  • Did you know that HONDA has admitted to having an oil dilution problem with several of their 1.5L cars, including the Honda CRV, Honda Civic, and Honda Accord! There's even a Honda class action lawsuit related to oil dilution! However, oil dilution isn't just a problem with Honda's 1.5L engine, the Honda 2.0L engine also has oil dilution issues as I've recently discovered. In this video, we'll cover - What is oil dilution? Can oil dilution damage your car - oil dilution damage? What are the symptoms of oil dilution? How can you prevent oil dilution, or at least lessen the chance of oil dilution on your Honda? Is oil dilution a Honda engine problem, or can it be an issue with all direct injection (DI) engines? If you have a Honda Accord, Honda CRV, or Honda Civic, you'll want to watch this video on oil dilution.

I get anywhere between 3% and 7% on my 2.0t after about 10 analysis on the oil. It depends on the temeprature. When its cold in the winter, the fuel dilution is bad, when its hot in the summer, its very low. But never had bellow 3%. Hence why I run 5w30. By the end of 4000 miles on my oil changes, its down to a 0w20. A 0w20 would be down to 0w10.
90% highway driving with 30 minute driving to work, and 30 minutes back. Plenty of time to warm up the oil and have the fuel evaporate.

My Blackstone analysis for my 2018 2.0T Accord came back with 2.5% fuel. I do lots of idling and short trips, but change the oil every 3 to 5k miles. Ironically, my ex wife's 1.5 CRV had a little less dilution. All GDI cars have this to a degree and I'm not concerned. If you change the oil frequently it's not going to cause noticeable wear. Based on what I've been told by numerous Honda techs, the 2.0 is very robust, and head gasket failure is a much bigger problem for the 1.5 than oil dilution

Not sure how much fuel was in mine but my oil sheared from 0w20 to 0w16 after just 1800 miles. So because of that if you intend on using 0w20 I would change it more frequently (2000~ miles or so) or just use 5w30 which is my preference.

There is a difference between a diesel oil dilution and petrol because diesel is literally an oil so even though it degrades the engine oil it is better than petrol which is a natural degreaser.

But you shouldn't have to do all that. Honda does not live upto it's name anymore. The oil dilution problem is common here in Canada. I did an oil change and the oil came out reeking of gasoline. The used oil was filled up to about 4.5 qts. The oil capacity on the engine is 3.7 qts, which means there is at least 0.8 qts of extra fluid mixed in there with the oil. My commute to work is 30min, so thT should be more than enough time for the car to warm up. Anyways I sold the CRV and bought a RAV4. No issues with ANYTHING ever since : )

How’s it going man. Just watched your video and it was very informative. I never knew this was a thing with Hondas. I have a 2021 Accord 2.0 T. Before this I had a Hellcat. Hellcats had the same issue to some degree due to the pressure of the supercharger causing some blow by of the piston rings. One thing that helped was having a catch can. Do you think having a catch can would assist in this situation?

I thought that the fuel in the oil pan stays there until you change it, but it turns out according to you that it can be burned or evaporated during good amount of driving it. I recently bought 2021 accord exl 1.5l with 8 k miles. I checked the oil stick, the level was okay but it had a smell of gasoline, it remind me of our 30 old Ural side car motorcycle that had a same exact smell. My question is, would driving my car softly and without abuse lessen the oil delusion ? I feel like when you gun your car, some parts of fuel still end up being unburned thus fuel sneaks into the pan. Thanks

I have been a Honda fanboy for 3 decades never have I ever experience so many problems with Hondas especially the last 14 years. The oil dilution issues are part of the problems at Honda but more importantly those corrupt dealerships are not helping customers. They are still pushing for long oil change intervals so they can sell new cars to customers every 5 or 6 years.
I have completely gravitated towards Toyotas and Lexus and never looked back at Honda/Acura. There is a big difference in quality. Toyotas ages more gracefully and parts quality are absolutely amazing. There are still many models are still Made in Japan and parts still largely still Made in Japan.

I hope that everyone understands that ALL Gasoline Direct Injected (GDI) motors have the oil dilution issue, all brands, all makes. It's due to the use of a high pressure fuel pump. Leaking injectors compound the issue. The facts and suggestions in this video are good. Don't drive short distances (only) and do change your oil more often than your Honda's Maintenance Minder suggests. Drive your car on the highway regularly. Sustained highway speeds will cause some of the gasoline in the oil to evaporate. I have a '19 CRV with the GDI 1.5L turbo motor and I follow the Honda forums. As a means of not subjecting the internal motor parts to diluted oil, I always replace the oil AND oil filter at 5000 miles. Oil dilution cannot be stopped in motors that use the direct injection design. It's normal for the oil to smell somewhat of gasoline. Follow the suggestions in the video and here to reduce any long term negative effects.

In order to avoid oil dilution problem you should not buy a vehicle with direct injection engine in the first place. Just get a car with MPI and run for as many miles it can survive, and that is gonna be definitely more than these GDI and turbocharged engine cars

This pisses me off. I have been a Honda fan for decades as all my cars have been super reliable, even in temps as low as -45 c. I wouldn’t buy a new one even if I needed one, I’ll keep my older Hondas and not even worry about them at all, the new stuff is junk.

If you are running E85 or anything with an ethanol content more than regular pump gasoline (91 or 93 octane) You WILL dilute your oil no matter how you slice it. This is especially true with these engines when people start modding them and are looking for a better fuel choice than regular "pump" gas. Simply change your oil more frequently and you will be just fine.

Turbo run higher pressure, new engines, have low tension rings for less friction. It allows gasoline to bypass the rings and go into the crank case it’s the EPA and government for trying to make Honda get a few Better per gallon. Stick to your 1990 Honda. It’ll get 350,000 miles easy.

Or, consider buying one before they had direct injection. I bought my '06 CR-V new and it drives like a champ with older technology, though with not as much power and fuel economy. Also, the heater doesn't have the problems of the 1.5L turbo, which is the main reason I won't buy one. To avoid fuel dilution you wouldn't need to buy ones that old, but that's just an example of one that's been taken care of and lasting many years.
