Van Halen 9/8/1978 at Niagra Falls Convention Center, Niagara Falls, NY. Filmed by Speedy in super8 reels for his personal collection while working as a photographer in the 70s and 80s.

And there he stood, moved, ran, kneeled and jumped, effortlessly blowing our minds...Thank God for Eddie Van Halen who changed the world for so many.

I saw the '79 Van Halen II tour. My brother saw this tour (first Album), when they opened for Black Sabbath. We were "teens". My brother Phil exclaimed; Damn, I've never seen or heard anything like this! The Guitar Player (Ed) was on Fire!🔥 They blew Black Sabbath off the stage!

Saw VH a week earlier at the Philadelphia Spectrum. I can confirm they kicked Black Sabbath's butt like no other opening act! The whole band was awesome. EVH was from a different planet. The light show with the white lights from the drum riser was like a 5th member of the band. The light show for VH2 was even more intense! Hats off to the light show designer!!!!

And kudos to Sabbath for allowing VH to play encores on this tour, which was unusual for opening acts.

Wow! I was there. I grew up in Niagara Falls and we went to see Black Sabbath. As far as I'm concerned they blew BS off the stage. They were amazing. I saw them again the next year and I think they went to Buffalo (I went to so many concerts those couple of years). Then I saw them in 80 or 81 when they were in Bismark ND since I was in the USAF in Minot ND. These guys are great. Man, this brings back so many memories, thanks for posting this.

For all those people that think Eddie is just about his tapping you should know that during this entire 12 minute clip Eddie only tapped using two hands twice and in both instances it was very brief . That's it . Just goes to show he was just as incredible as a guitar player without tapping . He was truly one of a kind. RIP KING EDWARD.

Wow does this bring me back. I got the GIFT of seeing these guys on the 1st leg of the Black Sabbath/VH shows. They were on fire to say the least. Sabbath had no business headlining that concert. VH just assaulted the crowd....

@@RSTI191 well, for years he listed his date of birth as 1957. In his biography even. Some say he said he was older to play clubs. Al supposedly was born in 1955, and he and Dave were supposed to he the same age. Now Al is listed as born in 1953, and Dave 1954. Dave had been listed as born in 1955.

@@hollylewis5302 Most bootleg video footage from the 60s and 70s has no audio. If you are old enough to remember those decades, this was just the limitations of the Super 8mm cameras which were then state-of-the-art for portable cameras.

@@bigbigy58 Legend has it that Noel Monk supposedly had professionally recorded Van Halen concerts in his effects and at least one person claims to have seen bits of those shows at Monk’s house. But if that is the case, there is no proof that any of this material has ever been removed from Monk’s home. There Mike had claimed at one point that the whole Oakland ‘81 show was filmed, but everyone else in and around the band denied that. Edward himself had no access to any professional video footage of the band…he had a photographer videographer grab footage from TH-cam for Fender/EVH promotional videos because he had no access to any footage.
If any Largo footage exists, it was the property of the venue. There is no concrete evidence of any band/label financed and owned footage of any complete Van Halen show during the Roth era. The record company did not pay for any production costs of such footage and the cost was far too high for the band to pay for it themselves, so really the preponderance of evidence weighs heavily against the existence of any unreleased footage of the band, even well into the Hagar era.

Niagara Falls Convention Center, 12 miles from were I grew up. I was 8 years old when they played there. Ironically the first time I ever saw them live was in 86 with Hagar in that same building. Only held about 10-12 thousand people. A lot of monster truck and tractor pulls in that place. It is now own by the natives and currently a casino.

Its nice seeing the early footage again but in all honesty anyone who has been a Van Halen fan from way back has seen that same guitar a million times. I was born in August of '69 so I grew up listening to 70's & 80's music ... 80's being my favorite. I still have old magazines with promo pictures where Eddie used that guitar. There was also another white one with black stripes ... possibly the same one but it also had black circles on it. A few early pictures have Eddie with a Gibson Explorer too but obviously Kramer was his favorite until he found out qbout their overseas sweatshops & thats when Eddie dropped Kramer & hooked up with Ernie Ball, Eddie's favorite strings & made his own guitar which I believe was called The Ernie Ball Eddie Van Halen but it didn't last long because he tweeked the design a little more & changed the name to The Wolfgang but still cool to see the old clip & having flashbacks.

I saw them in Pittsburgh 6 days earlier, & he actually reversed it. Played the Les Paul for at least ATBL (possibly FYLT also) & Eruption, ending it by getting the growls simply turning the tuning keys into neverland. I was sitting on Mike's side, & stared at his Shark on the opposite side of the stage, but he never played it. For me, it was epic just to see it because magazine photos didn't do the colors justice.
It will take many lifetime's for another bank like the original Van Halen.

I saw the first tour when they opened for Sabbath. VH were amazing. But this 2nd tour was probably Van Halen’s best. They were headlining. Playing smaller venues, music halls instead of arenas like the first tour. So I bet not only was their playing in top form, but I assume the sound was amazing too. I should have seen the first four tours, but I saw the first and 1984, which wasn’t so good, (they were very drunk and disorganized).
It was a great time for them.

I find video from that era are rear but audio is super common. Tons of people used to record the audio for shows in the 70s.
Imagine being such an incredible opening act that you basically cause the long established headlining band to essentially break up. Unreal.

How certain is this NY in September, from the clothing it looks like this is one of the last shows they did on the 1978 show in December.
We did do quite a bit of research of this one and the film tin says "sept 8th" no year. I would always love to be proven wrong though. Researching all this rock history has been amazing. So if you do find any info or have any insight, please leave another comment bellow and we will look into it.

Too bad we didnt have good cell phones back then! Imagine being able to watch dozens and dozens of shows from 78-84 when they were at their peak. I'm old enough to have seen them 8 times during that run. Once in 79, once in 81, three times in 82 and three in 84. 1981 show was my favorite followed close by the 79 show. 1982 tour was good and the 84 tour was just alright. They werent getting along by then and Dave just cut up too much and didnt sing the songs right half the time. I just cant believe there arent any complete shows that were filmed during them years. The 81 Memphis show would be good , but I havent seen a high quality video of that show. The 82 Largo, Maryland show is pretty good. The US Festival is good, but Dave was drunk. A couple of South American shows and an 1984 show or two. That;s about it, right? There has to be more that some people are just holding on to. I mean, they were the hottest band on the planet during them years. Daves father was a doctor so I'm sure Dave could afford a video camera or two. He didnt have some shows filmed? This footage is great. Thanks for sharing. My first time seeing them was nine months after this show was filmed. June 1979 in Raleigh, NC.

Most cameras then were silent.
100% but a lot of people took audio recordings of concerts back then so we have been able to find audio for a lot of these reels and will eventually rerelease some of the videos with audio.
