I think the propane/natural gas conversion is a good idea since you never know when your electricity may go out and you need to run it. The gasoline goes stale after a while, but the propane/natural gas will not be affected with time. Excellent video Taryl!
You guys are nutz... I have a 3500 watt Honda genny that I bought in 1991. I change the gas every Spring and Fall. Nice upgrade. Thanks for covering this Taryl. You’ll be a plumber soon! A recommended upgrade, get a quick disconnect for your gas cylinder for quick changes. Remember, propane and natural gas is less energy dense so your generator won’t be able to reach maximum output.
You lose around 10% of maximum power on propane and another 10% on natural gas, roughly, assuming your motor is matched to the gen head. If the motor is oversized then you might not lose as much or any. For example, you need around 10 hp for a 5kw gen but on NG your 10 hp motor is now an 8 hp motor so now you have a 4kw gen. If your 5kw gen comes with an oversized 12 hp motor (most don't) then you wouldn't lose anything.
Wow, this brings back old memories. Back in the 60's When I worked for the City of Tampa repairing parking meters, we had one similar to the the one you showed here. We used it to reset parking meter posts that had been bent or broke off. The attachments we had were an electric pavement breaker, and a rotating rock drill. We would throw the propane powered generator in the back of our Cushman Truckster along with a small mixing tub, hoe, shovel, some Sack Crete, water and we were in business. The unit worked flawlessly for years with only routine maintenance. No propane issues. We had a safety device ( 3" pipe coupling with 2 pieces of angle iron, one welded on each side of the coupling. You would place one foot on each side of the coupling on the angle iron and insert the rock drill into the coupling before pulling the trigger) for the rock drill to keep you from pounding your foot instead of the payment. Ha Ha BTY my buddy found out the hard way. OUCH! Thanks again for the memories.😊
42:07- Yes Sir, you are correct once again. Propane has a higher pressure than Natural Gas. BTW, I'm spending my 4th of July weekend enjoying watching this video just for the enjoyment factor! Thank you Taryl!
Just bought THAT same generator for 35 clams off of the marketplace! The owner just wanted it gone due to carb issues which made it a steal. After cleaning the carb it does run fine for me, but rather than run that ethanol crap through it and having to run it dry or drain it after every use or even worse chance having it clog up again, I’m going to convert it to propane. That’ll be a dream come true, so thanks for running us through hookup Taryl. Im one happy grassrat now, too easy!
Ethanol gas is junk. After about 30 days sitting in the hot humid summer weather, it gets nasty. However if stored over the winter, I've had no problems using it up in the spring if I add fresh fuel to it in my mower. I think the reason is fresh gas used the same day from a gas station has no water in it (yet), and that 10% alcohol will dissolve any gunk and absorb what little water gets into the fuel during the dry cold winter months.
Thanks for the video on the conversion kit! I've always wanted to know if it was worth the effort, but the idea of never having a tank of stale fuel when I really needed a generator, was what convinced me to pursue doing this, plus the smooth running and effortless starting you demonstrated! Thanks Taryl! 😁
My in-laws live 'Up North' as we call it. They have a small generator skid, but if it doesn't get started regularly, which it hasn't, the gas and anything that touches gas goes bad...I seriously could have used this video about a year ago. They junked the generator, and purchased a new one that can run on propane, and had a line installed off the propane line that already goes into the house. Could have saved a ton of money with this video and the help of me, their no-good son-in-law, heh.
I LOVE THAT SETUP, IT'S A NO-BRAINER. NO MORE FUEL TROUBLE. THE HELL WITH GASOLINE. I'M GOING TO GET MYSELF A KIT. BUILD A BOX FOR THE GENERATOR, I WONDER IF IT RUNS A LITTLE COOLER, WITH THE PROPANE. I'M GOING TO USE NATURAL GAS FOR MINE. 🤔 TARYL, THAT WAS SO FUNNY USING THE DIAGNOSTIC WHEAL AT THE END. PRICE LESS. THANKS AGAIN TARYL.
Use NG at my home, cost is cheaper than propane to keep furnace, ac, freezers, kitchen, etc...5 years now. Quick connect fittings. Upgraded to tri fuel generator 13000 watt, and transfer switch at electrical panel. Awesome setup
Great Video with valuable information Taryl. I did mention you when I ordered my kit and was told they have received several orders and appreciate the plug. My kit arrived today and I will be installing it soon. Thanks again!
