For those who were confused by us saying this is dubbed, here is the actual audio from this live performance. th-cam.com/video/03iSUjHaUxY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=78IRu3Ey7lHAhQBG
This song was performed live, but this video was released with the studio recording of the audio. If you were there in the audience, you heard the actual live version. It’s good either way, but the studio version sounds better to me.
~ The live performance of "Unchained Melody" by The Righteous Brothers on the Andy Williams show is outstanding!!! - It's even better than the recorded version!!! You have to see that performance.
That is a good performance, however, since Bill isn't part of the song, I prefer "Rock & Roll Heaven". The call & response between the two vocals makes this song memorable to me.
Yes, I read that it was the most played song in radio history, until about five years ago, when it was overtaken by The Police’s ‘Every Breath You Take’.
Yes, Bobby was not just a tenor, he was a countertenor, so rare there is on average 1 per generation. And while countertenors usually cover 3-4 octaves, which is impressive in itself, Bobby could do 5. He did the range from tenor to the highest soprano effortlessly without ever going into falsetto, thats what makes his version of Unchained Melody so special. And the 1965 Andy Williams Show live version is even better than the studio version.
Don't be fooled by the "little microphone". It is a condenser microphone, which generally has better sound than the typical "dynamic microphones" commonly used on stage today. Dynamic mics existed back in the day too and were used in concert performances. But for TV performances, condenser mics were usually the choice because of their better sound quality. They aren't as rugged as dynamic mics so you wouldn't want to do any "mic drops" with them, but their sound is superior.
These guys are AWESOME! You need to hear Unchained Melody next! It's just Bobby singing, and he is AMAZING....and he's LIVE!!!!!!!! Be prepared to be blown away again!
To my knowledge, Bill Medley (the baritone) is still performing at the age of 84 performing with Bucky Heard since he re-formed the Righteous Brothers in 2016. Sadly, Bobby Hatfield (the tenor) passed away back in 2003. You may have heard them if you saw the movie "Ghost" when the song "Unchained Melody " was featured. Also, Bill Medley performed the song "The Time of my Life" with Jennifer Warnes in the film "Dirty Dancing".
Yes, check that video out among the other suggestions you'll be glad you listen and reacted to. Bill (baritone) sang a solo on the TV show Playboy After Dark..his song is called "Brown Eyed Woman" and then listen to a blues record (no video) he sang, with Bobby in the chorus, will that blow you away called "I Want To Make Love To You". "Ebbtide" is another solo record by the counter tenor Bobby that is something else to hear how you can feel the emotions. His voice is incredible. From 1965-1966 they were regulars on the TV show Shindig so there are plenty of live performance by the amazing Righteous Brothers.
Bobby and Bill were getting ready to go onstage and Bobby had a heart attack and died in 2003. They had been inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame previously to his death.
They were opposite ranges... Bill is bass-baritone and has a three octave range. Bobby is a counter tenor with a 3.5 octave range. This has been over-dubbed but they were actually singing live. Here is the original, live performance, complete with screaming fans th-cam.com/video/03iSUjHaUxY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1npjcKF1E_WMuLca
This is the most played song of the 20th century! Now are they righteous? You must hear live 1965 Unchained Melody and the Soul and Inspiration. You will be even further amazed
Bill Medley, the baritone who sang lead on this song also sang the theme song to the movie, "Dirty Dancing" along with Jenifer Warnes. The song is called "The Time of My Life" and I'm sure you've heard it.
This song received the most tv/radio airplay in the 20th century. Please react to more of their music. Some songs to check out are: You'll Never Walk Alone - performance from the ED Sullivan show - live performance Unchained Melody - live performance from the Andy Williams Show Summertime live performance 1965
Ironic comment, given that Hall and Oates had a hit in 1980 with this very song. In fact that is the version I grew up with and still prefer, even though Hatfield is by far the best singer in either duo.
Now, if you were impressed by Bobby's "surprising" vocals - treat yourself to his live performance of "Unchained Melody" (a HUGE hit for them) - it's still considered one of the best live vocal performances ever. And if you want to talk about range, Bobby had like a 4-ocatave range, if I'm not mistaken. Hope you react to it.
Yes, Bobby was, what is called a counter tenor. There is on average 1 per generation, thats how rare it is, and while they usually have a range of 3-4 octaves, Bobby could do 5. Between just these 2 guys, they could cover the entire vocal range.
I didn't expect to run into this today, but it took about ten seconds for me to be sixteen again, slow dancing at the Saturday night 'hop.' I also didn't expect it to bring tears to my eyes -- it was such a time, with such wonderful music, and it's wonderful to remember it.
Now you know why people suggested this. Pure fire. Pure talent. Women love this. The clarity, range and soul that they pour into their songs is beyond perfection. This maybe over 50 years old but it still packs a punch.
That massive baseball bat to the face background orchestration music was called "The Wall of Sound" and it was the signature sound of a recording produced by Phil Spector who was convicted of second degree murder and died in a California prison in 2019.
What a strange man Phil Spector was for sure, in just about any regard. The "Wall of Sound" was the start of a lot of careers and a lot of famous music. They say he hated stereo and thought his way of creating music shouldn't be tampered with. It was very costly and complicated to produce, but it is unmistakable all these decades later. The "Wrecking Crew" did a lot of work with Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. Just a couple of bits of trivia you might enjoy.
