Hi, this is Ice T for "Mower Shield." Unexpected repairs to your mower can be expensive. A new engine can be over $800, a new transmission more than a grand, and if you have a fire it can be over two thousand dollars! Let "Mower Shield" pay for that so you don't have to...
@13:37 The mower would be covered under the homeowners house policy but only if something sudden and catastrophic happened to the house and garage and the mower was in the garage, not by itself. Maybe Ronnie's Allpay No Coverage Insurance company would insure it.
Taryl good work on that mower. I wouldn't have the patience to deal with that amount of repair for sure. One question for you though, with the heat on that engine isn't the crank seal under the flywheel a concern? I would think that seal could have potentially melted or deformed as well as the lower crank seal too. Just a thought. This video is a good reminder that keeping your equipment clean is worth the time.
@7:30 Actually Taryl, one could say that that is bad design by the manufacturer that traps flammable debris near a source of ignition. A better design would incorporate a way for leaves and debris to not accumulate. I have the same gripe about my MTD riding mower that builds up cut grass around the mower belt. I'm constantly cleaning it out. I JUST WANT TO CUT GRASS NOT FOOL AROUND WITH MAINTENANCE EVERY %$#@ TIME I CUT GRASS!!! They can do it they choose not to.
On my new z920m the Kawasaki engine has vertical engine cooling fins so debris can fall out with gravity and also has removable covers to inspect and clean easily.
Hey Taryl! I have owned my John Deere since 2006. It is always in the shed when it is not in use. Why knuckle heads leave power equipment outside is beyond me! I am with you on cleaning the mower after each use. I always use my leaf blower and blow off everything top to bottom and make sure fluffy doesn't have any extra debris to build his nest anywhere. A little extra time spent cleaning after each use, makes things last longer. And another thing, wash your equipment at least once a year grass rats! Take pride with your hard earned dollars you spend on this stuff!!
Well let's see the tractor burnt to a crisp! So just how were they supposed to drive it anywhere? How does cleaning it after you're done help you while you're using it? Where and when do you think all that crap gets on and in the mower? Could it be while you're using it? No!
@@1pcfred He means during the season...cleaning out the leaves ect would of saved this mower. If you clean it out after you're done theres not gonna be major buildup. This wasnt a one mow buildup.
@@baileyhatfield4273 all it takes is running through deep leaves once. You can have loads of debris in a mower in a heartbeat. Then all of your blowing won't amount to a hill of beans. Clean, dirty. Just like that.
I was a caretaker for a ranch and the owner used an old L100 until the spindles started to go and the deck started to rust out. His son bought him a new D100 but after a time it bogged down in some high grass, caught on fire and was destroyed. I found the old L100 in pretty bad disrepair, but with some reinforcement rings, new spindles, blades and other various repairs got it working again. The owner bought the L100 in 2004, and even though it's the old style splash lubricated (no oil filter) it continues to run to this day and I just used it to clear the grass around my property. It's like the Energizer Bunny👍.
As long as you keep fresh oil in it *that can still be splashed* you will do well. There's some that neglect oil changes but just add more to bring it up on the dipstick and then wonder why it lasts only 5-7 years. Well, that oil just got dirtier and dirtier, thicker, sludgier, so much so that the dipper just couldn't sling it around anymore and it was resistant to flow. Death to the engine will come prematurely.
Like you stated, if you didn't have a TH-cam channel you would not have tried to fix it. To much time on one project where as you could have fixed 3 other projects. But I'm glad that you made a video. Thanks
Amazing work Taryl. I thought for sure you'd get into it and discover much more wrong with it. I feel I need a total rebuild vid now. LOL However I figured it was literal toast when I saw the fire damage. Always looking forward to more content. Your videos helped me tremendously when I had leaky valve covers, sump and leaking head gaskets on my 2001 Intek Vtwin 22 hp garden tractor motor.

Winter is for getting your equipment repaired, running right, and ready for the mowing season. I never have any issues with my equipment during the winter partially because grass and weeds never stop growing down in the deep south so it gets ran all year round.
I’m always amazed at how people will buy expensive equipment and then never service it like it should be. Money comes hard for me and I’ve been accused of being obsessive about maintenance on my cars, trucks, and equipment. I keep meticulous records of all the maintenance and repairs that I have done over the years on my stuff and because of that I can get top dollar on any of my equipment that I decide to sell.
I have some of those hose pliers but never knew what they were for! For any type hose, cables or fittings, there should be a local hydraulic or hose supply business which would be a lot cheaper than OEM JD. Same for bearings, seals, clamps, filters etc.
So if they had it on fire once what's the possibility of it burning up again. And how long will the mower work before some of the parts stop working. IE: starter, alternator, clutch or transmission? Not to many John Deere parts to replace? How much is the seat and side panels add to make it look a bit cleaner? Awesome save!
Great video 👍. My 20 year old cub cadet has a problem again. It won't go up hills again. I had it fixed last year with the same problem. They put on all new belts and pulleys. It worked fine until again a year to the week later. It's not the transmission. Any idea what is wrong? Thanks for your time and help!!!
