Their voices complement each other so well. Their harmonies are perfect.

They got their name from a group of black Marines. They did one of their first shows at a blues bar, and when the crowd saw they were white, they started booing and throwing things on the stage. So the Righteous Brothers just starting singing. It literally shocked the crowd into silence. Afterwards the group of marines said, “ That was Righteous, brothers.” That’s how they got their band name. lol

I once sang this at work...while working side by side with my boss. I didn't know she liked them.or knew the song....but I was singing both Bill and Bobby's lines at the end. ...

“The Righteous Brothers” are considered by most to be the Best Male Vocal Duet Of All Time. I agree. Between Bill Medley’s Lows and Bobby Hatfield’s Highs they can hit every note on an 88 key piano. No other male singers can do that. Legendary. "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling" was the most played song on the radio in the 20th Century.
"Unchained Melody" - Bobby Hatfield Live 1965. Considered by most as The Greatest Live Male Vocal Performance In History... I agree.
In 1983, in Newport Beach O.C. Calif. Bill and Bobby at the Jolly Roger Restaurant . I was 13 feet away for... "Unchained Melody"- "You've Lost That Lovin Feeling" - "Soul And Inspiration".... They were perfect, awesome, amazing, incredible......

Not really brothers, but Bobby Hatfield (tenor on the left) and Bill Medley (baritone on the right) were definitely righteous, the definition of blue eyed soul. Next up should be Bobby's solo of Unchained Melody live in 1965 (the one where he's wearing a pink blazer). The studio version was a number one hit in 1965 and again 25 years later when it was in the movie Ghost.

Bobby Hatfield is the tenor and Bill Medly is the baritone. Bobby sang alone on some songs for movie themes. Ebb Tide is one. Bobby sang UNCHAINED MELODY. Bill sang the theme for the movie DIRTY DANCING, HAVING THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE, and sang the lead in I JUST WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO YOU which is a Mississippi Delta Blues song. Their catalog of music is epic. They are in THE ROCK AND ROLL OF FAME.

The funny part of the songs of my decade was I didn't know that a lot of the songs I listened to were preformed by Black Artist until Time Life had a special on the song of the 60's and 70's and showed the artist who sang them. It was written as a follow-up to the success of this song, peaked at #1 for three straight weeks, and features the beautiful harmonies of both "brothers". Unchained Melody is also a great song, peaking at #4 and featured in the movie Ghost, but it is a solo by Bobby Hatfield (the tenor voice). If you want a solo, you can't go wrong with Unchained Melody. If you want the harmonies of both guys, then check out Soul and Inspiration.

The Righteous Brothers were making a pretty good living touring up and down the West Coast singing at black clubs. A record producer heard them, and convinced them to make some records, which went bananas over the radio. I was a young teenager, and we had two radio stations in Houston that played teen music...and back then, that meant Motown as well as the white music. Almost half-and-half, so that's what I grew up listening to and loving. The Righteous Brothers fit right in with that. Back then, it was referred to as "Blue-eyed soul."

The feelings embodied in the lyrics, and the lyrics themselves, were king in the production: everything and everyone was subject to them. The Righteous Brothers and the production team delivered both the feelings and lyrics beautifully and so had a hit.

They had a regular singing gig in a club outside the El Toro Marine Base in California. The black marines on the base liked their music a lot and after a really good show one of them called out "That was righteous, brothers" and they ended up choosing that as their group name. They hit the big time when they were on a stage bill with the Ronettes and the famous/infamous producer Phil Spectre heard them and arranged a contract deal with their small label. They were the first white group Spectre had ever signed. Their musical style became known as blue eyed soul.

According to stats, this was the most played song of the 20th century. Now that’s amazing, considering how many other songs that were written & played thru that century by any artists.

No not brothers, no Autotune just pure talent. Bill Medley baritone n Bobby Hatfield tenor. Bobby died afew years ago but Bill is still singing, I was fortunate to be friends with Bill They are blue eyed soul. The name of group came from when they were singing at a pub( with many black people were there) They all said Your Righteous Brothers n it stuck. Soul n Inspiration is another favorite. I listened to them since the 60's n yes im old but their music keeps me young. Thank you for keeping their music alive. I'm subscribed for sure

You need to react to the Live version of Unchained Melody. I great song written for a 1955 B Movie about a prisoner missing his loved ones. But Bobby Hatfield's cover in 1965 became the standard. The song has since been covered by another 500 or so artists, none as good as Bobby Hatfield's version.

Waaayyy before their time. In the late 50s and 60s, they were amazing. I was youngest of 8 girls and music was constant in my house. I actually still have their originals albums. Not vinyl…. Glass. They are not real brothers. Bobby Hatfield passed some years ago. Bill Medley, the taller, still performs. Soul and Inspiration is another hit. Also Unchained Melody was a single by a Bobby Hatfield.

Early on they were singing at a club and some black customers shouted that their music was "righteous brother". That is how they got the name.

Another funny story from their early days -- the owner/operator of a night club that catered to all-black audiences booked The Righteous Brothers -- sight unseen. He heard a recording or two and thought they'd be a perfect act, but when two skinny white boys showed up, he was mortified! It was too late to replace them with another act, so he had no choice but to put them on stage. The crowd wasn't happy...but when Bill and Bobby started singing, that changed! Before long, the crowd was eating it up and wouldn't let them off the stage! Entertainment critics invented the term "blue-eyed soul" to describe The Righteous Brothers.

A very good in depth analysis of this song. Another good song is soul and inspiration or unchained melody. When they were trying to think of a name for themselves a black man in the audience said you brothers are righteous. That's where they got the name. I'm glad you liked them.

Such amazing talents, both of them. They put out a lot of great music, both as a duo and also in solo efforts, which they liked to do occasionally. Bill is the tall brunette with the deep voice; Bobby is the blond tenor (or counter-tenor?) They were not actually brothers. They re-named themselves after playing a set at club near a Marine base - a Marine, who was black, called out, "That was righteous, brothers!" Along with their hits as a duet, check out Bobby's solo rendition of "Unchained Melody" - MAKE SURE to do the live version from 1965 (Andy Williams Show) - considered one of the finest live performances ever. You really get treated to his amazing vocal range (4 or maybe 5 octave range, I think) in that song. "Ebb Tide is another of his great solos-you really should give it a listen.