Thank you for playing my guys from the 60s. I was in high school when they came out in 1964. Of course, we went nuts over their voices and music. I still play their greatest hits CD in my car. ❤❤❤❤
This is pure raw talent! No auto tune. These guys are icons! This is called Blue-Eyed soul. Love this song and these guys so much. Love your reactions!!
My mom said they were huge back in the day and I believe it! And Daryl Hall and John Oates did a cover of this song when I was growing up in the 80s - and it was a big deal at that time. They killed it though and yes, they had a lot of hits but you have to watch Unchained Melody - a true classic and Bobby’s voice and range is incredible!
Bill is great but Bobby’s from another galaxy. As someone mentioned here, Bobby’s Live version of Unchained is one of the greatest vocal performances ever.
The way that these two sing in their beautifully tailored, pitched voices is to die for, however when lower voiced Bill Medley launches himself for the the higher ranges of his voice, and higher voiced Bobbie Hatfield swoops downwards, they completely change the direction and emotional impact of this gorgeous song. And it is wonderful. Always, always one of my absolute favourites. Secondly, you talked in your video about studio production and there is no problem recognizing the signature style of what Ryan (I think) calls the musical landscape. It's Phil Spectre's famous wall of sound.
WHOA!!! When I saw that you were going to react to this song, I KNEW you would love it!!! My wife got a kick from your reactions--she thought that Nick was about to have a stroke or something LOL--As most others might suggest, you need to react to "Unchained Melody." That song gives me goosebumps every time, and, on occasion, tears. Keep up the great work, Gentlemen.
Considered one of the greatest pop singles of all time. The Righteous Brothers literally were the vocal act that the term and genre "blue-eyed soul" was coined for and about. They are the Godfathers. In the grander scheme of things, I wonder whether it was fate, karma, kismet, or divine providence that brought together two such impeccable, soulful singers, from opposite ends of the vocal spectrum. Bobby Hatfield, the high tenor, will lay you flat with his version of "Unchained Melody". It's been a much-covered song, but he gives the most amazing, ultimate performance.
I was in high school when this performance was televised on Shindig, a very popular television show.Who knew that younger generations would be digging these guys decades later. Thanks for your reactions 😎🎵🎶
Really enjoyed this reaction. I can tell you will love hearing Brook Benton singing Rainy Night in Georgia. Studio version. He is a genuine dark burgundy velvet when he sings. Big hit.
This recording 60 years old and still being discovered by new fans! Three other greats by them are "Just Once in My Life", "Soul & Inspiration" and "Go Ahead and Cry".
Ok. I’m gonna parrot what you’ve already heard….. Unchained Melody, so Bobby can mesmerize; Soul and Inspiration for support that this wasn’t just a fluke one-hit wonder; and if you didn’t know Bill Medley sand the theme song to the movie Dirty Dancing with Jennifer Warnes “I’ve Had the Time of My Life”.
You might also check their live performance on the Ed Sullivan TV show singing “YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE” It really shows their individual talent as well as the beautiful harmonies!
the deep baritone is Bill Medley, and the 3-octave tenor is Bobby Hatfield (RIP). keep in mind guys that this is in the era Before there was auto tune. The most played/requested song of the 20th Century. Also check out: " Unchained Melody" (react to the version that was live on The Andy Williams Show) and "Soul and Inspiration". Bobby Hatfield doesn't sound like anyone else. THE Righteous Brothers!
For those who were confused by us saying this is dubbed, here is the actual audio from this live performance. th-cam.com/video/03iSUjHaUxY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=78IRu3Ey7lHAhQBG
You ought to listen to Peace Brother Peace by Bill Medley. Was played when the any channel signed off for the day.
Better yet.
This song was performed live, but this video was released with the studio recording of the audio. If you were there in the audience, you heard the actual live version. It’s good either way, but the studio version sounds better to me.
Love them and this great song.
When you two are ready to appreciate Bobby Hatfield (the one with the "higher" voice), react to Unchained Melody, the 1965 color TV version.
Bobby’s singing on this song is iconic
I totally agree... this version is even better than the original studio version, folks!
Definitely!
U MUST HEAR UNCHAINED MELODY NOW!!!
Summertime (1965) is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
They were dubbed "blue eyed soul" many years ago. I love seeing young people react to the music I grew up with ❤❤❤
These two guys were absolutely phenomenal. They had such a unique sound…baritone to counter tenor. Keep listening to their hits and their solos.
502 guys, please don't miss Bobby Hatfield singing "Ebb Tide" and "Summertime" live! You won't believe it! Summertime is really "blue-eyed soul" !!
Fun fact…Cher was one of the ladies swaying in the back.
This song was in the movie Top Gun.😊
This was performed live on the tv show shindig
GIVE A LISTEN TO SOUL AND INSPIRATION BY THEM, IT IS OMG!
Welcome to what was called Blue Eyed Soul. My generation had the best music
1965 unchained melody
This song is the most played song of the entire 20th century.
True! No exaggeration
I’ve known this song my whole life. It NEVER gets old
Yeah, I wouldn't mind hearing it everyday! ❤
These guys were the inspiration for Hall & Oates
Iconic singers. No autotune at all.
It’s one of the most played songs in radio of all time. ❤
Bill Medley- baritone/bass
Bobby Hatfield- tenor
Bobby had quite a range - tenor/countertenor
Yes, I read that it was the most played song in radio history, until about five years ago, when it was overtaken by The Police’s ‘Every Breath You Take’.

