  • What is toxic leadership? Have you ever dealt with a toxic boss, toxic manager or perhaps a toxic leader? For example, the lead in a group project? The captain or head of your sports team? A supervisor or team Leader at work?
    Toxic leadership creates a toxic work culture of distrust, conflict, anxiety, and fear. If you’ve ever encountered a toxic leader, then it will be easy to understand why it’s so crucial that you try to protect yourself, your mental health and sanity. Sometimes, a toxic work environment might make it harder for us to identify the toxic boss signs.
    The Alliance Against Workplace Violence (AAWPV) has commemorated the month of April as Workplace Violence Awareness Month. Wondering if you're dealing with toxic leadership or a manipulative boss? Psych2Go presents to you the 7 Signs of Toxic Bosses and Leadership.

      This makes me want to report one of my previous jobs if there was a way I could do it. Because about two years ago I was stuck in an office with a bitch who possessed all SEVEN of these characteristics. No one called her out on her shit until I came. She would call me into meetings almost everyday to discuss what she thought i was doing wrong and i would secretly record the meeting on my phone. We would walk out with her having to apologize to me each time. She was the director of the department and the two supervisors would kiss her ass and bitch at us but when she was away they would talk so much trash about her and be grateful she was gone. It got to the point that this bitch would be calling al of us into meetings everyday to shame us and some people started speaking their minds. They all got to keep their jobs for a few more months till they quit but for some reason I was the one who got fired. Its been two years and I wish what had been done to me happened to her. She started having major health problems while I was there and I think its her Karma in some kind of way. If she died, I honestly wouldnt feel sad. I would be happy people no longer have to put up with her big mouth and abusive behavior. I would never write that ab anyone unless they push me there and believe me she took me there. She insulted me daily to the core. Then the next day she would bring breakfast food in the break room and I knew that was her manipulative way of trying to apologize but also make me/other women stay. I was a fool for trying to hang on to my job that long. She fired me a few weeks before Thanksgiving. She would even try to limit our bathroom breaks. She loudly talked ab how quiet I am. “WHY DONT YOU TALK. I NEED TO HEAR YOU TALK.” I would say good morning to her and she would roll her eyes and walk away. She would shame me loudly for asking for help then when i felt embarrassed and didnt want to ask her anymore she would say “WHY DONT YOU ASK ME QUESTIONS.” Shed call me into her office and yell at me so loudly , the IT and accounting departments could hear it. The people in these departments would come over to me later to console me and even the RECEPTIONIST would ask me “what is wrong with y’alls boss?” My anxiety there was so high I developed stomach pains and indigestion. That part of my life makes me so upset. I know i should forgive and move on but she hurt me so badly and I know I always put in a solid effort at work. She messed with my money and my confidence. It was hard telling my family i got fired a few weeks before thanksgiving. I cried so hard i became hysterical. FUCKING BITCH. FUCKING. BITCH. I hope the worst in life comes to her and she loses everything she has just like i did

    Companies should do a psychological test before putting a person in a management position. In the place where I work, my boss is so toxic that it is creating a rift within the company. It is so sad to see a healthy working environment become so toxic because of one person.

      Thanks for the replies. Definitely taking extra precautions and staying safe. Thankfully me and my Housekeeping crew have managed so far staying safe during the pandemic. But as far as this manager I have filed a complaint for not only this response he gave us, but another reason/argument me and him had. He definitely hates being challenged or questioned, which has resulted in retaliation in my case. (He reduced my full time status to part time.) And am currently in the middle of a grievance against him. I'm definitely not quitting without a fight or at least if I get fired I will call him out on his sht.

    • @MamaJ3842
      @MamaJ3842 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m in that situation now. As soon as I was hired, my boss quit and then they fired the third person because the boss who quit didn’t like him and while she was there kept giving him a bad rep. I’ve been there two months and still have not been trained properly. The boss that quit was there one month when I first started and wouldn’t train me. Then even though the third coworker tried to talk to HR and tell them how toxic it is, they still got rid of him. So in the meantime I’m dealing with one pissed off lady who has to cover the other bosses work, doesn’t want to train me so she mean as heck to me. They have absolutely to procedures in place. And others are scared to talk cause they don’t want to get in trouble. It’s a state job and a toxic place cause you have two other managers. One who doesn’t care at alll cause he’s retiring. The other is a narcissist and the deputy director. She’s young, bright, but the one who’s not only pissed off and doesn’t want to train me, but she has plenty of time to screw off and go outside 15 times a day to smoke. A real “I’m the only one who matters” attitude. She should not be management. Behavior is toxic. So, now I’m trying to put applications in while trying to put up with all the abuse. Sucks cause I was really hoping when I started that this job would be good. 😢