This might be a stupid question but it just popped in ..my head ..I wonder if lights can be put on a push mower...it's been so hot to work during the day lol
If it's electric start, yes, but the alternator may not make enough electricity to power them to a useful brightness. Also, you'd probably be sacrificing charging the battery in the process. The alternator might be swapped-out with a higher-output unit, but more engine power used to make electricity is less available to spin the blade. If it's pull start only, you'd need to add an alternator, which is a stator, new flywheel and probably some sort of regulator/rectifier (which may or may not be included with the stator). The flywheel should be a straight swap, but there's a good chance the engine will need modification to mount the stator. A rectifier should just tuck under the flywheel while a regulator is easily mounted just about anywhere. Finally, incandescent lights are pretty agnostic and forgiving about the electricity you feed them, so long as the voltage is relatively close to rated. However, they use 7-10x the power as LEDs for the same light output. LED's on the other hand, depending on the support circuitry running them, may require DC only at a pretty consistent and stable voltage. I wouldn't run LEDs with just a rectifier unless the support circuitry was specifically designed to handle the output. Of course, there's always just slapping some battery-powered/rechargeable lights on it.
I've been eyeing this kit, and others like it, for a few years....glad to see it's not a scam, as some of those websites look like they haven't been updated in forever. I'm still curious how that setup with the fixed adjustment handles changing loads....it seems to have done well with the saw, but that wasn't a huge challenge for a 7,000 watt generator.
I run my log splitter and lawn tractor on propane. I just took out the float needle and ran the propane straight in the carb. Its more finiky then doing it properly. Getting the mix right when starting is tricky but when its running its fine.
Thanks for video on LP kit. Had been thinking of doing a conversion for years but seeing this got the ball rolling. Just ordered one for my generator. Cant wait till it gets delivered. Maybe you could come and help me install. I got cold Hamm's waiting.
Taryl I really enjoy your videos and have been watching them for 2 years. I have been converting engines to propane for 40 years. I am not an expert but I have learned a lot. The method shown is the correct and safe way to do it. Tho without any provision for automatic fuel cut off the operator needs to be very diligent to shut off the valve on the tank when not in use. Because propane runs higher cylinder head temperatures than gasoline one or two colder heat ranges of spark plugs helps the engine run much better. Also iridium plugs help starting. I 1987 Honda TRX 350 I converted 5 years ago that I plow snow with. Runs great and uses less fuel.
It's nice not having to worry about gas breaking down and clogging things up! Next stop after modding this is to put an interlock switch on your breaker box so you can connect the generator to it and pick which parts of your house you'd like to run in the event of a power outage. I had that done for about $250 and it's a nice piece of mind!!
@@warrenvalentino5763 the interlock switch for the panel is much cheaper than a transfer box. My genny isnt big enough to power the entire house so I just switch off all the breakers and then switch on the rooms I want to run, pretty cool!
@@masterofnonetv8361 =>That's exactly what I have. Deb and I thought the same thing, our home in Greenwich we buried a 1000 gallon propane tank, converted everything over as I ran black pope in addition to leaving the electrical hook ups in place. So one fill up in August ran us the whole year with no top offs. We sold and moved back to Salem, and installed an above ground tank 1000 gallon. Same as before one fill up, good for the year. If I convert my 10,000 watt Northern Tool generator we may install another 1000 for the Gen set. I'm not mixing the two supplies heat and generator.
I put one of those kits on once. I must have had the wrong size tank or kit as I had to run it with the choke partially on so it wouldn’t surge. It was a 10hp Briggs flathead I was using it to build a house it ran so lean/hot that it smoked the exhaust valve and lost compression. By the time it stopped running I had permanent power so I gave it to my brother he lapped the valves and removed the propane parts and ran it out n gas at his off grid cabin
Notice how much smoother it runs. I have installed 2 kits from @USCarburetion and they work great. I used the Motor Snorkel version that requires NO modification to the air box or generator frame. I wouldn't tie the feed hose to the frame as there is a lot of rockin' & rollin' going on with the rubber engine mounts, might rub through the feed hose. Tip: Make sure ALL sources of possible infiltration are closed off, ie. bowl drain & fuel shutoff valve.
yes anything that can leak air into the system like that can cause it to run lean. Which is not a good idea on gaseous fuels like natural gas or propane since they're considered 'dry' fuels and you can burn up exhaust valves running an engine too lean on LP or Nat gas. Too rich isn't good either, gets things clogged up with soot, especially those spark arrestor screens.
