In 1991 I made my first purchase of the War Bird. It’s 2023 and I still hit this club pure. And I’ve been an avid collector of this club. I’ll stop in on some garage sale or thrift store and find these clubs. I’ll never let go of these clubs. The steel clubs have an amazing sound to them. That sound never gets old. Thanks for the video. 👍

I just got back into golf after a 20+ year hiatus and I currently have this in my bag. I have upgraded to all new irons and driver, but I haven’t found a modern 3 wood that I can hit any better than this old Steelhead. I get about 225y carry on average and I find way more fairways with it than my brand spanking new Ai Smoke Max driver.

Thanks Vintage Golfer!! You reminded me of a time when the golf equipment market was not as saturated with "distance" hype marketed to the masses as it is today. Truth is, today companies know very well that distance is sexy and is what sells their equipment. What good is a 280-yard drive when you miss the fairway? I much rather get a tee shot that lands 240 yards in the fairway. To this day I cannot hit those 460 CC drivers without losing the ball most of the time - and don't be fooled... that's most people. Anyhow... today I ordered off ebay a 12 degree warbird driver (the non-titanium version). I want to compare it to my King Cobra Long Tom 2 Wood which is my go to club off the tee. I hit most fairways with that thing... that and my steelhead plus 2 wood with steel shaft and my Ping Tisi Tec 12 degree. I often rotate these three in my bag with excellent results and much lower scores. Funny how all those clubs land me in the fairway most of the time while the people I play golf with look at me with a puzzled look for not using a modern 460 CC driver. They understand why real fast when my tee shot lands in the fairway and theirs does not. They then start the questions and I explain my reasoning. Oddly enough though, there is one exception for me... I mentioned in the Vintage Golfer's video about the Cleveland Launcher 460 that in fact that is the only 460 CC driver that I can hit long and straight. Thanks Vintage Golfer! Keep these great videos coming.

I play a 10-degree GBB titanium Warbird today...I'm not as long as my buddies but I can see mine when it lands in the fairway...I hit first and then we go looking for theirs

The Callaway GBB driver (and Big Bertha irons for that matter) was quite revolutionary for the time and set the pace for things to come. I remember at the time I was playing King Cobra irons and metal woods and could only stare in envy at the Callaway sets that were way more expensive.

Interestingly, progolfers that played through 80s/90s/early 00s all stated they'd prefer to have today's modern ball over the modern driver if told could only have one of those two technologies.

I bought one of these soon after they came out. I paid $450 dollars (Canadian) and that was a discount. I still have it and it still holds up today when I occasionally hit it at the range, beautiful club. They launched really high so mine is an 8 degree

I’m with you on some of your points, but I don’t recall the GBBs being “hard to adapt to” from persimmon drivers AT ALL! I was playing Jr High golf at the time these came out and literally every single person at my country club had one in their bag within a year of their release. In other words, people adapted, and they adapted quickly. I was a believer after hitting one shot. The feel of hitting a titanium driver for the very first time ever was a game changer for me and I actually played varying degrees, from 6° to 8°, of this club into my early college golf days. These heads with the bright red AJ Tech shafts were the rage. Personally, I think it is one of the best technological advancements in golf club history. This was the club that changed the driver game forever.

Picked up a GBB (12 degree) and a BB (11 degree) at my local Roger Dunn shop for $25 each -- both in extremely great condition.
The 11 degree BB is my choice for hitting driver now, I'm hitting it a good 30 - 50 yards farther than my previous driver and it's very noticeable in my game.
The only problem is that it's a very long club -- longer than I'm used to anyways -- so it's a little harder to control compared to my previous driver.
Other than that though, I just need to get more used to it and I can get that 30 - 50 yard buff every time.
I thoroughly enjoy the steel shaft BB 11 degree :)

I love this club so much! The original Warbird was the first driver I lusted after. The look, feel, sound, name, even the headcover. The larger titanium head of the GBB just took it to the next level. I felt like the Biggest Big Bertha lost something though.
Also, the "strong 3" wood was amazing!

The best and most revolutionary driver of the 90's. Bought my GBB in 1998 for AUD750. Played it up until 2015 when I finally upgraded to the BB V-Series, which has the same simple sole design as the original BB/GBB that I still keep for sentimental reasons. There may be marginally better drivers with all the bells and whistles by the other manufacturers these days, but the original Callaway Titanium BB/GBB was a game changer back in the latter half of the 90's like no other golf club has been able to do since then.

I have a Ping G425 Max and a 1997 Great Big Bertha, the Bertha is way more fun to swing and the feel when you make contact is much better. It’s just a really nice club, less distance for sure, but it it much easier to make draws and fades with it.

One of the most legendary clubs ever. And the fairway woods still hold up. I do some wild stuff with my divine 9. One day everything just went up high and did a perfect auto draw. Like it had a mind of its own lol.

I remember my father bought a full set of big bertha irons and woods. even these are quite old, it’s still a pleasure to hit’em. I currently have a much more forgiving 400cc’ish driver but a still carry his big bertha 7 heavenwood which is still amazing. I’m not sure I would replace my driver with a big Bertha war bird, but it would be fun…
What about the « greatest big bertha » which on the same design, was bigger, could be fun to see it in this channel !

While the Great Big Bertha was more important The Biggest Big Bertha was where it was at back then! Man I lusted after that club as junior golfer but at least I had a Warbird sole Big Bertha. My pick for beat 90's driver has to be the 975D.

Both of these clubs are in my garage. Not performance competitive against modern drivers, but they are retro-cool and are fun to take to the range from time to time to channel my inner Hogan. haha
BTW, one of the longest drives I ever saw a player in my foursome hit was done with the Callaway driver you are featuring.

Really enjoying watching all your videos right now (new sub)! I'm already working on my 90's bag which includes my original Tommy Armour 845 Oversize that were my first full set bought brand new to use on the high school golf team. May have to find this driver to go with them. Dad had one and I would borrow it but I had a Nicklaus AirMax driver and fairway woods. Always liked the Callaway better though.

    • @PetSKi67
      @PetSKi67 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It is around 300, about the same size as Taylormade had. The 300 and 320 Ti, and 360 cc models were the toughest rivalry with Titleist 975 back in the day.
I remember the norm being at around 280 and these then revolutionary blobs stretched the envelope to mid 300s and beyond before USGA and Randa decided the max at 440 +5% due to measuring inefficiencies.
