It wasn't a defeat for Obi-Wan---It was a lesson taught from teacher to Padawan. The whole point of the duel was to show how Anakin was too headstrong for his own good. It played into how Kenobi knew Vader would not have the patience for a siege, rather, he would simply attack.

You're assuming the writer's paid any more attention to that than ROTS? What you've forgotten is that this didn't happen as it would mean Anakin didn't pay attention. Shame really but could have been as bad as letting someone run around knowing who Anakin is when that shouldn't happen.
Anakin never learned, it’s why in ANH he was so focused on striking down Ben meanwhile Luke & co. make their escape. He may have thought he was the Master, but Obi-Wan lived on through the force & didn’t grant him the satisfaction of finishing his feud.
Anakin wasn't interested in preventing Luke, Leia and Han's escape . . . especially since he had a tracking device placed on the Falcon. He was interested in killing in Obi-Wan.
Haven't seen the video yet but before I go in here are my options: 1 = it was a sparing session so obi wan wasn't going all out, until the end where he won. 2 = obi wan had not full mastered form 3 or 5 yet, since if memory serves me correct at this point obiwan was only a master of form 1 and 4 but his loss to dooku in attack of the clones was what ultimately pushed his to master and focus on mainly the defence aspects of form 3 above all others. (But this is just speculation).
Obi Wan never practiced form 5 (but he did probably have some knowledge of it from watching Anakin). And he learned form 3 because of how Qui Gon died due to form 4 giving him few defensive options against Maul.
Kenobi started with form IV (Ataru) because that is what Qui-Gon used and taught him. After the loss to Maul, Kenobi saw the flaws in Ataru and started learning form 3 (Soresu). He would use Soresu going forward with some Ataru moves mixed in.
I think Anakin might have been better with a lightsaber than Obi-wan, even here as a mere student. But he never learned to be humble, and that is why he lost to Obi-wan here, or in Revenge of the Sith, and this is how Tarkin fucked him up in a comic. He never thinks he can fail, he thinks he is better than others, and always seeks the same validation from others that Palpatine gives him. That is his weakness which he does not know about himself, and that is why it does not matter how much more skilled he is with the lightsaber or the Force, Obi-wan is better than him.
So it all depends on how you define better. Both are masters but with different goals. Obi wan used defence he didn’t always want to win just survive until either, he find a weakness in his opponent, help arrives or he can escape, anakin on the other hand was more about defeating his opponent.
@@nathangarrett9868 Anakin can seemingly overpower Obi-wan easily, even during this fight when he was a padawan. He did put up a considerably better fight against Dooku than his master, and he was the one who killed him at the end. He seems to be stronger in the CW fights as well. But Obi-wan does not have the unbeatable urge to prove himself better over others, so he is still a better fighter overall, because he is humble, and takes everyone and everything seriously.
@@nialencapefet5154 I agree completely. To me obi wan was the only person who could beat anakin even yoda would have failed to me. It’s a bit like ufc where styles make fights.
@@nialencapefet5154 the thing with Dooku and why both Obi and Anakin lost easily to him was because Dooku's fighting style is designed around turning your opponents strikes against themselves. with Anakin focusing on heavy strikes and Obi-wan still being more in favor of qui-gon jins style, these play well into Dooku's hand. that's why an faster opponent like Yoda could overpower Dooku, since Yoda is fast and numble, doesn't focus on heavy strikes and just focuses on overwhelming your opponent with sheer speed, that's why Grievous was also so dangerous and generally only an master in form 3 could be a match. Grievous could wield 4 sabers at once with precision, going on the offensive is suicide, which is all Anakin really can do.

Anakin could have just picked up obi wand lightsaber and still fought but he knew it was a test. Anakin beat him in the combat but not the mental game. He was arrogant and was more powerful. However he is better than obi wan in every way possible.
There is more than one way to win a duel which Obi-Wan showed as he ended up with both light sabers before handing Anakin his back. Ego was always going to keep Anakin from being the greatest light saber duelist ever.