Love watching your videos. I have a Dixie chopper efi that seems to have an excessive amount of fuel pressure runs for 15 min then quits. Still has spark and when you take plugs out they are wet. It’s a 2002 where the pressure regulator is separate from fuel pump. I ordered a new one but not here yet. Do a video on that please. It would mean a lot to me.
Great reply, good point and thoughtful comments. In the farm tractors that needed beu coup torgue late 60's to middle 70's, and now many natural gas companies use it for their vehicles. Lawn mowers maybe not:)
Nice work Taryl. I'd like to put one of theses on my riding mower .I get tired of messing with carburetor every mowing season. I like propane the oil always stays brown, an the fuel systems last along time. Can't say how many times I spent so much on carb problems.
I am very happy to see this. Your tightening the fittings Tooo tight my friend. There is only ounces of pressure, not pounds of pressure. The problem is the threads are being stretched and damage to fittings. Put the 10 and 12 inch crescent away , and grab the 6 and 8 inch. Snug is all that's required.
Another thing I didn't even know existed..... I have duel fuel, but one of my neighbors was talking about if there was a way to convert to propane.... I guess there is!!!! Nice job!
@@restaurantattheendofthegalaxy People are very interested in propane gas, because it stores forever. Taryl has already broken down how short the life span of liquid gasoline is....
Super idea. Kits have been around for a while now. Watching you assemble it make the rest of us feel more comfortable about doing it ourselves. I have a genset with a 6 cylinder IH engine set up with propane. Works great. No stale fuel. 👍
One word of caution. If someone is converting a Honda generator or other power equipment, and it has electric start, a different flywheel may be required as the timing is different for LP or CNG. We had two new pressure washers that we had converted to propane, and the mechanic couldn't get it to run properly. He's done lots of small engine repairs, but this was a first for him. After purchasing new flywheels, the engines actually ran well, and have been doing well since. This mostly applies to Honda engines less than 10 years old, and possibly engines that have had an electric start kit installed. The difference between the two is the location of the keyway on the flywheel. We thought about getting new keyways broached in, but opted for new flywheels. Our pressure washers did not have two regulators in the kit, but all of our pressure washers use forklift LP tanks and high pressure hose assemblies to the regulator.
Electric start has nothing to do with the timing. On gens, it doesn't seem like propane changes the timing enough for you to need to change the flywheel. You can get offset woodruff keys so you don't have to actually change the whole flywheel to advance the spark. Some ppl say you should reduce the spark gap by about 25%, so if you are running 0.030 then down to 0.023.
Interesting video. When I was a kid growing up in the mid 50's (I'm 77) all our tractors (Moline) ran on Propane. I don't remember any problems with them.
Hey buddy nice job I'm a small engine guy too since building race carts and converting 5HP Briggs to push the max hp. With horseman cams flat heads w copper head gaskets valves jobs straight pipes etc. At the time I was 11 years old now 52 working on diesel engine. How much would a conversion from gasoline to multifuel. Cost like with shop rate +/- 180.00 or is that high end. Like 1.5 to 2 hours max start to finish
Surprising that the kit used the old fashioned left hand thread connector for the barbeque tank. Almost all now have the right hand square threads... you can see it at 47:55. The LH threads will just confuse the users especially young guys who have never seen it before.
The old fashioned left hand threaded stuff is still used, even on brand new propane regulators for things like grills and heaters. The right hand square fittings are used on propane powered motive equipment like forklifts. That's why propane tanks have both types of connectors.
I changed the tank connection on the regulator to the tool less kind, makes changing tanks easy. Gotta keep plenty of propane for the patio cookers for making beer and distilling..... (er) water....yes distilling water not rocket fuel!
I bought the one with the carburetor snorkel. Not the donut. It hasn't been used, but all set up. They told me if the generator is new you have to run it on gas for four hours before conversion., 4K watt craftsman. Thanks for video, reminds me of something I didn't follow through on. taheyheyhey! 🍺
Great video as always. I think you still put the gasket between the propane adapter and the air cleaner box on wrong. Maybe it should have been flipped 180 left to right instead of up and down? It will work, as the hole lined up with the bore, just looked like not much sealing surface in a couple areas and the gasket hanging out in a a couple other areas
Great job Taryl! I want to buy that kit for my Predator 9000 but I want to connect it to natural gas. Instead of using a Ty Rap to secure the fuel hose you should use an Adel clamp and a self tapping sheet metal screw, It would do a better job and look more professional.
