could use an Original Big Bertha and be fine.

The forgiveness aspect ia what led me to my current driver, a 2016 callaway big bertha fusion... its about the most forgiving club callaway has ever made... it also helped that i found the head for $40 second hand, and had a stiff matrix ozik 7x3 shaft floating around that would fit my swing well... took the gamble and was instantly rewarded with 280yd pretty much every swing, down the middle.... would a newer club give me mor distance? Maybe.... but could it do it dang near every time? Probably not....

In my opinion if you aren’t loaded or almost a scratch golfer find a second hand club at your local golf stores and save 200-300$ but for irons 1000% get fitted for your swing

I been gaming the cobra speedzone for 3 seasons now ....wanted the f9 when it came out ....seemed at time it was all over TH-cam golfer's bags and it is a great driver ...but by time I had the extra cash to buy I found a really good deal on the speedzone 299.99 ....but since I have had a custom shaft built for me half inch longer than 3 wood and carbon fiber weave etc.etc. ....so now I just buy a driver head that fits this shaft .....just ordered a new ltdx still in plastic wrapper for 212 dollars to my front door .....yes its an older model but i hit one liked it a lot ....so I bought one .....who knows may buy an aerojet next season ....but the days of giving 700 dollars plus for new driver are over for this golfer ....just can't see the reason to spend the extra cash to have the latest and greatest as they say .....

Bought the same one last year for €250, it was a demo model of the pro shop. Love that driver. It replaced the Cobra Speedzone which I bought new without a fitting. I hated that driver, awful sound and feel, sliced it every other shot. The Callaway was leaps and bounds better.

Golf clubs are like guitars. Anyone great will be great with any gear. The reverse is also true. I play with a friend who still plays with old ping maple woods and 25 year old Callaway irons. Still a 2 handicap in his late 50's.

9:50 - I agree, but I spent 300 dollars on wedges, and in my defense, they were needed. I had only a 54 degree, so a 60 and a 50 were needed for me, as it was extremely hard to get out of deep bunkers with just a 54, and its hard to get a good distance going soft p-wedge.

I'm new to golf, but not really. After my dad recently passed away, I'm golfing again after 5 years of no golf. Doing great with irons in Par 3s. Averageing+10. I feel like I'm ready to hit a driver again. To add to your point, I consider myself a semi pro fly fisherman and an above average league bowler. 190s average bowling 6 games a week, zero practice. That said, I agree. Likewise, a new flyrod or bowling ball isn't going to help without the basics. I feel like I'm finally there with golf. Wish me luck.

The longest driver I ever hit, was a tiny headed metal wood, with a steel shaft : 320 yards carry!!!!
It was the original Taylormade burner 10 deg.
I've hit many modern drivers, but they all go 275 yards.
    Maybe it's down to aerodynamics?

The saddest thing is golfers spending 500+ on a driver and using the factory shaft. My new driver set me back a grand, why? Because to get the right shaft it was 300 bucks and the Kith x TaylorMade Stealth Plus was expensive. Would I go back? Maybe to a Paradym lol.