False on one point. Obi-Wan most certainly did NOT have "both" light sabres at the end of the duel. He only had Anakin's, which he force-yanked out of Anakin's hand. In fact, that's the reason why the conclusion makes no sense: i.e., Anakin only knocked Obi-Wan's sabre away, and it was always still lying on the floor wherever it landed after Anakin knocked it out of Kenobi's hand. When Kenobi yanked Anakin's sabre into his own grasp, Anakin could have just immediately force-pulled Kenobi's sabre into his own, from wherever on the ground it was lying. (Kenobi's sabre was never shown tumbling off the tower or something, nor was there ever a shot of Kenobi force-pulling it back into his own grasp.)
“In a lot of ways, I’m really ahead of him.” -Anakin, Episode 2 Anakin was already more talented and more powerful than Obi Wan in the episode 2 era. He sensed the attack on Padme when guarding her apartment a split second faster than Obi Wan. Anakin gave Dooku a better fight in episode 2 than Obi Wan did. Anakin’s downfall was his lack of patience, which Obi Wan possessed tremendously.
Also though I will say the two of them got more powerful for revenge of the sith, obi wan had perfected his form 3 style by that point and anakin had just straight up grown in both power and saber combat, solidifying his place above obi wan however obi wan standing above him in wisdom
I'm not sure... Obi Wan defeated every one of the most feared villains of his time... Greivis who terrorized and defeated many gifted Jedi... Maul... young Vader... And against Dooku Obi Wan was forced to attack instead of fall back because he could not give ground to protect Anakin... Is Obi Wan not the greatest Duelist though? I mean based solely on his victories?
@@jasontaylor5713 He lost to Dooku twice. Definitively. Dooku is definitely better than Kenobi, whatever other rankings they may have against other Jedi/Sith.
Patience is everything. As Yoda says, it's the key and the ultimate defence against the dark. That's why the Jedi did not allow attachment. Anakin was the BEST example of what happens when you break cardinal rules. Sidious exploited his fear and blatantly lied to him with that greatly embellished story about Plagueis. Patience is how Yoda defeats Sidious. People think Yoda 'lost' the fight to Sidious. He does not. Whilst fighting Sidious, Yida finally saw through the dark side, and saw Luke's future. That's why Yoda goes into voluntary exile whilst Sidious gloats. Sidious forgets his own lesson and is so addicted to adjusting his Force Visions that he misses out on Padme giving birth to twins. Worse still for Sidious, the children become adults, and the male Luke, becomes a Jedi. Luke let's Vader and Sidious believe it was Obi-wan who trained him when in fact, it was Yoda. Sidious brushes this off as he falls to his own Hypocrisy. "You are blind, he boasts to Master Yoda' as the Jedi are decimated. Yoda, a quick yet patient learner observes what the Sith did. It took the Sith 1,000 years but only 20 or so for the Jedi to topple the very brief Sith period. Sidious too breaks a cardinal law of the Sith. He breaks the Rule of Two and teaches Vader nothing of any real use. This is what unbalanced Sidious and the darkside. Anakin had no Patience. Like all Sith, Anakin, who becomes Vader becomes powerful in a brutal, passion filled way. He cannot even meditate. This is how his selfish Master, Darth Sidious keeps it arms length and in 22 or so years NEVER arises above an Enforcer. A Doberman Pinscher or Rottweiler. On Mustafar, Anakin/Vader was so enraged that Padme had 'chosen' Obiwan over him. He was completely blinded by his anger, and full of Ego that he was all powerful and unbeatable. He only lasted a paltry 30 hours with limbs intact. Those famous words before Anakin became shish-kebabed. The words being 'You underestimate my new powers' oblivious to Obi-wan's true warning 'Don't try It Anakin, I have the high ground.'. A few seconds later . . . an angry albeit useless torso left to die near an ocean of lava. Darth Sidious: felt Vader's danger in the Force. This destroys the theory that Obiwan 'got lucky' and beat Vader. Obi-wan kept his initial words which were ' I will do what I must ' versus the Sith can ou see my new powers. " Even Sidious said that Patience was the key. He keeps reminding Vader 'be patient my friend'.