they say this is the most requested song in the 20th century.
Gentlemen, I am 75 years old. This is my music, lol. The Righteous Brothers were called "blue eyed soul" back in the day. They were one of a kind!
I'm 72 and feeling young again!!
There are people alive today who were conceived because of this song. Their voices ain't "fire", they're a volcano.
Bill Medley, the tall one, and Jennifer Warens are the artists who sang the final song in DIRTY DANCING, I’VE HAD THE TIME OF MY LIFE.
Phil Spector's Wall of Sound and two amazing voices. No autotune, gimmicks, just talent.
HAHAHAHA 😂 I am 77 yrs young and LOVE LOVE LOVE your reaction!! This was MY music!!
Thanks! 👍👍👏👏🎉🎉
“His voice is amazing too”!
That’s why they are Righteous
The most played song on American radio stations
The most played song and requested song of the 20th century. 😊😊
Awwe I loved Bobby . He was an amazing singer ❤❤❤❤
You'll Never Walk Alone, from The Ed Sullivan Show really showcases their voices

😞
One of the most famous recordings of the decade. Absolute perfection, and one of Phil Spector's best productions.
Unchained Melody....best vocal ever !!!!!!
A very young and unknown woman named Cher was one of the background singers for this song.
Wow , Never knew that
They were opposite ranges... Bill is bass-baritone and has a three octave range. Bobby is a counter tenor with a 3.5 octave range. This has been over-dubbed but they were actually singing live. Here is the original, live performance, complete with screaming fans

