- Van Halen live in Rome, Italy @ The Piper Club 21 May 1980. This video was performed for a TV show (“Superstar” Rai2 TV program) aired on 04 Sept 1980 during the sixth episode. They played also “You Really Got Me” for this lip-sync performances. Eddie Van Halen plays the dragon-snake guitar (very rare). In a subsequent video Dave jumps and hits his nose on a low-hanging mirror ball over the stage. A 3 foot ball of light was lowered over the stage on the darkened television studio. DLR, unaware of this, made one of his famous leaps, crashing into the light fixture resulting in his nose being broken in two places multiple contusion and a possible concussion. This had them cancel the next 2 shows until 5 days later on 5/26 at Pinkpop where Dave’s nose is taped up. In memory of Edward Van Halen, one year without you (10.06.20 - 10.06.21) we miss you. This is how I remember them.... Loud, proud, and 'tude for decades. These boys were the big bad wolves of rock... No quarter asked for, nor given. Dave was the complete shit... all over the stage, live and in your face. Ed ain't sober in this video...and you can tell. He's having fun though, by the look on his face. Look at the way Dave moves on stage. You know the dude had to stretch out for an hour or so, before walking on stage, to be able to be that fluid. In those days, when you purchased a Van Halen ticket... you saw a SHOW. You could not leave that auditorium or amphitheater and say with any truth at all, that you had not been entertained. Four men...one loud sound, one larger than life entertainment experience.
They were the mighty Van Halen.... and they were un-fucking-forgettable. RIP Ed... your guitar was the soundtrack of millions of lives... and they all miss you.

They would've been just another Rock band with a phenomenal guitar player, his brother on drums and Mike with his harmonies. The majority of frontmen from that era tried to emulate Dave from his screams to his acrobatics, who tried to emulate sam NO ONE!! And to say Dave couldn't carry a tune even when young You must be young because theirs plenty of video from back in the day to the contrary! Dave himself said he's not a singer but an entertainer and that's what he did!!
"Fools" has been a favorite of mine ever since I heard it for the first time. Mind blowing pyro of guitar playing and drama....total dope song!!!

It's the best tune on "Women and Children First". On Deep Purple's "Fireball" (1971) the best song is "Fools" also strangely enough.
I'm glad that I grew up in this time era. I saw this tour in 1980 and the memory is permanently embedded into my hard drive
To be honest, it takes me back to when it came out. The friends and I lip syncing and air guitaring in the bedroom. The fact this video exists in pristine condition is golden.
I takes me back too the first time i heard them I will never forget it, I was when I was 14 at my friends house in his basement the vh 1 record it was my friends older sisters album I was floored when I heard it the frirst time and we played it over and over I was hooked ever since

There's a lot of great guitar players but the best-of-the-best are all about the feel. EVH had it always.

How awesome is this? Like going back to a time when the world was right and just and VH was in their mighty prime. Lip-syncing madness for the foreign audience. Eddie playing the Shark. Simply awesome.

Yup...whomever filmed this obviously synced up the studio recording with the footage. DLR never could perform the songs in their entirety like the studio recordings. Good footage though...would've liked to hear the original sound

The camera guys did this a lot during Eddie's best playing. Maybe it is true Eddie was guarding his techniques from others.
Van Halen was awesome probably the best live band ever they could really put on a show they were really dedicated to their art.
Did Roth sing one note in key in the 8 years he was in the band? Why do you think they never released a live album with DLR?
@@pulsarlights2825 Roth sang with the band 21 years early years Roth was awesome they could have later on not so much but Roth was bad ass in concert I know I've seen um .
@pulsarlights Wow, you really are the paladin of perfect pitch and boring pro live music performances, it seems... If I want to enjoy Roth in tune then I listen to all VH glorious vinyls. Concerts were to enjoy Diamond Dave's acrobatics and random greatness, and to enjoy the raw power of the music trio. You might miss the concept of Rock n Roll, if you look for perfection. Go on stage to lip sync a tune and make it as entertaining as VH did here (thanks to Eddie's faces and David's moves). I bet you won't achieve same quality.

I saw Van Halen in what I'd call a big nightclub in 1979, they came out and played all the songs on their first album, and left. No encore, no nothing. It was all over in less than an hour. I've never forgiven them.
They may have run out of material lol. But they were transcendent live. The Shit, for real. Nothing like it--then or now.

I saw them 4 times from Women and Children First in 80, to ,1984, and the Fair Warning Tour was my favorite of them as well..

I've never seen this. And I've seen it all. This is a gem.
You can sense they had a "Take No Prisoners" approach which propelled them from small clubs to stadiums! And you can say what you want about Diamond Dave but he totally revolutionized the idea of what a frontman was and could do!
As much as I love VH and Diamond Dave you can’t really say he revolutionized what a front man should be because he totally ripped off Jim Dandy’s look and stage presence. Check out some of Black Oak Arkansas live performances. You’ll see what I’m talking about.
@@matthewbailey6017 People have said that for awhile. And I might agree. Both DLR and JD couldn't sing for shit! Yet both had a swagger and a braggadocio that uplifted that genre. The thing is the rock gymnastics during the late 70's and 80 were they more informed by JD or DLR? I'm opting for the latter!

Amazing footage of Eddie playing the "DragonSnake" guitar, one of his lesser-known axes, is extremely rare to catch on video. Even Van Halen's lip-sync performances are high energy and fun to watch. This vintage, hard-to-find video should be safeguarded.
I love metal and there are many great metal bands without question. But in my opinion, the DLR era Van Halen is the best of all time - DLR, EVH, AVH and MA have no rival.