Anikan was always more powerful than Kenobi but power Alone doesn’t win duels brains matter also and anikan was very arrogant and tended to let his arrogance cause him to make mistakes and it is worse when anikan looses control of his anger
Your right it takes More than Power(Brute Strength) to win a Battle/Skirmish it helps if you're Strong however(Naturally Gifted like Skywalker was), Anakin let his Status of the Chosen one + That of his Arrogant Nature Cloud his Foresight, To Win or Survive Takes Brain's(Knowing how to Maneuver), Just as Much you have to know when to Strike & When to Conserve Play Defence, Anakin is like an Aggressive Bull trying Force his way,(Many others Adopt this Style of Fighting) & they Wear themselves thin(Like Mustafar Duel between Obi & Anakin-Vader), Than get Frustrated & Antsy thus leading themselves open to a Crippling Blow.
on Mustafar Anakin was an absolute powerhouse. He went after his master like a literal *train.* all obi wan had to do was move the fight off the tracks. the train had no where to go. this is literally how the fight ends at the "YoU uNdEr-EsTiMaTe mY pOwEr" part.
Let's look at it this way...who still has all his limbs? Obi-Wan...who has taken their time to mature? Obi-Wan. Anakin was just too headstrong to focus on the long game. Talent will eventually get you there but maturity will lead the way, ask Tom brady.
It's hard to base anything off a spar .obi can be teaching where as anakin wants to win , focusing on winning the spar rather than learning the lessons .I feel like these little sparring sessions is what gave anakin confidence in there last Mustafar battle
Obi-Wan didn't lose though, as evidenced by the eventual conclusion of the dual in those flashback scenes. The whole point of the duel was to teach Anakin a lesson about how being too focused upon victory and celebrating too early would be his downfall. I don't deny that Anakin was using a more powerful form that focuses on lightsaber duelling, but Obi-Wan was a more cunning tactician who was well practised in patience.
@@Jonnodude1985 Yeah, I did. Obi-Wan is disarmed, Anakin presume's the spar is over. But Obi-Wan is "Nuh huh, mu lesson." then surprises Anakin, spins around him knocks him forward and nicks his Lightsaber off him. Then says the main point of his lesson. It really doesn't change anything I said. Obi-Wan comes off as someone that couldn't stand losing to Anakin. Is that what the scene is supposed to come off? No. Is it how it does? Yes. It would work better if Anakin were to over extend. But suppose the symbolism with Reva's attempt to kill Vader afterward wouldn't be as strong.
Definitely a teaching moment in this duel, like Obi wan said “your need to prove your self will be your own doing until you over come it a padawan you will still be.” Mind over > power.
This is very good analysis. I was looking at that training duel from the perspective of Anakin as a Padawan and forgot to consider that Obi Wan will also get much better as well.
i agree but the training session wasnt anything special and its safe to assume theyve had several other training sessions that went a similar way, they had to break it up to show how the flaws affect their new encounter step by step, or else there would be no reason for their training scene to play if you get a summary first that u dont know is a summary yet then see a similar encounter play out
2:52 idk obi in epi 1 vs maul was very convincing but only after he tapped into the dark side , when Qui gon died . He became way more aggressive , It seems like he switched to form V in midfight against maul himself . With pinpoint precision he broke maul's saber in half .
@@the_gift1828 he elbow Anakin and used the force to grab his saber ... Anakin won the dual itself ....you can't claim Kenobi the winner when Skywalker disarmed him first
In the timeline, this sparring session is just before the start of Episode 2. It's callback to the speeder chase scene. Where Obi Wan says to Anakin "If you spent as much time practicing your saber techniques as you do your wits, you would rival Master Yoda as a swordsman." To which Anakin replies "I thought I already did." And Obi Wan rebuts "Only in your mind my very young apprentice." With this statement, Kenobi pretty much admits Anakin has already surpassed him in lightsaber skills.
Learn Your lesson: Anakin disarmed Obi Wan and Obi Wan disarmed Anakin. Therefor it's a draw. This sparring match wasn't about winning or loosing, it was about the lesson that a Jedi, even without a weapon, is not helpless as long as he/she has the force. Obi Wan made a fantastic job in making Anakin aware of his headstrong approach which turned his thinking into tunnel vision.
He did beat him in the combat fight. Anakin easily could have just grabbed obi’s lightsaber. But he knew this was a test. He was just arrogant. However Anakin was better in every way. Did we watch the same episode? It was Anakin that lost the fight, Obi-wan was teaching him the error of being too aggressive in a fight. O I-wan defeated him without having a lightsaber in hand.
