The proper battery will be a biggun'. Haynes manual maybe??? My friend had one of this model at 480,000 miles, still absolutely fine. I know it wouldn’t be very economically viable to do so, but what I will tell you as a 20 year old who’s dream car is is practically exactly one of those. An old Mercedes with the AMG body kit and wheels with a hearty engine. I would never let one of those go and in your specific case that car has christened your new workshop.
    Naturally welding and cutting that whole car to get it back to a good standard would be expensive but I think that would be my dream for it.
    Now I’m destined to drive a 2009 Cat N astra 1.4 as my first car so I’ll watch for hopefully this car to have a long and expensive life. For perhaps a lucky man like myself to drive a similar beast in the future.
    Fantastic video and I’ll look forward for the next one as I always have.

    I looked up the cars/engine on the german wiki, which stated "the ADAC statistics did not view this engine (M103) favorably, due to unreliable fuel pump CU and ignition system". :P
    The 3.2L M103 iirc was only in the AMG 190E.
    For spare parts, there are also some models with M103 engines but M104 Parts numbers, because Mercedes shipped the old engines rebadged, i.E. in the W124 4Matic.
    However, one thing that's very well possible: the engine could have a larger bore. During that period (and keeping in mind the AMG Bodykit) it was very common to tune engines by giving them a larger bore.
    One thing I'd recommend as a "best practise" is checking compression before ordering parts, so you don't end up throwing money at a dead engine.

    • @ruairidh2575
      @ruairidh2575 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Mike, the m103 was also available in the 124 variant as well. The 3.2 litre m103 AMG engine is known as a “baby hammer” In the 190e. I currently own a Ron Stratton AMG built s124 with the m103 3.2 AMG engine. It’s also possible any 80’s and early 90s car could have an m103 AMG as it’s a premerger car they were all built to the customers spec.

    • @MadIIMike
      @MadIIMike 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ruairidh2575 I think we have to differentiate between AMG's Engine for the 190 and tuned engines.
      AFAIK the 190 AMGs engine had different camshafts for more stroke and a larger bore (with pistons, obviously).
      So you could have tuned a M103 to that spec with those parts without it being a AMG engine (with badge and stuff).
      I assume AMG would have sold parts or conversion prior to the release of the 190 AMG.
      That said, it's also possible for Nino's car to have a 3.2L by other means, as AMG isn't (wasn't) the only one offering such parts.
      My point in general was, that he shouldn't rule out having a 3.2L engine, just because it doesn't look like the 3.2 AMG from the outside.

    This is painfully close to what I went through with my -69 w108 280SE, but I tried on and off for 3 years to get it running, until an expert showed up to look at it, poked his head under the bonnet and said "your linkages are out of alignment". He could just see that, and it had been done such long time ago that the threads were sort of rusted/corroded back the way they were so you couldn't tell otherwise. He fiddled for a sec to get it adjusted and it fired up and ran immediately, I had done EVERYTHING from changing pumps and everything in the ignition, read hundreds of forums and no one knew what to do, even several skilled mechanics. I even gave up and redid all the brakes instead.
    But then I could get it inspected and road legal for the first time in 20 years. What a car those old Mercs are! Imagine my relief once it fired, I almost cried 😅

    Nice video, someone should save this old Merc! The cap and rotor arm should be the first thing to check on any Merc with these M103 engines. They are notoriously weak and the parts aren't the cheapest. One thing to check is the dizzy cap cover. The cover cracks causing the metal inserts to collapse and so when you tighten down the cap it gets pulled out of alignment which causes all sorts of misfires and rough running issues. I binned the cover and spaced the cap bolts out with a couple of washers on my W124 260E with an M103, worked great after. Nice to see you have a new cover, Don't over tighten it when you put it on!

I removed all the old solder, used flux and re-soldered the pins and the problem was solved. It had been intermittent up to the point of failure and I would pray it would start. The dry joints were the problem. Great to see you get it going.

    Mercs of that era looked so much nicer than today's models. The 300 CE was awesome looking. Great to see you've gone full time on TH-cam. It's always a pleasure to see someone make it in life through their own hard work. Well done mate. 😊

    Congratulations on the new workshop. Next time you get an old car like this get a can of brake cleaner. Spray in intake and that will tell you straight away what you’re missing. If she runs-no fuel. If she doesn’t-no spark or impulse for injectors on slightly newer cars. That would have saved you tonnes of time. Looking forward to many more videos on this old beauty.

    Firstly congratulations on new workshop. Secondly spark was weak when spark tester was used and I'm glad you have figured it out eventually. Thirdly sell the car as is, that will give it a chance to be restored, hopefully. Once you strip it for parts it will be gone for ever. Good luck in new chapter.👍👍👍👍👍

    It's so amazingly watching your joy. Very thrilled for you.
    Before considering scrapping, sell the car without the kit and wheels to someone who may want to restore it over a few years.
    Contact Matt (High Peak Autos) as he has an R129 with awful wheels.

    A little tip with distributors, the rotor arms can crack and the spark can short to ground via the shaft. To test take cap off and hold the king lead near the centre of the rotor arm and crank over, if a spark jumps to the rotor arm then it’s shorting to ground therefore not being distributed to the cap outputs.

    Working on car compounds in the era of this car we could always tell the sound of a dry engine usually because of no fuel in the tank , there is a subtle note change when the car is fueling.

    As much as I would love to see that car restored given your new workshop and the fact that you are starting out, I would sell the parts and buy a lift etc. you’ll pick up another equally interesting project at a later date anyhow.

    Congratulations mate. Having a unit will give you so much more opportunities. You need a ramp now at an angle on right as you look from door. Then you can have atleast 2 cars to potentially work on at once. Only way is up and forward now🎉
    Keep up the great videos 👍🏻

    Man, its so wholesome watching your videos! Literally gives me the same feeling as M539, you are a natural at this TH-cam thing! I can only wish to be able to fix cars with someone like you. Anyway, since the kit is not original to the car, just flog it, sounds like a no brainer when you can get such money for it all! Then bam, like you say free car, quality content, definitely cant allow this beauty to die!

    OMG I'm so happy for you! Finally a real workshop. As someone working outside all the time I really feel you! If you want to get a lift I can recommend TwinBusch. They have cheap but high quality lifts and they're based in Germany. For the car I would think that if you sell it as a whole barely anyone would rescue that body. So either sell all the parts or get another in tact chassis and replace everything. Third option would be to try bodywork. You now have the workshop to try something like that. 😂

    Please save the car! Those AMG conversions are rare, especially as a 300SE! It seems to have some nice features like the grey leather upholstery, power seats and a sunroof. I didn't pay attention if it has air conditioning but I suppose so. I drive a W126 myself and can help you with addresses for sourcing spare parts (although in Germany). Patch panels and used body parts don't cost a fortune and generally, the M103 straight-six is cheaper and easier to maintain then the M116/M117 V8s that came in the W126. I would consider swapping the grille for an original one with an upright hood star. Also as a matter of fact, your car has to be a 1991 since production stopped that year, maybe the first registration was in 1991. Good luck with the project!
