Types of cancer - carcinomas, sarcomas etc.

  • We were a little too early with the TNM video - here is the usual classification of cancer types according to their tissue of origin:
    Most types of cancer are carcinomas (tumors of the epithelium), but also sarcomas (stromal tumors), leukemias and lymphomas ("liquid cancer": cancer of the blood-forming system) and CNS tumors (e.g. brain tumors) can be derived from their original tissue.
    10% of cancer types cannot be classified in this way; as examples we name melanoma (black skin cancer) and small-cell lung cancer (SCLC).