How did he beat Obi wan , when he was the disarmed by the end of the duel? Didn't Kenobi continue without a lightsaber and best Anakin. Or did we watch a different show?
Obi-Wan lost to Anakin because he was still determining which lightsaber combat style to use. Anakin has had a lot of practice in saber combat over the time.
It was touched on in the video but Obi Wan was in between lightsaber forms but his level of self control was far beyond Anakin and Obi Wan wouldn't overreach his capabilities
I love this kind of fan-fiction on Star wars. Obviously, some of these deep analysis has not been considered by the directors of the films and even some novels. The fans are making star wars greater than the brand that owns the trademark.
There’s a lot of interpretation in this fight. 1) It’s a training 2) They aren’t trying to actually kill 3) Wildly different mindsets, which is important considering it’s Star Wars, etc
No he clearly lost and got disarmed but Kenobi wanted to continue the fight Anakin didn’t want to hurt Obi Wan so he didn’t hit him with the lightsaber

If Obi-Wan beat Anakin on Mustafar because he was the smarter fighter....uh, doesn't that make him the better duelist? That's such a stupid argument lol. If you get outsmarted or you lose because your emotions got the best of you, you aren't better than the more intelligent/composed fighter. Obi-Wan defeated Anakin on Mustafar and in Episode 6 of Kenobi because he was the better duelist. Period. Anakin's strength and gifts in the force were not enough to overcome Obi-Wan's savviness
well because he was clear-minded not have an evil tent in him at the time but when he turned to the dark side my guess is he had so many things happen in his mind him losing his mother people they worked with maybe him wanting to be a master he was obsessed with being a master in losing Ashoka hurt him too that had to do something too it. so yea a lot was happening in his mind when he changed to the dark side. remember old age comes with wisdom and strength I hear old master is featured in Chinese culture. hell, I am scared of my cousin's grandpa and aunt because they used to teach martial arts students on my mom's side with the Asian side.
The flashback scene is kind of funny because you got a forty-year-old Padawan now trying to look like a 20 year old padawan. Both are still sad because padawans are usually in their teens.
Anakin wanted to win the battle but Obi Wan tried to teach him how to win the war. If Anakin did learn he wouldn't charge Dooku and wouldn't lose an arm. Then he wouldn't "try it". If he didn't get burned he'd be able to become the strongest force user ever. But he lost the moment he decided to disregard Obi Wan's advice
I always felt Obi-Wan and Anakin did enough sparing together that they knew each other's fighting style VERY well and that mitigated any power differences between them. It also probably contributed to Obo-Wan mastering the defensive form.... When you think about it the defensive form is the most frustrating thing for Anakin as he can't just stomp in with a quick knock out blow. Like Qui-Gon used Ataru, and I'd call that like speed chess... sure you're making sound moves but as soon as someone does some deeper thinking you're screwed.
@@jwil4286 Yoda wipes the floor with Anakin. ObiWan is slaughtered by Palpatine. Best move would have been to take Anakin down first (Anakin was toast no matter what happened.) Then tag team Palpatine together. Key to tag teaming Palpatine would have been to keep ObiWan at a distance and have Yoda engage in close to him. Like if Obi Wan had been there when Yoda and Palpatine were in that force lightning bind, Obi Wan might have been able to make all the difference.
I thought it was worth mentioning too, but if this Sparring is set before Attack of the Clones. Anakin hasn't become unbalanced by meeting Padme again yet so he was more focused, Obi-Wan I don't believe was yet a Master either at that time.
Probably cuz Kenobi wasn't taking the spar seriously. Honestly they should CGI Christian said he looked way too old to be a Padawan he looked like an old man.
Everyone is like "Vader is so powerful!" But seems to forget that Obi-Wan is on par with him, defeating Anakin and Vader, time anfter time. Despite not "training" nearly as much as Vader, and despite not being as ruthless as Vader is. They are very much equals. Who wins depens on the form of the day (and script writing). If Vader is so "strong with the force", also Obi-Wan is.