      HR is always the partner in this. My organization runs by both 2 biatches. One is the highest Management and the other top HR Manager. Together they suck out our benefits, force leaves, cut salary during d pandemic. There is no empathy, no charitable act for community and employees. I asked HR what has HR done for employees during d lockdown, she said 'e-learning'. Which is not even from her but a program from corporate for employees on a monthly basis. She felt proud by saying its empowerment to me. Well, I will want to show her the empowerment of labor law when we report her and that biatch.

      Good advice. When I first started my current job I had good strong boundaries, even though I knew it was risky and even though I was afraid. Having boundaries at work doesn't come easily because the hierarchical structure isn't set up that way. It's all about obeying and being submissive to survive. Well, anyway. After being at this dysfunctional company for a few years now, my self-esteem has gone down ALOT and I feel I've been beaten into submission. And it all started when I STOPPED standing my ground and holding up my boundaries. Fear set in. Fear of losing the job, fear that I was angering management, fear of coworkers sabatoging me..So I started letting things go, letting things slide. And that is a big mistake. I'm very disappointed in myself that I didn't hold strong because now my job is just a disaster. And if I would have always held my ground, yes, maybe I wouldn't be there anymore. But that would probably be a good thing!

    I once worked in retail management. We were the top performing store in the country for my division. My toxic line manager attempted to micro-manage all of us. I refused to bow down to her toxic ways in her attempts to control me. One Xmas Sales night we had a national TV broadcast from 0400 & late night shopping until 10pm. I worked alone hearing her preach "as a manager we all do extra hours". I was exhausted but refused to give in to her ways. I resigned 4 months later after I was poached by another retail group. After my promotion I realised the freedom that I had gained by leaving that environment.

The other day I lied and said I had cramps pain because one of my supervisors confronted me aggressively about helping in a different section and he was overbearing for the rest of the day and watching my every move and was very controlling and limiting. I felt suffocated, irritated, angry. I went to the restroom and started crying (I literally never cry) and then ended up going home for the day. From all my years of working, I have never left a job early. And the more I talk to my coworkers, they all feel the same way about leadership and want to tear up out of frustration

    • @kristianjensen5877
      @kristianjensen5877 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Introverts can be great leaders - a person's ability to lead is less about personality preferences / types than their being able to take initiative, collaborate and empathize with those they are supposed to lead.
      In fact, introverts can arguably be better leaders than many extroverts as introverts often are very self reflective and therefore have spent a lot of time "weeding out" toxic behavioral patterns and figuring out how to navigate social structures.
      I don't know what you mean, when you say your friends depend on you or what it means with you needing to make things interesting for them, but a simple strategy on improving your group relations with your friends could be to simply ask them and then collaborate on making a plan for achieving whatever goal you agree upon together.
      Ex. if you have a friend and can tell they might be in some kind of trouble, ask them about it, ask how you can help them and then work together on solving the problem - or if you want to make your get-togethers more interesting within a friend group, ask around for inputs as to what people would like to do as a group and figure out a way of making that happen with their help.
      Being a good leader can take many forms, so don't knock yourself if you aren't an extroverted peacock - leadership can be done in way where the people being led aren't even aware of the fact.

    I recently had a leader (line manager) who was indisputably toxic - but only towards me. He decided before our first meeting when he joined the team that he didn't like me, didn't trust me and was going to do everything in his power to force me out. I was his sole target in a team of 8. He was friendly and gregarious with everybody else, but devoted a considerable amount of energy to undermining me, putting me on performance review, issuing formal warnings, generally focussing on a personal vendetta. I still don't know why he was doing this, I had never given him any reason to target me. I can't fill in anything more as litigation against the company is beginning. It's very sad that it has come to this, but he destroyed my self-confidence, micro-managed me, was literally never satisfied with my work output and did everything he could to put me down, while at the same time helping the other team members and lavishing praise on them.

