  • In "Scruffy Won't Take Closed For An Answer", Taryl obtains this vintage Wisconsin engine from Elk Skins and sees if he can get it running. Parts are hard to come by so he'll try his best to get this old reliable engine running off what little he has. Can he make it work? Taryl IS the MacGyver of small engines, but sometimes even MacGyver faces some pretty tough challenges that he may or may not be able to overcome... Tune in for that!
    Prior to and after the attempt, Taryl has to exit the shop to aid Junior who's broke down on a pick-up before local yokel Scruffy comes by in a hurry. He sure gets angry and decides to take it out on a customer's mower when he thinks that Taryl's not opening the door for him. See how it all plays out in this hilarious yet educational how-to video from your pals at Grass Rats Garage. Another classic that's bound to make you smile and knowledge that will stick with you forever. And as always... There's Your Dinner!!

    This channel really does deserve an Emmy award. This is the best diy, "program", on the, "airwaves". All due respect to Musti1 who does his videos sans a cameraman and certainly is a contender. In my opinion the videography gives Taryl and the grassrats crew the edge . Acting, characters and skits aside.

    Hey Taryl, Just wanted to thank you for a suggestion you gave regarding cleaning up valve seats using emery cloth and the valve to mimic the angle of the seat, to clean them up. It worked like a charm. Working on a Wisconsin ABS engine, virtually zero compression. Thanks to your recommendation, it has compression now!!!! Thanks you Sir!! Your videos are awesome by the way!! 👍🏻👍🏻

    Every think about getting a rear engine snapper and weld/mount an engine mounting plate to the front? You'd have a drivable test frame. You could make the engine mount a bit higher so you're not constantly stooped over working on an engine. Then when you're done you could drive the test frame out of the shop and park it next to MoTow.

    This brings back 1976 shop apprentice memories. Getting yelled at for using the boss’s extra thin Snap-on tapped wrenches to loosen a rusted deck bolt. “Not my Wisconsin tappet wrenches you numb skull!” Today I could sue, and own the shop for being traumatized. Well at least I remember what a tappet wrench is.

    I can't sufficiently express my gratitude for all your efforts to share your knowledge and experience with us, and do so in such an entertaining way. I have taken to watching everything and anything you create, even if I have no direct interest in the subject simply because I so enjoy your antics. I recently took to restoring lawn tractors as a hobby, just one at a time and selling them cheap, then starting over. Your programs have proven invaluable to these efforts. Please take yourself to a local purveyor of libations and treat yourself to a "cold beverage" on me. I would remove the spark plug and shoot oil on the stem. then exercise it(pushing it shut with a bent screwdriver) after just a bit it always started. these old wisconsin engines are great.

    I like to use a spray bottle with 2 stroke gas to mist the intake with fuel. Its much cheaper then carb spray and it's better for the engine plus it provides some lubricant for the top end. I know Taryl has been doing it this way for 40 years with zero issues. 😄love the videos!

    • @Hjerte_Verke
      @Hjerte_Verke 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Carb cleaner spray and even starting fluid (ether) are basically volatile solvents so using them on an engine that has been sitting for decades is not recommended because they dissolve whatever oil remnants might remain in the top end, but in the grand scheme, you're being super over-cautious. Rest assured, a friendly-to-the-channel channel, Mustie1, does indeed practice what you suggest. He uses two-cycle fuel as his go-to starting fluid.

    Once again the multi talented Dactyl family has put on another informative educational and highly entertaining production. They have given me countless hours of great fun while learning. They are all great Americans!!! Hope my comment does not get deleted or ghosted for using great and America in the same sentence. Maybe since i left out again the censors will not bounce me as usual. Thank you Dactyl family!!! Y'all are the very best!!

    Taryl, you need to make an ignition types video...battery ignition, magneto ignition, solid state, electronic, etc. Nice to get a shot of that MILWAUKEE powered ratchet.

    I restored one of those tra-12d's a few years ago. Was able to find new old stock parts. Runs great.

      @m9 ovich I would find an old service manual on line and find the part number that I needed. Then I would search that part number on ebay. Bolens parts and supplies is also a website that specializes in NOS and new Wisconsin parts. Hope this helps.

      Won't let me post a link in comments However if you go to google and search "wisconsin tra12d parts manual" the top website that will appear is a downloadable pdf containing torque specs and a parts breakdown of all tr and tra series engines. Hope this helps- Branjo.