There was another reason Anakin lost that duel on Mustafar it's the fact Anakin wasn't using the dark side but being controlled by it this made him act more impulsively and arrogantly this led to him making that flip
I think their duel represents obi-wan’s unwillingness to accept defeat. Yes anakin might crave victory, but also you can see that he’s literally just chilling in their duel. I think obi-wan deep down is truly insecure that his PADAWAN bested him and he alludes to this being a common thing. He feels he has very little to teach him and that’s why he hits anakin with the big me, little you and says he will remain a padawan until he no longer “needs to prove himself.” Although obi-wan’s heart is in the right place, this duel shows the hypocrisy of the Jedi: unwilling to accept they are beaten until it’s too late.
With most jedi I agree but obi wan never had an ego , he even admits anakin is a splendid warrior which he subtly implies that yea you can out fight me but your so tunnel visioned and one track minded that you allowed be to out think you which let to your defeat which ironically enough was his down fall on Mustafar after seemingly having an advantage 90% of that fight
The idea is nice but that definitely wasn't the case. I think you're reading too much into it. Yes Ob1 did feel inadequate for Anakin, and that's been the case for a while, but that teaching moment was legit. Anakin's weakness has always been him being too brash and wanting to prove himself. It wasnt a big me little you thing. It was wisdom. While Obi wan is a devout Jedi, this wasn't one of the things that reflect that characteristic that you mentioned about being unwilling to admit defeat. Again I like the idea, but this just wasn't the angle/circumstance portrayed in the scene.
I'm not sure how you've come up with this. Anakin blindly attacks with no strategy/ understanding of his opponents weaknesses and strengths. This has less to do with why the Jedi lost and more to do with why Anakin/Vader is always bested by Kenobi in the moments witnessed on-screen and why he never surpasses Palpatine despite being innately more powerful than both. Kenobi accepts his limitations, seeks to use his wits and guidance through the force.
I'm lost as to why this is a question at all? Anakin did not win that sparring session. Even when Obi Wan lost his weapo, he was able to overcome anakin and take his weapon from him and it was clear on anakins face that he knew he in fact lost.
Why is everyone in the comments saying this? It's like they missed the whole point of the question. It's not about Obi Wan tricking Anakin or anything, it's about how Obi Wan lost in the lightsaber fight. The question is actually: "How is Anakin a better duelist than Obi Wan before episode 2."

Kenobi also stated maybe I stand more of a chance this time implying Anakin won the duel earlier. Anakin also would have kept on fighting using Kenobis lightsaber but Kenobi ended the match.
Whatever lesson Kenobi was trying to teach here, this was obviously the wrong approach. When he disarmed Kenobi, Anakin could have immediately sliced him, inflicting at least a minor burn on Kenobi (as I assume that the sabres were on their lowest setting) to represent what would have been a killing stroke in a real-life situation. Instead, he waited for Kenobi's concession, whereupon Kenobi used a sneaky trick on him. The most obvious lesson is therefore, "Never be merciful; when your opponent is at a disadvantage, strike him down immediately." Basically, Kenobi's trick would logically indicate to Anakin that he should be MORE aggressive and pitiless, not less. No wonder Anakin became ever more lethal (e.g., killing a disarmed Dooku). Kenobi was a great swordsman, but in the end, even he realized that he was a bad teacher ("I thought that I could be as good a teacher as Yoda. I was wrong"). That was Kenobi's arrogance. Kenobi overestimated his teaching abilities as much as Anakin overestimated his learning abilities.
I feel by the time Anakin beat Obi-wan in the flash back duel we saw in Ep V was because he wasn’t fighting with blind rage like he was in Ep III on Mustafar thus fighting more with rage cause him to lose against his former master
The obi wan fighting in in this scene is before episòde 2 you can seebobi wan still has his padawan lightsaber and anakin still has all his limbs anakin has the same attitude in this sparring session as he did against dooku
There’s definitely a little bit but not much left of Anakin still in there in some scenes. these flashbacks seem to be in Vader’s point of view. Viewing how Obi-wan was always patient in combat .And how Anakin was always at the feat of rage and never waited out the duel. His anger definitely made him more powerful but it definitely came at a cost which could be why he is thinking of these flashbacks.