Bobby Hatfield was called a counter tenor, his voice range was that of a female opera singer!!!
Don't stop there .... Bobby the shorter one sings Unchained Melody and we can't forget Soul and Inspiration, Ebb Tide, and all the rest!!!
This is the most played song of the 20th century! Now are they righteous? You must hear live 1965 Unchained Melody and the Soul and Inspiration. You will be even further amazed

Grammy, Golden Globe, and Oscar winner for Bill and Jennifer!

This was a huge hit, became an iconic song.
Brilliant the birth of blue eyed soul. Always played at every high school; dance in the 60s including mine.
I try not to say I can't believe you haven't heard this but OMG!
These guys are the epitome of blue eyed soul.
Congrats!
right! i was like have they not seen Top Gun?
Watching your faces.. made my day.
Long before Daryl Hall and John Oates and Robert Palmer, the blue-eyed soul torch was carried by these two. Magnificence, personified.
Ironic comment, given that Hall and Oates had a hit in 1980 with this very song. In fact that is the version I grew up with and still prefer, even though Hatfield is by far the best singer in either duo.
Very well put.
Yeah, they were talented dude’s. Love the blue eyed soul!!!🤘🔥
They were playing in a club & when they finished some one yelled THATS RIGHTOUS BROTHER...they took that as their name
Now, if you were impressed by Bobby's "surprising" vocals - treat yourself to his live performance of "Unchained Melody" (a HUGE hit for them) - it's still considered one of the best live vocal performances ever. Unchained Melody live on the Andy Williams show, also Soul and Inspiration live also on Hullabaloo show from the 60s both so amazing.
Bobby is combing high notes naturally (not a falsetto) with growl
I didn't expect to run into this today, but it took about ten seconds for me to be sixteen again, slow dancing at the Saturday night 'hop.' I also didn't expect it to bring tears to my eyes -- it was such a time, with such wonderful music, and it's wonderful to remember it.

Unchained Melody, live on the Andy Williams Show is also mind blowing.
❤❤❤❤

Just another morsel of nighttime tv entertainment from the 60s. We were blessed to be there.
You've just witnessed BLUE EYED SOUL!!! Sweetness!!

NOTHING LIKE OLD SCHOOL, REAL TALENT!
Danced to this as a teenager..........so popular when I was a teen ♥♥♥♥♥
Their voices complimented and balanced each other so perfectly. Two equally fantastic singers. ❤❤❤❤
It is a live performance. I remember watching all of their live performances back in the day,

Beautiful heart-wrenching lyrics. A slow dance masterpiece.

Unchained Melody will blow you away. Blue eyed soul.
You must see the live Andy Williams show performance of Unchained Melody. It is live.
Their "I Just Want to Make Love To You" is the best example of blue-eyed soul!
Enjoyed watching you two listen to this for the first time. Hard to believe you never heard it before. The Righteous Brothers are legendary.
I was a teen when this came out... these guys were gods. It has never lost its effect, it still gives chillz.
You're right both this song and the Righteous Brothers are a masterpiece. This song is 60 years old and still an iconic song. ❤❤
I couldn't wait for your reaction to the end of this song...I knew it would blow your mind..😂