See if there's an idler pulley tension spring on your drive belt. If there is you might need a new one. Because when those springs get weak your tractor will lose momentum. It'll feel like the transmission is dead. But it's just that spring not making the belt tight. The belt will feel tight. I know mine did. But the tractor wouldn't go worth a damn. When I replaced that spring it went again.
Oh yes-I have had “muffins” ignite leaves and when I was finishing mowing a lawn near dusk with a B7S motored mower-that muffin was glowing and blue flames coming out of the muffin-this was like 40 hrs ago. Moved the mower and stomped out the flames. Then finished wetting the area with a hose. Also have had B&S motor burn up-the local mower shop rebuilt it! Ran like new!
Loved the life lesson from Doctor Dactyl at the beginning. That video reminded me of reading, 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens. It was so good that you are kind of sad when it finally ends.
I have the crimp connector kit that is also heat shrink for male, female, and butt connectors. This makes it easier than soldering. I do still occasionally solder with an iron if neeeded.
Yes!!! I've been waiting weeks hoping you would do a fix it video of this burned down mower. I put a new wiring harness, oil tube, fuel filter and lines, carb cover, pre-filter, and heat shrinked all the burnt wires and fixed a 2006 Simplicity Conquest 20hp Briggs vanguard. The flames were engulfing the engine and the engine had been running for hours mowing so everything was hot. We had to use a cold water hose to put it out and nothing on that freaking vanguard cracked. Best part is all the shrouds and covers are metal except the fan(barely melted, reused it)and a little 20 dollar carb cover that is just a spot to put the vanguard sticker decal lol They are not killable. Best v twin cylinder engine ever made.
An oil leak and 20 years of grass packed around the exhaust pipes did it to our mower. We bought it used in really good shape but didn't know that grass could get packed all the way up under the engine like it did.
I ordered some replacement wire to repair a John Deere throttle cable and it wouldn't fit inside the protective shield. I wanted to try and repair instead of ordering a new part. I also wanted to try and use the Z bender as well. I couldn't wait to see about swapping this ire out for the correct size. The local hardware here had some but they were also to big to fit inside the protective shielding. I ordered the smallest wire you shown in your store, but didn't fit.
Hi Taryl N.O.P.E. is so apt. So many problems could be stopped with a bit of simple after using maintenance. Lube hedge trimmer blades as they may stick after cutting sticky greenery. Clear the crap around a chainsaws discharge area and add extra lube if you've been cutting resinous material, as I had a chainsaw oiling mech stop working because it was gummed up. Maybe a series on simple after work maintenance ?😁
I inherited my dads 2009 38" MTD riding lawn mower. I keep the maintenance up on it and almost every time out have to either blow with air or hose off with water all the grass clippings that accumulate on the mower deck. If I don't then the clippings actually start to burn the mower deck drive belt and make a wet muck that rots the deck.
I think your customer should pay someone to mow their lawn. Can't belive they let that huge expensive zero turn burn and just sit over the winter to damage it even more.
Don’t we love the plastic fan end bell shroud and plastic fan that goes over cylinders that get HOT-remember when Briggs and Scrapum used to make METAL FANS and METAL motor end bell fan shrouds?
On connecting wires like you did, solderstick makes a connector that looks kinda like a butt connector. It has a clear body. In the center there is a solder strip. Slide your stripped wires in from each side. Use heat from a lighter or heat gun to melt the solder. As you do this the body shrinks and has a water proof seal at each end. Does everything at one step.

Hi ya Taryl. I've been workin on small engines for a bit over 25 years, with a decade hiatus. I have come across a issue I have never seen. I have a 2020 Craftsman (MTD) with a 5400 Series Kohler KS540-3011. If caught early it would have been nothing more than an oil seal. Short story is the crankshaft has seized to the crankcase, no seriously, the output shaft has become part of the block at this point. Any ideas on how to separate them without losing too much aluminum from the case. I have not been able to locate a short block. I am considering swapping an old CV13S and using it around the yard, f I am unable to save the KS.
Those hose pliers are awesome, I got a set cause ol mustie uses em and boy does it make things easier. Good luck with the mess, have a little bigger project that got a little hot too I'm working on.
Thank you for being honest about You-Tube support making the difference on whether to take on this repair or not. I flip lawn and garden equipment on the side and profits can be thin depending on condition. I'm not a hack, I don't sell junk, and I stand behind everything I sell. While I make profit in the end, I know I couldn't live off doing this as a full time business. Health insurance alone would break me, not to mention the cost of a building. Plus I like bringing old stuff back to life, especially tillers, and getting them back to work. The new flimsy junk being sold now just irritates me to work on sometimes. It's like they intentionally designed it to be difficult (which I know you made at least one skit about) and thrown away when it stops working rather than be repaired. I'll take the old cast iron/heavy steel any day. My current two projects are a '68 Sears (Magna America Corp) Roto Spader and a '85 Huskee (Parmi) field mower. Sold a '62 monkey ward (Gilson) tiller a few weeks ago. You have to play detective to source parts sometimes, but the satisfaction in the end is worth it.