the thing is, Anakin isn't even in his prime yet, wearing him down won't come anytime soon. his loss to Dooku also served as an valuable lesson to Anakin, since with Obi-Wan he could go all out and keep going on the offense, but with Dooku where the stakes were real, both would strike to kill, not disarm. (granted, Dooku wasn't aiming at killing Anakin, so it was still skewed in the favor of Anakin since Dooku had to take it easy because of Sidious) this loss taught him that pure aggression isn't gonna win him many favors, so he chilled a bit and became more calculated (like how we see it in the Clone Wars, where Anakin actually is an smart fighter, unless he gets blinded by rage) and then Revenge of the Sith, Anakin had gained more power through the dark side, he was getting drunk on power and with that comes arrogant once more, Dooku lost because he was simply overwhelmed and couldn't keep up with an Anakin that was stronger than ever, on top of having the entire Clone War conflict as battle experience. Obi-Wan could keep up with Anakin due to him being an master of form 3, which works wonders when your opponent only goes for the offensive, it would be less effective against Dooku since then it would basically be an stalement for a lot of the time, where Dooku wants to turn Obi-Wans strikes into his power, while Obi-wan is waiting for Dooku to make the 1st move. then also when Obi-wan is goating Anakin, having an actual dialouge for a bit, before realizing he'll lose if this conflict continues in these conditions, so he jumped to safety (the dreaded high ground) and with an extremely arrogant Anakin, cocky and powerful, he does the 1 thing that he shouldn't have done. 1 thing i liked though was how Vader could just hold the ship in place instantly, pull it down and rip it to shreds, what i didn't like is how he didn't do the same to the 2nd ship, since it was only a few meters away from him, much farther than the 1st ship.
Actually according to Nick Gillard Anakin was weaker when he faced Obi-Wan. Contrary to popular belief Anakin was very well-rounded fighter during his Dooku fight and even Operation Knightfall. At this point Anakin was almost unbeatable. He was level 9 during that time. When he fought with Obi-Wan he was level 8 only matching Obi. That's because Anakin was still a better lightsaber duelist but he was just as cocky and impatient as Anakin from AOTC.
I think he said something like winning isn't everything and that was the point of the episode. Obi wan knew his impatience and played off it. And also am I seeing something wrong here as I thought obi wan removed his light saber by the force at the end? So obi wan didn't disarm him? Wouldn't that count as him getting the upper hand or Anakin just let him?
obi-wan could have just woke up with a headache that day too, or allergies, who knows. amazing fight though. BUT I honestly think Obi-wan was just teaching Anakin a lesson and proved his point at the end of the fight.
It wasn't a defeat for Obi-Wan---It was a lesson taught from teacher to Padawan. The whole point of the duel was to show how Anakin was too headstrong for his own good. It played into how Kenobi knew Vader would not have the patience for a siege, rather, he would simply attack.

I wonder if some small part of Vader misses the time when he was just Obi-wan’s padawan before Sidious got to him and everything fell apart.
I think he does. And it makes hate himself even more.
if he does, it only serves to fuel his pain, anger, and hatred, thus drawing him even closer to the dark side.
I really hope they show more of these training sessions and show both characters grow in depth
Haven't seen the video yet but before I go in here are my options:
1 = it was a sparing session so obi wan wasn't going all out, until the end where he won.
@@nathangarrett9868 Plot armor defeated Anakin
Vader using the force to deflect and push back Reva's attacks like martial arts moves was a thing of beauty.

comments like this make me question should this dude even be covering this lol
There is more than one way to win a duel which Obi-Wan showed as he ended up with both light sabers before handing Anakin his back. Ego was always going to keep Anakin from being the greatest light saber duelist ever.
Yeah, totally! I feel the maker of this video somehow forgot, or missed the part where Obi-wan had Anakin's lightsaber in hand.

“In a lot of ways, I’m really ahead of him.”
-Anakin, Episode 2
Anakin was already more talented and more powerful than Obi Wan in the episode 2 era.
@@jasontaylor5713 lol no he isn’t the only reason he beat anakin is cuz of anakin mental state
@@jasontaylor5713 He lost to Dooku twice.
The words being
'You underestimate my new powers' oblivious to Obi-wan's true warning
'Don't try It Anakin, I have the high ground.'.