    I used to manage a commercial hog farm, and I have many years of experience across many different aspects of the business. When I ran my farm I had a 0% turnover rate and never lost a single employee the entire time I was there. The crew I hired was the exact same crew that left when we were bought out and I was demoted. Skip ahead two years to today where I am now an average worker for a different company. It's hard not to notice the flaws and inexperience of our manager. He is a micromanager, but he is also very inexperienced. He's very headstrong, but lacks the necessary skills to complement that personality. It is frustrating having to keep my opinion to myself everytime he makes a rookie mistake and nobody is allowed to question him or he will smugly try to explain his logic by twisting facts and opinion to convince you that he's the smartest guy in the room. I've never disagreed with him or told him no, but his incompetence is causing a lot of extra work, long hours, and very minimal results. He knew my experience coming in and I believe he works me the hardest because he's not comfortable with someone more experienced than himself being on his crew. My coworkers are also starting to notice my experience on various jobs and I believe that is starting to make him uneasy. I don't want to be this guy's enemy, but to bring in someone with my experience only to disregard it makes me judge his true potential as a leader. I've been at this place for almost a week and he has taken every chance he's gotten to try and undercut me and try to discredit me in front of people for seemingly no reason. I've had many bosses try to discredit me to make themselves look like a more competent leader, but in those cases they were also competent leaders and dispite our professional rivalry, we always respected and collaborated with one another on a regular basis. I've never wanted to leave a job so fast in all my years in this industry, but I feel personally attacked by this new manager and I'm already not sure what the future holds for me in this company. To hire someone based on their experience just to turn around and disregard any helpful advice they give you as a new manager, is pure ignorance. At the end of they day he has the final say and is still in charge. If you refuse to listen to the experience around you just to flex on your employees or because you feel threatened about your own skills, I'm sorry but that's not what real leaders do. When I was in charge I always covenanted the advice from my past mentors and the experience I had available on the floor. You NEVER disregard a more experienced person. You can tell them you disagree, and you can flat out tell them no, but you NEVER disregard a more experienced person. Real leaders don't do that.

    All of these perfectly described my previous big boss. She was one of the most selfish and stubborn people I ever met. She never listened to us or help in any way when we were short staffed; she just said her catchphrase 'do what you can,' well it's easy for her to say, she wasn't out there breaking her back like we are every night. Now she got promoted, but the damage is already done however.

    That’s exactly what happened to me this whole week. There is constant interruptions in my work and he always tries to tell me what to do and what not to do. And when things don’t work out he puts the blame on me, says it would be „laughable“ that I had the lack of „skills“

    I did hade a toxic-narcissist manager (can't call him a leader since the two words have different meanings), our team done tasks and get the work don't as long as he's not around, but when he arrives the workflow stops, when he saw a problem instead of trying to fix it he start searching for one to blame, and when we showe him that we already had a solution he listens carefully, go to higher management, and explains our ideas as his, and how without him that work would never be done. our team tried to make it work with him for 7 months, then I resigned cuz that was not the only problem, he liked to treat us like his slaves, telling one of the team members once after asking him to fix the deadlines for tasks (things we hade signed the contract on) he told her -if you shot your mouth and worked you would've got the job done- as soon as most of the team resigned the company fell apart and closed after one year only, he destroyed a company on his own.

    That HR image is very misleading - HR is not there to protect you, but protect the company. They deal with extreme stuff like sexual harassment etc cuz the company could be sued, however anything that cannot end in a lawsuit tends to end with a ruling/action that benefits the company, not the human RESOURCE

    9 out of 10 of my bosses have been toxic. HORRIBLY toxic. I've found that toxic people become more successful because of the abuse they've taken out on past coworkers.
    It's really hard for me to work for companies now. I have horrible anxiety about working for someone else.
    I'll make my own money now. I'm so sick of toxic leaders.

    A toxic leader it's a huge waste of energy and potential in the long run for workers, clients and the company as a whole.

    These traits also sound like a cult leader, without the charm aspect

    I see a lot of these traits in Vince McMahon, the CEO of WWE. His toxicity affected Raw and Smackdown to the point where I've given up on watching wrestling altogether.

    My husband's ex-boss was extremely toxic. She had all the characteristics except #7. She did a lot of work but was still inept in a lot of ways. Classic ESTJ hard driving personality. My husband was so happy when he retired.
