  • The Hyundai i10 is designed for buyers searching for a small, nippy car that’s easy to drive on city streets. Tiny dimensions and light steering make it easy to park, and a light weight means that it doesn’t use much fuel. But what happens if you need to venture further afield? How does it cope out on the open road, and is there space for your friends in the back? I find out this and much more in my full in-depth review.

My wife has this car (premium 1.2) and I regularly average over 60mpg and that includes town driving. Reverse is not a problem, admittedly its a bit of a knack though. We love it, surprisingly good.

Peter Russell my wife gets about 45 too. It's how you drive the car not how slow you go. My wife has given up on trying to match me as it makes her grumpy.

Not sure that many modern cars "struggle" on motorways. If you can cruise, with a load, at 70 to 75, ...if you can get past really slow things with some acceleration.... then you are not really struggling. What makes you struggle are conditions and trucks overtaking each other for 5km. All modern cars, even little ones are fine. People are the problem and not the cars.

    • @oddities-whatnot
      @oddities-whatnot 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

David Hayes Good comment that, as it irritates me when reviewers constantly say 1 litre engines struggle on the motorway. They are too used to driving aggressively in their private lives in big BMWs no doubt! As you say, so long as you can sit at the speed limit without much fuss, and can still accelerate a bit then the car is fine, although some engines are not as good as others, and it depends on the gearing too. A Celerio at 70 is very noisy and feels like its out of breath, yet the Aygo and Picanto with same sort of power (from 3 cylinder engines) both sit more comfortably at 70 and are more refined with the perception of being more powerful. Very odd that. Ive owned all three and there is a big difference. I think the Celerio is just made very cheaply !

Yes the 1.2 87HP engine in this car can goes to around 175 kmh which means 110 mph

      I agree.
I have suzuki celerio with 1.0 litre engine but I drive it on highways without any problem or struggle.
My cruising speed is usually 110 kmph

    • @ymaa007

I hired one of these for a week in southern Ireland and found it a lovely little car to drive. Comfy for two people just touring around the twisty narrow roads up and around mountains was a real pleasure indeed. Enough room for two overnight bags in the small boot. Very easy to park as well. The only downside I thought was it was so difficult to hear the indicator working if it didn't auto cancel after a turn. I often noticed the panel light blinking away without hearing the little click click of the relay. A small niggle on an otherwise pleasant little car. I was very impressed. Its not a racer at all. just a nice little motor.

Bought the top of the range version Premium SE and I absolutely love it. By far the best urban car overall right now. Drives great and cornering is incredible for a small car. You really feel like your driving a much bigger car. Petrol consumption is very good around town.
The extras are amazing. Definitely recommend the i10 Premium SE .

Edit: Everything went to plan. It can be a little thirsty on long repeated trips but it's a good cost-efficient run around if you don't need to do long journeys often. It's also really easy to drive if a bit too smooth when you first start driving it.

Both my i10s have had progressive, strong and predictable brakes, one of the best features of the car in fact, no idea what's wrong with the one you drove! The only car I've driven whose brakes acted like you described were fitted to a 2011 Seat Ibiza. Also while I agree there is some road (tyre roar) noise, on the whole the cabin is far quieter (I would say measurably) than the 2015 Fiesta mine replaced, it's also better at soaking up bumps.

The reverse problem appear sometimes when u don't press the cluch to its full ! I think it is more of a protection stuff (no one want to pass reverse in place of 4 th lol). I have one (1.2 petrol) and i can told u it is soo good. Its size help a lot in town, it brake very well when needed and it accelerate very quickly. It does very well in the highway, i already drove it with 120km/h and it did so damn well.

i m from india i own this car
the fact that u addressed both the main issues "brakes" and "reverse gear" has actually taken my stress away knowing that i haven't messed up its just how the car is but there's plenty to love about👌

I tried for a week the 1.0 version and did 500 miles. It took one and 1/3 tanks for petrol and the use in the motorway was great defo a really good good car... the struggle to get reverse it's real hahaha

Great review Mat. A friend of mine has the previous generation, but the 3 cylinder 1.0 litre and I am amazed at how much punch its got. Definitely not out of its depth on the motorway. She test drove the 1.2, but preferred the 1.0 litre as it was more fun and sounded better too. She hasn't got any issues with reverse, so maybe its a 1.2 trait? Years ago with older cars, if you had trouble getting it into reverse, putting into 1st then reverse always sorted the issue :)

Mr H I have a previous gen with the older 1.1 engine. It's very fun because you have to really work the (very good) Gearbox to go forward. I have the reverse thing by the way... But just release clutch, reengage and then shift. Relatively common in all tier of Hyundai!

The automatic is perfect for city centre driving, just don’t accelerate hard when you drop below 20 as it goes back into 1st and gets a little vocal. Would be better as a CVT I think :-)

The premium se no longer has push button ignition, they've replaced it with a Sat nav...BAD move. Three i10s on the trot. Probably my last. But what to have ? Any suggestions ?

To get reverse while stationary shift into first then second and then reverse. Hyundai Mech said kinda safety feature so you don't accidentally go in reverse

Absolutely love my job '09 hyundai i10 1.1 crdi. Diesel is the way to go on these small cars just because of low end torque. It's very fun to throw it around. Also it drinks only 5l/100km tops, if you're not driving like a maniac you can manage 4-4.5l/100km. This car is amazing for what it is worth.

What's the smallest car that still has a telescopic steering wheel? My 2007 polo has it but modern cars gave up on it.

If you can't shift to reverse you should try first gear and than reverse or while you are pushing clutch you should lift your foot a little until you feel that little relaxing on the shifter. ☺️