A few seconds later . . . an angry albeit useless torso left to die near an ocean of lava.
Darth Sidious: felt Vader's danger in the Force. This destroys the theory that Obiwan 'got lucky' and beat Vader. Obi-wan kept his initial words which were
' I will do what I must ' versus the Sith can ou see my new powers. "
Even Sidious said that Patience was the key. He keeps reminding Vader
'be patient my friend'.

Bro thats like saying grocu is stronger than yoda. Yes in raw power he prob is but not all together YET
Who is Anikan? Gheghis Kahn? Or you mean anakin Skywalker
In talent vs experience, experience should win. Only takes 1 sentence
That line about him focusing only on winning is the quote that can win the argument how and why a newly formed Darth Vader lost
on Mustafar Anakin was an absolute powerhouse.
He didnt beat him, it was a lesson and Kenobi won.
Anakin won he disarmed Kenobi winning the duel
Anakin disarmed kenobi and its confirmed he won more
Obi-Wan didn't lose though, as evidenced by the eventual conclusion of the dual in those flashback scenes.
Except... like this is just a spar? Why wouldn't it end once he's disarmed Obi-Wan?
If anything it sort of paints Obi-Wan in this really petty light.
Did you even watch the end of the duel?
@@Jonnodude1985 Yeah, I did.
Obi-Wan is disarmed, Anakin presume's the spar is over. But Obi-Wan is "Nuh huh, mu lesson." then surprises Anakin, spins around him knocks him forward and nicks his Lightsaber off him.

Loved the training session but I wish they would not have split it into parts. Having a full 3 minute scene would have been amazing
i agree but the training session wasnt anything special and its safe to assume theyve had several other training sessions that went a similar way, they had to break it up to show how the flaws affect their new encounter step by step, or else there would be no reason for their training scene to play if you get a summary first that u dont know is a summary yet then see a similar encounter play out
2:52 idk obi in epi 1 vs maul was very convincing but only after he tapped into the dark side , when Qui gon died . He became way more aggressive , It seems like he switched to form V in midfight against maul himself . With pinpoint precision he broke maul's saber in half .
Obi-Wan: It's over Anakin, I have the high ground.
Anakin: No. Ha, No.

This sparring match wasn't about winning or loosing, it was about the lesson that a Jedi, even without a weapon, is not helpless as long as he/she has the force. Obi Wan made a fantastic job in making Anakin aware of his headstrong approach which turned his thinking into tunnel vision.

this sparring match between anikin and obi-wan had to have taken place before the end of the attack of the clones film Ani still has his normal hand which he lost in the fight with count dooku at the climax of aotc. the anikin and obi-wan from this particular flashback might as well not even be the same people. they ended up fighting a bloody and vicious war which changed both of them. both in power and skill dramatically. also it was not a loss it was a lesson between a master and his student.
Anakin had the Natural Arrogance of youth at the time..When you’re a young man your supposed to be Cocky..
I always find it odd when people lament his impatience, recklessness and cockiness! He was a youth with unmatched powers and abilities…its inevitable he would be that way (and a miracle if he wasn’t)!! And as the years went on he would have likely learned patience etc through experience and maturity…as most of us do!!🤷🏻♀️
Do you have a link to that song you play at the very end of this video? So good.
As you mentioned about forms, Obi-Wan was still learning Soresu seeing that he changed only after Qui-Gon died. That was another big change compared here vs RoTS.

If you look at the timeline he hadn't mastered soresu at this point.
lol I feel like in a fight to the death the teacher would try a little harder no? xD
Obi wan won the sparring session and taught anakin that if he focuses on his future instead of the battle, then that would be his downfall.
No he clearly lost and got disarmed but Kenobi wanted to continue the fight Anakin didn’t want to hurt Obi Wan so he didn’t hit him with the lightsaber
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And when you look long into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you
If Obi-Wan beat Anakin on Mustafar because he was the smarter fighter....uh, doesn't that make him the better duelist? That's such a stupid argument lol. If you get outsmarted or you lose because your emotions got the best of you, you aren't better than the more intelligent/composed fighter. Obi-Wan defeated Anakin on Mustafar and in Episode 6 of Kenobi because he was the better duelist. Period. Anakin's strength and gifts in the force were not enough to overcome Obi-Wan's savviness
The flashbacks taking place before attack of the clones makes the most sense to me. Never really thought about that at all.