Those hose pliers are great! Mustie1 showed them a few years back and I immediately ran out and got me a set of 3. Anyone who works on equipment of any kind need a set.
I was a chimney sweep for as long as you have been working on small engines the same thing, they would wait for the first frost to call. “Can you come out here on Saturday “ it’s an emergency. started telling them my wife asked if I wanted to be married to her or the business, they usually got the point. A lack of preparation on your part doesn’t constitute an emergency on my part!
I always blow off my Ferris after each use. I park inside, so no leaf issue, but I have found that fluffy is much less likely to build a nest in the engine if she doesn't have a bunch of perfectly cut grass laying on the deck, just a foot away.
So the estimate of the repair AS I STATED IN THE VIDEO was at the high end of the estimate. @13:37 The mower would be covered under the homeowners house policy but only if something sudden and catastrophic happened to the house and garage and the mower was in the garage, not by itself.
Maybe Ronnie's Allpay No Coverage Insurance company would insure it.
The ever so tender readings of the Brakes & ScrapEm love notes had me in tears... lol
Your right we do want to see you fix that burned thing and you enjoy a big challenge as well.
Awesome! Ive got 2- 1968 Chrysler 20's look just like that! I get 24 mph on my Sea Nymph 14R with only myself in the boat. Nice motor!
Taryl, when you said, "drum roll please", I was expecting to see a metal oil drum rolling towards you.😀
I really enjoy watching a true master at his craft
Thank you for sharing.👍
@@FishFind3000 this Briggs has removable inspection covers
Big box John Deere. Junk.
I love how Taryl is lecturing the customer on video. Hope the customer doesn't see this. Or maybe he'll agree he was a knucklehead.
It’s a costly mistake in the hard times we’re in but it’s a learning lesson for everyone
Yeah only a knucklehead does yardwork. Just let the grass grow up to your eyeballs and leave the leaves where they fall. Ya chuckle head.
LOL
However I figured it was literal toast when I saw the fire damage.
Always looking forward to more content. Your videos helped me tremendously when I had leaky valve covers, sump and leaking head gaskets on my 2001 Intek Vtwin 22 hp garden tractor motor.
Yeah when my mower burnt everything in the carburetor melted. When I opened up the bowl it was like Salvador Dali was doing sculpture in there.
Great work, Mr Taryl. We enjoyed this entire video. Amazing. I doze off a little. But truly enjoyed your cast members. Some of your jokes are corny, But, this is what makes your production extra fun while learning.
Taryls University Fixes All. Stay well and safe hero.
Winter is for getting your equipment repaired, running right, and ready for the mowing season. I never have any issues with my equipment during the winter partially because grass and weeds never stop growing down in the deep south so it gets ran all year round.
Do you have a snow mower?
It's not the
transmission.
Awesome job on that mower God Bless you and your family
Thanks for a great video! Liked seeing the complete process. I Learned something.
Best part is all the shrouds and covers are metal except the fan(barely melted, reused it)and a little 20 dollar carb cover that is just a spot to put the vanguard sticker decal lol
They are not killable.
We enjoy watching you jump and dance in the spring though. makes for good video
Better 1 + hour movie than Hollywood can put out. 🤠
Hi Taryl
Great job on that repair and saving the customer thousands of dollars if he would have had to buy a new one…👍👍
Good job Taryl and I'll have to remember that ''Hillbilly fire alarm'' the next time one of my customers get careless, lol! From Sophia, N.C.
Great job! The customer will be very happy.
Maybe the leaf sensor on the muffkin overheated?
Don’t we love the plastic fan end bell shroud and plastic fan that goes over cylinders that get HOT-remember when Briggs and Scrapum used to make METAL FANS and METAL motor end bell fan shrouds?
On connecting wires like you did, solderstick makes a connector that looks kinda like a butt connector. It has a clear body. In the center there is a solder strip. Slide your stripped wires in from each side. Use heat from a lighter or heat gun to melt the solder. As you do this the body shrinks and has a water proof seal at each end.
Does everything at one step.
I love this channel!
I hate the Gravely 660 Rocking chair junk with no air ride, very ruff on the back and HEAVY AND HARD TO STOP ON THE DIME WITHOUT TEARING UP THE CUSTOMERS YARD....16GRAND HUNK OF JUNK.
WOOOOOOO😂
Would anyone know the name/brand of the ramp on white pickup truck (video minute 1:20) ... used to have one for loading mowers. Thx
That Hillbilly fire alarm made me LOL. Man, I always blown mine off after I mow.
So tell me Einstein, how's that help while you're mowing?
That sucker, I mean customer needs to count his blessings, you're a good man Taryl no matter what your brother says about you.
🤣😂👍
The Key ! Preventative Maintenance / You are Best Taryl Thank You
Hi ya Taryl.
Just replace the whole engine. Not worth trying go repair it
Those hose pliers are awesome, I got a set cause ol mustie uses em and boy does it make things easier.
Anyone who works on equipment of any kind need a set.
well done y brother.peace an love from scotland.
