  • As his 1982 classic is named the 67th best song of the 1980s by a major TV network, John discusses how he originally wrote the song about an interracial couple but had to change it because that subject matter was too controversial for the early '80s. This clip includes commentary from Hall and Oates and Zac Hanson.

That song is a masterpiece. The reason it rings so strong is that everyone young or old can relate to it. If we were like this at 16 we understand it, if we're 75 we remember and acknowledge that life goes on long after the thrill is gone. (BTW I am happy with a life that is not thrilling. Been there, done that...old age too has its benefits.) We all know what youth is like, and this song captures it along with a level of wisdom you don't expect in youth. But it truly captures a time, place, relationship, ideals, hopes, dreams, and reality everyone can connect with.
(Note: I watched some 20's kids reacting to it -- "I wonder what a Tastee-Freez is..." LOL!)

Mick Ronson was instrumental in pulling this song together. Sadly missed.

WOW😮!! You should’ve done the biracial video, I wonder what it would’ve done to peoples perspective of love and fun and also being young. That’s a good story. Love this song.💯♥️♥️

This is not where the idea came from Diane and I met the man who put the idea on your desk mid 1970s in Ronkonkoma Long Island N.Y.

Did Ronson get any royalties or songwriting credit? Curious

No,Ronson on many occasions would be asked to "help out " various artists and in many cases not get credit, monetary or written credit on album.mellencamps manager (tony defries) had previously managed Ronson asked to play and arrange tracks for JCM

ngl Sunday radio made me hate this song. It's that sort of tune the dj puts on when they gotta pee, or they just hate their job and want to spread the misery.

that’s a highly ignorant comment. your reaction to a song is not the songs fault. or the DJ etc. be better