Obi Wan is the true sense of a Jedi. A true Jedi Master. All around..
Obiwan got the last laugh. I wouldn’t call it a victory for anakin.
well because he was clear-minded not have an evil tent in him at the time but when he turned to the dark side my guess is he had so many things happen in his mind him losing his mother people they worked with maybe him wanting to be a master he was obsessed with being a master in losing Ashoka hurt him too that had to do something too it. so yea a lot was happening in his mind when he changed to the dark side. remember old age comes with wisdom and strength I hear old master is featured in Chinese culture. hell, I am scared of my cousin's grandpa and aunt because they used to teach martial arts students on my mom's side with the Asian side.
my thoughts is imagine if he focused on the force more imagine how much more powerful he could have become
Anakin at the sparring session is older and stronger 🤣
Anakin looked like the worst 19 yo ever. The moment I saw that scene I laughed out loud
The flashback scene is kind of funny because you got a forty-year-old Padawan now trying to look like a 20 year old padawan. Both are still sad because padawans are usually in their teens.
Kenobi was in his 20’s and still a Padawan…🤷🏻♀️

Probably cuz Kenobi wasn't taking the spar seriously. Honestly they should CGI Christian said he looked way too old to be a Padawan he looked like an old man.
And to go further into his right hand being cut off, on Mustafar, after his limbs are cut off, it's only his right mechanical hand pulling him up
Everyone is like "Vader is so powerful!" But seems to forget that Obi-Wan is on par with him, defeating Anakin and Vader, time anfter time.
Despite not "training" nearly as much as Vader, and despite not being as ruthless as Vader is. They are very much equals.
Who wins depens on the form of the day (and script writing).
If Vader is so "strong with the force", also Obi-Wan is.
Everyone has to admit there lightsaber duels are more legit then anything we seen since Episode 3
He feels he has very little to teach him and that’s why he hits anakin with the big me, little you and says he will remain a padawan until he no longer “needs to prove himself.” Although obi-wan’s heart is in the right place, this duel shows the hypocrisy of the Jedi: unwilling to accept they are beaten until it’s too late.
don’t think that’s the angle they were going for bro but i like the idea
Kenobi accepts his limitations, seeks to use his wits and guidance through the force.
he didn't beat him...in fact, this was the very contrary ...what in a world are you talking about? 😅
Anakin is like Achilles. Obi-wan is like Odysseus.
This reminds me, which is rounder an orange or grapefruit, or the bowling ball, & billiard balls 🤔
Have you ever done a video on how a Jedi/Sith choose their Lightsaber form?
I was under the impression that Obi-Wan was the one who won that(those) duel(s) in the end (both the flashback duel and present day one)
Obi-wan v Anikin will forever be goated in all of action cinema🙌🏿

Obi-Wan had no high ground.
I want to see a Darth Vader vs Mace Windu duel👍🏻😊
Best episode of obi-wan kenobi is not only true, but it’s also the best Star Wars episode of anything released on Disney+ so far hands down!
Love your work!!!
Obi Wan allowed Anakin to WIN!! Never show your True Power until you need too!!
the thing is, Anakin isn't even in his prime yet, wearing him down won't come anytime soon.
his loss to Dooku also served as an valuable lesson to Anakin, since with Obi-Wan he could go all out and keep going on the offense, but with Dooku where the stakes were real, both would strike to kill, not disarm. (granted, Dooku wasn't aiming at killing Anakin, so it was still skewed in the favor of Anakin since Dooku had to take it easy because of Sidious)
this loss taught him that pure aggression isn't gonna win him many favors, so he chilled a bit and became more calculated (like how we see it in the Clone Wars, where Anakin actually is an smart fighter, unless he gets blinded by rage)
and then Revenge of the Sith, Anakin had gained more power through the dark side, he was getting drunk on power and with that comes arrogant once more, Dooku lost because he was simply overwhelmed and couldn't keep up with an Anakin that was stronger than ever, on top of having the entire Clone War conflict as battle experience.
Because obi wan didn’t have the high ground