Great Video!!! Does the gas keep feeding when you turn it off because i noticed you didnt turn the valve off. Just wondering because the tank is under pressure???

It’s a 2002 where the pressure regulator is separate from fuel pump. I ordered a new one but not here yet. Do a video on that please. It would mean a lot to me.
Awesome kit. Perfect for a machine that just sits a lot. Thanks
Sorry i won’t ever do that again. Next time I’ll check with you first . 😂
@@TarylFixesAllYou must also have a "load block" adjuster to change from propane to NG, and back again.
@@TarylFixesAllThe "power valve" adjuster IS the "load block". 😉
@@TarylFixesAllThat IS a model "KN" regulator. It's the same as my new one. Just in case you need parts for it some day.
Another thing I didn't even know existed.....
I have duel fuel, but one of my neighbors was talking about if there was a way to convert to propane....
I guess there is!!!! Nice job!
First I’ve ever heard of it either. It I guess it makes sense.
Our pressure washers did not have two regulators in the kit, but all of our pressure washers use forklift LP tanks and high pressure hose assemblies to the regulator.
to change the timming on any combustion motor with out changing the flywheel or distrbutor is to change the spark plug gap like he did.
Was thinking must be a timing issue. 😅
I imagine fabing an offset plate to mount the coil might work too. Cheaper than the flywheel, and no sacrificing strength in the shaft key.
Interesting video. When I was a kid growing up in the mid 50's (I'm 77) all our tractors (Moline) ran on Propane. I don't remember any problems with them.
Well done, as always!
Internal threads are left handed, external are right handed
The old fashioned left hand threaded stuff is still used, even on brand new propane regulators for things like grills and heaters. The right hand square fittings are used on propane powered motive equipment like forklifts. That's why propane tanks have both types of connectors.
Pretty neat device Taryl. I may convert my All-Power. 3250 watt generator to propane. Thanks for posting this. Keep up the good work.
Thanks taryl it was a nice teaching lesson with that conversion, keep up the good work. 🙏👍🍺
I’m going to do one on older Briggs generator, mine will go thru carb bowl , very informative video, thanks
Pretty cool. I didn't know there were conversion kits like this. Keep up the great work. That ending was Awesome!
That is a great idea! No more trouble with the carb getting gummed up and not working. I think I will get one.
love watching your video's, learn a lot from you guys.. keep em coming Taryl....
I love it when Taryl gets the jobs done. ❤ Taryl 2024
I have no generator, but I enjoyed watching the installation.
Got one of these conversion kits from the same company about five years ago and it was the best investment I could have ever made for my generator.
Very nice conversion!
Thank you. All your videos are very informative. I’d love to meet you someday and talk shop
I like the propane conversion thank
I am gonna call them and order a kit for my generator. Thanks Taryl
great video good plumbing job your the best
Great video as always. I think you still put the gasket between the propane adapter and the air cleaner box on wrong. Maybe it should have been flipped 180 left to right instead of up and down? It will work, as the hole lined up with the bore, just looked like not much sealing surface in a couple areas and the gasket hanging out in a a couple other areas
Yeah, it was flipped 180 in x and y and he only flipped it back in x.
Great job Taryl! I want to buy that kit for my Predator 9000 but I want to connect it to natural gas. Instead of using a Ty Rap to secure the fuel hose you should use an Adel clamp and a self tapping sheet metal screw, It would do a better job and look more professional.
I ate some Polish Sausage and woke up the next morning with a load😩 Nice video!
I like it.. I thinking about getting the kit.
Awesome video, good splaining!!
Great Video!!! Does the gas keep feeding when you turn it off because i noticed you didnt turn the valve off. Just wondering because the tank is under pressure???
I have a generator and looking towards the kit, but I'm really interested in the diagnostic tool, I could put one of those to good use!
Hi Taryl! Thank You Very Much for making and for the info in this video. love watching your videos! keep up the good work! There's Your Dinner!!
Nice kit. They seem to have thought of everything.
I like the conversion kit. Seem straight forward. I buy it! The wheel gives off a sponge Bob vive! “ all hail the magical conch” I mean Gordy gives all kinds of business to tyral! That is why he is still a round. Ooh and Ronnie is a stress reliever! Plus he is hard to kill like the roach.
