    A lot of folks don’t understand the function of those so called “gauge” wheels. They are actually anti-scalp wheels. You set the deck cutting height using the height adjuster in front of the seat, then you adjust the deck wheels so they ride just above the ground, not on it, when the deck is at the normal cutting height.

    • @MyChannel-d2e

    I used to own one, as well as a 420, 318, and 445. Now own a x730. You’ll be amazed at how much smoother it’ll ride and how much higher it sits if you upgrade it with the bigger tires like the 445 has factory. Night and day difference my friend! The cam for the valves are usually the one's that need to be changed. I did need a few special tools. I borrowed them took about 3 days to do the entire job. By myself. I know I'm slow. The design and power of this series of mowers was well designed, perhaps where metal instead of plastic was used. I have a similar model that needs a new engine or full rebuild. What I like is the blade configure and how clippings are moved from the swath. The hydralic components of the 425 model you now own were very useful, as shown.

    Good idea. For a small garden tractor that little thing did ok with a loader. I loaded the tires with washer fluid and had some ballast on the rear as well. When mowing grass that high, raise your deck to the top for first cut. Put the shield on the Discharge Chute.
    Most would put on a new Oil Pressure Sending Switch before tearing down the entire engine. Sand that crank and install a new seal that would have been ruined by pulling it off that rusted snout. Good find on the Spring. Strange that the right front wheel has valve on inside and the Left Front had valve on the Outside. I have had to adjust the ridiculous Reverse Pedal. On the L and LA models they should be same height and there is a slot in a lever arm that allows this to be done. I much prefer the Fender mounted lever which was also cruise control. Lights are great. Hope the wiring can handle them. You did good on the price. Gutsy move to tear into the engine. Great to help folks. Don't see many 1960's Falcons!

    • @MyChannel-d2e
      @MyChannel-d2e  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      great tips! that part of the crank isn’t as wide so the seal doesn’t touch it (which I did replace). my Steiner has the lever mounted by the steering wheel like the 318 has but I really like being able to go back and forth with my foot it’s a lot easier and faster for me. you mite see a video on the falcon

      LED's pull a lot less current than filament bulbs. I hated the speed lever on 318's. Pedal is much better. That Kawasaki engine is great, once you replace the plastic gears. The rear crank bearing is hard to remove, but other than that they are a straight forward rebuild.

      This was my first time watching one of your videos. I'm impressed with your cleanliness and attention to detail when cleaning gaskets off. Also, what williamhill9432 said, about the speed of the video. Good job. The only suggestion I would have on this particular repair, would be replacing that spring instead of stretching it out again. The tensile strength is out of that one, and a new one would most likely be better. Also, it looked liked it had been quite a while since that oil was changed. Clean oil in an engine is a good insurance policy for no trouble. Not you fault, I know it came that way. With those new parts in there, it ought be good for another 1000 hours.

    I had the x 360 for many years. I would say it was the lawn mower from hell. Hydronic bed lift, power steering , crusise . It all started when I ran into a stomp and broke a steering arm in half and it was just a light bump. Then after mowing for an hour or so it would just shut down, I have replaced everything on this machine, the hydronic system, carb, plugs. Wires, and gas pump twice. Last week I sold it for 3000 , I could not believe it. I told the guy all that was repaired on the unit. Then I went to our local canadian tire and bought a Husqvarna 54 inch without hydronic bed lift and steering. With the 3000 I got for my old one and 1600 more I have a brand new unit with a 24 hp Kawasaki . I know my unit must have just been a lemon but all the hype about John Deere and all the head aches I have had with this machine, I just had to tell this story. So for anyone reading this, buy a machine with a a great motor and metal transmission and enjoy your summer.

    I wonder how many 285, 320, 345, 425, 445 liquid cooled kawasaki engines have been junked because the plastic cam gear broke and they assumed the engine was no good? The new cam gears have been steel since 1999 so no worries after the new cam is installed. I've done a few plastic to steel cam gear upgrades myself and its surprisingly easy to do.

    • @MyChannel-d2e

They just don’t build equipment to last anymore, seems like it’s done on purpose so it will fail quicker and we’ll have to pay a high repair cost or buy another expensive fail quick tractor ! One of the best videos I've seen on this subject. You're a very good mechanic and wouldn't hesitate to have you work on my equipment.
    I would add when you mentioned so many transmissions for this model being available that isn't necessarily due to the quality of the machine. Many of these are "parted out" for relatively minor reasons due to the parts being much more valuable individually than the whole tractor. Many "recyclers" purchase these machines just for that purpose. It's a shame but they do provide us with affordable parts. Something John Deere obviously won't do.

I have a 425 that I bought used as well, to go with my 445, that I have had for 25 years and it's still going strong. They are great tractors.
    I'm looking at a x738 to replace the 425 although I doubt I will let it go. Watching you tear into that engine was fascinating as a 66 year old construction guy that can take anything apart but putting it back together usually doesn't work out too well.
